Fantastic find! So cool that your friend alerted you to the sale and that’s the engine you found there! And you are obviously very happy, and who wouldn’t be, that is such a gorgeous engine. I didn’t realize the 773 came with different tenders, good to know. Thanks for sharing.

As an operator myself, the only thing I'd say to not do is let this become a shelf queen.
Everywhere I go I see collectors who let these things sit on shelves, afraid of running them lest they get even the slightest little ding on their perfect locomotive. They don't realize the damage that's being done simply by letting them set. These things need to be run, it's what they were built to do.

Beautiful find and congrats! Those nice boxes add a great deal to the value and collectability of the piece. Keep in mind when you take the engine and tender in and out that that cardboard is almost 60 years old. The corrugated box for the engine is fairly safe but the thin carboard of the tender box is delicate and the lids and coupler protection flaps will tear very easily.

  • @hastyone9048

Rare find with brick boxes. In my area you would have to fight 100 people to get that Loco/tender. That is 1964-66 with the more desirable NYC tender. You probably know this already but you need 072 radius track to run that on.

Great find and incredible condition and great boxes. The difference between this one available between 64 and 66 and the 1950 release is there are no valve guides from the steam chest and obviously the tender. The 1950 model had a wonderful die cast tender with die cast 6 wheel trucks. The early 1964 tenders were lettered Pennsylvania which was incorrect, the Pennsy didn't have Hudson's. Yours is NYC which is correct. Also, yours has a backwards water scoop under the tender which may be a little more unusual. Bummer that they put a plastic tender with plastic trucks behind such a beautiful locomotive. Great find though.

Amazing find, but if you want to fix the scoop, it's an easy fix. Remove the shell, take to whistle off the frame, and the scoop is simply resting within the pocket. Lift and rotate, then put everything back together. It's a 5 min fix tops.

I'm new to model trains. Just have a couple questions.
1-how can I tell a train is ac or dc from the outside of the model train.
2- how many is too many to have of model trains.
3- what makes each brand different and why have so many engines if they all do the same thing?
    Thanks
