While your area for the port and comp size is probably right, the ports will do more work per area. Simply because the bullet is still in the barrel and the pressure is higher than at the comp, where pressure suddenly drops and some hot gas can also go forward behind the bullet. This following gas would've done something in the ports, but with the comp it is now lost.
I'm pretty sure it's volume of gas that is redirected away from the direction of recoil that does more work than the pressure of what gas escapes. Think about it - the recoil is the equal and opposite of the reaction - using made up numbers - lets pretend that the comp redirects 80% of the gas up and only 20 % of the gas exits the muzzle - since it's half the diameter lets pretend that 40% of the gas exits the ports and 60% makes it out plus the weight of the bullet. There's just more ejecta leaving the barrel with ports versus a comp. a chunk port up front might be closer to what a comp is - but even still - that's not going to redirect as much as a comp would.
@@TheHumbleMarksman you are right about the amount of gas. Plus, as you said in the video, the forward position of the comp is more advantageous for leverage. I just tried to point out that the comp with more than twice the opening area of the ports won't do twice the work, as the ports squeeze out more per area despite their less advantageous leverage.
great review as always fyi, comps are easy to clean, Kano Kroil. I shot a bunch of Hi-Tec coated bullets out of my XC when I got it, leading was really bad. Used a q-tip to wet the inside of the comp, then went out and shot some Berry's and it blew almost all of the lead out. Now I'm using DG Bullets or Blue Bullets, not Hi-Tec coated, and use Kroil, and almost no leading.
Ports have smaller area but gases are under way higher pressure because they push bullet and there is almost no bypass for them around bullet inside of barrel. Comps need to have clearance so gases can escape also around bullet, they are in the end of barrel where the pressure is lower. The speed difference is virtually nonexisting in case you compare the same lenght guns which these two are not.
@@TheHumbleMarksman I mean in case you want to compare apples with apples, you need to compare XC with 5" Tac Pro, or shorten the XC which would make it somewhere 3,5-3,75" barrel gun and the speed would drop to 4,25" Tac Pro level.
@@ggrandcz I will do a short on this - but I am willing to bet a 5" ported barrel will be similar velocities to a 4.25 barrel with a comp. The 5" gun I also chrono'd while filming this video got 5% faster velocities than the 4.25 non ported gun. a 5" ported gun isn't the same as a 4.25+comp - technically.

Great comparison. There is a 5" Tac Pro on the Bul site. Same price as the 4.25" at $2250. Sold out though. I'd be very interested in that, I think. I'm loving my SAS II Air. How about an Air vs XC review?😉
To clean the carbon build up on on my ported 1911/2011's I use a 1/8" Brass pin punch. It is soft enough to not scratch the bbl, yet cuts the carbon beautifully. It kinda acts like a pencil eraser does on paper. A real time saver! ;
The XC is listed as a Duty/Competition gun. I watched other videos you had on the XC. In a 2011 platform if you had to pick one to carry every day for personal defense and for dealing with predatory pests on your farm if you had one what would be your pick with respect to the durability of the gun and the finish for rust prevention, reliability whit a range of ammo, and dependability that you would bet your life on it going bang every time. I am aware of the cleaning requirements for 1911 and 2011 firearms.
Recoil has everything to preserved momentum/energy. The momentum of the projectile away from you is calculated by its weight and velocity. So both values affect recoil not just one or the other. The other factor is how short/long the lever arm is or, in other words, how close you can get to the fulcrum of movement(height over bore and hand position high in beaver tail using webbing of hand etc)
Would like to see the XC against the Tac Pro 5 i feel like thatd be a more fair comparison regarding overall feel. Great video, i like how you broke down the length of travel in the barrel for ports v compensator and overall escape space, some things ive never heard before always nice to learn new stuff. Your comparison videos are always informative and consciously thorough, i enjoyed this one.
