As a brass player, I feel like pointing this out. In the first couple minutes of the song, the trumpet player does some really nice lipbends. That’s an easy thing to learn, but NOT an easy thing to master. You have to rely on air strength, lip strength, ear training, and you have to memorize the feeling your lips make to get the air down there. Fantastic job.

@Tristan Giovanni i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Funny...about 2/3 of the way through, I was thinking to myself “what a sweet video production they got going here”. Then the vocal chant came in during LL’s drum break and I’m like “no, no, get the camera on the drummer, he’s effin killin it!” 😂🎶🦐
Check "What About Me?"! It's the next song out of that Snarky Puppy's album and probably my favourite :) Maybe you've already listened to it - yeah - you said that here :D
It's a stunning composition. Trumpet solo was phenomenal. You can see the player beside him gush and congratulate him on his piece. Sitting enjoying that live must have been sensational.
I owe you a beer - snarky puppy is what I was missing in my life. I don't think I would have found them with out you. Keep up the fantastic work. I love watching your videos. Look into The Mars Volta!!!! Please
the Curtain with the metropole orkest is beautiful. I did not know about SP until i saw your first reaction. I am so glad i checked it out. They are now part of my playlist. Also Dirty Loops came on my radar from your reaction. Check out Next to You if you haven't already.
My favorite thing about the whole we like it here set is just seeing how much fun they all seem to be having. Its contagious and shows through the music
after the first listen through, my preferred way to listen is really focusing in on each individual part or elements in the mix and finding all the hidden details. Would love to see you react to the Berklee ensemble recording of Drip by Tigran Hamasyan, wonderful blend of modern metal/jazz with Armenian folk music
Oh yes, I'd love to see him dive into Tigran's music. Though I personally prefer the shadow theatre live version of Drip; there's just something special about Areni's vocals IMO.
Gonna have to plug some Tigran Hamasyan again. I would recommend something along the lines of `The Grid` off Mockroot (2015) or `Nairian Odyssey` off An Ancient Observer (2017) - two very different tracks but at the same time both are extremely Tigran.
This song is so freakin’ cool. Mike League said in an interview he wrote that first guitar riff while trying to sing something Eastern-sounding, so it’s a really funky scale (B-C-D-D#-E-F#-G-A-B), and it’s really cool how he utilizes that. Listen for the C in the bass during the end of the solo section.
Not every video has to be a reaction. We'd love for you to do a REVIEW or ANALYSIS of some of these tunes, too. It's great to see you experience some great music for the first time but as a amateur composer/producer myself I find your commentary very educational.
gotta join the folks that say you should just keep going at the end.. we are in the zone.. you are such a gifted teacher.. that is the heart of these videos.. teaching.. the sharing of knowledge, right?
I had never heard of Snarky Puppy, but recently I had a video where Larnell Lewis listens to Enter Sandman once and then plays the drums show up on my sidebar. He got most of the song in that first listen. It was really amazing to see. So then when I see the name Snarky Puppy, the band he plays for by you, I have to listen. This is not the type of music I typically go for, but it's really, really good. I'm definitely going down this rabbit hole and see what else is out there. As far as format of your show, I think there is room for both, but really, do what you feel the most. I'll still watch your videos and appreciate it because I know you bring just that little bit of knowledge that allows me to appreciate songs more.
I love what you are doing for your TH-cam fans, fans of music/production, and now I love what you're doing for the Shriner's kids. Keep on keepin on my Brother
I understand what you're saying about the Dorian "vibe" but this very clearly has a b2 going on which lends more towards Phrygian in my mind. It has a very exotic flavor to me.
You are such a respectful and open analyst! I've seen a lot of your videos and you always pause at the right moment to highlight what makes the song good :) Alright!
Discovered your channel because of TOOL but enjoying a lot of what you're covering. I would probably not have heard of Snarky Puppy if not for this so thank you. Enjoyed Led Boots video too! Amazing channel!
