Drying agents like CaCl2 are added to react and take away any water present in the mixture.

Common error which stops the liquid from flowing freely..... imagine pouring a liquid out of a can, eith just one hole, an airlock occurs, since the liquid is leaving a vessel, air needs to fill the differential, which is means air is flowing in the same port as the liquid is trying to exit.
