Just let it sink and test the bike. Stay calm and focussed. Don't get too excited. You could be disappointed when the first issues appear. I can already say one thing for sure after testing it. It is not the best bike in the world. Not even close! Hit the brakes and let things pan out.

@GCTO239 I have a 1987 gsxr1100h! Owned her 22 years! Unfortunately I have a bad back and putting on weight! Hence the crf1100! I sourced a 1 owner, 2900 miles, minter! Red/black! So far I've put 1 kid through college at denali and altrider and touratech!! She has gone from stock to looking the part! Mitas e07 plus! Bit overkill as I doubt she will go offroad! Too heavy! All these big adventure bikes are, with my skill level! That said, they are great touring bikes!

As a R1300GS Triple back owner in the UK I watched from start to finish with interest. My bike is approaching 4k miles and has suffered what I consider premature rear brake pad wear at 3.5k miles, a stretched rider seat cover due to be replaced under warranty, and also the well publicised starter relay recall. A stunning motorcycle to ride with huge levels of performance, the looks have really grown on me now, so you were spot on there.

Damn,$31,000 for a bike? At that price point, it shouldn’t need anything to be completely ready to tackle anything you could dream of throwing at it. $31k and you still need luggage. And for the Rhodes scholars coming with the comments “don’t watch it if you can’t afford it.” I’m here to support the channel whether it’s something I’d ride or not. If you want to spend $30k on a bike, do it. I’d spend 15k on an Africa twin or something similar, and buy a hot tub for my house with the rest, before I bought this thing.

What is everyone on about with the reaction to the price? In this free market capitalist society virtually everything we consume has offerings ranging from dirt cheap to outrageously expensive. It's all relative to one's perception of value or enjoyment etc. Some people think a Big Mac is expensive while others don't bat an eyelash at a 200 dollar wagyu steak. Or a high priced Swiss watch compared with a nice down and dirty yet nice quartz watch. Or a cheap 200 smart phone vs a 1,500 Apple phone. BMW will sell loads of the new GS and the price is somewhat irrelevant. Just another offering in the motorcycle market. To BMWs credit they have created a product history with the GS of near legendary status. The price? "It is what it is". I'll take 2,,, hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, but extra mayo. 😊 I just buy what I want. No need to justify or validate or rationalize the price. 😉

Hello from the arctic circle in Northern Norway! So incredibly cool that you are buying a BMW R1300GS!!!! I can't wait until you start testing the bike on your channel!!!! I'm sure you'll get a lot of viewers on your channel now, and it's well deserved!!!! I like this honest test of various bikes, and I have followed you for quite some time. The choice of black was perfect in my eyes, but you must get the side panel GS black too! Then it will be perfect! And you are most welcome to come and experience Norway by bike! Europe is just a short flight away! July-Aug are the best months to come here! Got lots of good tips for you!

    For shorter riders:
Probably not your first priority but, since you ordered the 1300 with the adaptive ride height I feel compelled to mention something that I have discovered after studying the owner's manual in detail on the subject. (For context, I currently own a low ride height model 2019 GSA and have an R1300GS with adaptive ride height on order).
Where the R1250GS/A allows for the rider to set the ride height to its lowest setting (and have it stay there at all times while riding) regardless of the riding mode chosen, the R1300GS manual (USA version) states that one can set the adaptive ride height to be at the minimum at all times BUT, that this can only be configured when in the ENDURO and ENDURO PRO modes. This begs the question, why the restriction to these two riding modes and what are the factors to consider if, being the shorter inseam rider that I am, I want to set the minimum height at all times for street use?
In reading the R1300GS owners manual it seems to state that the ENDURO and ENDURO pro modes can be customized by the rider to change the rider aid settings (ABS, linked brake force distribution, and ASC) to those that one would likely want to use on-road. (That is, having done this in order to get the adaptive ride height to stay at the minimum height at all the times.) There is some ambiguity however in the verbage of the owner manual pages as to whether the result of custom configuring the settings of either of the ENDURO modes to mimic say, ROAD or DYNAMIC mode, actually guarantees that none of the rider aids might not still be (internally at least) set for the bike to behave as if for off-road use.
For shorter, fairly lightweight people like myself, who like to experiment with lower ride heights (for reasons of both inseam challenge when stopping and, for the sporting character that a bike that sits a bit lower in its stance sometimes offers) I'd like to know what happens on paved roads when you configure the bike to remain at the minimum height at all times albeit, though it appears one will have to customize one of the ENDURO ride modes in order to do it.
As a light rider who does not compress the average suspension much, I often find that I can get away with a lot less preload/ride height on even moderately taller bikes without having ground clearance issues or bottoming out the suspension, even in spirited canyon riding. I intend to use my R1300 for a lot of sport riding (much as I do my current 1250). I cannot help but wonder why BMW felt compelled to require the use of the ENDURO ride modes in order to be able to set the ride height to remain at its minimum at all times (that is, not just when coming to a stop).
Perhaps inseam challenged GS riders like me are a minority so my question may be of interest to very few. That said, BMW clearly thought that making the bike more accessible to shorter riders was not insignificant, so why take away a ride height configuration option that shorter/lighter riders clearly used?