It would be amazing to see you react to anything from Snarky Puppy's collab with Metropole Orkest. The Curtain or The Clearing are great pieces of work and I think you'd enjoy them a lot. Cheers to you sir
Re: Larnell’s snare drums. He uses three on these recordings - the other one is on the first floor tom spot and used as both a tom and snare. He got that from Sput, another Snarky Puppy drummer.
Man, your videos bring me so much joy. Such positive vibes and just overall good experiences that leave me with a big smile on my face at the end of every video. So grateful to have people like you putting this much good into the world; We need it. Every time I think of recommending a song for you to upload, next thing I know you go and do it before I post it haha. Must mean we’re all on good musical journeys! Agreed on the thought of going back and forth between reactions and reviews. I think there’s no need to go full “What Makes This Song Great?” on us, because like you said, this is about bringing the layman into the behind-the-scenes magic; Leave the music science for the other channels (which I also love). Anyway, greetings from Minnesota. Aloha! 🤙
This is the first song on the album and I think it sets such a great tone. Almost like the group is cracking their knuckles before they get to the real meat of the set. The guys who does the trumpet doesn’t even normally play trumpet, usually he’s on keys. One of my faves on the album, thanks for your content!
Interesting note, Larnell actually has three snare drums on that kit. Obviously his main snare and the 'fx' snare (smaller to his left with the splash cymbal). The third one is actually where his first floor Tom would be. It's a deep 14 inch snare, detuned so as to sit right where a 14 inch floor would sonically and with snares off, but with snares on it gives a big beefy low snare sound. It's a trick Larnell picked up from Sput, who also plays for snarky puppy (amongst others). Just found your channel through the snarky puppy and Mars Volta videos. Both massive influences on my playing, nice to see/hear your views. Keep up the good work buddy.
Oh has no one suggested 'The Brain dance' - Animals as Leaders yet? i know he will eventually hear animals as leaders but that is just beautiful fusion piece
Other songs: Quarter Master - A New Orleans Style song Binky - Great horns, that builds to an amazing ending...then a little hip-hop at the end (and it's dope as hell) Jefe - No live version to find, but it's one of the funkiest songs (mostly consisting of guitars, percussion and keys, only a little horns) Flood - a "slow" song but builds with a sick-ass solo by their original drummer, Sput Ready Wednesday - Composed by their keyboardist, Bill Laurence. This song will make you dance (also recommend the version done by Bill at Live at CHapel Hall...still has Michael and Sput, but no other Snarky members) Sleeper - Composed by trumpet player Mike "Maz" Maher, it's got a groove but is centered around the talk box on keys (played by Shaun Martin) Outlier - My favorite off of we like it here, it features Bob Reynolds doing an AMAZING sax solo (also watch the percussionist play the bongos earlier in the song)....Larnell Lewis plays in response to the solo and they play off each other (including Larnell doing an extra long fill while Bob had to fix his headset mid-solo).
Reactions like this are in my honest opinion, the best. Love your insight, you are well spoken, well informed, easily perceivable and personable. Hope to keep seeing these. Subbed
I would love to see you react to their song Sleeper. That's definitely the song that gave me the most vivid theater of the mind experience... a few gummies in. ;)
This video is perfect!! Love how you let the music play and just listen! All these other music “review”/“analysis” channels pause the song every 10 seconds 😡😡😡!!!!!
Great video! If you still want to make videos about them, I really recommend you either react or discuss a few other songs from Snarky Puppy: - Something with Lallah Hathaway. It’s absolutely stunning. - Don’t you know with Jacob Collier and Big Ed Lee. - Ready Wednesday. If you listen to this one, please listen to the original and not the remixed and remastered version, as they changed a lot to the worse in my opinion. Or make a comparison between the to versions, that would also be pretty cool. This is a great example for highlighting just how much power producers have when mixing a song. -The curtain. This one includes the metropol orchest. All tracks on this album aren’t songs anymore, they’re compositions. And they are really well done. -Semente. The following songs including video are from their studio recordings so they don’t have Videos anymore. But many of them from a composer’s view are very interesting, including this one. Tarova from the same album is also good. -Xavi, Chonks and Bad Kids to the Back are all from their newest album: Immigrance. I definitely recommend you listen to Xavi as it is a polyrhythmic masterpiece. Side Note: Some of these songs are also featured on their album: Live at the Royal Albert Hall. However I definitely recommend you check out the originals before listening to the live versions.
