    The crank hub issue is blown out of proportion. I have two friends that work at a BMW dealership. One has been there 9(started in 2012) years and the other 15 years(started in 2006). They have never seen that issue on the s55 motor. I daily drive my 2015 M3(except in bad weather) I drive it hard at times, I have the DCT transmission. No problems. I do like to brag about my car having a factory badge delete on the trunk...no M3 symbol.

    • @jinxtacy
      @jinxtacy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blown out of proportion yes. An issue that is possible? Yes. Seems to happen more with people upping the power along with the DCT. The money would probably be better spent getting a group of friends to throw money into an annual pot and if the issue happens then the person that has the issue collects the pot for a new motor/repair. It would probably be cheaper and in reality, everyone would probably get their money back instead of thousands of people spending thousands of dollars to prevent the unlikely.

    Great video, lots of good information about the S55. At 20:50 dude said, he has to let off the throttle after the mods he has done with the car, cause it breaks loose, which is a common problem even with stock F80/82. Knowing this, I don’t understand why people are always trying to make more power. More power just makes this car un drivable.

    • @johnnylima784
      @johnnylima784 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fully agree. I have a 2016 Standard m3 LCi and went back to stock after fbo as the car becomes almost undrivable with all that power!don’t get me wrong it’s very enjoyable with the added mods and extra oomph but it becomes a bit difficult to max the car say around corners or powersliding for example because the car becomes somewhat unbalanced due to all the extra power. I feel like I have to constantly half throttle like I’m driving on ice.I’m a straight line it’s all good, but these cars are so fun in the corners why would you take that away from the driving experience. For me at least, it takes some of the fun away, as I believe pushing the car to its max is much more enjoyable.

    Here we go again with the crank hub. Yes, crank hub do fail but most of the time it’s due to modifications which increases torque. Also how aggressive you drive the car plays a big factor. I know guys who have their F80 for years and no crank hub issue. I have a 2016 F80 and have never had a crank hub problem. Again, I’m not saying it can’t fail. But it’s funny when people go nuts over it because they’ve seen some cases of it on social media. If it was a huge universal problem, BMW would have issued a recall on it. With all that being said, I do agree upgrading it if you are doing modifications for power and torque increase. Someone mentioned dropping some spacers. I agree, it will make the car look more aggressive and have a wider stance. 12mm front and 15mm rears is a good setup. The better option is to buy a wider wheel but spaces will do the trick until you’re ready to invest in wheels.

    • @TruongMikeMai
      @TruongMikeMai 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      BMW will never recall it, just like the S65 rod bearings. S63tu has rod bearing failures as well. So does the N63tu. N20/N26 has timing chain guide failures. Even N54 has turbo, injectors, and high pressure fuel pump failure. They only offered "extended warranty". Sorry but no manufacture will openly admit fault and offer recalls as it'll cost millions of dollars. Until someone does a lawsuit and wins, we will never see it happen

    Mike is saying it's a "must" upgrade, but it's all BS. 1% of failure from all F8x owners doesnt dicate tht it's a must upgrade/fix. Even if it does fail, most of the time it will just throw off timing which won't leave to engine failure do to engine going into limp mode.
    It's FAKE pandamonia in the F8x world. Just being real. Love your content as always Spencer

    • @TruongMikeMai
      @TruongMikeMai 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should've rephrased it. It's not a must, just as it's not a must to get car insurance. But in the case that you're one of the unlucky few (Very few) that has timing thrown off significantly, you can bend the intake valves. Which will require a head rebuild (I've done this repair 3 times now). Not saying that it's going to happen to everyone, but it's always better to be safe

    • @The_Diesel733
      @The_Diesel733 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TruongMikeMai Car insurance is a totally different thing and that analogy doesn't work. Yes you need insurance and its there to protect you from comprehensive and also liability. Crank Hub, less than 1% failure so the odds are in F8X owners. Even keyed crank hubs fail.

    I’ve been into Bimmers ever since I went to the factory as a kid, for euro delivery with my family in 1975 for the first e-21’s to roll off the assembly line. Those motors had forged internals. My current e-21 has almost 200k miles on it, and I drive the crap out of it and can’t kill it. And I can’t help but to be disappointed with this crank hub issue and ZERO factory support. But, I’ve heard failures are in 1% of stock cars and that number increases as the mods do. So, these clever fixes are impressive, but how well do they hold up? Drilling holes into the crankshaft, metal shavings, balancing issues, etc…? I’ve seen different designs and can only wonder if they stand up to the testing the engineers do at back at Munich.
    Props to the aftermarket guys though.

    Equal length midpipe is the first mod, then crank hub

  • @SneakySnakeTheSnake
    @SneakySnakeTheSnake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Crank hub is just like rod bearings on S65, very small percentage effected... there's a 99% chance you don't need to worry about it, but it still will keep you wide awake at night lol. You could probably just run it and NEVER have the issue. Obviously the shop is going to tell you to do it... its a $3600 job. I personally would only do it if you're planning on modifying power significantly.
    I still have original bearings in my e92 m3 but I do an oil analysis every oil change for peace of mind. I might change them if I want to go supercharged.

    • @TruongMikeMai
      @TruongMikeMai 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is true, but after paying for so many oil analysis, you could've done the rod bearings. While the S55 crank hub failure isn't a 100% failure item, it's still a failure item. Why roll the dice and risk spending more money rebuilding the head. At the end of the day, its preventive maintenance. I've seen them fail and just had a S55 in the shop this week, due to crank hub failure. Prior to that was 2 weeks. Prior to that was 3 weeks

    • @SneakySnakeTheSnake
      @SneakySnakeTheSnake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TruongMikeMai Blackstone does oil analysis for like $28, I do 1 oil change a year. The closest shop to me that does bearings is a minimum of $1800. Regardless, they should be done because rod bearing failure grenades the motor and a used s65 is anywhere between 6-10k. But hey, if I bought a f80 M3 or m4, I would definitely be getting a warranty.

    What will it take to turn my F30 335i into a beast? Need $ estimate. It’s completely stock. I have purchased bootmode but never used it, and have charge pipe not installed.

    Let's crank hub, sounds like it's blown out of proportion the n54 335IS head transmission never heard about crank on those tuned cars..

    Love your videos man and one of the main sources that lead me to finally pull the trigger on a 2018 M3 Comp with only 44K mikes and a rare Certified Preowned. However, please tell me, at what mileage should I get this controversial crank hub and what’s a the go to reliable aftermarket one to get?
    Thanks and keep up the great videos!!

    Great video, super helpful. My understand is the crank hub issue is still a low probability event, so spending $3,600 to save $10k doesn’t seem worth it to me. You would need a 33% failure rate to break even. Now if you can’t stomach the $10k expense then Perhaps makes sense.

    I think this issue is overplayed, had one for three years and thrashed it... it was fine. The issue I found was the steering rack loosening up and you get a knocking at lower speeds. Otherwise solid car!
