It's 2024 and thank you for this video! I love my old school Kenmore washer and used this video to help me do a complete transmission and clutch replacement. It got a new timer about a year ago so I figured I was committed. I'll be back to drop another comment in 20 years!
Thank you for the video. I could just kiss you. My husband and I purchased the part and installed it this morning. I did one load and the problem appears fixed. It is such a relief. The old clutch didn't appear to be broken but was covered in black debris. Again, thank you so much. You saved me $100s of dollars.
Steve, Thank you very much for your excellent video. I really appreciate you all taking the time to share your expertise. I think we owe it to the people who made these machines to keep them going as long as possible. Your perfectly presented step by step instructions made me look "awesome" to my wife. Thank you very much! Best wishes to you all. Time Browser
Just used this video to repair our washing machine. Great video! Definitely a Life Saver. Especially considering a repair service wanted to charge me about $580 for the repairs!!! 😠😠. Clutch cost me $50 and some of my spare time. Thanks again! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great video! I changed the coupling on my Whirlpool washer without any problem. The motor was running but the agitator was not running. I followed your very detailed video and wow! the washer is running better than before. Thanks a million.
This is the best video I have found on the replacement of a clutch. Just a realization: returning the Retaining Clip is not as easy as shown on the video. Also, I broke my D clip. Besides that, we are happy with the repaired washing machine. We should repair things than throw them away Thank you from the Philippines.
Great video! I just did this repair and it was a cakewalk. I just disconnected the pump and left the motor attached to the gearbox. It slid out easily and wasn't too heavy all as one unit. Doing it this way allowed me to leave the cover and everything on, other than the agitator of course.
Great video - thank you for the detailed walk-through, as well as the excellent video production. This is definitely among the top 1% of the DIY videos I've reviewed for appliance repair.
I'm not the one with that problem but I like this response here because it's given me the idea to take my wet/dry vac and clean the assembly of any debri that might be there. A clean rag might do the job even better.
Thanks! Almost bought new washer (no agitator, though), but after brief research and a couple of hours of replacing and cleaning, my old washer looks and works like new.
Watching you do repairs is like watching Bob Ross paint. Very relaxing. However, I’d love to see some outtakes with you throwing tools and cursing with bloodied hands. Like how mine usually go 😉
@partselect oh the repair went smooth, i was like wow everything worked first try, and man you should see the difference on how fast the washer picks up on speed, its like a brand new washer.
Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I took my washer apart and put it back together no problem with these easy to follow instructions. I replaced the motor coupler but used this video as a tutorial first. Its good as new and I feel great doing it myself
Also my first washer. It was a little difficult and I would recommend def watching out for the sharp edges first time. So glad for these instructions though.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Morgan Colton Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great video, was very easy to follow. The clutch springs I got were light blue and dark blue and the one in the machine was between the two! Instructions said blue or black! I went with the light blue because it looked like a heavier spring for my large capacity machine. Running the machine now and all seems good except a very strange squeak while agitating.
Good video. I think the clutch is whats wrong with mine. it's a Kenmore that looks like this one. It only washes on the Gentle cycle. Won't wash on the normal one. I watched a video similar to this one where the Tech did not remove the cabinet. I see by yours that it makes the job easier. I hope you have videos on Kenmore dishwashers too I have a problem with mine. Thanks again!
Very grateful with all I have learned with you, Sr. My question is that my washer machine doesn't have the ring that you remove in minute 10:35. I have already change the Clutch assembly, shaft Direct Drive, washer motor coupling, water bomb, and many other little tings , but it still make a lot of noise between wash and spin. And I can't find the ring between the shaft and the clutch assembly. I think that's the problem, but , since I got my washer machine used, I really don't know what happened with it.
Excellent video. I just want to know if the cabinet itself can be disassembled without damaging it. I have a lot of rust between the top of the cabinet and the sides and front. I don't know why.
I just finished replacing the clutch on my washing machine. Great video! It helped me do the job easily. One question I have is when I lifted the washer off its back and set it upright, there was the sound of a small metal object hitting tile. Lifting it back up I found a small gold color piece that looks very much like a common head nail, about 1.5 inches long, with a hold through the pointed tip that looks like something a cotter pin or retaining clip of some sort would go through to keep it in place. I set the washer on its back and looked all through it, but nothing seemed out of place. Any idea what this "nail" is for? Thanks again for a really great video!!
