    Your method is sound and I can feel its efficacy. Being a novice, setting up a studio space in this bachelor apartment and getting some good materials in it, I am embarking on a thrill-ride with brush in hand. Thank you for your generous instruction. Bravo to you, I wish you good health and a long lustrous career.💐

    Excellent tips, Samuel! I'm excited to hear you talk about the downside of painting on a toned canvas. I always felt like I must be the only one who felt that way. While it works for many artists, it always gave me problems. Thanks for all you do. I love your work!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I had the same problems with toning my canvas, but I didn't realise until a few years later. You'll see from my older TH-cam videos that I used to tone my canvas, but then I found my darks were coming out too dark.
      When I went back to painting on a white canvas, everything was easier, my tonal values were better, and my colors looked cleaner. You can gauge your darkest darks with the white of the canvas which helps create the tonal range in your painting.
      There is nothing wrong with toning your canvas, and I sometimes do this from time to time if I would like the warm effect in my painting. For the most part I prefer painting on a white canvas.
      Thanks for watching my videos 😀

      I started using toned canvases, with very pale color because starting out I used cotton canvases, which had a lot of texture. As one gets better and uses the finer linen, etc. it now makes sense to try it with the white background.

    Thanks Sam. I usually tone my canvas. Will try leaving it white in my next painting. You use greens to perfection. I will try to limit my pallette too..

      Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it! And yes, painting on a white canvas is easier if you are struggling with tonal values and colour mixing.

    Very much appreciated, very informative, useful & wise. I'll tell you a struggle I have and probably others have as well. Translating values into appropriate colours, or finding the proper values in the colours you apply over a grisaille for instance. Because I can certainly draw, trying various lighting schemes, i end up with some really nice drawings, but when I go to colour that's when the whole thing falls apart 😯. So I've been practicing pushing my values darker and lighter and this has helped a bit. But since I don't know of any painter/instructor who addresses this issue, perhaps you might be interested in tackling it from the point of view of learning the values of colours. For instance yellow is very limited, but blue can go the whole gamut. At any rate, thanks for reading if you made it so far. And thanks for all your great videos 😀🇨🇦🛶

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand your struggles. In my opinion understanding the values is half the battle with colour mixing.

      Just try it.There is no artist that made a wonderful drawing or painting from his first experience.Infact if I show you my first portrait you would laugh at my face🤣.You can inform yourself and see the basics and just try it and practice it.

    I just started using an underpainting for the last 3 paintings I've done and I love it. Then I watch this video and you say paint on a white surface, now I'm confused. I thought the underpainting was a revelation and I'd found the missing ingredient!!!!!! Now what????? I think the lesson is there are no rules.

    I don't agree with you need to sketch I paint intuitively and it makes a much more lively painting

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      In my opinion sketching is essential. Prior to doing this I used to paint intuitively and I would always run into problems with composition and I had to give up on many paintings. Very frustrating. Sketching is the solid foundation for your paintings.

    • @sujanithtottempudi2991
      @sujanithtottempudi2991 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I disagree with you...sketching for most artists is very very essential...it's a road map...intuitive painting is maybe for very advanced artists
