This set is really begging to be doubled: buy 2 and make the dock have 2 cranes; nearly double the length of the ship so it can hold 4 containers; make the building 12 studs deep with removable levels; have a longer boardwalk; and have a wider beach area.
6:08 The cluster of buildings shown directly to the left of the crane on that stickered map has already been released: it's 60417 Police Speedboat and Crooks' Hideout. The shapes match perfectly, and the Crooks' Hideout even has the Technic pin-holes on its side for connectivity to this Harbor set. Plus, it works well with the Harbor becauso the Crooks' Hideout is disguised to look like shipping containers! 😊
I feel like you being unsponsored gives you the freedom to give your real, true opinion, and that's what makes your reviews the most fan friendly! And I always appreciate your integrity.
This is the first City set at 100$ that I want on day one and am willing and happy to pay full price. Maybe it's nostalgia for a harbor set I had as a kid... I think it's a good set. Thanks for the great review as always. 😊
To address your concerns at 13:15, the best set to complete the play patterns is the 2017 Cargo Terminal (60169). The trailer beds are compatible with these shipping containers, and the crane truck is exactly what you need to move shipping containers from the Harbor's crane to a truck or train. Perhaps one of the implied sets on the dock map is something similar to 60169?
I feel like this review captured some of the "classic" feel of Jang's older reviews that got me hooked on his channel. Cant quite put my finger on what it is, but I know it when I see it.
One thing I really love about modern Lego city is that any and all shipping containers are interchangeable between trains, this boat, trucks, ETC. just like real life!
The set that goes well is 60169. The containers can be put in the border slot by crane, picked up by the telehandler and loaded onto truck and trailer. Now I didn't like this set because it seems to be missing pieces. The ships bridge seems unfinished with this open design (since you got access from the top) maybe a little crane on the ship would have been nice, or a bigger ship with 3-4 containers would made more sense without a crane to be a pure container ship. The small cargo storage at the front of the ship is designed for the crate with the 3 fishes. It's not mentioned in the instructions but it's the only place it fits within. Yes, a truck at this price would have been nice. Since I'm saying the set is missing parts: The tavern should be inverted. The small piece that angles the tavern towards the bay should be inverted so the tavern would face the other way, making more room in and on the set. The only part missing would be another chain for the pier area. The tavern roof could have been completed in putting a 2x10 plate instead of the 2x1 piece. Small things that add up.
Nice playset. I´m sure kids will figure out their own fantasy ways of using it, as it gives enough room for harbour adventures. Wonderfully detailed review as always. Thumbs up for all your charity work!
I love how your full opinion critical points and all can end up winning me over. The way this is an intersection between multiple spaces, the sea, transport trucks or trains, the town and the beach make it feel like a great starting point for a city that you can rebuild and add to and spread out in multiple directions. Your right that it's a shame the crane is so manual and single use without an implied area to load to a truck that drives under but perhaps that jet sky o ly needed to be delivered as far as the rental place. :)
Excellent review! At first glance I expected lots of praise for this set: it looks great, and by today's standards it seems pretty great value. Just by the looks of it, I wouldn't have been surprised if this had been a €150 set. But it's not all sunshine, and I think you bring some excellent points about the playability. Seems like this set tried to be a jack of all (or at least several) trades, but a master of none. They really should turn this into a harbour subtheme, with more sets to expand on this.
As someone who does not like modern lego this seems like a Surprisingly solid set that value wise seems pretty alright too. I do find as things are right now things seem a little cramped. I wonder if it would have been better to have the recreation area as a separate set.
I agree, should have been split into 2 sets and more budget given to the whole unloading process. Maybe they could have thrown in a truck like Jang suggested.
This is nice and I like the modularity. I think I would habe preferred it split into 2 sets though: One with the ship and the crane (and maybe some additional cargo stuff) and one with the more leisurely stuff.
I hope Lego will release more harbor sets that can fit with this. Would love to see a little transport hub with a forklift and a truck to carry the containers to the customers.
Such a nice total package, this is already on sale in high street shops at about half the price of the equivalent sized licensed set, £75. Pretty but also very efficient use of parts to make 1200 bricks go a long way. Well done Lego. Maybe it helps that I grew up near small boat cranes and such, so this feels very familiar.
A port with a bigger crane, Truck, and small coast guard boat and a seperate big $160 cargo ship would be much better imo. This set just seems way too busy/cramed. Still glad we got a port set after a long time tho
i like the hands on offloading with this. it's nice when things work by just pressing one button or turning one gear to unlatch, but as a play feature, having to do it yourself makes it much better imo.
I'm so glad LEGO are going back to making good city stuff. This set has its clear shortcomings but those sacrifices make sense to bring so much for the price (for lego anyway). The set begs to be finished off but doesn't force you to pay a huge price to play and encourages your creativity.
Great review as always!☺️ The building on the map that you mentioned you hope is a good industrial one is indeed already out, is the Police speedboat and Crook's hideout 60417. I have the set and as I was looking at it above just clicked and realised that what's on the map next to this.☺️ They look nice together, but yeah unfortunately it doesn't gives more help to unload the cargo. I was thinking of having a road plate in the back and use a forklift for the containers.
Personally, I feel as though the restaurant half of the set could have been replaced with more industrial setting in order to complete the set. Having some kind of truck to load the containers on would have made much more sense so one could transload containers from ship to truck. The restaurant half of the set could have been used as a sort of expansion or addon to the rest of a fully fleshed out sea port set. Either way, I'm sure Lego did their research and kids loved the set the way it was produced and released. Great review as always Jang!
One of the expansion sets is actually already released! The Crook's Hideout set from January's wave is the structure to the west (according to the map) and even includes container crates of the same colours. To the north there's a Park (also hinted at in the Sightseeing bus) and there's an unreleased Cargo truck set seen on the Burger Truck's box art which would thematically make sense.
I really like the set and the boat, but I'm an adult. The fact there wasn't a $30 set with a ramp that connects to this set and a little flatbed truck is really disappointing. One of the best things LEGO ever did was make that train ramp piece, so much playability. This set needs something like that.
