    Date nails are normally installed in railroad ties to know when the railroad tie was installed. The newest date nail that I found along the old Erie Lackawanna in Lima, OH was around 1954 with other date nails in the 1930's and 1940's around WWII.

      There's a group of nailheads that come to Marceline, MO, every other year for their National Convention. They also bring a lot of other railroad memorabilia to sell.

      Casstellas is correct. They are put into wooden crosswise to indicate the date a tie was laid. Naturally with weather and age the tie might need replacement. With steel reinforced concrete crossties the practice is no longer used.

    You guys got the best vintage stores out there! Here in N.Y.C. our "vintage" stores are a real joke. there are nothing more than broken and run down junk shops which have nothing to offer except the same old same old. Also, "Sophisticated" New Yorker's who like to delude themselfs, would look down and sniff their noses up at you, they think model trains is too beneath them, I'm just giving you the head's up when you come visiting here.

    Ron, those Lionel City Tractor Trailers are 1/48 scale; The PCC street cars were made by Corgi and are 1/50 scale and I recall reading somewhere? ( maybe in Classic Toy Trains Magazine) a few years back- how some guys out west- California ? , motorized them and were running them on 0 gauge track, I believe. Also, "New Bright " is : (officially New Bright Industrial Co., Ltd.) which is an American toy manufacturer specializing primarily in radio-controlled vehicles headquartered in Wixom, Michigan. Years ago, in the 1970's and on into the 1990's, they were making Battery operated toy fire trucks with all the siren sounds, flashing lights, and numerous other vehicles before graduating into battery powered toy plastic trains to put under the "tree." New Bright sold their products by me in the "east" in old icon stores such as K-Mart, Kaydee Toys, Toys R Us, etc.

    FYI, those American Flyer couplers are called link couplers. That 19B transformer is a TREASURE. No other transformer puts out 300 watts in a single throttle. The dead man throttle must be down and clicked into place. When you bring it down to the lowest voltage setting, it still sends about 4.5 volts so the E unit doesn't trip. When you lift the throttle up, it kills all voltage to the track. Check the cord for cracks, replace if needed. I usually go to Home Depot and buy an extension cord for the home and cut off the female end. Usually less than 2 bucks.

    • @classicmodeltrains
      @classicmodeltrains  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Link couplers Yup. I just had a brain fart while videoing. Thanks for the GREAT info on that 19B. I had no idea why the handle lifted up :-)

The latest issue also has power pickup on the pilot truck. But Triang seems more toward the first issue. When first released it was #R 354 and the tender was sold separately

I've not been able to find that New Haven Marx, been looking for one- had one as a kid. And a Westinghouse HO spotlight car with generator might be Gilbert HO! The Lord of the Isles loco you picked up at around 11:00 is a brilliant little thing, designed by Triang (a British toy manufacturer) in the 1950s and produced into the 1960s, it was sold either as a loco and tender (modelled after the Great Western “Dean Single”), or in a train set featuring two Great Western clerestory coaches alongside the loco and tender, Hornby (Triang’s successor) would actually bring the model back in 2007, modifying the original Triang tooling to comply with modern standards, they’d produce it for both the Hornby Railroad range, the Thomas the tank engine range (repainted with a face added to look like the character of Emily) and more recently the Triang Remembered range
    Of course, the 2007 retool is nowhere near as cool as the original Triang model, would highly recommend picking it up if it’s still there on your next visit, incredibly simple to repair and service, although finding spares for such a model on the other side of the pond may prove difficult

      @Hacksworth_Sidings ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@classicmodeltrains One thing I will warn you of (if you do decide to pick it up) is the wheels, the 1950s/60s version had thick wheels with massive flanges, resulting in the model often getting caught on switches when being run on a more modern layout, I’ve got one in my collection of vintage UK models, although I also have some Triang track to run it on without any interference, I believe the wheel flanges can be turned down to provide a better fit on modern track, though this is a modification I’m hesitant to do given that swapping the wheels out for something from the likes of Romford would be easier (and like I said, Hornby still produce the model today, modified to comply with modern standards)

    Those nails are toe nails. They are to tell when the tie was installed so they could maintain the ties and replace them. Not the date doesn’t go away when you drive them in the tie. Interesting video. Do you sell O gauge turn outs?

      Yup, A few other fellers have filled me in on what them nails are for. I do not have any O turnouts for sale

    The South Pacific engine picked up wasn't a dummy. It's a fake . Put out in readers digest. It's manufactured by high speed is what I think they are called. Got a couple myself. Came in lot buy on eBay. Got couple cars to. Gondola, tanker, can be upgraded and made to be used on n scale. But is just shelf pieces.

The rotation of the wheels. Messed with a cpl. But didn't know that the wheels are set 1/4 turn of each other. Had a few come in that wouldn't work because they were set at 180 out.
