Hard to believe that a song written by a generation X rocker would connect so powerfully with a country artist 30 years older. To me it connects generations. For Johnny and his contemporaries, drugs were used and life was lived hard, but you kept it to yourself and your family. The challenges suffered by our grandparents are still felt today. I'm 57. The first singer I ever remember hearing was Johnny Cash. He lived hard, loved hard, and fought hard. He did music, drugs, and women. He started out at the same time as Elvis and traveled the country with him and other legends in a car at the beginning of their careers. He watched his brother die from falling into a saw as a child and then lived in his brother's shadow the rest of his childhood. To say the man battled demons is an understatement. he lived a thousand lives in a few decades but never found peace of mind in any of them. I hope he has now.
We sometimes forget that the elderly know what life is. They've been there. They've done it. We sometimes think we invented the world, we think we are smarter, we think we are better, but the reality is, we know shit compared to them. We are nothing compared to them. They are the ones that have fought battles so we can live as freely as we do today. They have had an entire lifetime of hurt, of pain, of everything. This is why we should respect our elders. Always.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash, he was, and is, one of my favorite musicians. I have a lot of respect for this man as he was able to rise above his past. Johnny Cash - patron saint of the tragically flawed everyman, and a martyr to the plight of the disposessed. If you know Johnny and don't love Johnny, you're a horrible human being.
@@src3360 Johnny was never about race. Ever. In fact, if you knew anything about him at all, you would know that he was dyed-in-the-wool anti establishment, anti-power structure, pro-prisoner, and a staunch defender of ANYONE who'd been shit upon by suits in shiny glass buildings.
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nail wrote & sang this song about his drug addiction. Johnny Cash may not have done this song originally but he owns this song with what he put into it. Mr. Cash died very soon after doing this, his daughter said when she heard him recording it, it sounded like he was saying goodbye. His wife, June Carter, had passed not long before he did this song. Just thought you would like some of the history behind the song & Mr. Cash. well hell.. I did use the word before instead of after.... hate when I do that... Tae... she died not long AFTER Mr. Cash did this song.
@@leannmiller7153 correct. he knew at the time though that they were both near the end. To me this was his apology to her and the kids for what they had to endure because of the hard life he led for so long. at the end of the song the lyric says if I could do it all over again I would but I'd do it differently. (a million miles away) the visuals show Jesus' crucifixion as a symbol of how Johnny did eventually clean up and get right with God says to me that if he did it all over again that his "coming to Jesus" moment would have been much earlier.
Not discounting the value Cash brings to this song but to say he owns this song borders on offensive to TR fans. This song IS Trent Reznor. Having said that, TR says he was touched by Cash’s version.
Sweetheart, it didn't ALMOST get you. It did!! Thank you, young man for a reaction to the best legend. The "MAN IN BLACK". I am 52 and grew up with a lot of legends of all geners of music. The man in black is on my top of ALL. Sending love, good health and light to all. SE VIRGINIA FOX

Johnny had a rough life. Some of his own doing. He lost his brother in a terrible accident and his father blamed him. He was a drug addict he went to prison. He married and had children but then he fell in love with June Carter. They married and they had a strong love. She died first and he not long after. Interesting man you should watch more of his videos. You will enjoy them.
@crafty litigator yes he did. I found that out young. My neighbor died and her husband died days later. My mother told me that he died of a broken heart and I never forgot it. Take care and stay safe😷
@Thora Friganza June filmed the video, then went into the hospital for surgery and died. The video was released a few weeks later. When I saw it the day it dropped I got chills because it was as if June was a ghost
If you wanna know about Johnny, watch ”Walk the Line”. It has Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter. It’s a masterpiece. Joaquin spent alot of time with Johnny before he passed, to prepare for the role. He even learned how to sing like Johnny.
Watch “I Walk the Line” movie for starters. It’s good and very very close to his autobiography. Of course, that might lead you into a rabbit hole to explore the Carters and Waylon Jennings... but that is a pretty good rabbit hole! Johnny also had a variety show on TV, it was good. Lots of music history with Johnny.
