Great video, Gary. The Shish may be the oldest Indian restaurant still in existence in Glasgow but the Koh-i-Noor, which closed down a few years ago, also opened in 1964, perhaps slightly before the Shish opened. These two restaurants used to be across the road from each other in Gibson Street, next to Glasgow University, and were great favourites with students. I frequented both in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Like Rangers and Celtic, both had their fans. I was a Koh-I-Noor man. After watching your video my wife and I have decided to head off from Stirling to Glasgow for a meal at the Shish. - For nostalgia's sake as well as for the food.
I worked in Berkeley St for 15 years (left 5 years ago), and the Koh-I-Noor was my go-to for all things curry. Best curry house in Glasgow IMO, and much missed. If you're wanting a really good curry in the town now, I'd head to either:- -Mother India -The Dakin -The Dhabba
Its great you are still in Scotland, this has not been a flying visit, I am so pleased that you have tried such a variety of different places and cuisines, Your reviews really make me happy. Thanks for the visit, please come back soon. Best wishes.
Gary, you went to the Indian right on my home patch! 😂 Welcome to the West End. I hope you went to The Doublet for a drink afterwards. I remember the original Taj Mahal in Gibson Street in the early 80s before this current one opened.
This is an old family favourite and a part of Glasgow legend. The Shish Mahal is one of the best Indian restaurants in the country. I recommend the lamb chops starter. Mr Ali sadly passed away a couple of years ago but his legacy lives on. Thank you so much for covering this restaurant Gary, so glad you enjoyed it.
Now here's the thing. One of the few complaints I have about a lot of Indian curries is that they are often swimming in sauce. Sometimes disguising a lack of the meat/solid produce. So for me, I would be even more impressed by that Tikka Masala for being quite dense.

I had no idea Chicken Tikka Masala originated in Glasgow. Not only is your channel great fun, it's educational! I love a CTM...will definitely give this place a go.
Most "Indian" dishes served by Indian Restaurants seem to have originated in the UK. I had never heard of a Balti dish until I started eating in Indian restaurants over here. In India a balti (bucket) is used to feed animals.
Gary. Thank you to both you and the camera-man for everything that you do. Keep up what you're doing and I hope that I can help you achieve more of your ambitions and dreams in the future!

I loved going to the Kama Sutra Indian in Sauchihall St, which had a real warm Indian ambience about it but was revamped to a soulless place and probably had the weirdest onion bhaji ever.
My parents would drive from the south side of Glasgow to go there in the early 70s which was quite a journey back then. My mum would bring some pots and pans for them to fill with curry, rice, paratha and pakora etc…. Then my dad would have to be very careful driving home in case it spilled. ❤️🏴❤️
Gary my mate in New York came over with the intention of going to the shish mahal as he wanted to experience the CTM but we’d to alter our plans so went to Mowgli street food on st Vincent street instead-wasn’t disappointed in the slightest what a great night out that was, you should try if if you’ve time, which I doubt!! Another good honest review!

Original Shish Mahal was on Gibson Street, at that time a mecca for curry houses, round the corner next to the University. So it was a student favourite on a Friday night when pubs closed at 10. But good to see you doing the history. Next time in Glasgow try Mother India in Glasgow. Consistently rated top Indian restaurant for years
I have been going to Shish Mahal since 1987 when I studied at Glasgow University- I still have the pleasure of going on occasion when I’m back in the West End. Big shout out to Asif and all at Shish Mahal. From Naseem … and my one of my oldest friends Sunil, who now lives in Australia.
(681) The Temple of Tikka Masala. I envy the fact that you live in Britain; so MANY different food cultures to explore with little traveling time involved. Indian food for the win once again. Thanks for the upload, Gary its a wonderful treat to have on our Thanksgiving Day.
I am going to be contrarian and comment that the Shish Mahal, while good in the past, is no longer the premier Indian restaurant in Glasgow. Normally when you visit any other Indian restaurant in Glasgow, the red sauce is spicy and the portion sizes (especially the starter of prawns you had) are bigger. One of my favourites is Madha in the Merchant City - although it's incredibly pricey, the quality is top-shelf. Another one I would've recommended is Nakodar in Dennistoun, it has an open tandoor and you can literally smell it as you enter the restaurant. I've tried such a variety of great Indians in Glasgow that the Shish would barely make my top 10. Very glad you enjoyed it but the place has let me down many times before. Also, you should've tried the spiced onions, as you don't get those in England. Still, very happy to see that you enjoyed it.