Listen to bad kids to the back from the new snarky puppy album - it’s a great amalgamation of their style - it also has three drummers (I’m a drummer so that’s my favourite bit)
I totally love what you're doing here, Bro. And since you mentioned the Tower of Power Horns, I've been thinking of The Fearless Flyers as the new Tower, with Snarky P's Mark Lettieri and Vulfpeck's Cory Wong and Joe Dart combining forces with a three-sax line-up and a KILLER drummer. I think you might like them. A LOT.
I think it’s super cool how Michael league is so humble in his playing. He’s not looking for the spotlight. He’s more interested in having musicians that he can spotlight. Cause obviously he is a musical genius composer but he’s also a super good musician. But rarely does he make his playing the focus. That’s really cool. And he does the arrangements obviously but he lets the incredible musicians he uses improv and solo and he makes their solos more impressive By giving them ridiculous backgrounds to solo over. Always wanted to meet this man and pick his brain 🧠
Dude.... thank you for getting to this! So excited to see your breakdown and the freaking Dorian Mode!! I couldn't put my finger on it and you scratched that itch that has been gnawing at me regarding this song. Brought me right back to my music theory classes and that's a stretch considering I'm an "Old Dude" like you! LOL Again, thanks for getting to this one. It is my favorite chill song when I have a stressful day at the office and you described that feeling wonderfully! I agree with some of the other commenters... Snarky Puppy - feat. Lalah Hathaway "Something" from the Family Dinner sessions is vocal and instrumental symbiosis that I have rarely seen! Thank for looking out for the kids man... you have a great spirit. Please keep these coming, your videos are an oasis of pleasure in the desert that is the year 2020! Aloha brother!
This is great music, thank you very much for bringing this up. This is something for hanging around in a hammock on a sunday afternoon. Very bluesy, very rhythmic, very talented. And by the way, I've learnt a new term: Shofukan. :)
I love this song, and I wasn't really sure why at first. Then I realized it reminds me of Chuck Mangione- especially with the flugelhorns- but also because it's got that middle-eastern feel to it that just sounds like a band of gypsies coming through town. Would love to see you react to Chuck Mangione's "Bellavia." So many good vibes there. Chuck was known for the amazing band he could put together, and this is right up that alley.
so glad this comment was here. also was thinking phrygian so when he said dorian, i felt a flash of confusion and disappointment in my ears and then a bunch of tension about it and had to pause and scroll the comments as im listening without my instrument to quickly check lol
@@SvenElven I'm gonna be that guy again: Phrygian *Dominant ;) The D is in there a bit, particularly in the guitar hook, but the D# is much more of a feature
I found your channel because I’m a Snarky Puppy fan, but I also really appreciate your easy-going persona here, so I think I’ll stick around 😃 Also I have done some gigs on Oahu and I absolutely love that vibe out there which I comes through on this channel, so Aloha from a pianist and singer in Nashville 🤙🤙
Snarky offers so much, you CAN go on, and on, and on! In addition to Lalah mentioned below, they also brought in Jason Collier for another fantastic session. Who knew?
IN RE: Larnell Lewis--- Normally, when someone first records with Snarky Puppy, they have played out with the band (sometimes many times). When "We Like It Here" was recorded, Robert "Sput" Searight had done 3 1/2 albums with the band , and Jason "JT" Thomas had done one. Neither was available for the sessions in Holland. League & company had seen L.L.'s TH-cam videos & brought him in cold, and he knocked it out of the park. He, "JT" and Jamison Ross remain the band's regular drummers, with "Sput" making in an occasional appearance. --- Guitarist Mark Leterri and tenor sax Bob Reynolds also came to the band via their TH-cam channels.