Appreciate the video but I would edit @ 11:19 the placement of the brake cam and/or the configuration of the cam is important for inserting the clutch, also need to mention the clutch spring needs to be moved so it won't hit the brake cam. Also, in the case of an older and more used washer a rubber mallet will be useful to hammer the clutch assembly in order for the three bolt mounting holes to line up with the mounting points on the clutch base to re-install the screws.
Very comprehensive video, sir, and well done. My washer tub and agitator function normally, but I'm guessing the clutch is the source of initially loud, tapering-off screeching that occurs as the spin cycle spools up. Before I pull this thing apart, what do you think?
I used this video about a year ago to replace the clutch in my washer. The agitator worked and spun perfectly afterward. Unfortunately, my washer is once again not spinning. Is it common to replace the clutch after one year? Or is there something else that might be wrong with my washer. Thanks for the great video.
A couple of parts might cause the problem you’re having. I’d start with having a look with direct drive motor coupling. Normal use will create wear on the coupling and eventually wear these plastic disks out. Inspect those to see if they are faulty or if your washer is belt driven then inspect the belt/idler pulley. If they are okay then have a look at the motor and transmission and make sure they are working properly. Did you notice any dust or burning smell when the washer was in use? That's a common symptom of a faulty clutch. We have information available on our site in our free repair help section. I’d suggest going through it as it’s quite helpful. Let us know if you need additional help and if so provide the model number.
Thanks for the great video! My problem is, if left unattended my washer drains but fails to spin. However, if I hear it draining the water and then raise and relower the lid, I hear the drive engage and the spin cycle will actually start. To me, it sounds like some sort of clutch issue. For $20, it can't hurt to replace it on my 15 yr old washer. Thanks again!
Steve, you're awesome. Thanks so much. A little hard water wear cleaned a new clutch part, agitator kit and coupling and I am back up in little time and lots less spent. :) cheers ! Happy
I posted on another great video of yours about the agitator not spinning with the drum during spin cycle. I thought maybe belt, only to find its a direct drive motor. I guess that helps narrow it down lol.. I took the washer agitator off completely to observe it during spin cycle and noticed that grooved shaft does not spin, tho the metal disc and plastic base does spin. Watching this video, it seems the next logical step would be to try this, do you think so? Thanks so much
I appreciate the effort put into this instructional video. I cannot get my drive shaft out. I can pull it out about 3-4 inches but no further. I have pulled my back trying. You do not show removing the spanner nut. Is it necessary to remove that? That is the only thing that I can see that might be keep it from pulling out completely from the bottom. I ordered the spanner nut wrench tonight because it will not budge using other methods and work arounds. My machine is 20 years old, at least, and lots of crud covers everything, so its hard to really identify the parts, but have managed to get everything out/off but the last few inches of this drive shaft! Please advise if you can. Thanks.
At 18:42 - Should you lubricate the spline shaft with waterproof grease before you reinstall the agitator? When I took mine off for this procedure.. it had some type of original greasy residue.
Excellent videos. All went as shown until I tried to remove transmission. As I slide out agitator shaft there is a mechanical interference (clunk) that prevents it from being removed. This interference happens at about 2-inches. All seems free and clear, but the shaft will not slide out. Any thoughts? Model LA9500XTN1 S/N: CB0503088. Thank you!
Thank you for the compliment. We have some great customer written instructions on our site. If you use the model number of your washer you can access the washer’s schematics. We have information about replacing the transmission there and there are some detailed instructions - search for part number 3360629. Start there and see if that helps. If not then let us know. :)
Pull harder or tap the shaft. I had the same problem and just pulled it out. No need to pull the housing or remove the motor (unless you are replacing the motor coupling and then it is easier after the motor/transmission is out).
I ran into a problem that I never expected. There should be a video about this! The direct drive couplers in newer machines have steel shaft bushings. The older had plastic. I had a bad clutch and got to the coupler the half attached to the Transmission had a crack in the plastic. I tried to remove it. The bushing had seized to the Transmission. I used WD40 and soaked and pulled over a period of hours. The thing would not budge and all the plastic was destroyed up. I tried to pry it lose the seal in the transmission came out. In hindsight I should have drilled the bushing. I prefer the plastic couplers.
Great video! Thanks a million! But how do we know if tge problem is the motor, coupler or the clutch assembly? I hear the motor but nothing moves including the coupler. Can help it move by hand a little as if something is stuck or motor has no torque.