He passed away right after that video and his wife had passed away before the video back in the day Johnny Cash was a rebel go over some of his old music like cocaine blues or Folsom prison when he was there
This song may have just saved my life.. Came up on my feed and it said exactly how I feel. Been having dark thoughts and just wanted everything to stop... Forever. I decided to share it in my FB feed with the following comment. ... - - - ... Only one of my friends got it and got in touch. Not saying it was a instant relief but him getting in touch knowing something was up helped.
I love Johnny Cash's music so much, and this particular song is a heart-breaking favorite. The building featured in the video ("House of Cash" museum) burned down after an accidental fire a few years after Mr. Cash passed away. I was lucky enough to hear Johnny Cash in concert as a teen. I grew up in Bakersfield, CA, & he, June and one or two of his daughters performed with him at the Civic Auditorium around 1974. It was wonderful. Afterwards, he asked if anyone wanted to come up and shake his hand. I think I was about 14 years old, and my parents said, "go!" I only remember a few specific handshakes in my life, but I remember that one well. His hand was big, worn & calloused. He seemed like a kind man. I think when June died, he just gave up. They adored each other.
His reaction was about as genuine as it gets. I'm always in awe of what Mr. Cash put into his version of this song, and it chokes me up the same way, it's nice to see people appreciate it.
I loved watching your reaction to this song. It was originally performed by Trent resnor from nine inch nails. But after hearing Jonny sing it. Trent gave it to him. He no longer took any credit or acknowledgment for it. What a respectful selfless thing for him to do. Such an honor, and beautiful tribute to one of the most iconic artists of all time.
If it almost got you, then knowing the story behind it will crush you. This is from an album of cover songs he did. "Hurt" was originally done by Nine Inch Nails. That is his wife, June Carter Cash. They were together for decades, including during his struggles with addiction. She died just days after the video was shot. He didn't live much longer without her. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails has said that even though he wrote the song and first performed it, it no longer belongs to him. It belongs to Cash now. And if you really want to go for emotional devastation, listen to "September When It Comes" by his daughter Roseanne Cash. He sings in it with her and it was recorded not long before his death, like within days of it. You can hear the age and fatigue in his voice during his verses. You can tell he's saying goodbye to his daughter. I'm gonna go cry now.
Everybody loved Johnny back in the 60s and 70s-country music fans, rockers, follies, black, white. He had as much soul as any singer alive, even if he didn't always sound on key or melodic. He also had a soft spot for the poor and oppressed and worked in their behalf his whole life. A real man! RIP.
It's about regret and his wishes that he had been a different person throughout his life that was nearing its end. And I bet you know a song or two from him but never knew it was him. You might enjoy "A Boy Named Sue"
BrooklynGal mine is when he starts crying after that, at the end of the clip at the table 😭 Johnny’s biography was an amazing read, he was a beautiful soul.
This is the only music video that's ever made me cry. My dad got diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease recently at the age of 75 so this video hits even harder now.
He was country musics "rebel" to say he lived a colorfull life would be one hell of an understatement. He was one of country musics greatest pop stars. It would be worth your while to find out more about him. God bless.
Let's put it this way if there was a country singer Mount Rushmore Johnny Cash would be one of the faces the song was originally done by Trent Reznor Nine Inch Nails he was hesitant about letting Johnny Cash sing it until he heard the track and then he said this is no longer my song this is a Johnny Cash song the woman standing on the staircase behind him is his wife June which passed away shortly after filming this video and I do believe that within a year he passed away
Curtis Blanton what was worse for me was June (his wife) died first before it came out: they show her face around the time he sings “everyone I love go away in the end” without knowing she would pass soon after. She died, this hits main screen time, I bawled like a child.
