I drove Toyota for years starting with a 1987 Cressida. My first Subaru is the 2024 Outback touring I just bought it last year. I left Toyota fans since I can see its quality is dropping and still OVERPRICED. My Outback today has 10K miles on its and so far I love it. The Subaru Safety Eyesight is better than my Highlander Safety sens 2.5. Subaru is still new to me as I still learning new functions everyday, but so far so good.
I have a 2024 Outback Onyx, and I love it! It's my first Subaru, and I didn't get the hype until I test drove it. Man! Is the best car I could have I asked for. I live in Northern BC Canada, and reliability in the snowy roads and comfort for long road trips and camping in the summer is a must. Mine is also close to 10k (kms)😅
I just got my 2024 Crosstrek Limited in Alpine Green. This is my first Subaru, and my first ever new car. Coming from a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500, this is quite an upgrade in almost every way for what I need. If anyone is interested, here are some pros and cons now that I've just reached 5,000 miles (I research like crazy before purchasing things so I hope this helps). Pros: I test drove this in December of 2023 but didn't buy it for ten months. I worried about the endless reviews of the infotainment. The Subaru side of things are terrible, but I don't use them. Wireless Apple CarPlay is great and I have no issues with it whatsoever. I love it! -Gas mileage is great. It gets a little over 34 on the highway, even on a recent 1,000 mile road trip with three passengers and the trunk absolutely full. -Suspension is awesome. -The Alpine Green is gorgeous in person. -The Harmon Kardon sound system is awesome. -Storage is ample in the back, and I sometimes fold my seats down to utilize the full capacity. -The seats are comfy. Heated seats are great. Just did a 1,000 mile road trip and even my third passenger in the back seat said he was comfy the whole time. -I didn't think I'd use it much, but the Subaru app is actually something I use every day now to start my car to heat it up a few minutes before I head out for work. -I use the auto start/stop and Auto Vehicle Hold simultaneously every time I drive. I think it's a great combo around town. There's a timer when it's on, and on average, I have my engine off for nearly an hour and save 0.25-0.4 gallons of gas per tank. It's not much but it's cool. It doesn't work (or will auto start quickly) if your AC is on, though. -First oil change and service at the Subaru dealership was just over $100 which isn't bad. Obviously it will be more for the second service with different services needed like tire rotations, different fluid replacements, cabin air filters, etc. -Eyesight is awesome and the safety features are helpful. I turned down the chimes so it rarely beeps at me excerpt for helpful things like rear cross traffic alert when I'm backing up (usually in a Trader Joe's parking lot LOL). -Adaptive Cruise Control and automatic steering are cool. Again, I came from an old truck with no tech, so this is all new to me. I like it. -Sport Mode and the paddle shifters are silly, but I have fun with them in the twisty backroads! -I find the power to be adequate for what it is. Coming from my V8 pickup truck, the Crosstrek doesn't compare, but they're not in the same class, and I don't find myself wishing I had more power. -Keyless entry and all of the smart key stuff is a new experience for me and I love it. I never take my key out of my pocket. Ever. Cons: The number one issue for me: The plastic interior rattles like absolute crazy. Door panels, dash, everything. It's insane to me that a brand new car can be this rattly. I've been researching sound dampening and door panel removal. It might not bug everyone, but it's worse that my 2009 GMC with its old cracked dashboard. I don't know why but this drives me crazy. It's everywhere. I can live with all of the other issues, but I find myself actively searching for how to fix this. It's all over Reddit and other Subaru forums, too. 2. The city gas mileage is closer to 20-23mpg. Not too far from what's advertised. My “Trip B” mileage for the life of the car (just over 5,000 miles) is currently 24.6mpg which definitely isn’t 29 combined. 3. You need a SiriusXM subscription to have the weather widgets at the top of the screen. That's lame. If you don't use Sirius (I don't), the screen is just blank / says no data. 4. The infotainment screen isn't responsive for the first minute or so when you start the car, which means you can't immediately adjust HVAC sometimes. Still, I remote start mine a lot anyway, so it's always ready to go by the time I'm in it. Nowhere near as annoying as the plastic rattling. 5. The wireless charger doesn't work for more than a few seconds. It will blink green when you first put your phone on it. No matter the orientation of the phone, it will stop charging and the little green light will start blinking orange. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max with a very thin case.
Thanks for watching and being willing to share this incredible write up!! I hope the rattling issue improves or you find a solution you can live with. I always have my widgets at the top of the screen in different information so I didn’t know the weather widgets were connected to XM. Thanks again!
