    If it were mine, I would say it is an SS. For 1968, it would be very difficult for someone to prove otherwise. I have a very early 1967 and I drive it like a bat out of hell. Enjoy your car, don't worry too much about the small things.

    Cool project for sure. Dad’s drag car was a rally green with the white hockey stripes RS/SS 396 four speed car. Sadly that car was sold when I was seven to buy the truck that started his trucking company. Hopefully you’ll find the build sheet for your car or be able to track down some of the previous owners. Good luck with the new project.

    I have a 1967 and a 1968 Camaro, They have been in my family since the mid 70s. There are a few more differences to help spot the year... As you stated a vent window on the 67 and not on 68, side markers on the 68 not on 67, Rear lights are divided on the 68 and not on the 67. Also on the front the standard signal lights are round on the 67 and sort of rectangular shaped on the 68. On a SS the hood lovers are divided on a 68 (like multi ports) and ribbed on the 67. The rally wheel centers on a 67 are flatter than the ones on 68. Inside there are a lot of differences in the dash panels and consoles. The standard seats look very similar, but I think the deluxe and Hounds tooth seats look different (not blessed with those options so not sure). Although there certainly were many options for the stripes on a 68 to look like the 67, most of what I see is the bumble bee stripes on a 67 and D90 stripes on the 68 that start like a Bumble bee stripe then go partially down the sides of the car. Funny how all those very small almost unnoticeable differences made me love both model years so much I am not sure which one to say I like the best. My two cents here on worrying about it being an SS...don't worry about offending any car purist that says you cant make the car what you want it to be, if you were looking to modify a one of kind Z-28 convertible that may be different. The key is to just be honest when you describe what you know and don't know about the car. I got taken years ago by a Lemans faked completely out to be a GTO - An expert showed me the issues. I loved that car anyway and it was scary fast but once I knew what it was...had to be honest about it. But make it your car and don't apologize for that at all.

    Very difficult to determine the options on a 68 Camaro compared to all '67s and many 69's. The 12 bolt was a special order that was also put in 327/275 Camaros, the L30. If the front fenders were original and had the SS badges with the speed nuts, that would be telling because no one would go thru the trouble to pull the fenders off just to add those. Without the original motor, it's a guessing game.

      For real my yellow 68 is a l30m20, makes it a pain to tell. If it was a manual transmission car you could tell from the routing if the speedo cable. But that auto will make it hard. You will have to have a couple pieces of the drivetrain numbers matching to tell.

    the vin # will tell you if is a factory V8 the third # should be a 4 that's an indication that migth be an SS if is a 3 is a 6 cyl car no SS and looking a the diff. I think is out of a 67 Camaro it looks like it has a traction arm on the passenger side they use those on 67 Camaros with mono leaf springs to eliminate wheel hop but that's my opinion I hope it helps nice project! good luck!

    You have an awesome project car that you can drive while you work on it! I am not sure if the build sheet would possibly be behind the passenger door card? I read they did this on some of the 1970-72 Chevelle models. Worth a shot to look there if you have not already.

    Unfortunately, without the original matching numbers engine, there is no way to tell if a 68 is a true SS.

    Doesn’t matter to me. Multi leaf springs, 12 bolt rear end and emblems is the only way I know unless you can find the build sheet somewhere in the car.

      who cares. make it a SS! It's your car. Make a dream come true.

  • @josephfine3394
    @josephfine3394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's all rotted out around the rear window track, under the chrome belt and glass, which is why the package tray area and trunk fills with water. That's very time-con$uming to repair! They all rot like that. Trunk lid and weatherstrip is shot as well. But the first-gens are all like that. Out west, they rust from the top down. Go to a car show and study one of the first-gens. You'll see what your extra parts are for, and where they go.

  • @burtonleon2950
    @burtonleon2950 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It doesn't appear to be correct for an SS. It's a small block heater core, which if it was an SS 350 automatic, would be a Powerglide. The console shows to be a 3 speed auto, which would mean a 396. It looked like monoleafs too. But anything can get changed over 50 years. Great to already have a 12 bolt.

    There are three things right off the bat that indicate it is not a real SS.
    Mono leaf rear suspension, Does not appear to have SS gauges and Doesn’t have correct engine . Just my first observations