It's almost impossible to describe just how big of a Super Star Johnny Cash was. Country Music Star, Pop Music Star and Gospel Music Star, along with being a Movie Star. BUT, you have it right... all that in the end was worth nothing to him. In spite of all that Stardom, he was an alcoholic, drug addict, spent time in jail and beat his wife so he was all too human. The flashback clips don't come near to showing how big he was or show how much emotional pain he was in for most of his life. Thank You for your reaction!! I'm wondering if this one song will have more impact on more people than all his other music combined because here, he's teaching of so much about life...
If a song like this doesn’t move you, tears or not, I don’t care about that, you’re not human. With a song like this if you shed a tear you still retain your man card.
I hurt everytime I see a video of him doing this song and a big ole tear runs down my cheek. And dont worry a bit about my manhood, as I only care about my humanity.
The video insert where he says, "You stay the hell away from me, you hear!" is from a "Columbo" TV episode where Johnny Cash's character is the suspect.
This song was originally written by Trent Reznor of NIN back in the 90's and talked about drug addiction and fame. "The needle tears a hole" refers to the Heroin epidemic and how many lives were lost old and young to addiction. Addiction even stung the rich and famous. Mr. Johnny Cash did this remake in his later years. Mr. Cash also suffered from life long addiction fueled by fame and fortune.
I grew up listening to rock then metal Then was turned to 70's and 80's Funk SoS band George Clinton etc But always left my mind open to anything and everything Johnny Cash just had more then a voice Nine inch nails done a awsome job of the same song when it first came out And you know how hard it is to do a copy of the same song even if there was a 10 - 20 year gap? It's never the same groove or feel ...Johnny in my mind Nailed it Because he rode the same path that song went Like alot of his songs That old saying "Just be yourself" Johnny Cash my friends ..Amazing talent
The old expression: "It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all" is particularly apropos here. I watched this video and I feel pain for him and for my own life experiences. Life is wonderfully painful, joyful, full of incredibly good experiences and heartbreaking ones as well. I love, I hate, I am loved and hated. I've had my heart broken, I've broken a few. Life if dirty, uncoordinated and without order...but the most amazing gift. Life is a tragedy...everyone dies. Live a good life and die a good death, with dignity. Life is pain...but BEAUTIFUL!!
Grew up with parents who listened to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and the Carter Family - it was constant. But this? This has always been my absolutely favourite song by him.
johnny cash has been around since the late 50s early 60s. a lot of his stuff is very rockabilly, which is a mix of rock n roll and country. hes had hits like "ring of fire" and "folsom prison blues" he sang for the blue collared life and was very outspoken. he was amazing.
He had an early life of extreme poverty, and when he found success as a musician he developed a killer drug and alchohol habit. Years later he married his wife June and she hauled him back from self destruction. She wasn't supposed to be in the video but she came downstairs to check on Johnny and the director asked her to stay. They were married for 35 years until she died, four months after the video was recorded, and with his guardian angel gone, Johnny Cash died three months later. Trent Reznor, who wrote the song about his drug addiction, heard Cash's version and said, "it's not my song anymore, it's his".
Gate Guard 1: "You hear that? its country music!" Gate Guard 2: "CLOSE THE GATE" Gate Guard 1: "Its Johnny Cash" Gate Guard 2: "Open the gate a little bit"
If you want johnny cash there are his serious songs like "Ring of Fire", his more comedy tracks like "One piece at a time" Then there are some a little in-between like "A Boy Named Sue"
Whenever I need a cry, I always listen to this song. I mean....it just....If they ever made a musical time capsule for 1000 years later, this would be in there. How have you not heard this before???
Thank you for your reaction to this song. I really never listened to it before. Watching you listen to it. I really heard it. It resonates for me as deep regret for things we cannot change. Thank you.
It is amazing how Cash changed the original meaning of the song. As an older adult, there are plenty of thoughts about your life, your sins, your missed opportunities and the very real human feeling that you didn't do your best and you let someone down. Yet, in the end, you are who you are. The irony for me is I never got to hear Cash sing live and actually just missed him at the Grand Ole Opry the one time I was there. It was something that always bugged me because he was a favorite of my father's. In the late 1990's, I was in Jamaica eating dinner up on the hill near Rose Hall with a friend when I noticed a man tending to some bushes on his property. I quickly realized it was Johnny Cash so I left the table and went over to introduce myself. I told him about the missed opportunity to hear him live, my regret and we had a quick chat about that and a few other topics. He came across as a very genuine person. When Hurt came out a few years later, it really hit me.
