Conditional statements in Home App automations. Also access to other "under the hood" variables for automations. Home Control and Home+ apps both offer these. Apple's Home App should too. Also in Home App, ability to search for automations and to group automations in folders.
This. I end up naming my automations to mimicking the presence of folders and have them grouped together in the list. But Home+ works way better. I’ve been using the iOS 18 developer beta being able to select my preferred home hub has been one of the best upgrade features to my Apple home in a long time. This has made a huge difference in speed and overall reliability in my smart home. I have the latest gen Apple TV 4K hardwired to my router and sits between two HomePod minis as a stereo pair that run off wifi (obviously). Apple always chose a HomePod mini as the primary hub. Not on Apple on the front end, but would love the ability to control my Ring Alarm and camera setup within HomeKit. Feel like this could be pretty easy for Amazon (Ring) to enable with a firmware update to bring Matter to the platform and make it HomeKit compatible.
This one is from a manufacturers standpoint but I really desire Matter support for Garage Door motors. Come on Chamberlain, listen to us! And Matter controlled 6 speed DC motor ceiling fans with full color and color temperature LED support. I have this in Homebridge with a Tuya compatible fan now but I would spend my money to get the real McCoy with Matter!

Agree with all those Shane. My requests are for shortcuts. 1) I’d like to be able to enable and disable automations from a shortcut (like a vacation mode that shuts off certain automations that there’s no need for when I’m away). And 2) I’d like be able to set parameters of devices programmatically, like I can currently get the brightness of a dimmer, but I can’t then adjust that and set it within the automation.

Awesome video as always, Shane! I think pretty much everything you mentioned would be a great start for us HomeKit users. We’re due for more icons and custom messages through our HomePods using automations, on top of all the new features coming with iOS 18.
Good thoughts. Appreciate the info. Quick opinion, need a motion sensor for matter lights in main room. Current recommendations for a sensor to automate my living room lights? Nanoleaf is my current light ecosystem.
Disability access - my mom is hard of hearing and never hears her phone ring and so I can never get a hold of her. She is elderly and I need to be able to check on her. Make lights flash while the phone rings.
+1 on Camera resolution and Pan/Tilt ; it is ridiculous in 2024 that these are no supported. Good suggestion on icons , should be a simple improvement.
Hi Shane, I am also pleased with these developments, there is one more that perhaps more people would like to see. I can open and close the garage door in CarPlay. This is great, but, (probably many others around the world) I have to drive into the yard first and then into the garage, so there is a gate. CarPlay only ever offers one of these, it would be useful if it could display both.
Energy monitoring is long overdue, don’t care about the robot vacuums personally (last time I had one was 15 years ago and it would scoot backwards and get stuck in my dorm 😂)
Being able to turn off alarms when I'm away from home. You can control every other device from the app when you're away, why not alarms on my HomePod minis?
One other good thing they’ve added in iOS 18 thru the Convert to Shortcut feature is the ability to apply more complex automations with “Any” or “All” which function like And/Or. you aren’t limited to one assessor state or having to do a ton of nested IF statements that get messy and buggy. I’d like to be able to use the state of an Apple TV or HomePods as an automation trigger. Ability to have security accessories in an automation without having to use a dummy switch. Slight customization to the UI where the slider could just be visible rather than have to click into it to adjust a light setting. I also wouldn’t mind if the “chip cards” across the top were rooms instead of accessory types. I know they aren’t going to go full blown Home Assistant customizable, but just a bit more than current state. @shane - it would definitely be nice to see your approach to Home Assistant recently and how you’re using it. Most resources on TH-cam are from people who just want to use Home Assistant for everything and it feels like there is a content gap for people who just want to use it to integrate more devices into HomeKit. Just a thought…thanks as always for the content!
all the suggested features you said are all definitely needed... but more icons would be great the app is dull and requires reading the accessory name to see what you are controlling custom icons or more icons would make the app fantastic !
Can you execute location-based automations for guests? I big want for me was to be able to set a scene when my cleaners arrive, and set the leave home scene when they exit.
Weather and sun position built in to HomeKit such that we can trigger shades, notifications, etc based on weather or sun position. Also, some sort of support for DIY home alarms using multiple manufacturers components would be amazing. Apple Intelligence on HomePods/Apple TVs would be amazing.
The Guest OS its half baked. You can’t create profiles for guests. I’ll never give full access to my kids. To me it’s very simple, profiles. Add a user to that profile and it’s done.
As well as all the other great suggestions, would just like to see a complete overhaul of the automation system and options in general, more like with shortcuts, Maybe an ‘advanced’ mode like Home Assistants automation engine. I can’t be bothered to go into detail, if you know you know. I’m constantly finding things I can’t do (turn off lights if no nothing for X minutes).
