The main house shutoff valve should have been swapped out to a ball valve & re-located, to be situated immediately after the city shutoff valve (prior to the pressure reduction valve).
Do you have a video of doing the maintenance repair kit? I have one, and am having a hard time figuring out exactly what tool to get the hex but off the top to access the internals to swap out...
You can use a small piece of white bread stuffed in the pipe to hold the water back until you get everything soldered, then just forget about it and the bread will break apart naturally and go down stream when you turn water back on.
Thank you for the plumbing share sir. I think your outdoors which has me puzzled, unless this is a tropical island where it never freezes. @@ko6128 A pressure reducing valve (PRV) also acts as a check valve. When the cold water feeding the water heater expands due to temperature, it doesn’t have anywhere to go other than out the T&P relief valve which is why they drip when no expansion tank is installed. The expansion tank gives the water somewhere to expand to without opening the temperature and pressure relief valve and dripping
@@joshbarron4415 ok. So with a tankless water heater, the hot water is flowing out a fixture. Doesn’t that path give the pressure somewhere to go? Thru the open fixture.
@@ko6128 Yes it does but only when it is open. The most common complaint is people find their temperature and pressure relief valve valve dripping in the morning because the heater was heating at night and the increase pressure had no where to go bc there wasn’t an expansion tank and no one was awake to use any of the fixtures.
I know it all depends but want some advice and input. Is it okay to install a PRV in place of a gate valve. Would there be any harm in doing that. Saves me work and digging. I live in a house with foundation. Please feel free to give me advice. Tes my gate valve is on the ground about 5 feet from the main city shut off
No, your house needs a valve so that you can turn off the water to the house. It would be bad to eliminate it. Use both the PRV and a good quality valve.
@SparkyChannel Honestly, what's the purpose of the gate valve if it's only like 5 feet away from the main shut off valve to the entire house. Could I just not use the valve I could care less for that valve. I can use the main shutoff valve for that
@@SparkyChannel Hi Bill. But if you replace that old shut off with a quarter turn ball valve, you'll make sure that you don't need to worry about the seat washer or packing going bad on that old shut off. Also, did you ream the cut ends of the copper line before soldering to remove any burrs and taper the ends to reduce turbulence in the line? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'm not bashing you and I know you mean well but you are misleading your viewers. Your upper and bottom pipe was not cleaned well and your bottom pipe was severely bent. The most critical mistake you made was not deburring your pipe. If you don't deburr the pipe that will cause turbulence in the pipe and disrupt water flow which will wear away the wall of the pipe and cause a leak. Also the globs of solder I see on the ground shows me you had a difficult time soldering the pipe. That is one technique to master. I made the same mistakes when I first started out. I hope this helps and I wish you the best.
great video, no filler BS and straight to the point!
Thanks!
The main house shutoff valve should have been swapped out to a ball valve & re-located, to be situated immediately after the city shutoff valve (prior to the pressure reduction valve).
Depends on code for state and local municipality
This is how a video is done quick and to the point.
Thanks!
Did that hold water? That soldering job was off the hook. It was on the sidewalk too LOL.
Does the PRV go after the shutoff valve or before ? Just wondering if it really matters
They usually have one after the PRV valve where I live, so it goes the street shutoff, interior shutoff, PRV, and another at the water heater.
Did you skip a step at 7:56 in this video? After applying the flux, don't you have to heat the pipe and apply solder to sweat the joints?
Yes, that's correct.

Excellent. What is the life expectansy of these valves? I heard it was 5 - 9 years. Why?
Your The jack of all trades sparky ⚡️
Thanks! Have a great day!
Why not rebuild as much of the whole section offline as you can? And replace the rotary knob with a nice new lever shut-off valve?
Sounds good to me.
I would of replaced the shut off valve & the water faucet to avoid any leaks or failure...It avoids problems down the road ...
Sounds good!
Sparky, if my valve is 4” wide, how wide do I need to cut the pipe? With hardware and washers, would it be 5”?
best video I could find on this subject, thank you!!
thorough and detailed - thanks for sharing this.

What about deburring copper pipe before soldering?
Yes, that is very important.
@@SparkyChannel because you put fitting directly to cut pipe th-cam.com/video/1yDS6xD4Ppc/w-d-xo.htmlm16s
would deburring the inside of your cuts be recommended?
Highly recommend
Necessary
About to install one myself, do the union threads on the regulator itself need teflon tape?
No they have a gasket
No Teflon if gasket
stupid question, regulators work vertical as well as horizontal ?
Yes, they work just fine either way.
Should we put Teflon tape on the pressure regulating valve as well or are the washers good enough?
Washers good enough. Teflon wouldn’t help
It is a compression type connection where Teflon would be unnecessary

In San Diego CA, all older homes have the water pressure reducing valves outside. It never gets below 45 😅
We have this set up in FL too.

Perhaps 15-20 years although there are rebuild kits which will keep them running even longer. It also depends on how hard your water is.

Thanks! I got that one at Home Depot. I don't know if they still carry it though. I have an Amazon link for it in the description.
Can this increase the pressure higher than what you were getting before installing the valve?
No! Typically they are factory set around 50 psi and top out at 75 psi depending on which one you have
