I believe that they do a fantastic Sunday lunch, as a retired London chauffeur I spent many an evening outside Rules, they always brought coffee out to the chauffeur which was complimentary
When I went there they encouraged us to walk up all 3 floors to look round and the private dining rooms up the little narrow staircase we're a sight indeed
If you ordered Stilton, they used to bring you the whole truckle and a spoon, Send it back when you had had sufficient. That was 40 years ago, I'm guessing they don't do that anymore
What a wonderful traditional British vibe and I think we should be celebrating our own food more than we do. When well cooked with good ingredients, it can not only hold its own with many other cuisines, but actually surpasses them. Eating that 'shroom' was well above the call of duty Gary. A true food reviewer to give it a go! I think it's the sort of establishment where I'd really enjoy having wine with my meal too. Now I always thought tapenade was generally made with black olives, so the tomato was a new one on me and I'm not sure I completely loved the look of it on the broccoli, but the taste can be something different I know. I really loved the look of those dauphinoise potatoes though. Overall, it all looked super-yummy. How lovely to see the desserts called 'puddings'. That took me back! And that garden area would have made me give a score of 10 on its own. But I'll agree with you on the overall score. The prices are amazing considering it's Covent Garden! Oh yes, I shall definitely desert my beloved favourites next time I visit, in favour of trying Rules! A lovely and interesting meal and review Gary.
My Mother and grand-parents used to cook lunch to those standards. No tapenade though on the brocolli: just lashings of butter. The gravy does the lubrication necessary.
I was recommended to go to Rules many years ago by a friend that worked in London who sadly isn’t with us anymore. After the first visit we have been back many times it is very special and worth saving up for if you are going to a show or just shopping, even an anniversary. It is said to have been a favourite with Edward VII.

Old school still works, as they say, ‘if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it’ There was definitely some ‘steamage’ on the camera, not seen that before, maybe it was all pretty hot, which you can’t complain about ! Great vlog Gary, thank you
Definitely upwards Gary, I was fortunate enough to dine at M’s table at Rules for my 50th birthday as a James Bond fan I was in heaven…I’m pleased you enjoyed it as much as I did. Fantastic channel Gary …I look forward to the next instalment
An expenses favorite of mine from back in the day (2000's). At that time good source of hearty if a little stodgy (but good quality) mostly British somewhat traditional fayre. They were a little up themselves then, but seem to have calmed down a bit now. You are right about the wine list - I have been fortunate enough to travel it extensively!
Hi Gary. I used to work under a chef who trained at The Garrick Club in the 70's in/near Covent Garden, a similar establishment to this one. He said it was like a museum and you could feel the history as soon as you walked in. The front was originally white, apparently, but became black due to the air pollution in London. Some of his tales of what went on in The Garrick Club kitchen (bear in mind it was the late 60's) were enough to make your stomach turn inside-out - I'll leave it there! Great post as always 👍.
What a place! As a young fellow in the 00's I worked at some incredible and hidden secret venues all over London through an agency. Some amazing cloisters of history all over that city
I checked in yesterday and believe I saw the 70 come up - but today? Count's slipped back somehow. 100 by June 30......Certainly an elegant looking joint.
That was exceptional Gary. As a special treat, it all deserved the perfect 10/10. The steak & kidney pie, potatoes and broccoli; substantial portions as with the gravy. The apple & rhubarb crumble and vanilla custard, wow. What a fabulous restaurant. Many thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us. Really appreciated 👍💎👍💎👍
Money can't buy a great restaurant experience, I visited Rules 30 years ago when I lived in London, it was expensive then but wow it was fantastic, I can still remember the occasion. Great to see that the standards haven't dropped. The same with Simpsons on the Strand, another quintesentially English restaurant and another fantastic meal.
A ubiquitous taste experience in Rules. The ambiance, service and traditional British foods is a must visit place. We tend to go more in the winter months when it’s dark, cold, wet and frosty outside. My wife now makes that pistachio cake at home for special occasions. 😎
Hi Gary, I don’t think that was too expensive for a restaurant with that sort of heritage. This is where tourists should visit if they want a real taste of old England.
