I agree with several comments about not getting sufficient respect via time spent on HomeOS/HomePodOS or whatever they will morph the name into. Most of this presentation is clearly meant to focus on the updates to all of their OSs. Granted, that may be why they don’t give it a proper OS name - it allows them to ignore. Apple knows their ecosystem is magnetic: it sucks in users from others areas of the Apple universe and adds new sales. As such, spend the extra 5 minutes to highlight just a few awesome feature for the Home, coming out in the new SomethingOS.
I mean it’s pretty much complete at this point. Maybe some small quality of life improvements but it basically does everything you need it to do at this point. What else do you want?
I probably won’t use the hands-free unlock feature cause I’d be paranoid. Like is it the hands-free unlock feature or did I just leave the door unlocked the whole day? 😅
Siri is becoming much more intelligent. Controlling the smart home via voice is becoming increasingly impressive. If Siri can identify all accessories in the Home app and manage them with AI, we won't be limited to specific phrases anymore.
Yes being able to speak more naturally to control the smart home will be a big deal. Especially for my wife. She hates using Siri because it's hard to phrase things just right.
The electricity usage looks interesting can’t wait to use it to get a better look on how much power I’m using. (Hopefully it gets more stuff added on to it)
I was really hoping to see some of these enhancements for Homekit. Well, seems like we will have to wait longer :( 1. Pan and tilt controls and higher resolution support (2K atleast) for homekit security cameras (Aqara, Eufy, etc). About time! 2. Better representation of activity log data in terms of graphs, timeline, etc (eg. how Aqara app shows the data) 3. Using Apple TV state in automations. Eg. Perform some action If the Apple TV goes to sleep or wakes up.
Apple, please give us a way to set a different notification alert for a HomeKit Doorbell. I want to be able to differentiate a doorbell "Ding Dong" notification from all other alerts on my phone.
09:25 about "Hand-free unlock with UWB locks": this was confusing me at first since hands-free unlock with iPhone or Apple Watch was already the basis of Home Key, which was announced before and is not a new feature of iOS 18. But in fact, as you explained well in your separate YT short, the new feature provides an AUTOMATIC REMOTE UNLOCK when you come back home and you're still a few feet away from the door, using UWB. By comparison, hands-free unlock with Home Key used NFC not UWB and required swiping the iPhone or Apple Watch a few inches from the lock sensor. This is the exact same evolution as Car Key especially in BMWs, which first used NFC near the car door (BMW Digital Key) and now uses UWB at a distance (BMW Digital Key Plus).
So happy to finally see the unlock feature for home key compatible devices. Looking forward to try it. Thanks for sharing, I missed that part during the keynote docs.
Rookie question. Is it possible for Siri to announce notifications from Home App? Like if my aqara front door is unlocked, instead of getting notification. Can siri speak the notification on a HomePod or through phone? Thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks for watching! It’s the same reason they don’t support robot vacuums yet. Appliances, like robot vacuums, are not product categories within HomeKit. (don’t know why they haven’t added support). Since Matter now supports these appliances, hopefully Apple will update the Home app to also include them.
@@ShaneCreates Ok. Cool! Thanks for the reply. I think they would get a lot more people to join if they do so. The Robot vacuum support did get me excited in a weird way. LOL!
I’m torn on the uwb unlocking. Great convenience but is it too great a security risk? I’d feel safe with it in my neighborhood, but I can see some locations where this would be risky. I guess like all things everyone should assess the risk for themselves and decide whether to use the feature.
Yea, it looks like it’s a part of “express mode,” which can be turned off. I think UWB would be much more reliable and secure than using geolocation, like some locks do now. Six feet is pretty close and we know that UWB is very precise, which is good.
What I’ve been waiting for is more Siri or HomeKit control for the Apple TV. For example a way to control directional inputs by voice, or to simply resume what you were last watching. Or as another person mentioned indicating the state of the Apple TV. All of this has workarounds but they could be a lot simpler
I agree. Would love to see the Apple TV act more like other HomeKit accessories and give us more automation capabilities. Siri is decent already in this area though. In case you didn’t know, you can tell Siri on a HomePod (as long as it’s in the same room as the Apple TV) to pause the tv, resume the TV, open a specific app, etc.
