We do HV testing of cables using AC voltage source, in VLF (Very Low Frequency) testing we apply 38 kV (phase to earth) voltage on cable rated for 33 kV to test.
1- Lug should be crimped with proper dye. 2- You may use thermography camera to check temperature/hot spot. 3- There should be no loose connection. 4- Inhabiting compounds should be used inside lug before crimping. 5- Jelly should be used between connecting surfaces.