What a great all-around experience. It was British cooking at its best! The gravy looked how real gravy should look and it did match with the steak and kidney pie as it should. When you did cut into the pie, it looked choc-a-block with beef etc. Very appetising. Everything was piping hot. I like that. The generous servings of vegetables were superb. That alone deserves top marks already. Real custard was served in generous quantity as well with your delicious apple and rhubarb crumble. It is a truly wonderful place for a special occasion. Very impressive! Thank you so much for taking us along. 10 put of 10.
For that money, one step further. A hot plate for the potatoes, broccoli, and gravy to sit on. There is nothing worse than towards the end of eating, cold foid. That said, yes, 10 out of 10. Thanks for taking us along. Aporeciated.
Thanks for another great review Gary! My husband has now booked us a table at Rules for spring next year when we visit London. Really looking forward to it!
Last time I was at Rules it was for my Birthday treat. I had Steak and Kidney Pie with mashed potatoes. I had for dessert apple crumble as I hated rhubarb. Interesting fact about Rules. The private dining room is where Edward VII dined with Lily Langtry. You know what I mean. The service is so excellent that the doorman took off and put on my coat.
Rules is classy without pretension - superb English food as it is meant to be - thankfully no signs of nouvelle cuisine - food at its simplest what I think is almost 'nanny' food - and not expensive for the quality you are served in elegant surroundings. An absolute treat! - forget all your so called designed chef restaurants this is the real mccoy!
oysters and potted shrimps the most expensive stuff on the menu, when traditionally oysters were added to steak and kidney pudding as filler, and the brown shrimp was cheap too since anyone can go down the beach with a push net and catch them.
I first visited Rules around 40 years ago in the autumn. Game was in season and the menu was a scintillating choice between grouse, pheasant, partridge, venison and other game. The interior was very traditional with cartoons by famous artists in the 19th C who had exchanged them for their meal. Smart dress only, the waiters wore colour coded jackets and the place was cluttered with every sort utensil and equipment needed in the restaurant. Twenty years later things (and the proprietor) had changed, much of the artwork and paraphernalia swept away with simpler service. Alas the visit was in the summer, so no game (as when you visited, only farmed venison - some now though) and I was somewhat disappointed, however your visit showed that now much of the former ambience, excellent service and cheffing had been recovered and the prices actually fairly reasonable especially for London. Here's to their next 200 years...
i'm sorry gary but your face when you bit into that mushroom...i cracked up pretty hard lol!😂 but hey, at least you tried them, i wouldn't do that if it was pak choi or swiss chard!😉 food looked delicious and finally a fancy restaurant with good portions, great video as always!👍
I have been to Rules 2 or 3 times a year for the last 20 years. It is always brilliant. The pies are the best in London - better than the London Pie Room at the Rosewood in Holborn and cheaper as well. Next time try the Chicken and Leek - i guarantee you wont have tasted better. On the price: for the taste/service/location I think its very good value for money (I know i risk setting the internet on fire here....). Ask the staff about the history of the upstairs cocktail bar - it was the private dining room used by Edward VII and Lilly Langtry. The ironically named "tradesman's entrance" door to the right of the main door on Maiden lane took them directly upstairs without being seen by diners. The wine and coctails there are steep but its the best balanced Bloody Mary you wll find in London. Great review Gary and well done on approaching 70 subs.
Rules as you said Gary is stunning inside ! Love the history on the walls and of this wonderful restaurant - centuries of quality. That pie was to die for as they say, superb & the sides were of ample portions. Apple & rhubarb crumble - one of my fav desserts alongside sticky toffee pudding. We don't see much rhubarb here & I miss it. 10/10 all day long from me Gary.
Based on the quality, location in central London, the surroundings in the restaurant and service etc, I personally don’t think £50 is a lot for what you got. As always, it comes down to perceived value, and looks like it adds up here for me. Gotta try this place.