As far as a 4.25” carry pistol. I can’t think of any scenario outside of a ground war and not having a long gun where one would ever be shooting at anything 100 yards away. Outside of a really stupid and ill prepared terrorist 🤷🏻♂️
You make a point about the port area compared between the two, but you haven't mentioned that the ported barrel is venting high pressure gas, as it's coming out while the projectile is still sealing the end of the barrel. Where as gas coming out of a compensator is actually low pressure, because there is nothing sealing the end of the comp to create that high pressure gas redirection. You certainly lose velocity with barrel ports because you are dropping the pressure, but you shouldn't lose that much with a comp because the projectile has already left the barrel before the gas can even get into the comp. It'd be very interesting to get them both on a ransom rest and running them to see which is actually more effective by how far the gun lifts.
Also pressure isn’t the major reason there is a reduction - it’s more to do with gas volume - you are venting more unburned powder as well as gas with ports.
@@TheHumbleMarksman Boyles Law would argue that. I'm an open shooter too and have had barrel ports added to a comped gun and it halved muzzle rise. Empirical data of course. th-cam.com/video/3xEI36Dtf04/w-d-xo.html It all has to work as a system, the gun, springs, ammo etc, i just don't think its a simple as calculating port/comp area. What works for one person might not for another. Not here to cause arguements at all, i love watching your content. Would be interesting to see the numbers :).

Biggest gripe I have seen about the Staccato XC is the slide release being so far forward that most people actuate with their support hand. Is that the same with the Bul Armory? I noticed that is one area you did not discuss during the ergonomics section.
That’s a 1911 thing and has been that way for 100 years. In the scheme of what a gun is supposed to do - that’s pretty low on the list. Use your support hand as you rebuild the grip

as an owner of one, I say wait, they will be releasing one that takes p320 mags, better grip pattern, fixing the guide rod backing out, and they will be offering a bull barrel, if the price goes above 2500 for that spec I would go with the bul armory, however if it stays within same price of that 2200-2500 range start weighing in how much you like customizability, because stealth arms currently does provide the best actual CUSTOM ordered 2011/1911 in the price range. if you want the most flat shooting gun, its not the platypus, hell the prodigy shoots flatter than the platypus in its current state

I chrono'd it and shot at the same time - the XC is much easier to shoot still since they weigh about the same and the XC has a comp versus a 5" non comp gun.
if you a compare Staccato XC with something from bul armory you should compare it with the bul armory radical 5.4 and not with the bul armory tac 4.25 comp you compare sport gun with tactical gun it's not the same category and has so many differences it's like compare lamborghini REVUELTO to Audi S8
Eh I disagree - it's a 2011 that vents gas through ports versus a 2011 that vents gas through an island barrel comp. How they're marketed don't really move the needle for me.
Question...competition wise, what can you use these guns for besides IDPA? Running either in USPSA open wouldn't be ideal. What do you, David, use them for? I recently bought a Staccato P Heritage 4.15 for carry and USPSA limited optics. I was looking at the XC but I'm not a giant fan of IDPA.
@@TheHumbleMarksman To add to this, now days you have to be careful or test a lot. So many ammo manufacturers are going to plated bullets. Both TMJ and open bases bullets. The makers of Berry's bullets which are plated state flat out that they are not for ported bbl's. comps are not affected like ports are. Blazer brass, Fiocchi, and in a different way, Winchester white box are an issue. the Winchester has a cupped base with very soft lead core which allows them to deform easily. . In ported bbl's, especially larger ports such as a Stacc port, the base expands into the poots and is shave off which leaves lead deposits inside the slide. Plated bullets are much worse. Even fully lapping the inside of the bore and counter boring the ports from the inside do not stop this, only lessen it.. Longer range accuracy is very affected. At 20 yards, huge difference! I see normanly jacketed bullets that are brass jacketed still deform slightly at the base whereas quality coper jackets are virtually unaffected. Same with the steel jacketed and then plated bullets from Tul and wolf. Totally unaffected. Issue is even though we may know not to use tmj bullets which is a plated bullet, most ammo makers are not telling us that the are tmj but rather still put fmj on the box. GRRRRRR!!! Another way to save money and make a better profit as plated bullets are substantially less expensive to produce. I've been porting bbl's for my use and fellow shooters since 1993 and have gained a lot of insight in this area. My C2 sports three ports and a Genghis type comp machinated in to the slide and muzzle. It shoots extremely soft. :
In terms of comped guns you've said faster, lighter rounds are better for reducing recoil. Is the inverse good for non-ported/comped guns? Would a standard gun have less recoil with a heavier, slower round?