@@GaryEats Should have gone to Yadgar as I previously suggested. Far better than a main stream restaurant like The Shish. Peppers - just ballast . However Gary I fully realise that you cannot possibly follow everyone's recommendations. Bril channel.
Glad you enjoyed!! I knew the tikka masala was created here in Glasgow but I didn't know it was this restaurant. I'll defo give it a try. Great video. Scotland gets a lot of bad press for it's unhealthy deep fried diet but there's a lot of excellent food out there too. Glad to see you checking some of it out.
Very nice! Inspired to try some different things when I go for a curry this weekend. Gary, 200k is getting close! You're smashing it at the moment. Don't forget to take a break though 😊
Gary, the reason you are as successful as you are is because you are really good to watch. Your food reviews are bang on and honest. You go to places that everyone can go to and you are incredibly relatable and funny. I really enjoy your videos. Please keep doing them.
In 2001 British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook gave a speech in which he hailed chicken tikka masala as a symbol of modern multicultural Britain. He even offered his own simplified explanation of how the entrée evolved: “Chicken tikka is an Indian dish. The masala sauce was added to satisfy the desire of British people to have their meat served in gravy.” True story Gary .. 👌👌👌
Excellent review Gary. It's crazy to think the best Indian meal I ever had was in Scotland back in 2003 at a family owned restaurant just outside of Edinburgh. It was a Buffett style set up with multiple dish offerings including deserts. The Chicken tika masala was incredible.
There's something strangely satisfying about watching someone eating and enjoying fine food. Weird, as I tuck in to my beans on toast, but still very satisfying! I think I would have really enjoyed this Indian meal as well as enjoying Gary's company.
All those dishes looked amazing. Quite soon I will be tucking into my Sainsburys Chicken Jalfrezi, mini garlic and coriander naan and air fried McCains Home chips. I would swop with what you had in an instant. Great review as always.
It’s another animated & excitable Gary!! The food looked so good- you made me hungry again! Excellent value for money and quality food. Love your box of goodies to remember your road trip to Scotland. Bless you Gary… and thank YOU for all you have done for us- which is what you do best - just being your lovely self😘 Safe journey home boys xx🌈
Looked like a good Indian meal, and I do love Indian food. The pakora looked excellent and it was some portion. The Tikka masala sounded really interesting although I would have wanted more sauce as I mix sauce with the rice and still want some for the naan. I have eaten in many different countries and Indian is still my favourite. This was a really interesting review, and I am glad you did it. Thanks Gary.
Ooh. This is the first restaurant you've reviewed that I've actually been to. It's my absolute favourite place. The food is fantastic and the whole place is very relaxed. Thanks for this great review, as always... Gary!
Shish Mahal definitely one of my favourite indian restaurant in Glasgow! The old fashioned service and ambience is great. And the food isn't bad either...
@@johnwilliams5838 The dish has taken on large cultural significance in Britain. It is widely considered to be one of the country's national dishes. In 2001 British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook gave a speech in which he hailed chicken tikka masala as a symbol of modern multicultural Britain. No one is saying it wasn’t invented in Scotland, but the fact remains it’s a national dish of Great Britain
Wow Gary. That really did look delicious. Before you even said it I said to my daughter “there’s enough for two there”. That Nan was huge. You’ll be at 200,000 subs by Christmas 🎄. You really enjoyed the food. The CTM and especially the sauce looked much better than what is offered in the SoE, if I may say so. Thank you very much for showing us your Indian restaurant experience in Glasgow. I love Indian food.
Don't ever let your channel change Gary! I cant believe ( actually I can 😏) that you thanked your viewers for helping to make your journeys happen...🥰 The world needs more people like you imo. Wholesome, honest and humble 👍🏻👍🏻
Your love and excitement for food is unmatched Gary, I’m surprised you’re not 30st 😅 I assume your love comes from working in food/service industry before TH-cam and it’s commendable that it still lights your fire, a true passion that really shines through.
Hi Gary! Another fantastic review. You've had some excellent Indian cuisine throughout the channel & this is no exception. Everything looked well presented & very tasty. I also thought they were a little stingy on the number of prawns, but a very minor critique. It looks like you have had a ball in Scotland. Listening to a few of your comments in this review, you really are a very humble man & so genuinely appreciative of your audience. I hope you & your son have many brilliant food & travel adventures still to come & to share with us. Take care & as always, looking forward to your next review. 😊💙
Gary, it makes me proud that you took the time to visit Glasgow and Scotland .The home of tikka masala. The Shish Mahal is a Glasgow institution with a wonderful history. You and the cameraman journeys to Bonnie Scotland has been a pleasure to watch, I hope both of you enjoyed all the Scottish scran on offer ?