A new band into my brain. And I will be diggin' deeper into their catalog, thanks to you. Keep it coming. I have to wonder, what might you think of a band like Lake Street Dive? I suggest the song "better than". One of my favorites, and very different from what I have seen here so far.
Been watching since day 1 a few weeks ago when you reacted to the first tool video. Loving it. Its great to hear someone tell me about the music I love and WHY I love it
@@KeyOfGeebz Tool is my all time favorite but I know your getting to those.... For something different check out the band the Aristocrats. 3 piece instrumental consisting of Guthrie Goven, Marco Minneman and Brian Beller (GG, MM & BB). I would start with the title track of their album Culture Clash. I think they each have 12 arms...
@@KeyOfGeebz You should really check this one out! The song is named after an actual event that happened sometime in the 1800's I believe th-cam.com/video/nksxesA8fx8/w-d-xo.html
2 seconds into the video, (2nd time i noticed this) the sun coming thru the blinds is such a good feel on the video side of things but i am here for the content, so forget that.. haha
Glad to find your channel through my love of the band. I hope you get a chance to check out another album they have recorded on video called Sylva. "The Curtain" off of that would be a great reaction to be sure! 🤙
You're doing great. Thanks for doing stuff like stepping back the video after you've paused and generally being into growing and changing. I landed here because I was watching reactions to Lingus and I've enjoyed seeing the other music you've been checking out. Reviews wouldn't be bad but I like the reactions because they're a lighter mental load for everyone involved. While I'm here I'll say check out Kamasi Washington. The Epic, just all of it.
When I saw Snarky live in Memphis, they closed with this, before the "Lingus" encore. Hearing the whole crowd singing the final chorus was uplifting. That 5/4 luck in the guitar had to be handled by the lone guitarist on the gig, Mark Lettieri, the guitarist in the middle here. Michael used that lick to introduce the band over, so Mark had to keep it up, by himself, for around 3 minutes. Mark has said his hands have cramped up several times doing that.
as to a cool Prog rock/metal band to check out. Pain of salvation has some really amazing material. By the way I've seen Snarky Puppy three times. awesome videos!
Another aspect of your channel I find appealing is that it opens up new styles of music to many of us. Some of the metal guys/ladies might not otherwise be listening to SP, and conversely some jazz/fusion folks might not be familiar with the prog metal scene. Eye (and ear) opening!
Love them, great reaction! Not enough channels give this amazing band some love. Please do *Snarky Puppy feat. Jacob Collier - "Don't You Know"* next. Its mind bending.
I *really* like Shaun Martin's solo stuff. Madiba, Lotus, and The Yellow Jacket in particular. He's the one laughing his ass off at Cory Henry's solo in Lingus, and doing the talkbox on Sleeper.
I love your videos man! You really describe and point out things alot of people miss out on and never really think about. Been supporting for a while and definitely will continue the support. Keep doing what you do 🙏🏼🌸
I can't figure why "Thing Of Gold" and "Sleeper" are my (arguably) favourite Snarky Puppy tracks. Would love to see you"decompose" these tracks. Appreciate your vids by the way...
This generally is the closing track on Snarky gigs and the audience goes into the chant for minutes on end even after the band stops playing.. it's glorious.
Yes, exactly! I've been to their concert in Nürnberg two years ago and I was just blown away. I've never seen a jazz band work like that with a crowd. The best concert I've been to
As a brass player, I feel like pointing this out.
Great insight. Thanks
Thank you - I was wondering what that technique was - I’ve never heard it before (that I know of).

There's a comment on the original video about the cameras on the chanters while Larnell is "literally ripping a hole in space-time".
Snarky Puppy feat Lalah Hathaway - Something is a master class in vocal performance :)
Yup, "Something" as the name of that tune.
Her vocals will blow your mind... worth it.
You just reminded me of that. And I got goosebumps.