Love your videos, have been watching you for a few years! But I live in a multi family in the northeast(Boston) that’s old… think you could do a video on automation or suggest some setups that would work best for this scenario? Right now I am under utilizing HomeKit as just light control and smart switches… I should be doing more!
Silly and small but I’d like to be able to customize what automations show on my appletv like we can on iPhone and iPad. I love my lighting schedules and they run flawlessly so no need to show on the screen. I really have one I want to show and that is my “TV Watching” one.
There is currently security history for when doors open and close, but I would love to see a history for other things like lights and sensors. I currently have to run automations to track these things.
It would be cool if Siri told via the Hompods that it's time to air or something like that! Unfortunately, it currently only works via light, message on the iPhone or music, which I personally find really pointless. Automations would be so much better if Siri simply announces it on the HomePods and everyone in the house knows what to do. I'm definitely curious to see what else HomeKit brings with it.
Well thank you for the encouraging news re Apple's 'new'/improved? re-focus on HomeKit. I know they've been really focused on the direct revenue generating streaming services products but c'mon as an Apple ecosystem loyalist don't forget the Home!
I think the most important thing is a very robust automation system, something like home assistant where basically I can automate whatever I want however I want
Backup and restore. LOGS. What was triggered, when, and why, and did the automation fire, or why not? Is device X connected or not? Logs could make a huge difference in troubleshooting. And how about the ability to trigger manufacturer-specific lighting modes, like the fancy modes for the LED strips that are only available in the manufacturer's app instead of Home?
Hi Shane, I am moving into a new condo that isn’t built yet. It will be finished in the spring. I am trying to get the developer to pre-wire for surroundsound and also C6 wire throughout my unit. Is it necessary or do you recommend hardwiring security cameras also I asked you a few days ago what you recommend for motorized window shades, which you told me if price wasn’t an issue go with Luton, which I agree. What about light switches and home security I do want it all to be tied into Apple home. Waiting for your recommendations and any other comments you might add to that.
Biggest thing for me would be to continue a shortcut when an accessory fails. I have a couple accessories that are not super reliable. If one fails, the entire shortcut dies. I wish it could just notify me and keep going
Something really stupid about using smart locks on Euro Mortise locks is that Apple Home can not distinguish between "Unlock" and "Open" (but Matter 1.2 does...). You can use Siri, automations and Home App only to lock but if you want to unlock without opening, you must lean on the specific app
I think it would be awesome. If the Apple Home app would allow automation options like in the Aqara app. I think Aqara allows for some simple automations that you would have to create an apple shortcuts to do the same thing. for example, if this light is on, wait 15 minutes then turn off. That's very easy to do in the Aqara app but I think you need to use Apple shortcuts to get the same results and for those who aren't familiar with the Shortcuts app, that could be difficult to create
HKSV recording either during the night when we are home OR 24/7 recording when everyone is away from the house. How on earth is this basic feature not available yet?!
Being able to chose which temperature sensor is reported. My lounge has two eve thermo radiator valves and an external temperature/humidity sensor, so I usually get a range of temperatures quoted by Siri. Also the ability to get power consumption from sockets which are capable of reporting it
i have an apartment and have 13 bulbs i’m managing… it’s hard to keep track off not gonna lie. Anyways, being in a house w kids, how do you manage all of your lights and want if someone only like 1 bulb on? sounds like a dumb question, but it gets messy whenever i have solo actions for 13 lights.
Better compatibility with mmW occupancy sensors. Right now automation off-triggers are set relative to the time occupancy is detected (which is fine for PIR), rather than to the time absence is flagged.
That’s great! My Apple TV doesn’t work with Thread devices for whatever reason… if that’s selected as home hub, I need to turn it off in order to force another one to be the hub.
Turn off the light on the HomePod while playing music. I sleep with rain sounds but the HomePod lighting drives me nuts. ( not sure if this exist ) but being able to dim specific lights that are already on with a smart switch like the inovali .
I'd like to use current weather information in automation. I want to turn my mood lights on whenever the sun is hidden behind clouds. But I think it's a tall ask given that even the Apple Watch doesn't remember the weather forecast after you walk away from the phone for 15 min.
Long way to go still. E.g. Zigbee support would be great. Finding HomeKit, Matter (particularly over Thread) devices is difficult, and it’s annoying to have to deploy extra hubs / bridges to support these protocols.
hmm i did 2 weeks ago udating my ipad air 2 to ios18 (beta) i had heard that Apple should support power measuring (outlets) i have tried with Icore and Fibaro zwave outlets (with Thinka) but it does only on/off (klik klak) not power measuring yet.