Hi. Thanks for the video. After repairing my washer I found a part that fell out of the washer. I could not find out where it went until watching this video. At 6:41 you can see this part, a clear long cup that clips on to the frame. It is to the left of the transmission, right next to the empty hole along the edge. I am trying to figure out what this part it for.
Those are shipping pins used when shifting the washing machine after the washing machine is set up they disconnect the shipping pins from the tub and they fall into the little plastic cups they're not used for anything else you do not need them
I have a whirlpool cabrio WTW6340WW0 Whirlpool Washer that vibrates really bad during low speed spin cycle. I have replaced the suspension rods, leveled the washer, pulled the drum, no noise coming from drum shaft or play from shaft, checked motor bolt for tightness .it seems like its missing more suspension parts on the bottom drum. any thoughts on what else I can check.
Would you mind addressing an issue with a Kenmore washer spinning but makes a loud knocking noise during the spin cycle. Stops when you open the lid. From everything we check out could it be the clutch? Thank you for your time.
My direct-drive Kenmore 500 produces a loud "bang" sound every time a spin cycle begins. I am fairly certain the noise is produced by the spring portion of the clutch "slamming" into the brake cam, to release the brakes and allow the tub to spin...Is the loud "bang" normal? Other than that, the tub spins normally and rapidly and there seems to be no damage done to the brake cam or other components of the basket drive.
This great video has helped tremendously in disassembly. I have a Sears Kenmore Ultra Fabric Care IV washing machine model no. 110.92593220. Water for wash runs fine, but agitation and spin cycles make a constant grinding noise although there is no visible tub/basket motion during agitation and spin. The coupling is not broken, and I am not sure if the motor, clutch, or gear case/transmission is the issue. Any suggestions?
great video !! my washer goes out of balance when spin cycle starts, however the tub seems to be in balance but the motor is moving around. Any sggestions?
Mines missing the e-ring. Not sure it it flew out when I was taking it apart a few days ago and I just don't remember or what could have happened to it. Can you run without it?
great video but at 13:00 you can see it real good at bottom left on the stand what is the plastic tube with what looks like pins in it what is that and what the for any help very much appreciated
changed my coupler,no problem, but it lost oil while tipped for a day,now it stinks up the place! no further leaking seen, but bad odor.is it oil or the coupler settling in? this seemed such an easy fix, but now theres a slight water leak at the pump too!any advice about that oil spill?
My daughters whirlpool washer goes into spin cycle, seems to spins fast but clothes are wetter then they should be. Nothing is clogging the drain. Is it still a clutch problem?? Thanks
HI,JUST WANTING TO REPLACE MY CLUTCH ON MY WASHING MACHINE ITS A WHIRLPOOL FROM 1987 WORKS GREAT. I TOOK BACK PANEL OFF TURNED IT ON ITS SIDE TOOK PUMP OFF AND MOTOR,AND THREE TRANSMISSION BOLTS DID I MISS A STEP BEFORE OR DURING THIS PROCESS>>
what would be the symptom that would lead me to believe I need a new clutch assembly? It bangs when it stops or starts a different cycle. I thought that is what I needed. thats why Iam here on this site. I just exchanged the lid switch and pump cuz it wouldnt drain. But it still bangs and not in a good way. LOL advice? Good video BTW.
Do you find it absolutely necessary to remove the cabinet? I have done couplers without removing it and didn't find it too bad. Going to replace a clutch on a Whirlpool washer tomorrow and thinking I can probably do it without removing the cabinet.
Its a Simpson eziset750, the tub turns clockwise so much then locks, and if I turn it anti clockwise it starts clicking.... while its washing, it agitates only in clockwise direction. If I hold the agitator and spin the tub it moves so far in each direction before locking(and no clicking). thanks for the quick response. Karl
Need help... I did the clutch repair on a LSR7010pq1. The center shaft was corroded and would not come out. Took a lot of effort, hammering and time but I got it out. I removed the inner spin basket thinking it would help me get the shaft out. Wrong. The drive block is stuck in the basket and no amount of hammering with a 4lb mallet will set it free. Replaced clutch and reassembled without issue. The drive block was very difficult to tighten and get it to lock on the shaft. But I got it tight. Now when empty, Low spin is fine but in high spin it goes violently out of balance. I checked the suspension components and they are all in tact. The Spin basket remained attached to the shaft after several tests. Not sure what went wrong. I think it is related to the drive block or the basket. What confuses me is that it is fine on low spin. I am going to run it without the Spin basket to see what happens. Any Ideas what my problem is ?