Having just re-built the big freight ship from my beloved Launch n Load seaport, I may adopt some of the build techniques here to make the build a bit more modern. Great review as always Jang!
Looks like a nice set that could be add to a city layout with lots of changes like train tracks more containers the sky is the limit. Thanks for the review. Its an interesting set to modify (especially the harbor) the rest is ok
This reminds me a lot of set 7823 from 1986 that I have, however it takes containers from a train section instead of a ship, but actually goes over a road, so the derrick (although not on wheels) can offload the cargo straight onto a truck. It has A LOT OF CLEARANCE and even has a person operating it. Until I looked up this set that I own on Brickset just now - I had no idea that it was that old - I thought it was about 1992 or 1993. This is how this new crane should have been. It goes side-to-side on a guided rail. I love everything else about this new set otherwise.
I love this set so much because it reminds me of the 2014 Cargo train (which I got after seeing your review at the time :) and I feel I need to get this as a companion piece.
I think providing play opportunities not just related to freight, but also city life and leisure in a harbor set was an interesting choice that also makes it have a more gender-neutral appeal than past editions of this concept did.
I think they tried to fit to much into one set. If they split up the cargo area and marina/rental + beach, I think they would have been albe to create two sets with more playablity. The cargo area could have gotten a more playable crane with a truck or something else to complete the chain of play. And the marina could have gotten a bigger beach and maybe a larger docking area for a tiny boat (rental or fishing boat). That way both sets could function more on their own and you could ofcourse still connect them.
How would a truck complete the chain of play? Where does the truck go next? In this set, the small craft are being delivered to the rental store, so you can play with them all the way from delivery to rental & use... seems like a more complete chain to me.
Normally I agree with you but I think kids like my 7 year old son wouldn’t care too much about the missing play features. He would use his imagination to fill in the blanks. I love all of the little details in this set.
This set is still pretty cool and all but my favorite harbor will always be set 7994! Since it including a roadway for trucks to load/offload their cargo to the ship. If they managed to reimagine that set with the crane design from this current one then it would make for a great looking, and more interactive harbor. I think it would have been better for LEGO to focus more on the industrial side for this set and then introduce the tourist side for another set that could be attached onto it.
I find it interesting that the cargo containers are the same style as the containers from the previous (now retired) cargo train with the loop on top for a crane with a hook. I would think they would have used the newer, current production, cargo train containers that grab the containers from the sides of the top plate. It makes me wonder if the next cargo train set will interact with this.
I like the look of the gantry crane and It's the most realistic choice of crane design for doing container work like this, but I think they maybe should have done a more conventional boom crane that could rotate on its base. this would let it get both containers without moving the ship and reach the areas that the current design couldn't. It could also free up some more space on the dock itself.
The ship feels unfinished and I think a dock like this should be industrial only. The 2006 harbor set was fantastic and would have been a great template for this set. They should’ve doubled the size of the ship, made the crane actually functional, add a truck or maybe even train tracks under the crane, and left the civilian stuff completely out of it. Just my opinions!
"I can't wait to see how there gonna expand this set!" The cope is real. And not in the mean meme way, I very much know this feeling! I too often wanted to believe brands and big companies are just teasing us with a bad product for the next product. But we all know in out hearts that that's not whats gonna happen 😔
I like the containers seem to be the same size as for the train set that my daughter loves to play with. Might pick this up for Christmas when it is on offer somewhere.
Not sure but the the area for crane to offload looks wide enough (6 studs) to lay some RR track. A train car could back in there and (if there's height clearance) unload on to a RR car.
I think I might get two of these and modify it with some parts from the display stand of the orient express and tiny train wheels from the Christmas train polybag to get it to move side to side then connect it up with my cargo trains.
Also this seems way smaller but way better it's so much more dense with so much detail The bit I love most is the stairway in the front cos the original had similar but it was basically a plate covering a moulded hole
It feels unfinished. You'd expect a truck to handle the containers instead of the big ship constantly shipping recreational boats. This set tries to be too much and fail at almost all goals it was hoping to achieve
Really hope we get another larger scale cargo ship at some point again. I'm pleasantly surprised with how this one looks though, better then I thought.
Ave Jang. Thank you for this honest revieuw. Somehow this set looks Dutch to me 😁 and yes, there should be more to do in this set. It looks like they combined two halfbuild sets and wanted ut to work. 😂
Could a flatbed truck back up underneath the crane perpendicular to the ship? That way you don’t have to rotate the containers and the crane can fully service the truck.
I wish the random dude in orange should have medium legs to suggest he's a younger lad we get three different leg sizes. Even saves LEGO a little plastic. Needed to shift the "beach" budget over to the crane to make it longer and able to offload to a truck. Hopefully there are some other sets coming that will complete this, like a police set with a warehouse robbery where they are stealing a truck with similar containers (a cop on a motorcycle so the budget can go the good stuff). The set is so close to being a good solid set.
Part of me feels like this one set should have been two separate sets. Have a single pier entertainment set with shops, beach, boardwalk, etc. And have a separate set featuring a larger shipping yard with a more functional crane, ship, and a truck/train to transfer the cargo onto. Thankfully, LEGO can be taken apart and modified 😁
Another thing is having a beach next to a dock doesn't feel as safe to me there's gonna be a lot of big ships coming in but it's still a nice little build to come with it
this set reminds me of a level from super mario sunshine! makes me wish that the super mario line got minifigs instead of those oversized checkout scanners
I think it would've been better to have the boat and crane as its own set, and the beach and restaurant as its own set. Or perhaps if the boat was not a cargo ship but a fishing boat, then it would make more sense to have the boat haul the catch to the restaurant.
This set is really begging to be doubled: buy 2 and make the dock have 2 cranes; nearly double the length of the ship so it can hold 4 containers; make the building 12 studs deep with removable levels; have a longer boardwalk; and have a wider beach area.

