Mississagi Runs Aground In The Holland Canal

  • Got up to Holland at 11am on December 22nd and waiting for the Mississagi to come in. About 30 minutes later she is about 100ft from the end of the pier and I set up my tripod and camera, as she is coming in I see a lot if sand being pushed up. About right in the middle of the canal she starts to slow down very quick, about 5 minutes into recoding she stops. Looking at the back of the ship you can see all the sand being pushed up and the front of the ship is higher up. That means she run aground in the canal. I have never seen a ship run aground and it is crazy how fast they stop. Luckily for the ship, it was able to back up, hug the side of the canal and go on in.
    This is one of 3 videos I got on this day, the next video will be the "Alpena Up Close And Personal" which was taken in Muskegon.
    Also, be prepared for new videos from the Soo, I am going on a trip to watch ships come in before the locks close.
    Hope you enjoy the video

    You might of caught the event that got her the yellow Kiel Strip. This was late December and pulled a light load of grain back down after arriving Jan 8th she was laid up in Sarnia, Ontario awaiting repairs... Never went out this season and watched as they pulled her off under power of two tugs upbound to Soo for scrap on Oct. 8th. Wounder if suffer some sort of structural damage and they decided cost wasn't worth the repairs to 78 year out 15k ton vessel.

      She is one if not thee oldest laker on the great lakes so her life has ran its course. My sister lives in Sarnia and I got to see her back in the spring and into the summer before they towed it away to be scrapped. The old Pelee Island ferry is at the same place and going to be scrapped from running aground so many times I guess and that ferry was built in the late 80's

    Thinking back to that time, the ship had to make the turn at the same place my ship did. The Holland channel has a dog leg turn in it which makes navigating it difficult.

    I don't think she ran aground. It was too close to the south wall to make the turn in the channel. Reversed engines and the bow thrusters were kicking up the sand while she repositioned herself in the channel.

    • @thatguyfrommichigan
      @thatguyfrommichigan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      She didn't, (can't see it on camera) but she was pushing in sand as well and the canal has not been dredged out in a few months and with the past storms, filled the canal with sand and she got suck coming in. I can see how you think that but no.
      I've seen ships come in here before and can tell you, she ran aground. Other ships get just as close and make it in, she was just unlucky and ran aground.

    I do not believe she was aground or in any danger of actually being aground. I believe she was merely stopped to reposition the bow to get out of the lock. If you watch closely you can see the port bow thruster pushing her bow to the starbord.

    • @thatguyfrommichigan
      @thatguyfrommichigan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Someone here has commented something similar to what you said and I see how you think that. (Video doesn't show this well) is that when see stoped its because she hit a sand bar that was pussed in from the storm the day before. Also (not sure if I got it on video) is that see was moving the rudder left and right to "wiggel" the ship out. She did get a bit close to the wall but when see got unstuck, she ugged the right side of the cannal to miss the sand bar.
      They also had a barg come out and remove it.
      I go to Holland a lot and have seen a good amount of ships come here, she took the same line as all the others did. She just had a sand bar in her way.
      Sorry for the long message but hopefully this makes sense.