That's the general rule, yes. In my limited gun (40 S&W), I'm rocking 165 grain projects with about 3.3 grains of titegroup powder out of a 5.5" barrel. This gives me a .40 S&W that just makes major power factor while recoiling like a stout 9mm. Edit: I could look for a heavier projectile, but I have about 10k projectiles to get through first.
For non comped guns heavier rounds are slower and produce softer felt recoil more of a push than a snap like you notice with lighter rounds. Its definitely noticeable during slow fire but during rapid fire and when shooting multiple targets its hard to tell/ notice the difference.
@@ZChaosFactor I can definitely tell the difference in rapid fire. I have an extended Glock slide release. With snappier loads, that thing chews my palm up. With the lighter loads, it's just mildly unpleasant. So depending on the ergonomics of a gun, it can also make a difference.
@geraldholt2755 I will agree it's all gun dependent sure. But comparing reloads is somewhat tricky. My take is running a course of fire with 115gr and 147gr ammo making the same power factor I really really doubt 99% of the population will see any changes in time or hits. For extended periods of shooting and specifically like static target heavier factory ammo will feel softer.

i think you are the only person on youtube to make videos on the sas ii 4.25 Pro version as of this post. appreciate the reviews.
Great comparison. There is a 5" Tac Pro on the Bul site. Same price as the 4.25" at $2250. Sold out though. I'd be very interested in that, I think. I'm loving my SAS II Air. How about an Air vs XC review?😉
To clean the carbon build up on on my ported 1911/2011's I use a 1/8" Brass pin punch. It is soft enough to not scratch the bbl, yet cuts the carbon beautifully. It kinda acts like a pencil eraser does on paper. A real time saver! ;
Wait… what happened to the BDE and dad joke intro? I enjoyed those.
Giving it a break for now. The truly high quality ones were coming harder to find.
6:30 is the best time on the clock…………hands down.
You’re welcome
The XC is listed as a Duty/Competition gun. I watched other videos you had on the XC. In a 2011 platform if you had to pick one to carry every day for personal defense and for dealing with predatory pests on your farm if you had one what would be your pick with respect to the durability of the gun and the finish for rust prevention, reliability whit a range of ammo, and dependability that you would bet your life on it going bang every time. I am aware of the cleaning requirements for 1911 and 2011 firearms.
I've been a Bul Transmark owner since the late 90's...love 'em. Seriously good bang for the buck.
Great comparison DAVID!! Thanks for the review. Have a good week Brother!!
No mention of the rest of the ejecta…
I think everyone knows that. It misses the point here entirely as pertaining to ports and comps.

Great video I would like to see the Staccato XC go up against the Atlas Athena
Yes!!! Great request let's see that battle.
I prefer the xc but Athena has top notch build quality
The more reviews you do on Bul pistols the more I want one. Always Appreciate your in-depth reviews especially the attention to the little details.
I have both. I'll let you know shortly.
@AraAshjian777 i have the tac pro 5 and have been considering the xc for a while so that'd be great I appreciate it
I fancy myself a firearms expert, I'd say go with more velocity EVERY time. Then, when you miss at 100 yards the bullet "could have" done more damage
As far as a 4.25” carry pistol. I can’t think of any scenario outside of a ground war and not having a long gun where one would ever be shooting at anything 100 yards away. Outside of a really stupid and ill prepared terrorist 🤷🏻♂️
Great video and a good explanation of the different port systems. Very nice indeed. On the whole I'd be pretty happy with either gun.