Wow! Im totally gobsmacked by this set! The theming, aesthetic, builds are all on point! And not insanely bank breaking! Awesome!!!
The crooks hideout that realeased earlier this year is meant to connect to this set it has the connection points built in
Oh. Weak.
@@JANGsLEGOreviews why is that weak?
Because of what I said in the video. This set needs an expansion that adds to the cargo play.
@@JANGsLEGOreviews Fair enough
Looks like a really fun play set.
The small blue boat is a throwback to set 6508. A set I still have from when I was a kid.

I love the 90s equivalent of this set. Those “platform” docks were a lot bigger but I appreciate the brick built details on this.
I can listen to these reviews forever. :) So calm to listen and fun to watch. Thanks, Jang. :") 🎉

Ha, I said basically the same thing! I agree completely, I’m much more interested in the building, dock, and pedestrian area than the crane and boat.
Yeah, one set dedicated to cargo and another for beach and tourist

This is a great play set. Ida loved this as a kid! I would have wanted the crane to shift cargo off the dock to a truck though.

I think it would have been better for LEGO to focus more on the industrial side for this set and then introduce the tourist side for another set that could be attached onto it.
Wow, I kinda overlooked this but it's really great. Appreciate the review, Jang.
I hope Lego decides to make mini fig scale Mario sets in the future. This set reminds me of Ricco Harbor from Super Mario Sunshine!

Hopefully there are some other sets coming that will complete this, like a police set with a warehouse robbery where they are stealing a truck with similar containers (a cop on a motorcycle so the budget can go the good stuff). The set is so close to being a good solid set.
6:20 - that’s 100% set 60417 Police Speedboat and Crooks’ Hideout.
Another thing is having a beach next to a dock doesn't feel as safe to me there's gonna be a lot of big ships coming in but it's still a nice little build to come with it
This set feels half finished. I love harbor and have harbor themed sets going back to the 80s. However it could be good bones for some mods
Instead of putting a restaurant next to a commercial port they could have put in a road and a truck and it would have been perfect 😅
The blue boat is a small copy of 6508 ❤️
this set reminds me of a level from super mario sunshine!
makes me wish that the super mario line got minifigs instead of those oversized checkout scanners
I think it would've been better to have the boat and crane as its own set, and the beach and restaurant as its own set. Or perhaps if the boat was not a cargo ship but a fishing boat, then it would make more sense to have the boat haul the catch to the restaurant.
Compared to more recent sets, this actually looks like its worth the 110 price tag both piece count wise and amount of stuff you get wise.
@jang could it be, that the Fan boat is a redo of the lego set 6508 from the nineties?
The mechanic reminds me of jack from bioshock, fitting for a water set
