      There's also different client which has the same graphics as original. I believe build and shoot launcher is that client.
      It has limited screen resolution so people say they use betterspades client also to fix this (never tried it)

    Just so people know, this game is beloved by many people and certainly wasn't a failure. Hence why there is a revival game that's pretty much exactly the same. This game was an absolute blast. Played this heaps in my childhood and so glad to finally see someone revive it. Game Name: Ace Squared

    Amazing video! This brings back so many memories of when I played the original and Jagex's Ace of Spades. I've played the original game 4/5 days after the 0.1 update came out during 2011 (I was ten years old then lol), and I haven't stop playing the game since then. Even when the Jagex version had it's flaws, it still loved playing it. I'm currently making a indie game inspired by the original and the Jagex version called "Trench PUNK". If you want to keep up on any updates on the game, all of my social media are the same as my TH-cam username.

    I actually loved the classes. I think they achieved their goal of making a Minecraft, TF2ish style fps and classes helped that alot. I think there should have been MORE classes, but that’s a different conversation. There were also a lot of game modes, the zombies mode in this game was my favorite iteration of the infected game mode because of how many options the zombies had with building, and how creative you could be with it. I’ve seen some crazy bases on top of mountains on the moon in ace of spades and it’s so organic. Fun weird things just happened in that game, and I’d argue classes had a large part to do with that.

    Does it feel gross to anyone else that Jagex wasn't looking to develop a new game, but 'looking to expand'? Like, does it not strike anyone else as weird that when companies get big they just start buying other people's good ideas instead of making new ones of their own?

    When Jagex re-released it initially, it was really fun. The zombie survival mode was a blast with some friends and I have fond memories of playing it. I even bought the Valentine's DLC, the VIP mode was kinda neat.
    But gradually they nerfed and buffed random things to the point that nothing was really fun anymore? All of their balancing decisions felt really poorly thought out, at least to me. As if 11-year old me would know anything about game balance. I believe the "Battle Builder" update was the final nail in the coffin for even the people who liked the new version - the game was just so far gone from what it was initially. I wonder what this game would look like today if they listened to the community and Aksoy more? How many of these things were his ideas?

    Jagex's Ace of Spades did to Ace of Spades what Need for Speed Most Wanted (2012) did to the NFS franchise. Different studio made knock-off with same branding but totally different vibes, and completely ruined the reputation of the brand in the process

    Nice Video!
    I used to play the og Ace of Spades with my friends like crazy back in the day. Hundreds of hours just playing and building.
    I remember on the release day of the Steam Version, they deleted the Servers Tab of the Website, which used to be pretty much the only way to access servers and therefore made it impossible to play the original Version until the playerbase made a new one weeks later (Buildandshoot). Although the steam Version wasn't bad bad, I still never enjoyed it. It just wasn't what it used to be.
    OpenSpades is basically Buildandshoot with OpenGL graphics. It even uses the same Servers, so you can crossplay between both Versions. Unfortunately both Versions really don't have that many players anymore. Most Servers are just empty, but that's somewhat to be expected of a 10+ years old game.
    In case anyone reading this wants to give it a shot, I recommend the 'Arms of Solitaire' Mod for AoS on Roblox. It's rather close to the original feeling, but it has a lot more active players.

    The frustrating part about this game is the fact that Jagex only brought Ben on board so they could see if people had interest in a game like Ace Of Spades so they could then release BlockN'Load. The technical issues they were talking about were that they needed more server towers to run BlockN'Load's servers, so they figured they'd kill their guinea pig game. Why? Without the Ace Of Spades name, Jagex could make more money if BlockN'Load given they didn't have to give any money to Ben's team if it did well. New game with only Jagex, so the cash would only be flowing to them. News flash, it didn't do well. Their obnoxious plan to use someone else's game to see if people would play a game like it failed miserably. Jagex is not a very good company. Free players of OSRS used to have access to a larger portion of the world, but then the mobile version dropped, and for the very first time, I came into contact with the paywall fence. Now free to play players can only play in the area with cows, copper, tin, and wood. BlockN'Load was so aggressively monetized that only whales could afford the game.

    The story of Ace of Spades is a lesson on why chasing trends just because they're popular can be the death of a game. Early days Ace of Spades carved out a niche for itself as a game about trench warfare. It was a relatively slow paced game for a shooter, but the fun of it came from slowly building up or chipping a way at defensive lines, the best map in the game was literally just a giant block with a canyon running through the middle and 2 forts on opposite ends of that canyon. Jagex's version threw away all that in favor of a worse version of TF2 with a destructible environments gimmick that added very little to game.

    I dont appreciate how reductively you talk about this game. The original was (is) great but the steam version was also great, just different. Rocket jumping or blowing people up as commando was great, so was flying around with the jetpack and so was digging tunnels or killing players with the miners drill. Flattening entire maps using the new weapons and tools battle builder added was also fun i've yet to replicate anywhere else. Battle builder was not the same as classic AoS but it was an absolute blast.

    • @LensOSRS
      @LensOSRS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you're definitely correct in that they are different games essentially. I suppose this video was more of a fall from grace of the original game itself as opposed to critiquing the second game on it's own. Thanks for the comment!

    I was first exposed to ace of spades by playing the original game, before buying the jagex version for $15. By then I had finally afforded a computer that could "run" the game at the time. Wasn't long before the game would begin to die.. A sad tale of a game, but I'm glad I was there to experience it as my first steam purchase, because my only experience outside of gaming before it was Minecraft. It taught me at a young age to curb my expectations towards games, large companies, and educating myself on purchases in general.
    I still boot up Build and Shoot every now and then and top frag on aloha pk, and it's a blast every time.

    I wish more people would play stuff like Ace Of Spades/BetterSpades/OpenSpades rather than microtransaction infested crap like Fortnite.
    AOS can actually run on a netbook with a single core 1.6GHz Intel Atom N450, which is part of why I chose to run an AOS server. I wanted something that literally anyone could play, no powerful hardware or money spent on the game itself required.

    The issues you raise are honestly stupid. If people liked the original more, they could have kept playing build and shoot/OG AoS. If they preferred the Jagex version, they could have continued playing that. Just because it costs money for the Jagex version doesn't mean anyone is forced to buy their product. Focus on the actual Jagex release itself and not on comparisons the whole time, since both were available for users to play.

    • @LensOSRS
      @LensOSRS  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I disagree. The official game itself transitioned from the f2p game to a paid version released by Jagex. While the build and shoot servers existed, this was a community ran project just to keep the old version alive. This video was to look at how it transformed after Jagex purchased the IP and eventually ran it into the ground.

    By the way, russians stole it xD
    It has a clone that's still alive today on Steam, I believe, and a few years into that clone's existence they released the Clone 2, which was an even worse P2W garbage.
    The thing is, that game had unlockable weapons, armour, utilities etc. and you could only get 1 coin per day, while most stuff was 30-75 coins, right? Or you could buy coins with real money. They added armour just so one shot weapons would become weaker...And when owners of said one shot weapons didn't appreciate it, devs added armour that guarantees blocking 2 shots lol
    Clone 2 pretty much left you without any stable way to get coins for free, added more stuff and you had to also buy attachments and some stuff was only obtainable from cases, making it all even less bearable than the first game
    Not saying the name of the game simply because screw those guys
