Splendid! The changes in tempo, time and rhythm and the ensemble playing do not give Yuja Wang any problem whatsoever. I think it is obvious that she loves the music and the role of being an important part of it. To me Yuja Wang is now a world class musician and we should pay her all respect.
Thank you NHK for making the Ravel available online. An important part of the joy of hearing Yuja Wang is seeing her play and with a good video director capturing what even binoculars will rarely reveal. From Seatlle where I first her in recital and with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London,to Munich and Mozart in LA with the LA Phil, every performance is a first hearing of pieces I have heard for 70 years. I now hear them for the first time because Yuja Wang plays them for the first time every time. Her sense of discovery is visible in the joy that some comments refer to.Even more so, her understanding and near study of the music as she plays reveals what others have also seen: a musical maturity that many musicians never achieve. Parenthetically I hope someone in a future interview asks her: what are you saying to yourself as you play? You are in frequent dialogue with yourself. This is fascinating as it is also a guide to your playing and a gift of video performances. Ms. Wang was asked at age about 24 why she played so much of the Russians. Her answer as all young concert pianists know was "that is what we are taught, and that we are expected to play." When she was asked about Beethoven she said: "You know, Beethoven is a philosopher, and before I can play his music I must understand his philosophy.". That understanding at 24 says what we and she have ahead of us.
Agree with you. For my opinion she's the greatest pianist since Liszt - technically AND because of her profound musicality. I've studied piano and composition and since 30 years I've waitet for an artist like her. Music and life can be so beautiful!
+peter herford comment wasn't to you, but the silly one saying she's the greatest since Liszt, an assertion no one can make. She's a very fine artist, very serious in her work, some of her performances are superb, some it's clear she's still playing her way into newer repertoire. Brava to her, and it's a shame she has yo undergo criticism that Argerich, a similar artist, never had to undergo.
@@Obaysch Miss Wang has (2016) played Beethoven in the meantime. She (and her management) have seen fit to perform Beethoven's op 106. It is unmistakable that she was overwhelmed with this who, she simply does not know what she is playing. At the same time, she is celebrated for her body, which she presents half-naked in a transparent dress. The sight of her thighs should compensate for the musical disaster.
As usual, I heard notes in familiar pieces that I've never heard before when Ms. Wang plays (magical). This was especially evident in her performance of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F under her mentor's 'baton' (ie. Michael Tilson Thomas), with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Mesmerizing! I am not just listening but looking at her handwork as well because it is so engaging. I stumbled upon a japanese pianist on youtube who performs very similar to her - Cateen. Check him out too. Both are amazing.
Did you hear the percussive whip crack at the beginning? Where are you jockey Laffit A. Pincay, Jr.when we needed you? Aha, but here's wonderful Yuja at her best, playing Ravelian jazz melody so beautifully. Eat your heart out Saint Martha. I am not sure, but are her two hands playing arpeggios in different keys? Is this how it is written? And then is she dragging out her glissandos? (Or, do you say glissandi?) How about that long piano solo (Where's the orchestra?) Are we listening to Ravel's Basque (Spanish) guitar like strums? Hmmm. At 7:45 she produces a tham tham rythmic sound and I find it soooo cool I started banging my drum set. It is a beautiful sight to behold when Yuja displays so much energy as if she can't wait to burst out of this jazzy jam session - ala Harlem like sound beat. Then to finish it off, at 8:16, her right fingers stays down at the white keys to draw out the color and nuances of the notes. For string players such as a guitarist, a player can influence the sound after the string is struck by sliding it on the board face. On the piano, once the string is struck, there is nothing much you can do. What Yuja is trying to do here, is to produce vibrato on the keys. And it works supremely. An Art Tatum jazz improv technique. A pianist trained as a concert pianist playing jazz? Hmmm... What more can I say? Say what? God must be in the concert hall?

El mago de Oz estuviera envidioso. Cuando Yuha toca, la atmósfera se vuelve cristalina y pura, perlas y cristales salen de las manos de Yuha, es una especie de magia....
Obaysch: Understood. I have however never understood the "XXX is better than XXX" comments. There are plenty of competitions where judges make their judgements (often to puzzling results). To hear Argerich or Wang play is to be transported into another universe, Nuff said.
Her performance of Gershwin leaves something to be desired. Technically, it's all there but the atmosphere is not quite what it should be - not loose and jazzy enough. Maybe it's just me. She is super-human though. No doubt. Who can play Prokofiev 2 like she can?

I adore Yuja. Her passion for music and her technique in playing the piano is more than awesome. What a great performer she is!!
The jazzy elements in Ravel fit very well into Juja's temperament and musicacal style
IT's weird listening to other performances after so many time listening to Argerich's but still loved Yuja's as usual :)
I love how much she looks like she's enjoying herself with this concerto.

+Michael Schefold you knew Liszt personally? Impressive.
+Obaysch NO NOT PERSONALLY, "I MET HER" REFERRED TO MY MEETING HER PERFORMANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME.

Every piece Yuja performs turns into gold. Splendid achievement. Brava!
Thanks so much for sharing this gem. Yuja Wang can touch something and it is golden.
Es verdad, Yuha es una especie de Mago de Oz, todo lo que toca se vuelve oro...
Yuja is QUEEN
Magnificent! Yuja always delivers in spades!
she is so brilliant and a star. whith such tenderness

Yes, I have noticed this also, both in the Ravel and the Shostakovich #1. Wonderful.
Yuga is a pianist on the highest level

The music itself is like a double bonjour to Stravinsky and Gershvin.
a very modern sensibility, an great heart!
