I am an eighteen-year-old that has a vision of becoming a wedding dress designer. You have emboldened me to draft my first sleeve. Thank you so much and if I do in fact started this business, I owe all of my credit to you❤
Your drafting videos are so thorough, and I truly appreciate how much has gone into these. Your instructions are always spot on. Learning basic drafting is not something I thought I'd ever do, or make use of, but here I am, following your instruction, and my sewing skills continue to improve. Thank you so very much!
I am so glad that this is helpful! Yes, these videos take up to 40 hrs to create and put together, so I am glad someone is getting value from it! Check out the video that I published today - some fun pattern drafting from a reference picture - lovely design!
Holy moly, one of the mysteries of the world has been solved for me!! 🤗 3:20 I couldn't help have a little giggle at my own observation: show me you wear a lot of t-shirts without telling me you wear a lot of t-shirts.. I'm getting the same tell tale tan line on my upper arms! ❤️🤗
Wonderful! I've watched a lot of tutorials and tried a lot of tutorials. And there's a difference. Many times you'll see hundreds of comments praising a video without actually following the instructions of the video, which end up being rubbish. This video was clear; simple enough for someone who's never ever made a sleeve. I used this sleeve tutorial to make a perfect bishop sleeve!
This is a three part video. I only found two. Someone help me please. I'm allergic to sewing machine. What i sew I sew by hand. That's not much. I'm here to UNDERSTAND sleeves. :D New subscriber and very happy to have found this channel.
This is the BEST and SIMPLEST demonstration I've ever seen for a sleeve. I would have loved to see how you actually attach the sleeve to the garment, using the notches.
This video made me go back and recheck my shoulder width measurement using the seams on an existing shirt and redraft my knit bodice block and wow!! I was way off! It made a huge difference 🎉
Hello, hello! Yes, that is one of the measurements that can be tricky between what we "think" is the right shoulder width and what actually is, especially that it is hard to determine sometimes where the arm start and shoulder ends, same with shoulder slope - another measurement that can be tricky. But I am glad you're moving forward!
I followed your video on how to change a regular sleeve into a puffy one. BUT I should have watched this video first! I had no idea where to put the notches and where the gathers should end, etc. So yes it was a nice puffy sleeve but they looked funny after I sewed them into the bodice. Now I know! Thank you for explaining so clearly. My next sleeves will be better. You made this video two years ago, but it’s timeless and very helpful.Thank you.
I am getting a bit creative. I am adding a sleeve to a sleeveless swing top. I drew a total blank on how to draft the sleeve. I searched your channel, found this video and downloaded the basic sleeve block. Shazam! But, I still feel like I need my hand held. So, I am going to watch how to sew a t-shirt while I draft this. Thanks for being a wonderful sewing friend.
Oh, I think I missed this comment somehow... about adding a sleeve to a sleeveless top... a lot of times the width of the strap isn't the "normal" width as of the shoulder seam for a sleeved garment, so when drafting a sleeve for the sleeveless top you will probably need to add a bit of extra height to the top of the sleeve - at least that's how I see it in my head... here's a video about 5 different sleeves, including a bishop sleeve, and there is also a reference sheet for this video on google drive :) - th-cam.com/video/LpcNE_dl0l8/w-d-xo.html
I truly appreciate all of your videos, they are very informative and learn alot from them. Its so refreshing that its not the typical "fabric haul" ect that others show, not that there is anything wrong with that. So huge thank you for putting so much into these videos for us.
You are a life saver! Thank you for this. Just used this tutorial to make a sleeve, when I finished the measurements were PERFECT! Wish I stumbled on this video long time ago.❤❤❤ Sending a biiggggggg hug.
You explained things so well. I was wondering how to measure, and what to measure and how to deft a sleeve. Now I want to learn how to make other kinds of sleeves like Puffy and wider, flutter, etc sleeves
Thank you so much for sharing your videos they are so inspiring and easy to follow I pray your Chanel will continue to grow and grow and inspire more people the world need more people like you God blessed you abundantly.
OMG this video is incredible! Incredibly detailed as always. I'm going to a wedding in the Middle East and I want to draft some long sleeves for a modest dress.
Thanks for demystifying the... about armholes. I remember it was what made me to run away from learning more, some years back. You gave it a simple Math. I appreciate your videos.
Perfect! I can't thank you enough. I went over & over your explanation and dove in and my sleeve fit perfectly! I was amazed 😊 I am making a second blouse but changing the sleeve to a bell. I did the exact same except added a 2" flare cutting the bottom of the sleeve pattern up to the armpit indicator line. Who would of thought it was so easy! Hugs and thank you again!❤❤
Thank you for showing us the video. I love the way you cut the pattern and the fabrics also for sewing very neat and clean love it. Watching everyday from Seattle Washington. Happy Valentine’s to all mothers and keep safe everyone❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Alisa!! I've been following your tutorials for a few months now and I'm feeling much more comfortable with sewing and building my confidence. I love your work and I greatly appreciate your time and energy putting these tutorials together!!! Much love to you!! ❤❤❤
Drawing the sleeve on flat paper seems wayyyy better than designing it on folded paper..!! Now I'm going to redraw sleeve on no folded paper. #YESS#THANKS#🙂🙂❤❤
Thank you so much. I was looking for a video like this, clear, easy to understand. Now, I am going to watch all your videos, and delete all others. Hope you will teach us how to draft the patterns of latest fashion.