Another amazing review of a great Indian, that nan blanket was value for money and all the dishes were not skimpy. Looked very tasty but disappointed that Gary did not choke and go bright red 🥳
In case no one else has mentioned it, the name of this place translates to glass/mirror palace - which seems to tie in with the theme and look of the decor. You’ll soon be at 200k subscribers and very well deserved too; thanks for all you do on this channel Gary.
those prawns looked fire gary never seen them done like that before and i love a good tikka and that looks like a good one hope your well mate : ) and good review as always : )
You are so welcome for your chicken tikka Masala adventure. If anyone deserves it, it is you Gary and your son, through all that hard work. Yes, three prawns seem skimpy.
I just found this channel and I subbed after watching this video. More so to do with the way you carry yourself. Just seem like a nice upbeat guy. Just what we need at the minute when everything else seems miserable.
Awesome food Gary so glad you got to experience the original. Must say Gary you have had a great Scottish food tour bar one bad breakfast. Great video and great work from the Cameraman

So glad you loved it and we loved your Scotland series too. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us and thank you to your Son too. Have a lovely relaxed evening sweet x😊
This is very interesting about the creation of chicken tikka masala. Actually a lot of the Indian food we eat may be better described as Anglo-Indian. Dishes created for British tastes during the days of the Empire and later when the UK welcomed immigrants from our former colonies. I dislike terms like “traditional dishes “. Good food evolves over time reflecting different influences and available foodstuffs . After all Indian food could only use chillies once the New World was discovered.
Shish Mahal i remember as a child located on Gibson Street. My family would visit regularly and such a lovely family. We still have their original cookery book from the 70s, the one you see on Amazon doesn't compare. Thankyou once again for a fab vlog from a mum from Glasgow 🏴👌

Original Shish Mahal was on Gibson Street, at that time a mecca for curry houses, round the corner next to the University. So it was a student favourite on a Friday night when pubs closed at 10. But good to see you doing the history. Next time in Glasgow try Mother India in Glasgow. Consistently rated top Indian restaurant for years
Thanks Joe (I’m not sure that’s your name) lol
Just catching up with your Caledonia visits Gary. Most enjoyable as usual.
Thank you Derek 🏴
I have been going to Shish Mahal since 1987 when I studied at Glasgow University- I still have the pleasure of going on occasion when I’m back in the West End.
Big shout out to Asif and all at Shish Mahal.
From Naseem … and my one of my oldest friends Sunil, who now lives in Australia.
That is truly wonderful to hear thank you for letting me know
Really good seeing you up here in Scotland Gary, the videos are great, glad you are enjoying yourself
That’s very kind 🏴🏴
(681) The Temple of Tikka Masala. I envy the fact that you live in Britain; so MANY different food cultures to explore with little traveling time involved. Indian food for the win once again. Thanks for the upload, Gary its a wonderful treat to have on our Thanksgiving Day.
I hope you have a wonderful day today ❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸
Gary in a time of great hardship you keep me going. Thank you my friend.
Sam always keep going 👍🏼
Ah just a bit of inflation working its way through. In Sir Keir we trust 😂
I think the original mother India is right up there - had a curry from them earlier this year which was the best I've had in ages.
I agree. Not a patch of Akbars or the Curry shops in the south side..As you say no longer among the best Glasgow has to offer
I've heard Mother India is also very good
@@GaryEats Should have gone to Yadgar as I previously suggested. Far better than a main stream restaurant like The Shish. Peppers - just ballast . However Gary I fully realise that you cannot possibly follow everyone's recommendations. Bril channel.
The one in dennistoun is pony don’t rate it whatsoever if u want the best there only one option THE FAMOUS SHENAZ GRANVILLE ST ONE VISIT MEANS MANY
Perfect Gary! Savory culinary history from you,who else ?? Great
😀😀 thank you
Your welcome back anytime, absolutely love the fact that you enjoyed your time in Scotland and tried some real good food in the process 🎉
Thank you very much Kevin, very kind
Love your videos,,,thanks for spending time in Glasgow
That’s really appreciated William
Ive been going to the shish for 35+ years. Their chicken chaat is the best in Glasgow by a mile.
Great stuff, should have given it a go
Indian food is exceptional
I agree
Glad you enjoyed!! I knew the tikka masala was created here in Glasgow but I didn't know it was this restaurant. I'll defo give it a try. Great video.