If you fancy a drive out to one of the few remaining traditional country pubs left in rural north Essex for something different try The George Inn Shalford CM7 5HH. The landlord smokes all his own meat at the pub. Brisket Huffer and Chips and his own made BBQ sauce. Also serves Breakfast at the weekends. It will also be kind on your wallet.
Great food the price was fair. Quality is worth paying for. Around £50 it's a steal. It's all relatively cheap depending on how deep your pockets are. In London for a excellent meal it's a bargain 😋. I have never been but I will be over soon and will go to check it out. I will leave another comment on this video with my comments. For what there worth. Enjoy your content and videos. your not the only one who hates mushrooms. it's the texture and taste that gets me there so earthy! i know i'm watching a 6 month video, but i'm making my way through your review so far great food review videos
This brought back fond memories of the lunch I had in Rules with my business partner/Finance Director with our Company auditor, where I thoroughly enjoyed my first tasting of wild boar as the main course of three. The ambience in this place, with its history, is something else and the wonderful food, washed down with a couple of bottles of wine was even more pleasurable when our auditor picked up the tab, when I, in true Scottish fashion had to retreat to the toilet, when the bill was presented. 🤣🤣 Thank you for the memory, "Gary Eats" .
What a magnificent restaurant. The inside, seating and all those historic pictures are awesome. An excellent menu! The steak & Kidney pie looked very good. Never seen one with mushrooms though! Must say I didn't like the deep plate. The accessories were perfect. The star of the show was the dessert. I loved it! The prices are far too expensive. Paying £23.95 just for one pie!! However, I think this is an experience that shouldn't be missed. I'd give it a 10 and good luck to them. A great review Gary as usual, thanks very much indeed.
What a treasure! This is my favorite restaurant yet. Great review, Gary. Your choices were spot on to showcase the traditional menu. Really enjoyed the relaxing, unique garden at the end. The experience seemed to be fulfilling in many ways, ending in contentment. A true London experience.
As a newbie to your channel, it’s good to see and hear honest reviews about restaurants/cafes that we, the hoi polloi can frequent and actually afford (apart from your forays into Michelin Stars) I did eat once at Rules (about 2005) I remember I had Steak & Kidney that came with Oysters - followed by Stilton and Port, it was one of those meals that stuck in my mind even though it was twenty years ago. I could not fault both the quality and service!

Proper English Grub. You chose a perfect menu. Wonderful place, wonderful food. Thanks Gary. BTW, I love all you walks and Historic House videos. 🥂🍾
This is my favourite restaurant on the channel Gloria
Oh wow, just cutting in to that pie! Drool!
It was outrageous Terrance
Old school still works, as they say, ‘if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it’ There was definitely some ‘steamage’ on the camera, not seen that before, maybe it was all pretty hot, which you can’t complain about ! Great vlog Gary, thank you
Thanks Karen. Yes, I noticed that as well. Apologies and thank you
@@GaryEats absolutely no need to apologise. Just not seen it before as
Mr Cameraman is always spot on. What a fabulous restaurant
Definitely upwards Gary, I was fortunate enough to dine at M’s table at Rules for my 50th birthday as a James Bond fan I was in heaven…I’m pleased you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Fantastic channel Gary …I look forward to the next instalment
Very kind Barry and that was a great treat wow 🤩
An expenses favorite of mine from back in the day (2000's). At that time good source of hearty if a little stodgy (but good quality) mostly British somewhat traditional fayre. They were a little up themselves then, but seem to have calmed down a bit now. You are right about the wine list - I have been fortunate enough to travel it extensively!
Lucky you I wish I had one lol
Rules is a big wow from me Gary, without a doubt 10/10 😂
This is my favourite restaurant, Ken
Oh I so enjoyed this review! The best part was watching you enjoy every facet of your meal (as one should), and the ambiance of coarse! Splendid
Thank you Sandria as always x
Pub grub on a different level looks amazing ...tapenade on the broccoli and a pie withaged steak im drooling
This was my favourite restaurant, Paul
Thank you so much
What a place! As a young fellow in the 00's I worked at some incredible and hidden secret venues all over London through an agency. Some amazing cloisters of history all over that city
You must have some brilliant story’s to tell 😳
From 69K subscribers on the previous video to 69.5K on this. 70K by the end of the week and 100K by the end of the month.