Hi Shane, Nice job by the way. I really really want an automation system like flows and advanced flows from Homey. Apple already have personal automation that is like flows but doesn't allow us to use it on home automations, and of course for more pro users they can build like advanced flows provably on the Mac or on iCloud because build a mobile UI is hard. Another thing is be able of control better the Apple TV with automations like turn on and off, volume etc. Have more controls on the Apple TV like the new Google Stream box will have, why I cannot do nothing on the Apple TV.
What’s funny is….we use to be able to dedicate a hub. It was iOS 14 or around there. Hilarious by took it away and then bringing it back as a new feature 😂
I am wondering if I am only one noticing this.....Switch Bot Curtains and Blind Tilts connecting them via matter to Homekit. Seems like have to have apple hubs on 2.4g wifi to connect and then once they are added to homekit, switching Apple TV back to 5g for video streaming, those 2.4g devices become unresponsive. Wondering if this is a TVOS issue or 2.4 device issue. Thankfully, having HomePod mini on 2.4 and using that as a hub addresses that issue. Wonder if that is why Apple went to this ability to choose which hub to use. idk
Someone also commented that they want fade-on/off for lights. I too wish they had fade-on-off for lights. Even if its a stock 2 sec fade, that would be great. And not difficult to implement IMHO. Being able to control the duration of the fade would be awesome but not critical. Are you listening Apple?
Apple, if you listen: 2 years ago lights would go out if you chose "off after # minutes" in the automations. Even though the light was on before the automation was activated. now the light only goes out if the light was already off before the automation was triggered. That is not correct in my opinion.
This might not be so much a smart home feature but more for the Apple TV. I’d love the ability to download movies or tv series in apps like Netflix or Disney+. My ISP isn’t the best but if I could download the movie or sitcom the family is watching we won’t have to wait for it to load and be stopped halfway through the movie/show. 128 Gb is plenty of space to do this with. Maybe next gen Apple TV’s will have this feature with more space like 256-512 Gb.
I'm a bit behind on your videos, so maybe someone has already pointed this out, but you mentioned you wanted at least 2K resolution support for cameras. It already does support that as 2K is 1080p. Only difference being that instead of 1920x1080, 2k is 2048x1080. Supposedly 2560x1440 is "technically" considered 2K also, so maybe that's what you meant. The whole renaming of resolutions is ridiculous. It use to be 480, 540, 720, 1080. And then suddenly it went to 4K, 8K, 12K, etc. Should have just done 480, 540, 720, 1080, 1440, 2160. But no, for some reason they switched from the vertical to the horizontal. If anything, they could have at least called 1080 1K, 1440 1.5K, and 2160 2K. Would have made a lot more sense and easier for the consumer to understand. Rant time: It's kind of like how everything on your computer is bytes. Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes, Terabytes, Petabytes (we all have this, right?). This goes for RAM, VRAM, Hard Drive and any removable media sizes. But nope, when we transfer data over the internet or over wifi, screw those terms that already make sense to us and let's make it bits instead of bytes. Because it sounds so much cooler to say you have Gigabit internet instead of 128 Megabyte - which is the exact same thing. Thanks for reading. I feel much better now. ;)
Anyone know if viewing your HomeKit cameras in Control Center was ever a thing? Swiping down into it, and clicking a camera icon that would quickly pull up a live stream? I could have sworn I had seen this feature a long time ago but I’m not sure. Hopefully we can in iOS18.
I would like the ability to mute HomeKit cameras when streaming. I have interior cameras that I want to only stream and record video and not audio. You can make it only record video but streaming doesn’t give you the option to mute the mic
I would like Siri on my HomePods that actually works every time without fail, and Siri feature parity across all devices that use it (I.e. Siri can do exactly the same things, no matter which device it gets invoked on). I’d also like to be able to call out to my HomePods while using my phone and have them listen and not my phone.
Better Apple TV controls. All you can do is play a song. I want to turn on or off, launch apps, pull up cameras, run automations, right now it’s terrible. I have the aquqrq fp2 and I would like it to turn on the Apple TV when I sit on the couch
Not really an Apple Home feature but does tie in…. We are a family of 7… HomeKit allows 7+ residents, however if you utilize Apple One Family Share feature (music/storage/Tv) you are limited to 6 family Members. I get it that some would run wild and add family friends to their Apple One but you should have the ability to keep both technologies available for all members of your household
I would like to have a new Apple thread border router. Like a Wi-Fi modem/router or an upgraded Apple HomePod with better longevity once support ends (eg. audio out/bluetooth pairing support).