Scotland gets a lot of bad press for it's unhealthy deep fried diet but there's a lot of excellent food out there too. Glad to see you checking some of it out.
Thank you very much and it’s definitely worth a visit Allan
Very nice! Inspired to try some different things when I go for a curry this weekend.
Gary, 200k is getting close! You're smashing it at the moment. Don't forget to take a break though 😊
Fingers crossed! Lets hope so, I've had a nice break recently
Gary Eats could be the new Ronay Guides ... real food, real people, real life.
Gary, the reason you are as successful as you are is because you are really good to watch. Your food reviews are bang on and honest. You go to places that everyone can go to and you are incredibly relatable and funny. I really enjoy your videos. Please keep doing them.
Thank you so very much Alex, take care
Well said Alex I totally agree
In 2001 British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook gave a speech in which he hailed chicken tikka masala as a symbol of modern multicultural Britain. He even offered his own simplified explanation of how the entrée evolved: “Chicken tikka is an Indian dish. The masala sauce was added to satisfy the desire of British people to have their meat served in gravy.”
True story Gary .. 👌👌👌
A likeable and honest man , great videos and reviews that we need !
That’s very kind, thank you
You're certainly giving us a good taste of Scotland with all these videos Gary.
Thank you both 🏴🥳
I’m so so sad. It’s all over now until next year Rosie. 🏴🏴
@ Haste ye back 🏴
So glad you visited here! So glad to see you in Glasgow!
I had a great time 🏴🏴
This looks awesome. Great gift given to you.
It was! Superb
Excellent review Gary. It's crazy to think the best Indian meal I ever had was in Scotland back in 2003 at a family owned restaurant just outside of Edinburgh. It was a Buffett style set up with multiple dish offerings including deserts. The Chicken tika masala was incredible.
Sounds incredible Winston 🏴
I did request this review.
Thank you Gary.
He did write a recipe book also, proceeds to 'The Princess Trust' from memory.
Hope you're well.
I will check it out Nigel and thank you my friend
What a fantastic gesture
@@747jono I thought exactly the same.
There's something strangely satisfying about watching someone eating and enjoying fine food. Weird, as I tuck in to my beans on toast, but still very satisfying! I think I would have really enjoyed this Indian meal as well as enjoying Gary's company.
That is a really kind and wonderful comment thank you
Great video Gary brought back special memories for me I had my first ever Indian Curry in this restaurant in 1970 ❤
Thank you so much Andrew and wow what memories!!
Looks wonderful. When your visit comes to an end Haste Ye Back sometime soon
That’s it unfortunately but definitely back next year
Top video Gary. Enjoyed the calmness :)
All those dishes looked amazing. Quite soon I will be tucking into my Sainsburys Chicken Jalfrezi, mini garlic and coriander naan and air fried McCains Home chips. I would swop with what you had in an instant. Great review as always.
I really hope you enjoy 👌👌
It’s another animated & excitable Gary!! The food looked so good- you made me hungry again!
Excellent value for money and quality food.
Love your box of goodies to remember your road trip to Scotland. Bless you Gary… and thank YOU for all you have done for us- which is what you do best - just being your lovely self😘
Safe journey home boys xx🌈
Thank you so much Carol xx 🌹❤️🌹
Looked like a good Indian meal, and I do love Indian food. The pakora looked excellent and it was some portion. The Tikka masala sounded really interesting although I would have wanted more sauce as I mix sauce with the rice and still want some for the naan. I have eaten in many different countries and Indian is still my favourite. This was a really interesting review, and I am glad you did it. Thanks Gary.
Thanks as always Mark, I understand some prefer more sauce
Fab review Gary .Glad you had a fab time in Scotland ,they sure have some FAB places to eat in .Both keep well.
Ooh. This is the first restaurant you've reviewed that I've actually been to. It's my absolute favourite place. The food is fantastic and the whole place is very relaxed. Thanks for this great review, as always... Gary!
That’s wonderful to hear Paul 🏴🏴
As they say in Glasgow.
'For we're no' awa' tae bide awa'
'We'll aye come back an' see ye'.
Shish Mahal definitely one of my favourite indian restaurant in Glasgow! The old fashioned service and ambience is great. And the food isn't bad either...