Just watching how he caressed the piano after closing it .. like closing a coffin of a loved one.

Johnny Cash - patron saint of the tragically flawed everyman, and a martyr to the plight of the disposessed. If you know Johnny and don't love Johnny, you're a horrible human being.
Horrible here 🤟🏻

Johnny was never about race.
Kathy H June is in the video and passed not long after it was made. Johnny followed her several months later.
Trent Renzor was on record as saying that the song now belonged to Johnny Cash. Trent wrote it but he said Johnny Cash MADE it.
@Colin Harris ditto.
Not discounting the value Cash brings to this song but to say he owns this song borders on offensive to TR fans. This song IS Trent Reznor. Having said that, TR says he was touched by Cash’s version.
Some artists are transcendent... You know them when you hear them...

Your reaction is why I will always believe that music, art, books will always be the great equalizer of humanity. ♥️
R.I.P JOHNNY CASH 💔😥 THE MAN IN BLACK ❤ MUCH LOVE ✌
He had a way of making you feel his music and all the emotion in it for him
When you said "He sounds like he is going through something", all I could say was GURL! You don't even know.! lol
I've listened to cash for a long time, but this was a heavy one. I can tell by your reaction it got you too. You're a good guy with a lot of heart! All the best!!
The ONLY times Johnny Cash went to prison was to do concerts. He stayed overnight in jail a couple of times but he was never incarcerated to a prison.
Jonny actually never did prison time. Did some time in the county lockup but no "hard time." The closest he got to prison time was recording at Folsom
l love how all these black guys who are into hiphop are so receptive to this song. Just goes to show we're all the same at the root.
I’m black and love all types of music!
Race has nothing to do with good
Music!!
@@SS-sy6wf Who feels it, know's it
... are you the same way with HipHop
I'm white and love some hip hop. That doesn't mean I don't like Rock, Soul, R&B, Disco, Country and Pop. I like them all.
Today in our world we need to know that more than ever. 💖
Yes, it's definitely a Masterpiece!
One of the great story tellers. It was like he conveyed messages to you while singing but you didn’t even know you were being entertained.
Walk the Line is a great movie! Yes! Watch it!
Power to you i wish you peace within much love 💖
Thank you for choosing life. We need you. Stay safe and be well. Peace. ♥️
Most everything Johnny Cash sang, was deep. He put himself and went through alot of shit. Great man
His reaction was about as genuine as it gets. I'm always in awe of what Mr. Cash put into his version of this song, and it chokes me up the same way, it's nice to see people appreciate it.
He died shortly after this. His wife June died then in no time he was gone to
Gone to where? :P
TheCaptainKim not funny
I loved watching your reaction to this song. It was originally performed by Trent resnor from nine inch nails. But after hearing Jonny sing it. Trent gave it to him. He no longer took any credit or acknowledgment for it. What a respectful selfless thing for him to do. Such an honor, and beautiful tribute to one of the most iconic artists of all time.
This is such an emotional song....Everyone can relate in some aspects....
A real man! RIP.
I'm going to be honest a song has never make tears come out of my eyes until I heard this just now
Look up Johnny's life, he went through a lot and this song is the soundtrack of his life, imo. He passed a few months after his beautiful wife did.
It's about regret and his wishes that he had been a different person throughout his life that was nearing its end. And I bet you know a song or two from him but never knew it was him. You might enjoy "A Boy Named Sue"
True. But Johnny didn't write this song though.. It's a nine inch nails song (no hate, i love johnny's version way more)
That's everybody's first reaction at the very end...WOW.
