As a seven-year-old in 1963, I absolutely fell in love with Rowlf. As far as I was concerned, it should have been called _The Rowlf Show! (Featuring Jimmy Dean)._ If memory serves, Rowlf's first appearance was supposed to be a one-shot guest spot, but the audience loved him so much, he was booked for a second... then a third... and was finally officially given a permanent slot on the show. I think Dean set the standard for human/Muppet interaction. He never failed to speak and react to Rowlf as another reasoning being, and seemed to get a genuine kick out of playing second banana to a glove puppet. Also, he not only allowed, but actively encouraged, Jim Henson to toss in a few ad libs. Ya gotta respect a show host who is so generous in giving the spotlight to someone else week after week. Dean recognized Henson's genius and promoted the heck out of him.
