I used to teach science in the public schools. I had a student who graduated and came back a few years later and visited. He'd been in the army learning ordnance. He pulled out his notebook, proudly, I thought, and it was bulging and crammed with information. He said, " you showed me how to take notes and its kept me alive." I was rather pleased.

Trevor touched on something that I don't think many civilians realize about the SEALs/Tier 1 community. That is the number of KIT, killed in training that happens. It is very, very realistic, dangerous training. A good friend of mine, when I last lived in Coronado, my hometown, nearly had to get out of the teams due to taking a rubber bullet to his hand. Doesn't sound too particularly bad, but these rubber bullets are small and pretty hard. It did a lot of tissue damage. Another time, this same friend of mine nearly died on a HALO jump out in the desert due to surface winds out of limits. When he hit the ground, he immediately got dragged over some rocks and into a huge cactus patch. He was in the hospital for a couple of weeks. He is no longer with us. He was a great guy and I really cared about him.

And also people simply killed doing dangerous, non-combat tasks in the military. Whether it's a training evolution, a hostile environment, or flat out hazardous job, it does happen.
Sailors fall overboard, for example. Not super often, but it happens. Never seen again. Vehicles crash, malfunction, shit happens.

Humility is critical. Lifelong shooter here, and a sailor. I did my best in combat training to listen to my Army DIs on even the fundamentals, and later with my MAs when practicing. I came out a much better shooter in all regards.
Firearm culture tends to breed a superiority complex where people think they are just the epitome of badassery, and always have to show off how much they know.
There's always 10 people better than you at any given action, but most importantly, once you think you have the ultimate answer, you stop yourself from learning anything else. That kills.

    • @SJM6791
      @SJM6791 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The last thing you said is exactly what I tell my guys in law enforcement. There’s always someone better and hungrier than you. The minute you forget that is the time you’ll get yourself or someone on your team hurt or killed. Train like your life depends on it because it does!

Excellent handling of an interview. Joe Rogan just wants the guy to tell stuff. It doesn't matter if it's overseas or the whole process. He just wants conversation on something. Replying "yeah" to both questions leaves the stage open for the person being interviewed to take the conversation in a direction they want. That's the best way to get quality content from them. He does this alot and it's an excellent way to move the conversation along in an interesting direction.

Fantastic that Trevor talks about building a Subconscious Habit. So many people try to teach skills as a conscious effort without making any distinction between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, where habits are built. Any moderate research will quickly show you that the conscious portion of your brain can process 12-40 bits of information per second. Whereas estimates for the subconscious part of your brain range from 3-20 million bits of info per second.

It's something missing in most everyone. It's easy to look at people with less experience than us and say it, but critical thinking is not always natural, and rarely in history has it been well taught.
Just look at all of the idiot adults. We all are, occasionally. And billions of people believe in some nonsense or another, from magic to conspiracies to pseudoscience to simply incorrect ideas. Learning is a lifelong struggle.
I always challenge people to look around at their peers (and themselves) and really think about whether they are actually smarter/better/whatever than any other generation. Especially when we look at our younger selves. At least new generations have access to the sum of lessons learned before them.

The Military started training people after WW2 to do their job without thinking, to make it so repetitive muscle memory takes over. They did it because they did studies of battles and found only five percent of soldiers actually shot their weapon in combat. The rest hunkered down.
As an example, when I was on Submarines we were running on the surface with the bridge manned. We were hit with 3 waves in a row that knocked us 60 feet under water. I was staring at a wall of water coming down the hatch in shock. A Machinist Mate came from berthing in his underwear, got under the hatch and pulled it closed. When he got the hatch closed he looked at me and two other gawkers with a look we all understood. We weren't real men or we would have closed the hatch.
After every incident like this you always do a little review of who did what and what was done right and wrong. Everyone in the control room said I blew the main ballast tanks, which was exactly what I was supposed to do. But I don't remember doing it. In my mind I just froze and stared at our doom. I had no idea repetitive training took over and I did what I was supposed to do.

What most don't appreciate is that combat shooting is radically different from range shooting, competition shooting, or hunting.
According to the fbi, trained police officers, at an average range of engagement of 10' or less, miss their intended target 60% of the time. For civilians in self defense situations, the hit rate drops way further.
When lead is flying up range as well as down range, shooting fundamentals go to hell for most people - even those ostensibly trained to shoot under pressure.
They say that very few rise to the occasion, but everyone falls to the level of their training. I believe it.