Nice review, commenting from New York. I love that dark mahogany color but I just bought a 2025 Touring Outback in Autumn Green. I watched your other reviews on the Outback. I’m happy with the non turbo so far. It’s not as sluggish as I thought it would be. I also got to drive it in the snow a couple of times and it’s great. Best car I’ve owned.
Thanks, I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying them. And I agree, the Dark Mahagony is awesome, especially in person. It’s too bad it’s reserved only for the highest trim levels, lol. I’m glad you’re enjoying yours! These things love the snow. ❄️
I just switched from being a longtime Honda owner to a 24 Crosstrek Premium in Offshore Blue it’s stunning! Absolutely ❤ it. My fist Subaru and I’m sure won’t be my last.
I just got a 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness last month, and so far I'm absolutely loving it. I come from a Toyota family, but I switched to Mazda back in 2016. I was in the market for an upgrade from sedans to compact SUV's, and I had considered going back to Toyota with the Corolla Cross or over to Honda (which is my wife's car brand of choice) with the HR-V. While the option to stick to Mazda with the CX-30 was certainly very attractive since the Mazda just felt like a much more luxurious drive, I just felt like the Crosstrek had a more grounded feel to it. I also found the rear seat cabin to be a bit roomier in the and the total cargo space much larger in the Crosstrek. All in all, I'm very happy with my decision. I do find the gold accents on the Wilderness trim a tad annoying, but that's more than made up for in the experience of driving it.
Always love your comparison videos. I'm looking forward to your evaluations of the upcoming Crosstrek and Forester hybrids when they are available... I saw a glimpse of a Crosstrek on a reviewer's site yesterday (though he wasn't able to test drive it). I really like Subaru for not making radical changes to its lineup (with the exception of the poorly reviewed Solitarra - which really is a crappy electric Toyota in disguise). Unrelated to this subject, concerning your brother's consideration of the CyberTruck , I'd like to throw a huge dose of caution into the wind. In Loveland Colorado where I live, and is an EV hot spot, there are currently 28 of them sitting on the distribution lot, not being snatched up by buyers. The market has collapsed for the Cybertruck and apparently most of those wanting to buy, have bought them, with a huge number of people walking away from their reservations. Even worse than that, Tesla is dropping prices making the market for resale of the trucks even more dismal.
Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoy them. I hope they don’t seem too repetitive, but I have had fun lining up two cars just to show how they stack up to each other the past few months. I can’t wait! I think the Forester Hybrids will start arriving in April, so I’ll film a few videos with them as soon as I can. I did also see a few of the big channels got invited to go to the Crosstrek unveiling. That’s really cool, especially since this hybrid system is keeping the Symmetrical AWD and the battery no longer takes up extra storage space. Just the spot of the spare tire (at least in the crosstrek), which is still lame. Even though in a few hundred thousand miles of driving I’ve never had to replace a tire. I still want a spare haha. Thanks for mentioning this! He’s definitely waiting it out for Tesla to do one of their big price reductions and to update the software. But even if the market for them is bad and huge depreciation happens he’s fortunate to be in a position where that wouldn’t be devastating to him. Haha the Cyber Truck is his dream vehicle that he would want to keep long term and he’s been planning for one since their unveiling. 🤪
Nice reviews, Mr Anonymous. Forgetting the EPA numbers, what sort of real-world MPG could I expect from a 2.5 Crosstrek? Reason I ask, our ‘04 Outback 2.5, EPA 28 HWY, always did 32 on trips. Our ‘16 Legacy 2.5, EPA 36 HWY has done 41.5, perfectly flat, at 55 MPH. We’re considering a Crossttek Limited, and just curious about how much better than its EPA MPGs we can expect. Thanke…
That’s a good question. The Crosstrek I owned was a 2.0 Premium. And it often got 30-32mpg at 80mph. Up to 40mpg at 55-60mph, and I never use a full tank in town to gauge that as I drive a lot at speed. I would assume similar to my experience, maybe an MPG or two better, but idk. 🤪
Very interesting review. I would go with the Outback. CVT, has always been the one point people seem to see as a weak point, but I think it has been improved quite a bit over the years, not sure if it is the issue it once was.
Thanks for watching again!! I think the CVTs are just fine. I only wish they were so expensive to replace. But quite few people have commented on my Subaru videos sharing that they have a 10 year old model with 200k miles and still the factory CVT.
My GF has that Crosstrek - she HATES the color ! :( I hope she learns to like it since it’s such an awesome car. I have a 2025 Autumn Green Outback Wilderness ….. I absolutely love it. It’s so comfortable - like driving a couch 🙂
