Well I'd say that Voctave is starting to become a favorite of this channel at this point. I am so entranced by what this team of amazing pros can do. Now add in a guest appearance by Kirstin Maldonado and we've got the recipe for something insane! They really brought their A-game for this one.

Voctave, the group that reduces everyone to giggling and shaking their heads in disbelief. Because what can you say to perfection so ludicrous that it crosses the territory into superhuman?
Edit: That last chord sounded like a full-on pipe organ.

And listening closely because after all the times I’ve listened to this, I’ve just noticed that Kate Lott (high soprano) actually goes up (again!) a split second after the rest join her on the ascent at the end. It was such a perfect blend I didn’t catch it all of those times and now I can’t on hear it. It’s amazing!

I think Jeremy Michael Lewis also deserves a credit. And both Kirstie and Jeremy did a great job with their facial expressions as well. Those smiles and loving looks that go with the presentation of love songs actually made their way into the singing. When a person smiles, you can tell it in their voice and singing.

This song is what put Voctave on the map. I think it was their second published video, but it's the one with Kirstin. Millions came to hear Kirstin sing and were knocked over by Voctave. The way they traded of the lead makes it clear this song is as much about Voctave as it is Kirstin. It is a masterful arrangement by Jamey Ray, their main arranger.

Beyond all the wonderful things that have been said, it always strikes me as how so many people singing with various parts don’t have more screw ups. I know we never see those, and there’s tons and tons of practice but it just brings to mind that everything could be going perfectly and as you get towards the end of the song somebody messes up! That must be so painful for them. I wouldn’t want to be the person that does it but I know it must happen while they rehearse and perfect the song. Kudos to all that hard work that gets them to be this brilliant.

Listen, many many many great things can be said about Voctave, and you point out a lot of great things. But a (quite) small thing, for me, is in "You'll be in my heart" at the start, where the two male singers sing "duuh" in dissonance in amazing. The timing, the pitch relative to each other and the rest, and the punch of the sound, is top quality...
Of course, I could use 412.000 words to describe how amazing Voctave are, but this was just one point ;-)
Great reaction, great points, more more more more more ;-)

Voctave and Pentatonix did Once Upon a December from the movie Anastasia. One of the most amazingly arranged songs I have ever heard. It was on Pentatonix last Christmas album. The ear candy was unbelievable. Had it on repeat most of December and January. I was a drummer in high school who went through music theory so I could be a percussionist.

Yep, just to tack on to what I am sure has already been said several times below, SO refreshing and nice when a professional breaks down other pro's performances and gives us some of the inside baseball. 1st Soprano's name is Kate, and that is an effortless F6 (near as I can tell) had the great good fortune to see her and a couple of the others from Voctave perform at Epcot in February with the Voices of Liberty...yes, they still show up on occasion (that is where they all met and started singing together). She is just as mesmerizing in person from 100 ft away as she is in this video. Keep up the great work, my man.

You should also know that they all came from the Voices of Liberty who sing live at EPCOT. Without going through all the comments, Kirstin is the female vocalist from Pentatonics and at the time of recording this, the young man singing with her was her fiancé which is where so much of that chemistry came from.

Hey man amazing reaction yet again! If you love the tension and resolution harmonies, I’d definitely recommend watching Jacob Collier. He literally markets himself as a harmonized and even invented an instrument to help him do so. I’d recommend watching his collaboration with Snarky Puppy, a modern jazz group.

If you're going to do more Voctave and you haven't already reacted to it, my vote is for their "Great Movie Medley." This one was my first time hearing Voctave; that one was the one where I realized that it wasn't a fluke. Their arrangements are phenomenal and their talent is, well, you've heard them so I don't need to say more. I apologize because I lose track of what you've heard and what you still need to hear, but I'd also suggest some of their Christmas stuff ("Mary, Did You Know?" featuring the author/composer Mark Lowry, "This Is My Wish/Let There Be Peace on Earth" and "O Come, All Ye Faithful" are some of my favorites--come on, DJ, it's almost July and what's midyear without a little Christmas!) as well as "Disney Showstoppers" if you haven't seen that one. Also, their version of the national anthem is spectacular as well and it's almost Independence Day...

If you're into reacting to something more on the rock end, I think it would be really great to consider Ted Neeley's performance of Gethsemane, the mid act climactic tension piece in Jesus Christ Superstar. One of the greatest uses of dynamic usage and one of the cleanest, hardest G5s I have seen ever.
    Enjoy!

Thanks for yet another informative reaction from a musician's perspective. I'm not going to recommend any specific Voctave tunes for future reactions, because you can literally pick anything they've done and be impressed. If you really want to know more about the group, I would ask you to take a look at an objective Voctave breakdown from a guy named Joe Malach. It provides a lot of background and includes a brief interview with Jamey Ray, Voctave's arranger, who talks about the process. I eagerly look forward to more reviews of Voctave (and you might also want to take a look at Pentatonix, VoicePlay, and Home Free, each incredible in their own way).

I liked the video, even though voctive who everyone raves about is doing something in my brain I can’t resolve. It takes a powerhouse like Kirstin to pull the melody out
From the chaos of the harmony. They are all talented singers, but this mix has the recording levels of the “back ups” at the same level as the principle singers. One thing Pentatonix does is allow the person carrying the melody, their moment. Voctive sounds like a rugby match and if you have the “ball” you better push yourself out. I am obviously hearing something different.Great review DJ, as always.

    • @Matthewrents
      @Matthewrents 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah I'm not sure I agree with this, I think it's quite clear when melody is on top or when the harmony is all moving together. To each their own I suppose, but I just don't hear it that way. The only argument I can see here is that Jeremy can get lost occasionally, but I think that's more a problem with him blending with the group rather than standing out as a lead.

Honestly, I don't care at all for the type of music Voctave sings. Not really a Disney fan and most of their other stuff isn't my jam. However they are so good I still have to listen just because their vocals and arrangements are so great.
Kirstin is always so fantastic. People don't always appreciate her because she makes everything look so effortless. In Pentatonix she is the one making the key changes for the group to follow or singing the most complicated harmony parts, She makes everyone better.