Thanks for your coverage, as always! Do you think existing locks that support Home Key will work with the hands free unlock function, or will we need updated hardware for this?
Awesome video as always. I’m a bit concerned that AI wasn’t specifically shown working with Home. Everything that they showed SHOULD allow for easy and natural prompts, but something tells me that it’ll be a bit longer for Home.
they've finally fixed the one tap quick (butt) dial issue from before, from the recents / call history screen. now it opens the contact first, thankfully. favourites still continues to be one tap call.
Great summary of the changes. As for the keynote my biggest concern was if I can believe our data is really safe, seemed liked some major hand waving? Oh and thanks for the commercial on the Eve shades, need to check those out.
Valid concerns. It does seem like they are doing a lot to focus on and protect privacy. I guess we'll see if it's enough. You'll love the Eve shades btw! Thanks for watching!
I bought the Logitech door bell and several cameras and they suck on HomeKit . Refuse to stay connected and go completely off line when looked at individually, requiring a restart. I hate it but I think I and going to have to switch to the dark world in order to get something that actually works. I have an Apple TV HD as a hub as well as a Home Pod.
Thanks for watching Josh. I think there will be room control for the robot vacuums. At least it seems so based on the wording on the Apple Home website: "Start your robot vacuum as you leave for work or ask Siri to clean a specific room."
Just getting into the smart home world. Bought the Ecobee Premium, Nest doorbell, and several Nest video security indoor cameras, and 4 smart plugs. I believe all are compatible with Apple Home except my Nest products. I noticed the ones compatible with Apple use iCloud. Does it use a lot of GB in iCloud, any idea what I could expect to use in iCloud storage for these?
I missed your appraisal of the most important HomeOS update feature in my mind, the coming ability to choose the default hub. I run 7 AppleTV4Ks and 15 speakers in the household, the constant AppleAuto choosing of the most inappropriate hub is maddening!
would manufactures need to issue a whole new door lock that have UWB in them as well? or is the NFC on current homekey door locks enough to utilise the UWB in the iPhone?
Good question, and I'm not 100% certain the answer. I believe UWB is a part of the Home Key standard, so I think Home Key locks may already have the hardware needed. But again, I'm not totally sure. I'll definitely be looking more into this to find the answer to that question.
@@ShaneCreates I did a little digging and found people where discussing Aliro being the next stage for UWB locks. In regards to car manufacturers I believe Teslas and rivian new models have UWB door access. Very disappointed in the lack of significant HOME/homeKit/homeOS. updates. Let's pray more is revealed during the rest of the conference. Will you be getting the betas so you can see if there is anything else?
I’ve already installed the beta on some devices. I’ll certainly continue looking around to see if anything else jumps out in the week and next few months.
I am using IOS18 public beta. Just accidentally noticed, i could able to add wifi Matter accessories without matter controller (HP/HPM/ATV) connected to my home app for secondary home.. any idea? Aren’t these devices required to connect wifi matter devices any more from IOS18? (But it says we can only control the devices locally and a hub is required to control from outside)
The HomeKey Hands free unlock is the coolest feature. Would love to see a video using the various home key locks you have. I wonder if this requires special hardware on the lock or just a compatible Home hub. Will Aqara U50 support this?
The more I research this, the more I believe it will require new hardware. So I doubt any of the Home Key locks on the market will be able to support this. I'll cover this topic in more detail in today's live stream: th-cam.com/users/liveljlkZUNOERw
Thanks Shane. You found a couple things that I had not noticed so I appreciate it. One thing I was concerned about was the Siri improvements don’t look like they’re necessarily gonna work with HomePods. The HomePods are not very powerful machines and don’t have the chips that are required for the apple intelligence that was discussed. Hopefully I’m wrong. I use my HomePods to control my home all the time and want the Siri improvements to show up on those devices.
I'm assuming the Siri improvements will be across the whole ecosystem. They won't be able to do a lot of the "Apple Intelligence" features since they are speakers, but hopefully Siri will at least be more conversational and understand requests better. That would be a win for the smart home.
