I'm half Thai and British and i do have Very pale skin and im very skinny and i fit more of the Thai beauty standards than British. For me I've had the opposite experience. I've felt loved and felt beautiful in Thailand but in the uk I've feel rlly ugly because i don't have a fit body and tanned skin! Also u guys are STUNNING!💖

Okay คุณวี, let’s talk about colorism in Thailand. Kind of ironic & sad how obsessed Thai people are about being light-skinned when the real Thai ethnicity is supposed to look dark-skinned. And it’s a loop, you know ? If you look at a business which is influential to beauty standard - - you look at showbiz, right ? People in showbiz who were spotted & persuaded by agencies to enter this professional line such as fashion models, actors, singers etc. They were chosen, of course, by their looks & also by their skin color. Those who are mixed-race especially half white are advantageous. You have lived in this country long enough to notice there is a TV station which more than 50 % of their female protagonists are half white !!
Don’t you think it’s funny when these female leads play their characters who were born to Thai parents but they look westerners ? Sometimes even in Thai historical dramas, these half white women pass the castings & receive the roles. So they have these mixed race actresses to represent beauty standard. No wonder why Thai women consume whitening products in hope of having lighter skin tone.
If there is some space in showbiz still left for another ethnicities, that space belongs to girls from Far-East Asia descendance. There were times a Chinese descendant like myself was unfortunately discriminated while I was growing up. Luckily thing changed after entertainments from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan became booming in Thailand the last decade. It seems Far-East Asian looks are included ito beauty standard too. Back to what I said, if not western looks … women with light skin tone like Chinese have their own places in Thai showbiz too.
Therefore it becomes a loop that continues, viewers look at this type of beauty & adore. Obsession with being pale among the ethnicity which is supposed to have dark skin tone exists & goes on.

Thank you for the insightful response, it is interesting how similar the problem you describe is to the one I see within the black community, i.e. mixed people taking the space of non-mixed people and then by doing so creating beauty standards and as you say....the loop continues.
I think it is a hard thing to balance because on the one hand mixed-race people need proper representation, but it shouldn't come at the cost of causing non-mixed people to feel like they are less than in any way. Hopefully things change as more people speak about beauty standards that are impacting them.
I hope you are keeping well!