Fingers crossed! Thank you but I think it will be a long while before 100k
@@GaryEats We will see.
Finger slipped.
I make a mean dauphinois btw.
Personally didn't think it was that expensive as potatoes and veg was enough for 2.
I checked in yesterday and believe I saw the 70 come up - but today? Count's slipped back somehow. 100 by June 30......Certainly an elegant looking joint.
69.51..I subscribed,top man gary ❤from wales
Hi Gary,
That meal look like it was worth every penny. Thanks! Very Educational and entertaining.
This was my very favourite restaurant full of history
Been in Rules lots of times and love the history the ambience and the food….. a night to remember every time.
I agree with you completely Lee, a truly wonderful restaurant
That was exceptional Gary. As a special treat, it all deserved the perfect 10/10. The steak & kidney pie, potatoes and broccoli; substantial portions as with the gravy. The apple & rhubarb crumble and vanilla custard, wow. What a fabulous restaurant. Many thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with us. Really appreciated 👍💎👍💎👍
I really appreciate you watching and commenting every time have a wonderful weekend 👌
@@GaryEats Bless you Gary. You bring joy and happiness, when times are tough. Thank you again 👍👍👍
Yeh portions 🤦♂️
Bit to much money
Money can't buy a great restaurant experience, I visited Rules 30 years ago when I lived in London, it was expensive then but wow it was fantastic, I can still remember the occasion. Great to see that the standards haven't dropped. The same with Simpsons on the Strand, another quintesentially English restaurant and another fantastic meal.
Couldn't agree more Maurice. A truly unique restaurant
A ubiquitous taste experience in Rules. The ambiance, service and traditional British foods is a must visit place. We tend to go more in the winter months when it’s dark, cold, wet and frosty outside. My wife now makes that pistachio cake at home for special occasions. 😎
It's a wonderful experience. I can imagine how beautiful it is when it's snowing outside
Defo one to try. Finding this channel has reminded me why I decided to move to London in the first place!
This is one I highly recommend and thank you
Steak & Kidney is my favourite pie filling, makes brilliant gravy too. That pie looked truly outstanding, thanks for the review Gary 👍
Very kind Jason thank you
Ive eaten in Rules loved it such ambience and history
Beuatiful restaurant, truly incredible experience
Hi Gary, I don’t think that was too expensive for a restaurant with that sort of heritage. This is where tourists should visit if they want a real taste of old England.
Very fair comment John and I agree
What a great all-around experience. It was British cooking at its best! The gravy looked how real gravy should look and it did match with the steak and kidney pie as it should. When you did cut into the pie, it looked choc-a-block with beef etc. Very appetising. Everything was piping hot. I like that. The generous servings of vegetables were superb. That alone deserves top marks already. Real custard was served in generous quantity as well with your delicious apple and rhubarb crumble. It is a truly wonderful place for a special occasion. Very impressive! Thank you so much for taking us along. 10 put of 10.
That you for the perfect comment Sylvia nothing to add apart from have a wonderful weekend
absolutely my favourite restaurant..great English food a step back in time once or twice a year its worth pushing the boat out
It’s my favourite restaurant as well Gerald
Lovely looking restaurant - redolent of London history. The food also looks delicious 😊
Petition for Gary to be next James Bond
👍even on eating a mushroom, that is some bravery from our Gary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very funny
Would the cameraman be the villain?
Too young surely?
For that money, one step further. A hot plate for the potatoes, broccoli, and gravy to sit on. There is nothing worse than towards the end of eating, cold foid. That said, yes, 10 out of 10. Thanks for taking us along. Aporeciated.
Well said Jeff!
I took my dad there for his 85th birthday. We had a splendid meal and they brought out a cake with candles. It was posh but really classy.