Definitely this. Its right up there with people hearing Jinjer for the first time. It changes how people think about the vocal instrument.
Vocals ruin Snarky Puppy songs
Check "What About Me?"! It's the next song out of that Snarky Puppy's album and probably my favourite :) Maybe you've already listened to it - yeah - you said that here :D
I’ll second that nomination for What About Me? It’s an astonishing math-rock funk-jazz jam fest.

I've just find out about these guys. Thanks! They are awesome :)
loved that little nod to Zappa or something similar with the vocals
Snarky Puppy - The Clearing, from the SYLVA album with Metropole Orkest... it's mandatory to see !
All I hear make remember the first time I've heard Billy Cobham's Spectrum back on 1973...!!!!!
More Snarky Puppy please. Great stuff on the channel
Periphery - Reptile. Going to keep requesting it until it happens! talk about a masterpiece. Also love the content. Do as many as you want.
Yes yes yes to this. Literally anything by Periphery.
I 2nd dis
This is great music, thank you very much for bringing this up. This is something for hanging around in a hammock on a sunday afternoon. Very bluesy, very rhythmic, very talented. And by the way, I've learnt a new term: Shofukan. :)
I love snarky puppy. I had no idea that kids growing up on rock music and going to jazz studies programs would produce such fantastic music.
Just discovered these videos, very nice.
Nice one, Thing of Gold is a nice, happy Snarky Puppy song, one of my favs innit
I believe it’s Phrygian, not Dorian - lots of flat 2nds
True, it is Phrygian - my brain was in the wrong key when I said it - Old composer fail.....
so glad this comment was here. also was thinking phrygian so when he said dorian, i felt a flash of confusion and disappointment in my ears and then a bunch of tension about it and had to pause and scroll the comments as im listening without my instrument to quickly check lol
I’m impressed with all of you knowing that
Hey! I was gonna be that guy!
@@SvenElven I'm gonna be that guy again: Phrygian *Dominant ;)
The D is in there a bit, particularly in the guitar hook, but the D# is much more of a feature
Louis cole/knower live sessions would be great to see you react too..anyone else?
Snarky offers so much, you CAN go on, and on, and on! In addition to Lalah mentioned below, they also brought in Jason Collier for another fantastic session. Who knew?
Man, thank you for turning me onto this band!! Just crazy good.
Daily comment for Thank You Scientist! Son Of A Serpant Live
I believe Mike told me once, that this composition was inspired by a venue named Shofukan, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. You should look it up!
This is very Incredible Band....
Just gonna bring some attention to auxiliary percussionist Nate Werth, who totally makes this song great.
Loving it. Its great to hear someone tell me about the music I love and WHY I love it
I appreciate that!
The song is named after an actual event that happened sometime in the 1800's I believe

So many players, (3 lead guitars?) all those keyboards and such, and STILL, they don't sound muddy.
University of North Texas has a kick-ass music program, evidenced by these guys.
Gives me hope for humans. That for all our bullshit, we have this up our sleeve..❤️
You’re awesome man. I look forward to these. Thank you.
What a great group!
as to a cool Prog rock/metal band to check out. Pain of salvation has some really amazing material. By the way I've seen Snarky Puppy three times. awesome videos!
Don't worry buddy, you can't mention everything on the first listen, you do an absolutely marvellous job. [for all your vids!]
Any chance for some Leprous? One of the most unique and groundbreaking bands the last couple of years imo. Amazing musicians all around in that band.
Another aspect of your channel I find appealing is that it opens up new styles of music to many of us. Some of the metal guys/ladies might not otherwise be listening to SP, and conversely some jazz/fusion folks might not be familiar with the prog metal scene. Eye (and ear) opening!
Can't wait for your next Snarky Puppy reaction!
Keep doing what you do 🙏🏼🌸
I appreciate that!
I can't figure why "Thing Of Gold" and "Sleeper" are my (arguably) favourite Snarky Puppy tracks. Would love to see you"decompose" these tracks. Appreciate your vids by the way...