Great video and thank you for adding chapters! Do you think that we’ll need to buy new robot vacuums or will our existing ones, like for example my Roborock Q5, work right away? I was hoping for more HomeKit controls like you see in 3rd party apps. And being able to store device codes and save snapshots of configurations. Integration with my wall-mounted EV charging equipment would have been neat, if anything to monitor usage and recognize patterns. Otherwise the equipment app and car app pretty much tell you everything and let you control key aspects of each device.
Thanks for watching. This will mostly depend on the vacuum manufacturer. I believe Roborock told me at CES that all of their newer robot vacuums, like those released this year would get a Matter update. I doubt older vacuums more than a year or so will get the update. I believe Matter 1.3 added support for EV charging equipment, so maybe it’s something that we’ll eventually see. It will be interesting to see how, and if, Apple can can keep up with the Matter updates by bringing support to these new devices in the Home app and HomeKit.
Love the video and your content. I’m hoping you can help answer a question. Within the HomeKit app, when creating an automation, is there a way to have two conditions that need to be met for it to trigger an automation? For example, if X = on and Y = off, then z = on. Thank in advance for your help!!
Spatial AirPlay is very welcome. Love it. But they still don’t support lossless AirPlay? To get lossless to a hifi system requires either dongles or connecting either a Mac or an Apple TV (which can mean putting a TV in a room where one might not want dedicated screens.
Question: I have several Double Hug windows with Blinds that are 75" wide. Does Eve sell blinds at that width? I couldn't see that at their site or Amazon. Am I missing something?
You know, even though Apple did not have a specific HomeKit section in the keynote there was really a lot of nice additions that were scattered throughout coverage of the various platforms yesterday. Always more that we want (true of many Apple things), but overall this was not a horrible day for Home.
Thanks for a very succinct recap, Shane. Good to know what’s coming in the iOS and TVos upgrades. I think it’s significant that they’re going to give third-party apps greater control over the operating systems. 10:25 I appreciate that that you didn’t make us wade through a one hour video to get to the 10 minute fact based report. Onward!
Why my HomePod always asking “who’s is speaking?” If I don’t tell who’s speaking, it won’t perform the task. It’s random. Sometimes when I asked for the same Task, it just worked. Anyone know what’s happening?
Hey Shane, I actually have mixed feelings about the Apple event. In one hand, I love the direction they’re going with AI, but like many other people that uses HomeKit I’m really disappointed that we get are only minor but AI are just starting to open up new possibilities but we still have a long way to go.
Chamberland stopped supporting homekit, and all third party access to their products. Here is a video on a product that I'm using and what I recommend to others: th-cam.com/video/Sbvp-01dMLM/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the more-informative-than-dub-dub update, Shane. I get it - HomeKit is kind of Apples red-headed stepchild. We need to keep plugging along, celebrating the little wins. Maybe one of these days, Tim Crook will wake up and realize how many of us there are out here running our homes from HomeKit… In the meantime, you and a handful of other YT folks keep them honest.
Great update, thanks Shane. Disappointed! It feels like Apple only give token support to Home. They throw a few small cookies our way but nothing much to get excited about.
great review. I also watched the live event and was specifically looking for what the AI would do for home kit but it was not referenced. For me, having SIRI being able to have a natural conversation in the way I can with my ChatGPPT 4o on my iPhone would be amazing. If this could then enable me to better control my devices via HomeKit, or to set up programmes without the need to set up automations on my phone, ie it does it for me, then this would be game changing. I see AI as being the great equaliser, bringing the more advanced features of IOS and other applications to the masses, that previously would not have used them because they were unsure how to use them - ie reducing the geek level. I hope AI is coming to the speakers but I could also imagine that apple use this as an opportunity to release a new speaker that you have to buy first to get AI. I have a iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I was disappointed to see that I cannot get AI in IOS 18 as they are only making it available on 15. cheers John
Thanks for the comment. I agree, Siri becoming more conversational would be a huge improvement for the smart home. Unfortunately, they didn’t showcase this in the keynote. I assume that Siri being more natural, personal, contextual, and allowing you to speak more naturally will be reflected across the ecosystem to include HomePods. I know this would make my wife happy especially. It’s hard to remember the correct names of all my smart home devices and scenes.