Amazing everybody, including me, gets teary-eyed emotional right at that point where he pours out the wine glass.
And just like that he died after the song came out.
Curtis Blanton what was worse for me was June (his wife) died first before it came out: they show her face around the time he sings “everyone I love go away in the end” without knowing she would pass soon after. She died, this hits main screen time, I bawled like a child.
Even though someone else wrote the song he sang it like he was telling a life story deep deep
Bro, real men do cry! I cry everytime I see this JC video or hear this song ... *rip_JC
The Man In Black as he was known. One of the greatest Country Music Legends of all time.
If a song like this doesn’t move you, tears or not, I don’t care about that, you’re not human. With a song like this if you shed a tear you still retain your man card.
He recorded this one at age 72. He was also suffering from Parkinson's disease at this time.
I've been listening to Johnny Cash my whole life. It's well worth it to listen to more of his work
I wish I could hear this song for the first time again.
Johnny Cash The Man In Black and so many more, he’s a classic. That he performed at the level he did while being hopelessly addicted was miraculous
I hurt everytime I see a video of him doing this song and a big ole tear runs down my cheek. And dont worry a bit about my manhood, as I only care about my humanity.
charlesatty love that last sentence.
Welcome to a True Legend. That of Johnny Cash! I felt the same way you did judging your facial expressions. He was a true icon!
The video insert where he says, "You stay the hell away from me, you hear!" is from a "Columbo" TV episode where Johnny Cash's character is the suspect.
@Gus McCrae Thanks for that correction. I was going from old, misguided memory. :)
My dad never learned English, but he loved him some Johnny Cash.
Thank you for paying respect to the legendary Johnny Cash. God bless you.
This song was Johnny Cash's goodbye to the world
Johnny Cash = O.G. Beyond race, time, money, reputation, success, he did it in his own way. Truly an original.
This was his final song before his death. He knew it.
This is Jhonnys final good bye. I regret never getting to see him in concert.
Wow almost made me cry! Deep song
Grew up with parents who listened to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash and the Carter Family - it was constant. But this? This has always been my absolutely favourite song by him.
He died a year after this song came out. His wife died in May 2003. He Died in Sept 2003. He knew he was at the end of his life. Deep.
johnny cash has been around since the late 50s early 60s. a lot of his stuff is very rockabilly, which is a mix of rock n roll and country. hes had hits like "ring of fire" and "folsom prison blues" he sang for the blue collared life and was very outspoken. he was amazing.
Canicula correct every word!
You poor deprived young man😮. He had rough life but he was happy with his wife June. She passed not long after he released this
Gate Guard 1: "You hear that? its country music!"
Gate Guard 2: "CLOSE THE GATE"
Gate Guard 1: "Its Johnny Cash"
Gate Guard 2: "Open the gate a little bit"
Johnny Cash is the man and this song is powerful. Glad you enjoyed it.
If you want johnny cash there are his serious songs like "Ring of Fire", his more comedy tracks like "One piece at a time"
Then there are some a little in-between like "A Boy Named Sue"
Whenever I need a cry, I always listen to this song. I mean....it just....If they ever made a musical time capsule for 1000 years later, this would be in there. How have you not heard this before???
Try his “ gods gonna cut you down” video. You will dig all the people in it that he influenced
Thank you for your reaction to this song. I really never listened to it before. Watching you listen to it. I really heard it. It resonates for me as deep regret for things we cannot change. Thank you.
Johnny Cash more OG than any so called hip hop artist today
Fuggggin Aye 💯
It's not a comparison. Different style different time.
@ikdks Not just lock up. Anyone who grew up rough. You know what I mean.
That's bullshit
Nawwww
The measure of a person's life isn't the money they've acquired, but the lives they've touched.
That's a hardcore song man. Check out Johnny Cash "The Man Comes Around"
When his daughter heard it she said to him "it sounds like your saying goodbye " to which he replied "I am"
It's okay. I wasn't using my heart right now anyway.
It is so hard to hold the tears back listening Jonny Cash singing this song.
