James R. Barker - Earth-Shaking Master Salute!

  • If you watched my previous video showing the Cason J. Callaway arriving on the morning of June 28, 2020, you will have noticed the 1004-foot James R. Barker in the background, as she started to move away from the dock at Midwest Energy on the Superior side of the harbor. This video picks up where that video left off. (If you missed the Callaway video, I will include a link at the end of this video.) The Barker had just picked up a load of coal and was starting her journey towards the Duluth shipping canal from where she would head out onto Lake Superior. We see her pass under the John A. Blatnik highway bridge before I relocated my camera to the south pier of the shipping canal to catch the rest of her departure.
As always, the Barker is a crowd favorite due to both her massive size and the sound of her dual horns. We got a special treat from the Barker this time around as she gave us a long and loud master salute, which consists of three long and two short blasts. From my camera position, the salute started out nicely enough... but then got louder and louder as the salute went progressed, because her horns got closer and closer to my position. By the the time it was over, you could swear you were feeling the ground shake. An exaggeration, perhaps, but it goes without saying that the Barker's horns are among the loudest out there!
Of course, hearing a video is nothing like experiencing it in person, but hopefully this footage gives you a rough idea of what it's like. I purposely set "manual" record levels on my camera's microphone when I make these videos, so it doesn't automatically reduce the volume of the blast in the recording. Most cameras automatically limit the volume as their default setting, to make loud noises sound quieter so they fit in "better" with the rest of the recording. In contrast, I want the salutes to sound as loud as they do in relation to other surrounding sounds, for that jump-out-of-your-skin experience when the horn goes off! That's not always the best approach to filming TH-cam videos, but I find it's the most accurate recreation of the audio experience.

The James Barker salute hits me at a deep cellular level. Crying out for those lost on the water and touching my soul.
I actually wept the first time i heard her. I am just outside Duluth and long for the day I hear her call in person.

Had to watch the whole thing. Ever since I was a kid in Mayport, Fla. I loved watching the ships go in and out. Giants so huge and seemingly so close it was like you could reach out and touch them. There's something a little melancholy about a ship as it disappears in the distance heading out to sea. God bless those men who go down to the sea in ships. BM2 USN/ Able Seaman Unlimited 1977-forever.

Every year through my childhood I would visit Sault Ste Marie with my dad. After he passed away it took me 20 years to make it back there. A master salute from James R Barker going past Rotary Park was the first great lakes boat I'd heard in all that time -- and the first my young nephews ever heard. Truly an incredible experience when those blats shake you.

Many years ago, the Barker was out of service for a season or 2 and was moored beside Drummond Island, where my parents lived. So when I was visiting, my dad took me out on our boat, and around the point to visit the Barker and a sister ship beside her. I don't recall for sure which one, I think it was the Mesabi Miner. We idled along by the side of the Barker for her full length, about 10 feet away from that wall of steel. It took a while to go from the bow thrusters to the stern, and when we reached the stern and saw the rudder and props, (the ship was so empty that about 5 feet of the prop blades were above the waterline, I think I recall it being the props and not the rear thrusters, but it's been many years,) well just damn. It was huge! I felt like I was the size of a bug, a very small bug. I'm still amazed at how humans can build things that size that actually move around. The immensity of it all made me want very much to just climb aboard and live there. I have no idea why. It was a very strange feeling.

Beautiful, deep harmony. I would like to know what the horns are. There are two on the pilot house. I would guess one is an "Airchime KM-85", frequency 85 cps, the other an "Airchime KM- 110", frequency 110 cps. It looks like there might be a "Kahlenberg 90 cps Piston Horn" on the front mast. That would make a three note deep bass chord, lovely sound. I have heard this ship live and have heard the horns I mentioned at our whistle toot events. Owned by horn collectors.
