      Agree it's a timeless and beautiful design - but that exhaust note, at least in the video, sounds absolutely flaccid - like a nasty wet fart. OK that is a little hyperbolic, the exhaust would be acceptable in a sports sedan - and maybe it sounds better in person - but for a supercar it's just not up to par. Then there is the suspension which is apparently tuned for a super smooth quarter mile track. Maybe they'll sort some of this stuff out in coming years and the car will become the beloved classic the design deserves.

    I own one. Absolutely love it! Best car I have owned. Better than Ferraris I owned and 991.2 GT3. Love the accessibility and comfort, I would take this and drive straight to the south of France. The 8th gear is an overdrive. The GT mode in combo with the ‘soft suspension’ button gives a really soft comfortable ride. It breaths like a Lotus, and much softer than a 458 Italia of GT3. Then you can turn it to sport and it will bring the car to life. It’s so fast! This is a car I long to driving it! And best feature…the turbos that you hear when accelerating, absolutely great experience!

    • @coolguy_2997
      @coolguy_2997 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Correct. It’s very a very strange opinion on the suspension , since other reviews, including top gear, on B roads say that the car is very supple especially compared to other cars in its class. They just can’t lie all, it’s impossible, the US reviews also call it very comfortable. Maybe it’s just a case with this exact car, something is wrong here.

    • @julianevans9548
      @julianevans9548 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I wondered if there could be something wrong with the suspension on this example.
      Because all of the magazines compliment the ride. Are they talking garbage? I'm not ruling that out, but it seems more than a little odd.
      CAR: 'A supple ride'
      Car and Driver: 'ride is reasonably compliant with the adaptive suspension in its most comfortable mode; it soaks up bumps well enough to consider driving it daily or taking it on a road trip'
      Autoexpress: 'a ride quality that, in its softest of three settings, is really very forgiving. It allows the car to flow with the road, rather than hop from one crest to the next'
      Top Gear: 'light on its feet, moves gracefully and easily over rough roads' and 'the ride is, well, wonderful'
      EVO: 'The ride quality in the default ‘GT’ mode is very good at isolating the occupants from the worst of British roads'.

    Your observation on the ride quality (or lack of it) is the thing that strikes me most about this review. When Harry Metcalf tested the MC20 he said that in GT mode it rode beautifully and you can see this on his review as the camera remains stable throughout, even on his famous stretches of poor road. This leads me to suspect there must be something wrong with the specific car you tested as Harry makes no reference whatsoever to poor ride quality in any part of his review. Thoughts?

      Maserati has a very bad reputation for reliability and overall build quality. But if on top of that they can't put their £250.000 supercar together right, straight out of the factory, that's another major concern. One more actual reason not to get this car.

    Everyone likes different things and I respect that, however the time I have spent in an MC20 was mega and I loved it. In GT mode, for example, I found it compliant and easy, certainly not fidgety and difficult. The majority of road testers love it and they are a critical bunch usually. The one thing I did find difficuly to adjust to was the lack of engine breaking which is a trait of the v6 and meant it requires more braking than many other high end cars that I have driven. But I got used to it. I think these will setlle around the £135k mark and that will make them mega value. The options are silly expensive - but so are Ferrari and Lambo options - and so waiting for them to settle and picking one up with £50k of options means that someone else did you a favour.

      I recommend that you learn how to use a comma properly and learn the difference between "braking" and "breaking". A lack of engine braking isn't a trait of V6 engines, F1 cars have V6 engines. Engine braking is more influenced by the compression ratio, the layout is not relevant. By all accounts the MC20 has fantastic braking overall with no critique of the engine braking by anyone who has actually driven the car.

    I've had Maseratis on and off for 40 years. Now, admittedly they've been mainly Quattroporte, with a few Ghiblis and a storming Bora for good measure.
    I like Masertis - a lot; and two months ago, I had a loan of an MC20 for a long weekend. That engine is undoubtedly one of the best powerplants I've come across in a very long time. The transmission was also very good and the cabin a nice place to be. The car looks amazing, but that ride! Even on the excellent surface of the M5 I might as well have been driving on cobbles! I even went so far as to bring the car back to Yorkshire on a trailer behind my faithful old 1978 Jeep Golden Eagle. Such a pity from a truly great manufacturer.

    I've just done 2500 miles in one and don't recognise those comments on the ride quality. The only comment I'd make is that the tyre sidewalls feel stiff and tyres harder, less grippier than say a PS4S, which I will be changing to.
    (The good thing about costly options is they are optional!)

    • @jamesmay1322
      @jamesmay1322 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just goes to show how wrong perception can be. Tyre reviews have tested both Bridgestones and Michelins and the Bridgestones are objectively quicker around both a wet and dry track, (though to be fair in the dry it's marginal - anything but in the wet though) and that's only possible if you have more, not less, grip. th-cam.com/video/t10y-87oiD4/w-d-xo.html The Bridgestones do have a stiffer side wall though.

    • @no66pdk4
      @no66pdk4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesmay1322 Depends on context too. eg Pirellis have lots of grip on a lap but are not very good when cold. Normal road driving at 70% the Bridgestones don't feel like they have the grip of Michelins. I've got enough miles on all of them to know what feels good and what doesn't. I did test drive the MC20 in the wet, not since, and agree they had lots of grip then.

    • @jamesmay1322
      @jamesmay1322 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@no66pdk4 But you're still only making a subjective assesment. You don't actually KNOW they're worse, they just FEEL worse. That's not the same thing at all. But granted tyres are as much about confidence as objective performance so if you feel the Michelins give you that then it's the better tyre for you. At the end of the day that's all that counts.
      My own personal experience (granted on a far less powerful car and different sizes) is compared to the Goodyear F1 Supersports I had to replace (due to a puncture and lack of availablity not due to them being worn) with the Bridgestones, the Bridgestones oddly feel more compliant and less firm ride wise, yet turn in a touch more quickly and feel more like they're connecting to the road rather than rolling "over" it (if that makes any sense).

    When Maserati showed the mule of MC20 I thought it was a mess. Then they showed the real car, and it was drop-dead gorgeous. And then I saw one in the flesh when I did a walkaround 'review' of it. My God I love the thing even in the rather sombre shade of Nero Enigma. And I actually quite like the interior. To me it feels like a much better built than any previous Maserati (though my experience was only the GranTurismo S).
    About the weight, yes Maserati claimed it's light because 'all of the carbon'. Yeaaaaa... but the carbon on the door was forged carbon. Which is not that light. And the door itself is pretty heavy. So I'm not surprised when EVO quoted a 1700kg weight figure for the MC20.
    I'd go for Rosso Vincente, Giallo Genio or Blu Infinito if I were to buy one. Was thinking about FuoriSerie colour like Hyper Green or Blu Corse but the price was horrifying. Not that I can ever buy one, though. Can't even afford BBR's 1/64 model of this.

      It’s not because of forged carbon is wrong, Maserati explained to EVO that they had to make the monocoque excessively rigid and that massive since the full EV version of the mc20 is coming using the 500kg battery pack, so the body should be fine carrying it without flexes and safety wise. The structure for ICE and EV variants is the same so it came that heavy

    Great review James I'm not surprised by your review. I was highly underwhelmed when this was launched as it just didn't look special enough in any way ,the colours ,the depth of the paintwork the quality of the wheels etc etc. Even when MR JWW did the launch with all of those historic Maserati customers flying in to see it it didn't look amazing enough. When Karl Hartley had one of the first on the country it just looked ordinary and they should have been able to get better fuel consumption out of a V6 . Luckily the gran turismo looks amazing and I'd love a petrol one of those as even the interior looks special.