Ian, I’ve been waiting for this. Thank you. Look forward to the series. Lot of comments out there on the headlight. Early on I listened to designer Christian Hahn-Wornle discuss it on Long Way Home’s channel. I’m happy to see it’s now symmetrical at least. I think it’s important for safety reasons to look different enough to be noticed by other vehicles on the road. Right now one of my concerns with the new bike is the availability/compatibility of soft luggage. I’ve got a lot of money in the bags for my current 1250. I wish they would have taken that into account for customers that want to transition to the new bike. It is significant enough to make me pause buying it. I think overall the new bike’s looks and features are great. I’ve yet been able to ride one so can’t comment there. It appears there’s a lot of things we’ve been asking for. I think folks have to appreciate that this bike was ten years in the design process and the designers tried to make it meet as many rider demands as they could. I think they did a great job and look forward to hearing more from you on your experience.

I know you really had a good review on the Rally and I have an Aprilia/Ducati dealer only 10 miles away. Added the Ducati to my garage with my 2023 Aprilia Tuareg. I wonder if we've reached the point in motorcycle development where we've passed the point of diminishing returns. Can a strong intermediate rider really notice "HUGE" improvements with a new bike compared to even a 5 year old comparable machine? Clearly, if money isn't a concern, then it doesn't matter, but $31k for a BMW or $14k for the Husky sounds insane. That said, the triple black is really nice and the best option IMHO. Keep up the great work Ian and all of us with a more modest budget can live vicariously through you!

As a street superbike rider my whole life, I sold my CBR XX Blackbird in 2017 as the roads/hwys in N. CA became way too dangerous. I bought a new KLR 650 and moved to Montana in 2019. I love my KLR. I’ve always been intrigued by BMW but absolutely never considered even looking at one. My close buddy up the dirt road from me has 4 BMW’s including 2 GS’s. Another buddy just bought a 2024 GS 1250. I started fiddling around looking at them online about 6 weeks ago, watched multiple YT vids from European reviewers and have fallen in love with the bike. You’re the first American review I’ve come across thanx to the algorithm!! Loved the vid and am absolutely looking forward to your future reviews with my new sub to ya 😊 especially the aftermarket stuff!!
PS f@ck Hellifornia LOL I’ll buy mine in Missoula. Zero sales tax. $220 at DMV gets personalized (your word) and specialized (plate background with like 100 to choose from) and permanent (never EVER have to pay registration yearly) plates.

Congrats Ian on your beautiful new bike. I absolutely love it and may have one in my distant future.
The two items that maybe a disappointment for me is the lack of true rear light and the lack of fan or ventilation in the tank compartment cubby. As you mentioned in your video, the rear turn signals are larger and this may be okay and grow on me. Time will tell but I’m also curious if the aftermarket will address this item. I could imagine the aftermarket coming up with a rear light that flashes or pulses when the rear-facing radar senses a vehicle approaching from behind.
Thanks for your videos. I’m looking forward to this series!
