He knows his colleagues are animals. However, he blames Megan instead of telling her why, he just gets angry. This entire show is about a man who abused and neglected by his parents and then raped as a young teen. The entire show is about a damaged, broken man trying to look like everyone else and trying to live like everyone else. He can't. The reason this is so unsettling for him is that she is in control sexually in this situation and that makes him uncomfortable. He always wants to be in control because sexual abuse victims struggle their whole lives with issues of control after being controlled sexually by someone against their will. I've watched the entire show 5 times through and while we think that it is about how women were oppressed in the 60s, it is really about how terribly he treats women because he has no experience where anyone ever treated a woman with respect, and he was very injured by women in his childhood.

She killed it, the pose, movements,. Costume, liittle details were all on point, and the cringy part of not knowing that Don's soul was literally walking out and killing at that moment.. great scene! And my man Roger's conversation with Jane. Roger: "Why don't you sing like him" Jane: "Why don't you look like him"
+Suzanne Moriarty I think she is hated because she had it too easy in a way. Every single character on Mad men had to struggle to get where they are. She has it all, and it's very easy for her to get things that she didn't even want in the first place - being a copywriter, getting married to her boss. It is handed to her on a plate. When you see how other people on the show like peggy or joan try to climb the ladder in many different ways and what they had to face to obtain what they wanted - you kind of can't help to dislike megan a little. There is this dimension of unfairness to how her character gets its way.
According to Jessica Pare, she was never sure where to go as an actress until she simply decided to be over-the-top when and where it seemed promising. Happily, the producers of MAD MEN saw the possibilities she brought to the part of Megan Draper.
Not the greatest actress, but apparently she rehearsed this scene like crazy because she was anxious about both the singing and the dancing, and I think she nailed it. And the way the guests reacted - great scene.
When he yelled at her after this stellar, loving, jaw-dropping gift to him I was not proud of Don. It really has to be about him, his ego, all eyes on him, all the time. If I were Don, I would be so proud and flattered....knowing I have the sexiest, most talented woman in the room/world and am the luckiest SOB alive. Damn, Don!
Of course he's going to yell at his new wife who does a whore dance in front of his colleages and their wives. He wants to be proud of her instead of knowing that the other men only want to fxck her like a piece of meat.
@@theuofc IDK, I'd want to show her off a bit. I mean, she wasn't scantily clad, with a barely-there outfit doing a striptease. It's only cringeworthy because we know Don was embarrassed and didn't want a party in the first place.
Indiana Deckard Solo Is Don really an i trovert though? He‘s very good with people and enjoys it too. He has moments where he‘d rather be alone but I‘d say he‘s neither a full introvert nor extrovert.
She's hated, because near the end of their relationship she starts being a bitch. She's more lovely to Don than he deserves and I enjoy her character before the relationship goes really downhill. But nearing the melancholic end to their relationship and particularly in their last encounter (at least I think it was their last) when Don is signing papers and decides to give her a million dollars or whatever it was... she... well, her character seemed to change in an instant. Before that everything was definitely rough, but the relationship came to an end because she wanted it to. And Don was obviously not reciprocating things she needed or wanted from him, but it was nevertheless something she wanted. At the end their relationship almost felt like an "I love you, but we're on different paths and I don't think it'll work out. But we should stay friends." And then all of a sudden she's blaming Don for a lot of shit and saying her life is ruined and he's the one who ruined it and that she hated him. It was a fucking out of nowhere change of mood and it tainted her character in my eyes. It felt like I had skipped like 5 episode worth of a character arc when I saw that scene for the first time. I remember checking back to see if I had accidentally skipped an episode or something. I still don't hate her character perse, but that era of her character is definitely something I dislike a lot. I enjoy her personality, but I do wish they had taken everything in different directions. Also though, I reckon people were displeased at Don ditching the doctor and marrying Megan so suddenly. I think the doctor and Dons relationship could have potentially been an even more interesting one. She was more of a match for Don. Megan didn't really know what she was getting herself into unfortunately. But maybe that makes for better TV.
@@BrokenGodEnt I don’t blame her character honestly, throughout their whole relationship she’s pretty loving and supportive to Don even when in season 6 he begins to shut her out completely, and then he makes her quit her successful job as an actress on a popular show to go to LA together and salvage their relationship but he ends up not going and lies to her basically saying he’d rather spend most of his time without her so personally I understand why her attitude towards him changed especially since time had passed and probably thought more about what he did, I do agree though the writers should’ve delved deeper a bit more from her perspective.
Roger & Jane lmfao. Don & his forced smile look like he wants the floor to open up & swallow him. Their marriage was shallow & baseless from the beginning. She didn't know how much this would embarrass him & he didn't know how not to crush her when she thought she was doing a good thing.
