    I've watched a number of your videos , and wanted to say the close ups.. help a lot.. Thanks for showering the close up because it helps me understand better what you are trying to illustrate.. A close picture is better than a thousand words..😊

    Spending most of today bowl turning, I experienced most of the issues 😞. Very frustrating, but you took the time to explain how this happens and how to address.
    Will tackle them tomorrow.
    Thanks, Kent. Top notch production!

    Hmmm. Thanks for the wave/ripple explanation. I've gotten those on occasion and couldn't figure out why it happened. If one could make those really evenly from foot to lip, it might be a cool embellishment! 😉

    Great reminders. Your tips and techniques have helped me greatly. One additional cause of tool marks that you have mentioned numerous times before: dull tools! Each of the tool marks you have outlined here is exacerbated by a dull gouge. Sharpen frequently, especially with very dry hard woods. Thanks much.

    Thank you for saving my sanity! I learn more every time I watch your videos! My problem is that even with holding the gouge at a 45 when starting the edge, I still get kick back, and ruin the bowl edge. I can't figure out why that happens, but I created a work around by using a round nose scraper and light pressure. But I need to figure it out, so I can be competent with that part of bowl making. I'll keep watching and learning. Thanks for all you do! 😊 ❤

    Kent, when you demonstrated the inside and the necessity to shorten the, what was the angle of your bevel and size of the tool.? angle of the bevel

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nelson, the bevel of the tool stays the same. The heel is simply removed by grinding away the bottom area. The cutting bevel becomes a narrower path as the heel is ground back. The heel grinding is a random angle, but the bevel angle is set by the jig and stays consistent. I hope that answers your question. Happy Turning!

    Great video Kent. Lots of great tips that you shared here. I have known about several of them but haven’t performed or practiced some of them very well. I always find myself learning something new from your videos. You have such a great channel and you offer such wonderful advice.
    On another note what grind do you use on your bowl gouges?

    Kent, I know this is off topic but I need to know bout the Oneway jig a lot of people are using as you also have some excellent topics concerning this topic. But on the jig that holds the gouge, when setting the leg(arm) , when looking at it head on, do you use the left side or right side of the arm to choose the correct notch. The pictures can be a little confusing. Thanks

    I'm guilty of all of those Kent! Good info to correct these. Question on reducing the heal size, will the gouge then become specific to just use on the inside of smaller bowls or doesn't that have an effect of the gouge being used normally? As always, great video! Thanks...

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! No, you just have a smaller bevel area contacting the wood. And as you sharpen regularly, the bevel will return to the full height, if you don't also continue to reduce the heel. Happy Turning!

    Kent, kind of a long question/ comment. I’ve been watching you and others for months and now have the urge to buy equipment and start to turn wood myself (I’ve always been thought of as a pretty good craftsman). I just sold my Shopsmith due to now realizing the shortfall of the motor in the Shopsmith. Runs too fast for turning and not enough torque. I have my eye on a Harvey T-40 (you should read reviews if you’re not familar. I like the motor and the size as I don’t plan to use for anything beyond the size of a large bowl. Where I could use advise is in selecting support equipment / etc. for instance, do I need band saw. Your thoughts on starting chisels / protective mask / finishing material such as shellac, sanding sealer, glues, ect. Do I need dust control / chucks, sizes? / any other info you think important. I have a philosophy in not giving up on a lifestyle just because one might be getting older / I’m quite active, still play golf and can score pretty well. I don’t want make my age an issue in this new quest. Just watching you shape a bowl gouge without oil, yet you use oil when sharpening? Thanks Kent. Regards Dick Hampton from Denver No Carolina

    What if you've roughed a bowl out to dry then do second turn but want a thin wall but no mass left in center

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. You'll want to make the wall thickness of the first turning about 10% of the bowl diameter. This will still leave a weighted mass of material as you proceed down into the bowl.
