What to say...? This is just off the charts excellent, yet another Reiner CSO benchmark recording. A treasure to be preserved for posterity. Thanks.
Even now, years after I heard Reiner lead the CSO in a live performance, when I'm listening to a recording that's more than 60 years old, there are parts of Heldenleben that make the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck stand on end. If ever there were an orchestra, conductor and composer made for each other, the CSO, Reiner and Richard Strauss certainly fill the bill.

Powerful. One can see why Reiner's recordings are reverred. His tempi are perfect. Majestic.

I like Karajan and Kempe at Strauss, but Fritz Reiner has all: great Sound, perfect timing, rythm.

The opening sounds like a whole cello section of Starkers. Was he playing principal?