I would like Siri on my HomePods that actually works every time without fail, and Siri feature parity across all devices that use it. I’d also like to be able to call out to my HomePods while using my phone and have them listen and not my phone. I’m constantly talking to my HomePods to turn off the lights, and Siri on my phone or watch says “which room?”

(Finally, I suspect that voice recognition is heavily skewed to work with male voices cause my partner has way more issues triggering Siri correctly than I have)
Yes to custom notifications with Siri. No to requiring an Apple Music subscription to playing a custom sound.
Awesome video as always, Shane! I think pretty much everything you mentioned would be a great start for us HomeKit users. We’re due for more icons and custom messages through our HomePods using automations, on top of all the new features coming with iOS 18.
HomeKey for my adult children who live nearby. Is that coming with "Guest Access"?
I hope so!
Hi Shane,
I am also pleased with these developments, there is one more that perhaps more people would like to see. I can open and close the garage door in CarPlay. This is great, but, (probably many others around the world) I have to drive into the yard first and then into the garage, so there is a gate. CarPlay only ever offers one of these, it would be useful if it could display both.
Looks like iOS 18 might be to the 1.3 Matter standard since Apple got certified for this recently according to the CSA certification listings
Hi Shane, Adaptive lighting is working on Beta's and it works well
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing!
Primary hubs will be a huge game changer, but GIVE ME MY VACUUM AND MOP, APPLE! Please!!!
I've got a big house, so I'd love to see an increase in the number of allowed scenes and automations.
Thanks for the comment. Great points.
I will certainly share my Home Assistant journey and how I'm using it with HomeKit in the near future. 😃
@@ShaneCreatesyes please. Very much needed addition to your brilliant videos series
all the suggested features you said are all definitely needed... but more icons would be great the app is dull and requires reading the accessory name to see what you are controlling custom icons or more icons would make the app fantastic !
Can you execute location-based automations for guests? I big want for me was to be able to set a scene when my cleaners arrive, and set the leave home scene when they exit.
It will be interesting to see how guests are handled in automations.
Thank god for choosing the Hub!
Better sorting/filtering and folder structure for automations, that would be helpfull!
Hi Shane,
I am moving into a new condo that isn’t built yet.
I would love to compatibility expands since HomeKit products are so freaking hard to find and generally are too expensive.
Apple would do good to put you on their team. 😊.
4K Video Support in HKSV would be my main request
How about using the new genmoji for the icons?
I think it would be awesome. If the Apple Home app would allow automation options like in the Aqara app. I think Aqara allows for some simple automations that you would have to create an apple shortcuts to do the same thing. for example, if this light is on, wait 15 minutes then turn off. That's very easy to do in the Aqara app but I think you need to use Apple shortcuts to get the same results and for those who aren't familiar with the Shortcuts app, that could be difficult to create
Nice video Shane with lots of exciting updates coming! I agree with your additional request too!
Thanks for watching!
Also the ability to get power consumption from sockets which are capable of reporting it
Imagine the pan and tilt will come to HomeKit. Probably just waiting until the new robotic screen/speaker thing comes.
Do you have a list on your website of products that do adaptive lighting?
Does it control eufy cameras, doorbell door lock?
We desperate me need a different sound for a doorbell notification in the home app even better make it call the phone
i have an apartment and have 13 bulbs i’m managing… it’s hard to keep track off not gonna lie.
Oh and another one for people outside the US: there are more states than open and closed for windows. In the rest of the world you can tilt windows.
Hi Shane,
Nice job by the way.
Good suggestions. Thank you!
Yea we have been waiting for vacuum HomeKit enabled devices for a long time , they reason why I have not purchased a robot vac! Soon soon
I think robot vacuum support is for HomeKit, not Matter, and support for Matter 1.2-1.3 will be quietly announced on Apple Keynote
A randomised holiday/vacation mode for a group of lights
Weather station, especially rain gauge support
I feel much better now. ;)
I see on Support that I can use my iPad as a hub but I can’t seem to get that set up. Is that wrong? Or has it changed?
You use to be able to have iPad as a hub but Apple got rid of that feature few updates back. Bc iPad is mobile.
Add a pair of HomePod minis to HomePods/AppleTV for 4 speaker surround.
Love the child access idea!
State variables on devices and rooms/areas so automations can do different things in different situations set by other automations!
How is there still not a fade on time or scene builder
Why is it important to choose the homekit hub? What are the pros and cons?
I gave a few examples at 2:25
Not really an Apple Home feature but does tie in….