Change the coupling because it was broken And I checked the clutch And it was hard to move I suppose that's good. What else could cause The rinse cycle Not to spin.? Transmission?
Hi Karl, Can you provide your model number? Is it working properly other than the clicking noise, or is it presenting other symptoms as well? Thanks a lot!
Great video and I've ordered from you folks before but I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to. I have the IP43001 (Inglis Washer) model and the only thing that doesn't work is the agitator. It spins fine, empties the water fine and breaks fine. It just doesn't agitate at all and there is a slight burning smell. Am I looking at a possible transmission issue? :( I just want to be sure before ordering parts. Many thanks.
skid plate is out of adjustment your transmission is shot and or clutch pads are worn,or clutch pads need to be lightly sanded with emery cloth and and cluth pad spring needs to be stretched
Advice needed - replaced the coupling and the clutch and it worked for 2 loads then quit spinning. Took it apart then put it together and the agitator spins(no clothes in it) but not the tub. Any advice??
If the motor is turning in the correct direction and the coupler is fine, then the problem should be with the clutch or brake follower. Verify that the parts are properly installed
My washer Whirlpool Washer LSR6332KQ0 agitates but will not spin. I also smell a faint burning rubber smell when it tries. I can prop the lid open and spin it by hand, which after going fast enough performs a normal spin cycle. My question is: what part of the clutch broke? Do I need a whole new clutch or just the clutch band?
I have a large clunking sound the moment the washer starts, is this the clutch? When the washer comes to a halt it was also making a thunking sound. The sound only happens for 1/2 a second or so. The machine works fine otherwise.
Thanks for the vid, very helpful; empowering actually. Question if you have time: I have an Inglis IS43000 that appears to function properly until the spin cycle decreases or the lid is opened during that cycle. When either of these occurs the machine makes a loud banging sound and the tub appears to be vibrating as much as spinning. I've dismantled the thing and the 'usual suspects' look okay. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Hello, I was curious. I have this model. I see you taking a plastic piece and a spring off off the Spanner Nut? My Washer doesn't have them parts? Would that make it not spin? I've been trying to find out why it won't spin out. All the waster drains and works fine, but my clothes are soaked after the spin? Will those parts make this happen? And if so, Can you tell me where I can buy the parts please? Thanks!
I have the exact same issue as dcanimaltube above-- raising/lowering the lid causes the spin cycle to engage- otherwise it continues the cycle without spinning, though the water is dispensed correctly (resulting in wet clothes). Is that definitely a clutch issue?
12 years later and this video helped me fix my washing machine that had stopped spinning
It's 2024 and thank you for this video! I love my old school Kenmore washer and used this video to help me do a complete transmission and clutch replacement. It got a new timer about a year ago so I figured I was committed. I'll be back to drop another comment in 20 years!
I love this guy.... he so calmly fixes everything. Has saved me so much money!
I REPLACED THE COUPLER and Cleaned up the Clutch and now it works perfect as new.
Your video is very descriptive and helpful. Many Thanks.
Thank you for the video. I could just kiss you. My husband and I purchased the part and installed it this morning. I did one load and the problem appears fixed. It is such a relief. The old clutch didn't appear to be broken but was covered in black debris. Again, thank you so much. You saved me $100s of dollars.
Still saving husband's weekends 9 years later. Well done! Made job this simple and fast to complete.
Bravo! The only video that shows the alignment of the 1/2" metal stop clip before inserting the agitator.
Steve, Thank you very much for your excellent video. I really appreciate you all taking the time to share your expertise. I think we owe it to the people who made these machines to keep them going as long as possible. Your perfectly presented step by step instructions made me look "awesome" to my wife. Great video - thank you for the detailed walk-through, as well as the excellent video production. This is definitely among the top 1% of the DIY videos I've reviewed for appliance repair.
I like how you really took your time to explain and show the parts you were taking off and replacing !!
Great video step by step. Fixed my problem and I've never worked on a washer before. I appreciate the help.

Very good! Probably saved me having to buy a new washer. This Inglis Liberator is going on 40 years and still going strong. :)
Thanks! Almost bought new washer (no agitator, though), but after brief research and a couple of hours of replacing and cleaning, my old washer looks and works like new.