As an open shooter - it’s a comp - 100%.
Empirical data of course.
th-cam.com/video/3xEI36Dtf04/w-d-xo.html
It all has to work as a system, the gun, springs, ammo etc, i just don't think its a simple as calculating port/comp area. What works for one person might not for another. Not here to cause arguements at all, i love watching your content. Would be interesting to see the numbers :).
@@jasenolan7357 ports and comps is obviously better - the best set up open guns run popples and comps- but just comp versus just port - the comp is going to win.
LOVE Ingram ammo!!! Have used in major comps and never disappointed!
If I had kids, I would totally rock that big dad energy shirt.
Thanks for the video. Would you consider reviewing the Rock Island double stack 1911? Their pro match is a 5" bull barrel and sub 1k price; Hayes Customs does modifications packages as well.
when they do optic cut guns I will immediately
You probably meant Rock Island not Hayes my bad!
Wish you would have used the TAC PRO 5" BUL Armory instead!!! 😎
Great video, I have a SAS II 3.25 as well as a SAS II Tac Pro 4.25 coming in this week. As far as oil goes, I use Amsoil 0-20 and it's the best. I even use it to clean with too.
Motor oil is pretty good stuff - but I’m telling you accuracy oil is on another level.
@@TheHumbleMarksman Might want to look into Amsoil motor oil specifically.
Excellent and very helpful explanation, David! Well done. However, we did miss the dad joke though. I would still say, I would choose the Bul Armory than the Staccato. Mostly due to cost factor. Staccato is nice but at +$2K more is a tough justification.
BDE can retire, it’s overplayed.
Great review with none of the “look at me” superfluous stuff that seems to be in the others. Subscribed!
I would like to see the equation how you calculated that the ports on the bull gun are weaker than the staccato compensator. I'm very interested in that axiom, since I'm a mechanical engineer and don't think it's possible, unless you work at NASA?
Great video, but I'm waiting on the DWX review
Love my C2 9mm
2024 New Bull Armory pistol is right around the corner. I am pretty sure you could get in your hands from Bull Armory. I would like to know is it better than Staccato. I looks and is pretty identical to Staccato by all measures.
I already have a Tac Pro (2024) - I'll be ready to drop that video in a couple weeks - I wanted to spend a lot of time with it.
Very informative review on two great target pistols, Thank You.
Always the Best Reviews!
Another great content creator for the 2A movement! Love your reviews, I hope to accomplish a fraction of what you have on my channel!
well I fell for the pitch, just order the accuracy and carbon remover oils, thanks for the code! Looking forward to trying this product
Great review of both great pistols Thanks for the comparison. I’m like you I’d like to test the 5” BUL when it comes out. Keep up the fanatic videos always a joy to watch and learn 👍👍
Love the comparison. Trying the oil you suggested.
Have you tried the Tac Pro 5”? It feels super smooth.
Based on your video, and my experience owning a Staccato P, I’d choose the XC.
I’m waiting to shoot my friends Bul Armory SAS II 5-inch (non ported version). The only problem he’s having is finding extra Bul Armory mags.
Question. Which P do you own. Thanks
I've bought all my extra Bul mags off their website, no issues. Fast shipping
@@Charlie-go6eb I bought mine a year ago - the Staccato P DPO w/steel frame (and SRO). I’d prefer the newer aggressive grip and slide cut X-series, but I have over 5k rounds with no issues so I’ll keep her stock.
@@brianb3628 Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about going that route but with a threaded barrel to add a comp. I’ve never shot a Staccato but imagine its bettermthen my Bul SAS ii 4.25.
@@Charlie-go6eb I have not yet shot my buddies Bul Armory SAS II 5-inch, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either pistol.