@Bolizen Don has never liked parties, at best he tolerates them. Having a big celebration like this for his birthday was insensitive considering his mother died giving birth to him. So really this wasn't that nice. I think Megan just wanted to show off and wasn't gonna take no for an answer.
everyone blamed her for everything ,but in the end I didn't care what happened to DICK , I mean don. I would have liked to see what happened to everyone else though
@@thesupreme950 They knew plenty about one another. Later on in the episode they talk about how it's not even his real birthday. In that setting, time period, and that particular group of people,as well as Don's personality, it's the definition of cringe. Not by today's standards, but in that era for sure.
Who likes their girlfriend/wife to be on a public display sexually ? Don would have more appreciated if it was only him in the room and not with "friends-colleagues"
Someone explained it to me like this: imagine your boss's new sexy wife who is MUCH younger than him invites you and all your colleagues to a party at their home, then her birthday gift to him is a really grindy lap dance to WAP in the center of the living room while you all have to watch it. With the spirit of how people were supposed to behave in the 60s, that's essentially what happened here
Its the start of the end of meghan and Don. She’s so young and the whirling romance they have and the sudden marriage is so romantic at then end of the previous season but we all knew don was gonna, as he always does, sabotage everything but to be fair not because he’s a bad person but he has patterns which stem from so much trauma in his younger life.. Poor Meghan doesn’t even realize what she stepped into then. Don hates this, hates the surprise bday party. To this day that episode and this moment at the time became so iconic. I’ve rewatched mad men recently and it still remains one of my favorite series. Watching it older and more mature than time even tho I understood and loved the characters, I now fully grasp what the characters. The in depth analysis and how amazing, real the writing is. Sometimes you love them sometimes you hate them but you always understand them ❤ Im always so nostalgic about this show its just so beautifully written about people in a different time but it applies to any time. I used to wait so patiently for sundays mad men episodes
I dedicate Mad Men to my late dad, who passed away in November, 2019. My mum n dad are about the same age as the characters, being born in 1934 and 1938
Personally I feel both sides of it, the editing makes her look out of place with the wide shots and other people's reactions, but you can also love her because she is only focused on Don and commits to her performance
I guess its just that Don has no innocence, he's all about appearances and lizard brain. Megan is a free spirited extrovert. They have zero compatibility but each thinks the other is what they should need.
When this first played on TV I literally had to turn away I cringed so bad. I had a girlfriend once that would look deep into my eyes and sing some lame song and expect I would be mesmerized. I would always hope the phone would ring or something during. Pare did a great job of being both cute and absurd and an embarrassment all at the same time!
This was amazing on so many levels. Don and his rich/upwardly mobile friends’ lily white lives disrupted by the multiracial, bohemian ways of performance artists. This was an epic clash of cultures. They were unable to see the art in what she was doing and made her feel like an order by phone stripper. They were rich but clearly had no class.
@KD So because you don't like something you have no class? That is a bold & unbelievably ignorant comment. Maybe the "lily white" people as you labeled them found her performance ridiculously self serving & egotistical? Or perhaps they found it inappropriate because she did it in front of his business partners & their employees only because as she admitted she was drunk? Or in my case I found her characters constant need for attention so severe that the party she supposedly threw for her husband was really a way to give herself a stage & an audience for her to embarrass both herself & her husband? And the people accompanying her were not The Beatles or The Stones but just a group of her friends that were not talented enough to warrant the respect you thought they deserved. You may label this as "art" but perhaps others saw it for what it was-a desperate display for attention, which is who Megan turned out to be.
@@simplylivesimply4612 where do I start... Performers perform because they need to do it. And the audience should see it for what it is - their art . Clearly her guests wanted to be her or have her based on what happened in the series. And her “need” for attention wasnt off base given the cheating nature of Don. The Beatles were performing in basements for years before they were good enough to hit it big. The stiff white NY upper class was definitely shocked by Megan just as much as you were. Your interpretation of her intentions reflect your own introversion and you probably skip your work Christmas and karaoke parties too. Chill out friend!
@@dasikakn LOL PLEASE save your "insights"& hatred for white people for a crowd stupid enough to believe you. Betty probably would have warned them against the surprise party for Don, as she knows he HATES parties, to the point that he walked out on his own daughter's sixth birthday party--and she's his favorite kid...
He starts off as one of the most moral Mad Men but by the late seasons he just uses his position to groom the women he works with for sex. It's pretty sick. He's one of the most racist characters, he's ugly and never suffers for his flaws, success is given to him just cause he's the only one who thought to get into TV.