Yeah, they do seem to get cracked glass more often than other cars. In over 5 years of driving Subarus I’ve had a few chips that either myself or a shop filled, and one legitimate cracked windshield. But that was the lawsuit issue with the Subaru’s where the bottom passenger side cracks without impact.
Great review and thought provoking. Two great vehicles that evolve every year. The Outback in 2026 will have what Subaru describes as a more contemporary and modern look. The back will be more aerodynamic, but the car won't be all that different as per a quick review I saw on it. The Crosstrek is an amazing little hatchback with great touches and driving it twith the 182 hp motor is fun with oomph. But these vehicles are for different purposes and a family will not be happy in the Crosstrek. The Outback is the way to go.
Thanks! That’s a good point, if the Outback is a bit less wagon and more modernized and efficient at least there is still the mini wagon Crosstrek. Haha, and in typical car fashion over enough years the Crosstrek should grow in size to eventually being the new Outback, maybe? 🤔 😝
To my understanding they do. If you ever decide to call I recommend asking for one of the managers or the guy in finance that all sit behind the big desk and say the TH-cam guy said they’d hook you up with a good deal!
Being that the spare tire well in my 2024 Outback Limited XT has the same dimensions as that in the Wilderness, I replaced the space saver spare tire with a full-size spare tire-of course, I also had to replace the full-size piece of dense styrofoam with the smaller one that came in the Wilderness. Yes, a little $$$ to make the complete swap, but with that, a nice battery-connected air compressor and two different styles of tire repair kits, I have peace of mind on a long roadtrip. Anxious to see what will replace the Outback in 2026. Personally, I believe it would be in the company’s best interest to consolidate the Forester and Outback lines into one-mate the 2.5L turbo with hybrid battery/motors getting mid- to high 30MPGs and I’ll gladly trade up.
Thanks for sharing this!! Very insightful for others potentially considering swapping to a full size spare. I can’t remember if it was you or another who mentioned doing the same thing a couple months back, but I’m glad it all worked out. If the new Outback is going to look similarly shaped to the Forester then that might be a great option. Combined them and offer several powertrain options. The hybrid Foresters are suppose to start showing up in April!
I've seen pictures of what the new outback is supposed to look like, and honestly, I don't like it, which makes me even happier that I got my outback a few months ago.... I think that this change might impact sales for the outback, because for the longest time, the unique design of the outback has been one of its strong selling points, it's very easy to point out the outback from any other SUV because it doesn't look like any other SUV, but with this new design it is, and I think that might take away some of its mystique.... I personally don't see the point in changing something that to this day is still having success and is still popular..... i'm a good bowler so I will use bowling terminology as an example.... if I'm currently bowling great, getting strikes, making my spares, and consistently bowling in the lower 200s, and then all of a sudden, I decide to change my stance, or the way I throw the ball, and yes, maybe I might bowl even better, or my average could drop drastically, the point is, if I'm already bowling great, then why would I try or need to change?.... to me it's more risk than reward, I understand if something is not working out or is losing sales, then yes change might be a good thing, but if a proven tried and true formula is still working then I don't see the point.... just my thoughts
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!! I’m glad you’re happy with your decision. I’ve heard that the people who have seen the new Outback in person actually think it looks good. But also looks are subjective so we’ll see!
@ .... I don't think it looks bad per se, the problem is I think now it looks more like any other SUV, which, in my opinion takes away the outbacks mystique, but that's just my opinion, I'm sure there are some people that will disagree with me, I just feel that if a formula works then you stay with it

Should be reliable for a long time. I got almost 82k on my 22 impreza just normal matance so far.
I have a 2024 Outback Onyx, and I love it! It's my first Subaru, and I didn't get the hype until I test drove it. Man! Is the best car I could have I asked for.

Also replaced tires at about 50k. Amazingly still on same brakes as when new.

@ when regular driving do you suggest the “S” or “I” mode on the steering wheel?
Nice. I liked driving my Crosstrek loaner. Had it for over a month.

love the Crosstrek color
Outback has a lot more space and the same gas mileage for almost the same price, which is why we bought two Outbacks.
Like both the outback and crosstrek i considered both cars on my list for my next new car

I'd give Subaru strong consideration, but all I read about are cracked windshields that have to be replaced repeatedly.

Does your Subaru dealership sell warranties out of state?

For sure! I love the look of lifted off road wagons and I don’t want that to change either haha.
34k sales price - we paid $$$$$ less
I’m good on Subarus. The CVT is a deal breaker.