Just ordered the 5" Pro. Guess you'll be doing another video! 😁
No dad jokes 😭
I’m curious to see you do a head up on the 5 inch ported bull when it comes out and a XC I don’t own a XC but I do own a dsc v8 ported 5 inch prodigy and several compensated guns and that v8 prodigy is hands down the flattest gun I own! The bull ports and the dsc v8 look similar.
THE POWER OF MATH definitely got me to subscribe!
Just a heads up TH-cam is up to their old tricks I just noticed a bunch of my 2A channels do not have the notification flags on now your channel also had that flag turned off
Thanks for the heads up. Yeah they are playing election year games right now
No brainer, I picked both lol!
The bul comes in 5" too. The bul's are harder to get your hands on tho
Are there any advantages/ disadvantages that come into play when shooting the TAC vs TAC PRO when considering the TAC has an aluminum frame and the TAC PRO has a stainless steel frame?
lighter guns jump more.
@TheHumbleMarksman looking forward to seeing your video on the TAC 5 PRO
REM oil is pretty smooth, it has teflon in it.
I understand that dries out pretty quick.
@@TheHumbleMarksman There's a video idea, do it project farm style. I got my hand on Rem oil on deployment and it was the smoothest oil I've used. I wasn't sure who brought it overseas, but it sure beat the CLP we were given. I wasn't a grunt but rem oil made me fidget with my M4's charging handle a lot because how smooth it was.(in a safe environment without loaded magazine).
Easy math for me, Bul is roughly half the price but WAY more than half the gun a Stacatto is. Bul is doing it right.
As price increases, the benefits lessen. It is the way it is in all custom products. Yet we still strive for the pinnacle in performance.

A wise man once said"Man who stand on toilet, is high on pot"
Great content sir! Love the knowledge
I have an XC and just received my 5" Tac2 Pro. I'll let you know soon which I like better. 😊
I haven't shot my buddy's yet.
I would instantly buy a Ported Stainless Bul 5"
Great content as always. What would you pick. Prodigy customized your way or the bul tac pro. Seems like more bang for buck with the tac pro. Looking at buying first 2011. Thanks
Why didn't we compare the Bul Pro 5" to the Staccato?
Because it’s a 4.25 port gun to a 4.25 gun+comp.
Nice guns 🔥🔥 and a really good review.
How's the platypus compared to either?
as an owner of one, I say wait, they will be releasing one that takes p320 mags, better grip pattern, fixing the guide rod backing out, and they will be offering a bull barrel, if the price goes above 2500 for that spec I would go with the bul armory, however if it stays within same price of that 2200-2500 range start weighing in how much you like customizability, because stealth arms currently does provide the best actual CUSTOM ordered 2011/1911 in the price range. if you want the most flat shooting gun, its not the platypus, hell the prodigy shoots flatter than the platypus in its current state
Don't get a Prodigy. They're a hit or miss. More often miss. Mine will not run unless it's CAKED in oil.
@@klausb1758 could you educate me on that, im kinda new to the 2011 field, and am just wondering if that would be considered "break in" for the firearm
my barrel bushing on the platy wouldn't turn to save its life, but after 1000 rounds its butter.
@russiancommy As many rounds as mine has through it, it should be "broken in" by now.
I'm new to the 2011 world too, and I don't think it's worth it, unless you have time or money. Probably be better if you have both.
I also have a DWX Compact. It's awesome. Waiting for a DWX Full size to come in stock, and then I'll get rid of this POS Prodigy.
@@klausb1758 im jealous for sure, I bet that dwx is SWEET, I am waiting for a optic version though, for the price that it is sitting at, im holding a grudge that its not.
I've been extremely interested in the shadow 2 platform/cz platform all together, might have convinced me to give one a shot soon.
Can you use the Dawson Precision tool less guide rod on the Bul Armory?
probably
I'm running an Atlas 4.25 tool less guide rod in my Tac Pro if that helps any.
