when mario does a double jump, the game sets his vertical speed to 52 + speed/4, so if we have a lot of speed we can jump really high but, if we dont want the speed after the jump, we can press b to dive, which caps our speed to 48 (which is much smaller) while having no effect on the vertical speed, so we continue to go mostly straight up

I knew that lots of horizontal speed can make you jump really high because of how Y speed is calculated for double jumps, but I never knew how the horizontal speed was stopped (or I guess not entirely stopped, but instantly changed to 48). So can you do this "super high jump with low horizontal speed" thing anywhere by just pressing A and B on the same frame for the double jump?

Watching speedruns of this great game makes me learn how to speedrun! I even beat the game with 1 star because of the speedruns... They help me alot.
I like to think that they originally saved more than 2 frames, but stalled so that they could get the funny number.