That’s so great to hear Donald 👌
I have fallen so hard down the well that is this channel. Gary you are a delightful and insightful host and it is so very pleasant to watch and learn.
Robert that is really appreciated and very kind
Thanks for another great review Gary! My husband has now booked us a table at Rules for spring next year when we visit London. Really looking forward to it!
I promise you won’t be disappointed my favourite restaurant on the channel
LOOKS AMAZING GARY ANOTHER PLACE ON MY LIST TO VISIT
It’s really worth a visit Kevin
Last time I was at Rules it was for my Birthday treat. I had Steak and Kidney Pie with mashed potatoes. I had for dessert apple crumble as I hated rhubarb. Interesting fact about Rules. The private dining room is where Edward VII dined with Lily Langtry. You know what I mean. The service is so excellent that the doorman took off and put on my coat.
Yes indeed. We didn't take videos of that room as people were sitting sadly. Glad you enjoy your visit and we didn't have a doorman sadly!!
Spot on. It's excellent
oysters and potted shrimps the most expensive stuff on the menu, when traditionally oysters were added to steak and kidney pudding as filler, and the brown shrimp was cheap too since anyone can go down the beach with a push net and catch them.
That is good point, but as you know, oysters are very very expensive now
I first visited Rules around 40 years ago in the autumn.
It’s a beautiful and wonderful restaurant Mark
Shaken BUT never Stirred Gary AKA our Mr Bond. Please show us more of these glamourous places. I was looking up Kingsman earlier
😂 😂 yes ! 💯
Imagine our friend Gary as James Bond. Hehe.
Lol brilliant
@@GaryEats Your word is your Bond Sir - everything delivered to perfection
i'm sorry gary but your face when you bit into that mushroom...i cracked up pretty hard lol!😂 but hey, at least you tried them, i wouldn't do that if it was pak choi or swiss chard!😉
food looked delicious and finally a fancy restaurant with good portions, great video as always!👍
Celery no no no no🤔🤣
Lol! I got there in the end, a promise is a promise
Thank you Rob the restaurant is steeped in history
Rules as you said Gary is stunning inside ! Love the history on the walls and of this wonderful restaurant - centuries of quality. That pie was to die for as they say, superb & the sides were of ample portions. Apple & rhubarb crumble - one of my fav desserts alongside sticky toffee pudding. We don't see much rhubarb here & I miss it. 10/10 all day long from me Gary.
Robert this was one special restaurant and I enjoyed myself so much as you can see
So happy to see trad cuisine done oh so well. It looks, & I'm sure it tasted amazing! Nice one Gary!
This was absolutely fantastic, Eddie
@GaryEats Will definitely visit when I get to London, any reccomdations for Glasgow or Edinburgh? Am there next week.
Based on the quality, location in central London, the surroundings in the restaurant and service etc, I personally don’t think £50 is a lot for what you got. As always, it comes down to perceived value, and looks like it adds up here for me. Gotta try this place.
Matthew you’ll remember this restaurant forever
Yeh I agree matthew potter
Considering most people are suffering through a cost of living crisis, this video is really an indulgence of the senses.
This is a food review channel Anna, I bring all different types of content and different price points for people to enjoy
I think he has already reviewed Burger King......
Only 1790s kids remember this place
Lol
If you fancy a drive out to one of the few remaining traditional country pubs left in rural north Essex for something different try The George Inn Shalford CM7 5HH. The landlord smokes all his own meat at the pub. Brisket Huffer and Chips and his own made BBQ sauce. Also serves Breakfast at the weekends. It will also be kind on your wallet.
Thank you for the recommendation
Thanks Gary.
Love your reviews will go to Rules on our next visit to London.
This is one restaurant I highly recommend, especially for the history Jeff
Great food the price was fair. Quality is worth paying for. Around £50 it's a steal.
It's all relatively cheap depending on how deep your pockets are.
In London for a excellent meal it's a bargain 😋.
I have never been but I will be over soon and will go to check it out.
