      I think even more than that, at a point before he re-enacts his idea, Sal's wife mentions that she doesn't get why men guard their feelings....And then Sal is suddenly expressive, passionate, etc,...Now she's thinking "Was this what I wanted?"

    From IMDB trivia (not mine):
    Director George Sidney was so taken with the talent of Ann-Margret that when the film was edited he went to Columbia's executives and proposed the opening and closing bumpers that would showcase her. They refused to pay for any additional filming, so Sidney rented the studio and crew at his own expense. He then asked the composer and lyricist to come up with a title song. He filmed Ann-Margret's skirt-flipping, hair-tossing rendition of that song six months after principal photography was completed -- at a cost of $60,000, which was repaid to Sidney after the movie. And Ann-Margret became a sensation.
    Thank you, thank you, Mr. Sidney, a thousand times over. These add-ons lift this movie to the next level of knowing satire. And helped to lift A-M into the stratosphere of public recognition. Not that she wouldn't have gotten there eventually on sheer talent without this early boost.

    the reason why she sounds bad in the first half is because she was immature with an unhealthy obsession with a star. her singing voice is supposed to reflect that. in the 2nd half (the end of the movie), she realizes her actual boyfriend is what's most important to her and that she wasted her time fangirling over some jerk singer who could care less about her. she matured more, and so did her singing.

Even her makeup is more mature. I'm so glad because all I saw on Mad Men was the first half and I couldn't figure out how Ann Margret could have possibly gotten work in musicals when her voice sounded so godawful. Now I know it was on purpose.

    My gosh this lady is absolutely mesmerizing to watch! I LOVE how her voice represents her immaturity at the beginning, and how it sounds much more mature and controlled by the end; she had such a unique sound and was capable of being versatile with her voice as well. I also respect her for being willing to sing that intro in a way that would make many people assume that she has a bad/annoying voice right off the bat. But she knew the truth, she knew she could do much more with her voice, and she wasn’t about to let the fear of other people’s first impression of her singing stop her from performing her pretty little heart out anyway. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have done it at all.
    I don’t think these clips would’ve been as intriguing to watch if they had been perfectly polished. I’m a professional singer as well, so I really appreciate and respect her artistry in these clips. I love reading the comments on here of those who also picked up on the clever directing of the intro singing vs. the singing at the end. Kudos❤️👍🏻🎶👏🏻

    it was 1963, I was 6 years old, and my mom took me to the movies for the first time in my life. This is literally the first film scene I ever saw. I was mesmerized by Ann-Margaret, and fell in love with the movies. I can't describe how overwhelmed I was by her. The only thing that comes close was the summer of '77 when my friends dragged me against my will to see this movie they had seen the night before. It was called Star Wars. That endless shot of the Star Destroyer passing overhead blew me away in the same way. Thanks Ann-Margaret for the magic!

  • @p994able
    @p994able 6 ปีที่แล้ว +175

    Lol the reason why she sings like this in the first half is because it symbolizes that her character in the movie (Kim McAfee) was immature. Because throughout the movie as a fifteen year old, she blows off her boyfriend Hugo for Conrad Birdie's attention, and looses her mind whenever he's around, fan girling over him. Picture a five year old fussing because she doesn't get a doll that she wants. Ann Margret is a fifteen year old crying over the man she wants and can't have, who by the way, has been drafted into the army.
    Her voice sounds a bit more mature in the second part because she has realized that Birdie isn't all that, and Hugo matters more. She has matured, and therefore is kindly yet sadly wishing him farewell, no longer "boo-hooing" over him.

This performance was a phenomenan and Ann Margeret was the hottest woman on the planet when this came out. And that's saying a lot with the beauties who were around at the time.. A true triple threat talent, incredibly sexy but sweet too. Why do you think Weiner put this on Mad Men?. He always covered the iconic moments of these times. Sorry millenials. To set the record straight, Ann-Margret had just turned 22 when this was released, so she was 21 when it was filmed. She's playing a high school girl (hence the high voice), so no more than three or four years younger than she really was. She looks older to us because of the old-fashioned styles, and because teenage girls back then tried to look like grown-ups (as opposed to today, when grown-ups try to look like teenagers).

    I'll confess: it's extremely difficult for me to watch this video. It pulls me so thoroughly back into the early 1960s that I feel confused and disoriented. I have to step outside to reacquaint myself what century I presently live in. In human years this was a long time ago but in reality time this JUST happened not even a second ago. There's sadness and relief at the same instance. My parents were alive, I had no real problems and there was nothing but an eternal bright future of discovery ahead of me. I guess this video hurts a little to watch. I used to think it was cool.