Sir, you are a lifesaver! Thx so much for taking the time to post this in a step by step fashion for the 'unhandy' among us👌🤓
Nice tutorial. The clutch was the problem. The washer spins again. Getting the cabinet back on ended up being the most frustrating aspect! Thanks
Watching you do repairs is like watching Bob Ross paint. Very relaxing. However, I’d love to see some outtakes with you throwing tools and cursing with bloodied hands. Like how mine usually go 😉
Thanks for the help! Fantastic video. I could’ve figured it out without this video but it would’ve taken 10 times longer. Thank you!

Never thought I'd ever repair my own washing machine, but I did, thanks to your teachings I did it! Yay! lol :o)
Also my first washer. It was a little difficult and I would recommend def watching out for the sharp edges first time. So glad for these instructions though.
Thank you so much my man. I saved my grandmaw from needing to buy a new washer after I troubleshooted it. Your guide A+.
Thank you so much for posting this Steve! I replaced my clutch and now my machine drains properly!
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Legend Mitchell Instablaster =)
@Morgan Colton Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Morgan Colton It worked and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account !
@Legend Mitchell happy to help :)
The best "how-to" I've used on TH-cam. I could have done it without it, but would have taken me 4 times longer. Thanks!
You're welcome and thanks for the compliment!
Great instructions, though I didn't have to take the cabinet off... But this still helped me fix my washer, thanks!

Thank you for helping me do this repair. The hardest part was just finding the part locally!
this has been about the best instructional video on how to do this, thanks
Thanks. My problem was the drain pump, but this video helped me disassemble and find the problem.
steve great tutorial! is it possible to mention the symptoms of the problem to your tutorials?
Steve is the God of Appliance Repair
All Hail Steve
Steve you make it look very easy and it is if we follow your instructions . Great video! Great teacher.
Excellent step by step instructions. Though I'm not sure why it was necessary to remove the cabinet. I think easier just to turn the washer over.
excelente video,muy bien explicado paso a paso,lo felicito profesor.saludos desde Caracas,Venezuela.

Thanks for the video . It was very helpful.

The hardest part was getting the cabinet back on!! Also, the little bolt at the top of the shaft rusted badly, an hour of fightingto remove.

Anytime the motor is turning, the motor to transmission coupler should also be turning. If not bad coupler.
If you start it by hand and it sort of spins, it is the clutch.
Thanks you back in business
I was wondering about these as well?
Mucho thanks for these helpful tutorials 😊
Would you mind addressing an issue with a Kenmore washer spinning but makes a loud knocking noise during the spin cycle. Stops when you open the lid. From everything we check out could it be the clutch? Thank you for your time.
Thanks for this detailed video
Very informative. Thanks👍👍
great video but at 13:00 you can see it real good at bottom left on the stand what is the plastic tube with what looks like pins in it what is that and what the for any help very much appreciated
changed my coupler,no problem, but it lost oil while tipped for a day,now it stinks up the place! no further leaking seen, but bad odor.is it oil or the coupler settling in? this seemed such an easy fix, but now theres a slight water leak at the pump too!any advice about that oil spill?
What's the model number of your whirlpool washer and I'll see what installation instructions are available.
what would be the symptom that would lead me to believe I need a new clutch assembly? It bangs when it stops or starts a different cycle. I thought that is what I needed. thats why Iam here on this site. I just exchanged the lid switch and pump cuz it wouldnt drain. But it still bangs and not in a good way. LOL advice? Good video BTW.
Do you find it absolutely necessary to remove the cabinet? I have done couplers without removing it and didn't find it too bad. Going to replace a clutch on a Whirlpool washer tomorrow and thinking I can probably do it without removing the cabinet.
You don’t necessarily need to remove the cabinet to change the coupler, but removing the cabinet is easy and does give you better access.
Karl
Fantastic Video Steve. Thank you!
Hi Karl,
Can you provide your model number?
What type of Channellock pliers are recommended for the eclips
I wish you could have shown in greater detail the alignment of the springs prior to re-installing the gearbox....
Which spring are you referring to?
there is a spring on the brake...and one on the clutch...does it not matter where they are located prior to re-attaching the gear box/?
there is a SPRING ON THE CLUTCH AND ONE ON THE BREAK !