Nothing means there is no change whatsoever from a previous version. Here we have quite a few small changes and new features. Nothing groundbreaking but still welcome changes, and a change nullifies the “nothing’s changed” argument
The guy that removed/disabled the sensors from their line of vehicles putting in danger customers that were using that undoubtedly helpful feature is worry about security now?

Not sure yet, will have to look into that more.
Are you still doing anything with the vision pro?
Yes I use it some. Not every day. But I do still use it. I actually watched the WWDC keynote on the Vision Pro 😃
Nice Melin!
Thank you for the video.
This product looks amazing! I can't wait to buy one and use it at home. Wow!😍😍
Are you a bot?
Thanks for the more-informative-than-dub-dub update, Shane. I get it - HomeKit is kind of Apples red-headed stepchild. We need to keep plugging along, celebrating the little wins. Maybe one of these days, Tim Crook will wake up and realize how many of us there are out here running our homes from HomeKit… In the meantime, you and a handful of other YT folks keep them honest.
7:59 what did you use to mount the iPad to the wall? Do you have a video about it?
Yep here it is: th-cam.com/video/NvRzNE5PdwA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5NyLqBv3oUC9gUWq
Cool. And what is the app on the iPad ?
@@RegisTremblayLefrancois Controller for HomeKit (floorplan feature). Recent video on the feature here: th-cam.com/video/DqQJ-czCBAQ/w-d-xo.html
I take back what I said. You explained a lot of what I wanted to hear. 🎉
can i pay shipping and you send the devices you no longer use? i was horribly injured at work and can no longer work....long story...
Thanks for breaking this down!
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
Disappointed that still the cameras can be seen at only 1080p
Looks like no AI on HomePods...
Keep it up Shane.💪🏾
would rather have the ability to control/limit access to family members in the Apple Home app instead of guest control.
AND THE BIG QUESTION IS? Has HomeKit secure video been increased from the pathetically low 1080p??
Nope
Great update, thanks Shane. Disappointed! It feels like Apple only give token support to Home. They throw a few small cookies our way but nothing much to get excited about.
Thanks for watching. Yea it’s been a few years since we’ve gotten any real significant HomeKit updates from one of these Apple Events.
Great video
Thanks for the video Shane. Still looking for an Apple device to replace the Google Nest Hub Max on my kitchen counter. Come on Apple…
Same!! We need an Apple Home Hub Display!
Thank you 🖖
Still no adaptive lighting over matter 😢
That is a Matter thing, not HomeKit. Matter does not support adaptive lighting still, as far as I’m aware.
Would love it if they implement soft on/off. So lights fade on to the programmed level and fade off. Simple but nobody is thinking about it.
I think this is a manufacturer thing… some HomeKit lights do this by default.
I would like to be able to set it in HomeKit.
Wish they would add 4k to HKSV
Hell I'd even settle for 2k...
It never detects when every family member has left the house. Makes Homekit rather useless, as my cameras never turn on when nobody is home.
Nice hat
I bet you’re going to need to buy a new lock with uwb chip inside. Which none exists yet.
Why was I expecting an AI-powered automations builder?
If they really improve Siri, then all home users, including significant others, will benefit. That's the one complaint I get most often. Let's hope
Indeed… same here. Siri getting more conversational would greatly improve the experience among family members in my house.
great review.
So to sum it all up : N O T H I N G 😢
Nothing means there is no change whatsoever from a previous version. Here we have quite a few small changes and new features. Nothing groundbreaking but still welcome changes, and a change nullifies the “nothing’s changed” argument
Apple’s AI got a pretty strong negative reaction from Elon Musk related to security. Any thoughts on this?
The guy that removed/disabled the sensors from their line of vehicles putting in danger customers that were using that undoubtedly helpful feature is worry about security now?
Thumbnail. WVDC, VWDC or VVVDC? 😂
Home automation is the future and Apple neglegt it bigly. Its so wierd.
Nothing new about CarPlay 😢
th-cam.com/video/PLf44BXd0SE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aR7vhN5BjqSG7xQ8
CarPlay 3 is on the way. Introduced in iOS 16
Id be happy if they just worked halfway with matter motion sensors. Its an unmitigated disaster. Shame on Apple