Hello! The 5 inch came out a while ago, you thinking about doing a sas ii pro 5 vs XC? Would be a little more of a fair comparison maybe! Cheers!
Thank you, this was great
Would you consider doing a video on how you clean your compensators? I have a couple PMM equipped guns and am new to the game… can’t seem to get that lead out
Either a brass pick and patience - softening it up with some kind of solvent - or you can use the dip - but now you have a super toxic bottle of stuff to deal with
Is it worth a round two with the new 2024 Tac Pro? A little more weight on the frame. I’ve seen people saying the new one with the full length steel frame shoots a little better than the old aluminum short frame.
They definitely closed the gap
Cannot wait until I see the 5 inch pro tac
If you haven't seen the new one they are releasing you should find the video from Shot show. It will now have a full length rail that looks awesome, and they are getting rid of the stainless small parts so that now it will be all black except the barrel. I absolutely want one! James Reeves channel TFBTV Show time. It was posted about 6 days ago
Cool video thanks for the info
Love your vids! Great video. Very informative. Couldn’t help but wonder how the SAS II AIR would have stacked up against the XC.
I chrono'd it and shot at the same time - the XC is much easier to shoot still since they weigh about the same and the XC has a comp versus a 5" non comp gun.
@@TheHumbleMarksman Now you got me wondering how the nicer CZ Shadow/Tactical Sports pistols might fair against the XC??
I like shooting compensated guns and own a couple of old-school ones from the 80s. Too bad they get my tinnitus fired up.
double plug.
AMMO Question - reloads - soft shooting ammo w a regular non ported G19. would you say 115 or 124 faster or slower? im lost - HELP
147 with a fast powder
if you a compare Staccato XC with something from bul armory you should compare it with the bul armory radical 5.4 and not with the bul armory tac 4.25 comp
you compare sport gun with tactical gun it's not the same category and has so many differences
it's like compare lamborghini REVUELTO to Audi S8
Eh I disagree - it's a 2011 that vents gas through ports versus a 2011 that vents gas through an island barrel comp. How they're marketed don't really move the needle for me.
cool@@TheHumbleMarksman
Wondering how the CZ Tactical Sport 2 would compare to these?
Yes the massive uncontrollable recoil of a standard 9mm needs to be tamed, I mean come on man they will blow out a lung. 😂
That’s scary!
It's not that it can blow out a lung, but rather fast you can blow out both lungs, the heart, and the 'T". LOL!!!

Nice
Do you have a video on the Bul Armory Tac 5 or Tac 4.25 ? (No pro model, not ported)
yeah a 4.25 I did one a while back - but it's not new spec. Mine is a '22 so it's a steel frame, RMR cut only.
@@TheHumbleMarksman ok thank
Question...competition wise, what can you use these guns for besides IDPA? Running either in USPSA open wouldn't be ideal. What do you, David, use them for? I recently bought a Staccato P Heritage 4.15 for carry and USPSA limited optics. I was looking at the XC but I'm not a giant fan of IDPA.
BUL ARMORY SAS II ULTRALIGHT 3.25″ COMP review please :D
Wouldn't it had been better to compare the tac 5 or tac 5 pro to the XC since they are yhe same size?
The barrel on the XC is commander length but the dust cover is 5” - do you go by barrel or dust cover?
Great comparison… I want both 😂
Any recommendations for a safety delete kit? To remove the lefty safety from an ambi safety 1911...
any single sided safety will do the trick.
To me the Air looked flatter than the 4.5 ported tac
Is copper jacket "sprawl" a concern with ported guns? Nightwood Guns had a interesting YT talking about it.
it can be - avoid TMJ rounds
Looking forward to seeing you at TriggerCon.
Its definitely noticeable during slow fire but during rapid fire and when shooting
multiple targets its hard to tell/ notice the difference.
@@ZChaosFactor I agree completely in that light.
good job