It’s a good restaurant Steve I must say
It’s funny when foreigners first learn about this being a national dish of Great Britain 😂😂
😂😂😂
Scotland not great britain
The reason is obvious. You’re so honest, likeable, knowledgeable and passionate about your food. You’re gonna hit that million I guarantee it. Well deserved lads. 👍
Thank you very much Philip, that means an awful lot my friend
You really enjoyed the food. The CTM and especially the sauce looked much better than what is offered in the SoE, if I may say so. Thank you very much for showing us your Indian restaurant experience in Glasgow. I love Indian food.
That’s really appreciated Sylvia thank you
Don't ever let your channel change Gary!
I cant believe ( actually I can 😏) that you thanked your viewers for helping to make your journeys happen...🥰
The world needs more people like you imo.
That’s very kind definitely yes 👍 Congratulations on the result last night 👍
That all looked amazing, another gem from Gary.
Thank you Alan
Brilliant, well done, great review
Thank you Kenny
I had an amazing time in Scotland Erin, wonderful food and fantastic people, I can’t wait to go back r t year, I hope you have a lovely weekend ❤️🌹❤️
I’ve really enjoyed it Joseph 🏴🏴
I thought you were going to levitate when your tried the masala, great work as always Gary, thanks!
It did taste fantastic John
I think.... thank YOU ( and the cameraman) for bringing so much joy. Almost 200k sub 😃 well done! 👍😃
🎉 thank you Mattias
Camera person!
Another amazing review of a great Indian, that nan blanket was value for money and all the dishes were not skimpy. Looked very tasty but disappointed that Gary did not choke and go bright red 🥳
I nearly caught you out lol 😂
@ 🥳👍
Nans in Scotland used to be called Elephants Ears because of the size
I understand completely
In case no one else has mentioned it, the name of this place translates to glass/mirror palace - which seems to tie in with the theme and look of the decor.
You’ll soon be at 200k subscribers and very well deserved too; thanks for all you do on this channel Gary.
Thank you so much for the information and that is very kind
those prawns looked fire gary never seen them done like that before and i love a good tikka and that looks like a good one hope your well mate : ) and good review as always : )

You are so welcome for your chicken tikka Masala adventure. If anyone deserves it, it is you Gary and your son, through all that hard work.
Yes, three prawns seem skimpy.
Thank you so much Patrick 👍🏼👍🏼
The naan looks like a duvet... gorgeous food.
👍🏼👍🏼😅
We are part of your adventure. Thank you for taking us for the ride!
Thanks for watching!
And what a delicious adventure it is ! Next year the Mediterranean 😊
Thanks Gary
Thank you so much Angela, that's very kind of you to do!
Hi Gary, my girlfriend says you are so wholesome, she is totally real and sitting next to me, I haven't even watched this yet.

Why can’t I meet a nice bloke like Gary?! Enthusiastic, chatty, kind and brilliant company
That’s so kind to say, thank you very much ❤️
I just found this channel and I subbed after watching this video. More so to do with the way you carry yourself. Just seem like a nice upbeat guy. Just what we need at the minute when everything else seems miserable.
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you to say! Hope you have a smashing weekend
Awesome food Gary so glad you got to experience the original. Must say Gary you have had a great Scottish food tour bar one bad breakfast. Great video and great work from the Cameraman
This was something different Michael, I was expected your bog standard masala
I love your enthusiasm Our Gary.
Everything looked delicious and delightful.
I cant remember green peppers in a masala. But it looked beautiful.
So glad you loved it and we loved your Scotland series too.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us and thank you to your Son too.
Have a lovely relaxed evening sweet x😊
I cannot remember seeing it either Maria, a real nice change from the usual we see in a Masala!
Thank you very much x
@GaryEats a lovely change with a deep rich sauce. It looked delicious.
Thank you again sweet x 😊
This is very interesting about the creation of chicken tikka masala. Actually a lot of the Indian food we eat may be better described as Anglo-Indian. Dishes created for British tastes during the days of the Empire and later when the UK welcomed immigrants from our former colonies. I dislike terms like “traditional dishes “. Good food evolves over time reflecting different influences and available foodstuffs . After all Indian food could only use chillies once the New World was discovered.
Thank you very much for the information
I always wondered if that story was actually true. How fabulous. It all looks great. Sometimes the original is different from the copy.
Everyone could be wrong and they could be right!
Shish Mahal i remember as a child located on Gibson Street. My family would visit regularly and such a lovely family. We still have their original cookery book from the 70s, the one you see on Amazon doesn't compare. Thankyou once again for a fab vlog from a mum from Glasgow 🏴👌
That’s absolutely wonderful som3 great memories I hope