Along with Joan's C'est Magnifique accordion performance, absolutely some of the most lovely parts of the show ❤ beautiful and cute, very hard to pull off a performance like that but Paré has exceeded it!
Addiction is a helluva drug. Don had two beautiful wives and ruined both marriages because he couldn't stop cheating. But I guess if you look like him and have women falling for you, the temptation is hard to overcome.

And my man Roger's conversation with Jane.
Roger: "Why don't you sing like him"
Jane: "Why don't you look like him"
This scene was one of the BEST and most memorable ones in the entire Mad Men series.
really.....
na
Memorable, far from best
Yup.
I kinda cant get over one, how gorgeous Jessica Pare is, two, how catchy this song is and three, how much I really love Megan (the character)
She looks nasty with those teeth.
I love Megan, she's kind and her personality is beautiful. I don't see why so many people hate her.
***** she didnt know his mother died during childbirth??? why so hostile
Suzanne Moriarty I always found her to be annoying. I feel that she deserved MUCH better than Don.
There is this dimension of unfairness to how her character gets its way.
cinnamongirl3121 let’s not forget this is all a fake show 😂😂
Your Momma right? Lol
i love their apartment!
I named my female dog Zoobie. when I heard this song I laughed to tears and nearly passed out. laughed so hard it changed my brain chemistry.
Take care sir
That’s precious! 🥹
You're pretty fragile.
There are many memorable moments in the Mad Men series but this is IMO one of the best & most outstanding
She acted in the movie Lost and Delirious when she was a teen.
It's harder to watch when you know Don ain't in to it

She knows how much Don hates it.
Damn, Don!
I don't think it was his wanting attention and all eyes on him. More like he was genuinely embarrassed.
@@Pantano63 Yeah, that's really it. I would be quite embarrassed too.
No Megan posted cringe
Of course he's going to yell at his new wife who does a whore dance in front of his colleages and their wives. He wants to be proud of her instead of knowing that the other men only want to fxck her like a piece of meat.
@@theuofc IDK, I'd want to show her off a bit. I mean, she wasn't scantily clad, with a barely-there outfit doing a striptease. It's only cringeworthy because we know Don was embarrassed and didn't want a party in the first place.
Now that enough time has passed and I looked at this again, it really is MORTIFYING!!!!
Why ? I liked it .
@@thewrongshoes me too. I actually like it more on rewatches but I also understand and like Megan better too.

"Why don't you sing like that?"......."Why don't you look like him" great line
Never understood why Megan was so hated when most of the cast were cold blooded and unlikable.
Except ken ofc
I like her! I don't like Betty.
Roger & Jane lmfao. Don & his forced smile look like he wants the floor to open up & swallow him. Their marriage was shallow & baseless from the beginning. She didn't know how much this would embarrass him & he didn't know how not to crush her when she thought she was doing a good thing.
He's a very flawed character. She did something nice for hjm and he decided to be a cunt.
@Bolizen
Don has never liked parties, at best he tolerates them.
Meris Megan and Don didn’t even know much about each other at this point so she probably assumed he’d enjoy a party like this.
@@thesupreme950 They knew plenty about one another. Later on in the episode they talk about how it's not even his real birthday. She knows all about Dick being his real name and in general more about him than anyone else, besides Anna. He was with Betty for 11 years and she knew less about him than Megan after such a short time.

Thought I was the only one who saw this!
Sometimes you love them sometimes you hate them but you always understand them ❤

I found it cringe worthy but I did hate Don for giving her shit about it.
I thought it was cute and sweet. If a woman did this for me I'd for sure be embarassed but I'd love her for it.

The Mad Men equivalent of “Happy Birthday Mr. President”
Money can't buy class.
@@darkspeed62 🙄👍