Wow! First of all, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge like this with us! I cannot imagine how much effort has gone into making these wonderful videos - I have only just discovered you after a very long search. I was wondering: can you use this same sleeve-drafting technique with stretch fabric?
What if someone has a forward slouching shoulder? My front armacye is shorter than most factory garments. And the back armscye is much longer. You're the best! thanks
Such a great help, you gave clear instructions that were easy to understand. Sleeves have always been intimidating, but this makes me want to give them another try.
Your videos are so informative and detailed! The most clearly explained video I have come across! I drew up my sleeve pattern and I’m excited to have a trial run! Thanks so much :) Do you have any suggestions of how to draw up a sleeve for a square neckline (square back and front) there is nothing to anchor the sleeve but the armpit but that is sewn, the top of the sleeve is kinda just hanging on the shoulder for dear life😅 Thanks a million :)
This is fantastic! Even though my English is not 100% and we take mm/cm/m instead of inches here, your video is easy to follow. I do have a question for you. 5/8 inches = 1.5875 centimeters. Does it matter whether you charge one mm more or less? Or would you rather calculate up or down? Not sure if this will affect the fit. Thank you very much for all your expertise and time you shared with us!👏 🙂
Maria, hi! I actually do most of my drafting in cm's (it is so much easier to do the math, as I am European myself) but do vids in inches, as I live in USA. So... there will be a tad bit of a difference, between 150 mm and 158mm, but I just took in between, 155mm, so between 1.5cm and 1.6cm. Hope this helps!
@@ThoughtfulCreativity Hi Alisa, thanks for your reply. After watching your video I saw that your ruler was also in cm.😊 And from a previous conversation I know that you are also from Europe. I don't find inches easy, but your tip helped me a lot! Big thanks for everything!! 😘
A lot of rulers have inch measurements on the bottom. I found it easier to do my measurements in cm and flip my ruler when you have to add a certain amount. Imperial is a very janky system of measurement, but it'll do for little things like this
Hi Alisa!! Your tutorials are always so amazing.. Your explanations are so clear.. My question to you is, are a cap sleeve & tulip sleeve figured the same way?? Reason I ask is because I mostly wear sleeveless tops/dresses because I sweat so so much.. I’d appreciate your help…. 💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
I made tulip sleeves off of this pattern. Worked beautifully! (I followed The Closet Historian for her video on converting a basic sleeve into tulip sleeves!)
Alisa thank you so very much! I love your tutorials, very helpful! I’m trying to add sleeves to a knit top and I have a question, would this formula for a sleeve cap height work too for the knit fabric? I greatly appreciate everything you do!❤️
Marina, hello there! Are you comparing the bicep line that you drafted with the armhole measurement? You have to compare the completed sleeve curve to the armhole measurement - as that is what is sewn into the armhole. The straight line will always measure less than a curve.
Hi, love your channel, i love sewing but for me personally its hard to understand how to draft patterns for plus sized people without actually seeing, my question is can you videos on how to draft bodice patterns for plus-sized person like myself who has more of an apple shape top please, most drafts are done for persons who are pear shaped, hour glass shaped, would really appreciate it thanks .
Very well made video. I do have a question though, because I don't really understand how your extra length on the sleeve pattern is able to be sewed on the torso part which is shorter. So you marked the spot in the middle on top and then the two marks on each side, one on the front and one on the back part, but as you have mentioned, the curve is longer on the sleeve pattern than the round opening in the torso part for the sleeve is. How does that work without getting the fabric to get sort of overlap at some part?
I have just discovered your channel and find your tutorials are the best. I can understand a little bit being a beginner. I do have one question about measure of sleeve. Why did you increase or decrease inches on the side of the sleeve.? Your instructions are beautiful but I'm not following when you are drawing pattern but you do not give explanation why this action is done. I really would like to learn drafting but I need explanation please.
I did watch again. I understand now increase and decrease was for movement of the sleeve and to be fitted properly into bodice sleeve space. You showed that arm has to move freely. I learn by mistakes. I'm a beginner.
Teresa, please go and take a look at the video tab on my channel, the most recent video shows you how to make a jacket from your bodice block and sleeve + many tutorials on how to draft tops and you can use your bodice block for it.
What happened to the extra fabric (the added ease)? Won't it be a fold somewhere, if the sleeve is slightly bigger than the armhole? I was hoping you'd show the process of sewing the sleeve onto the bodice and explain where/how that ease ends up.
I do have basic sewing using patterns to make garments. I bought a sweatshirt and the arm seam is on top. I bought the sweatshirt very over sized, so I do have plenty of room to spare. The arm length is 4 inch inches to long. I need help to switch the sleeves so seam side is down.
hi alisa i followed your tutorial for the basic bodice and the sleeve but i was left wirh a lot of ease how do i reduce this ease i ended up having to gather it in thank you love your turorials
Catherine, I have already responded to your comment with the same answer - just like said in this video - reduce the length of the cap height, so the sides of the sleeve again, measure and repeat until you get the measurement that you want.
I wanted to ask whether we should leave seam allowance same as other parts of bodice while cutting armholes or it should be right same as our bodice block pattern
Im a little lost. Im not sure if im missing the part or what, but why is the 2 inches added to bicep line? Is it considered ease or seam allowance or is it just a standard?
That's how I personally draft the sleeve for my little one as well, but I haven't looked too much into the "by the book methods of children wear" construction, I mainly use the same methods as for the adults taking in considerations difference between a body of a young person/kid vs full grown adult.