I will leave another comment on this video with my comments. For what there worth. Enjoy your content and videos. Great viewing 👌 👍
Please do Zawar, it's a brilliant place to eat very unique. Thank you and looking forward to reading your other comment
@GaryEats by the way your videos are a cut above your opposition videos. Your made for reviewing restaurants and doing food videos.
The TV 📺 companies are missing out by not employing you. It's only my opinion but I'm sure there are thousands who would watch your shows on tv. keep up the good work 👏
That’s incredibly kind. Hopefully I get the call up one day 🤣 in all seriousness, thank you
I loved watching this. It made me happy, and hungry.
I absolutely loved this restaurant
Another incredible review. The history and delicious pie, mash and gravy. Wow I just want to visit that place. Thanks for a great video
It’s really worth a visit 💯
very interesting restaurant ....I'll certainly be going there when I next come back to England.. Somewhere to take special fiends who would appreciate the history and atmosphere. Thanks Gary
Fantastic to hear cheers Alan
Proper old school food and service looked really good.....im watching this at midnight craving the crumble and custard! Great review again Gary keep up the good work !
Thank you Graham and wow what a pudding
your not the only one who hates mushrooms. it's the texture and taste that gets me there so earthy! i know i'm watching a 6 month video, but i'm making my way through your review so far great food review videos
Unfortunately, I just do not like mushrooms and I have tried them so many times
This brought back fond memories of the lunch I had in Rules with my business partner/Finance Director with our Company auditor, where I thoroughly enjoyed my first tasting of wild boar as the main course of three. The ambience in this place, with its history, is something else and the wonderful food, washed down with a couple of bottles of wine was even more pleasurable when our auditor picked up the tab, when I, in true Scottish fashion had to retreat to the toilet, when the bill was presented. 🤣🤣 Thank you for the memory, "Gary Eats" .
I’m really pleased it brought back some excellent memories Jim
What a magnificent restaurant. The inside, seating and all those historic pictures are awesome.
An excellent menu! The steak & Kidney pie looked very good. Never seen one with mushrooms though! Must say I didn't like the deep plate. The accessories were perfect. The star of the show was the dessert. I loved it! The prices are far too expensive. Paying £23.95 just for one pie!! However, I think this is an experience that shouldn't be missed. I'd give it a 10 and good luck to them. A great review Gary as usual, thanks very much indeed.
I have to agree with you, Mohammad, this was one exceptional restaurant full of history and one I highly recommend a visit to
Exquisite, Gary. The location and food looks top notch. My concern, your continuing hatred of mushrooms - there are therapists available to help you!
LOL. I did laugh
Looked absolutely amazing, my mouth was watering just watching you eat that crumble and custard!!! Superb.
This is one restaurant I’d highly recommend Matt
Food looks delicious. Well made, proper English food with full of flavour quality ingredients!!
I agree completely Caroline
What a treasure! This is my favorite restaurant yet. Great review, Gary. Your choices were spot on to showcase the traditional menu. Really enjoyed the relaxing, unique garden at the end. The experience seemed to be fulfilling in many ways, ending in contentment. A true London experience.
Loved it Kathleen my favourite so far as well just full of history with brilliant food 👌
It’s great to see these great establishments still thriving. Maybe one day I will get a chance to visit!
It’s really worth a visit
Looks absolute heaven WOW!!!!!
Absolutely fantastic
As a newbie to your channel, it’s good to see and hear honest reviews about restaurants/cafes that we, the hoi polloi can frequent and actually afford (apart from your forays into Michelin Stars) I did eat once at Rules (about 2005) I remember I had Steak & Kidney that came with Oysters - followed by Stilton and Port, it was one of those meals that stuck in my mind even though it was twenty years ago. I could not fault both the quality and service!
Thanks John
Gradually making my way through your videos Gary, one of my favourites this one. Definitely taking the other half to this one after your review. Special treat me thinks for an impending birthday. Keep safe crossing those roads and if you are ever down in Kent, give the West House, Biddenden a go 😉!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
