Casual only map would work but the number 1 rule of CSGO maps nowadays are that it needs to be very bright with lots of details. That could destroy the notion of the map.
if I'm not mistaken, back in the early days of csgo, there were unused default t-side voice lines for bots, such as "I'm going to plant the bomb at bombsite c", just in case a map needed that
"We played a competitive game on the map de_foption, a map from ye olden days of Counter Strike. It has 3 bomb sites. Should maps nowadays have 3 bomb sites? ...Noooo!"
this video just made me realize i was playing this map (remembering vaguely, some bits and pieces , mostly bombsites) back in the the days of old internet caffes in belgrade, serbia (hometown) when we as kids used to play cs
It makes me sad that new players will have no real incentive to lan just because it’s become so much more of a nuisance and it just makes more sense to play online at your own home. I will always miss those days
I remember playing this map as well in my favorite Cyber Cafe, back in 2005 or so. But very briefly. Nobody believed when I said there was a map with 3 bombsites xD
I think it would just make T's completely OP, maybe even more than Hostage Gamemode. Think of this: you play a 5v5 on a three bombsite map and usually as a CT, you need to: A: Pick and gamble a site with your team with at least 4 players but that will most likely result in the enemy team just choosing any of the other sites, and rush with all 5 players and forcing you to play retakes B. Scatter and let yourselves be killed off one by one. This is a terrible idea and the only way I could see this would be balanced is if we had some *abilities* or teleports, greater bomb countdown time or even stronger weapons and/or utility that would be available for the CTs.
I started CS with 1.5 in LAN I had no idea about this older map! Thanks for the video! Back then with my friend we would play 1.6 online, and 1.5 in LAN, and what I loved most about it other than trying out my own custom maps, was when we looked for war on irc people were open to play unofficial maps, such as de_sunny which was awesome in gldsrc engine! I started making a remake but couldn't really make the rotation routes work within CSGO movements speed :( But when it comes to 3 bombsite maps, I do have 1 great memory. There is this de_dust2 remake on CSS that has a dust2 extended theme but it actually has bombsite C between A and B in the back of CT spawn, it connects to A, B backsite and shortmid. Lots of fun in deathmatch, although i didn't try it in competitive setting much.
Am I the only one that noticed the vault doors 13 and 15 in noption and foption, respectively? These are an interesting reference to the original Fallout game from 1997

Bombsite C in de_foption strongly reminded me of the middle bombsite in the map Haven in Valorant. It is also a third bombsite in the middle of the map with three entrances and a giant pillar in the middle. The difference is that it doesn't have that insane verticality or sliding doors. However, there is a sliding door on the map Breeze.
Yes, Both Haven and Lotus now have three sites in Valorant. B is usually under defended so you can usually plant there as an attacker more easily at the cost of being pushed by both sides.
I just assumed this was the part of the half life level at the very start? After the cable car. Edit: Nvm, after seeing more than 2 seconds it's clearly not what I thought Also, the map maker worked on half life so
I know it's not an official map, but the operation map Library (I think it was called?) was really cool. The entire map was a library room with twisting, maze-like paths of bookshelves, and you could shoot out sections of bookshelves to creates new lines of sight and the books themselves were easily wall-bangable. The coolest part was, aside from CT and T spawns at opposite sides of the map, the entire map was one huge bombsite. Planting right away would tell the CTs where the bomb was but give them less time to reach it, while the longer you waited to plant the worse it got for CTs to find but the harder it became to actually hold. I actually don't think this concept was done as well as it could have been but it's interesting nonetheless. I'd like to see this concept re-tried as a hostage map, with CTs getting the hostages at round start (to avoid the weird midround flipping of territory without flipping roles) while Ts are given more time to block routes through the map.
Starting with hostages nearer the middle and the hostage rescue zone on the T side is a cool idea. It doesn't make as much sense to have the hostages on CTs immediately as it removes a key part of the mode, but suppose the two teams have to fight for hostage control it would be a nice addition. Gives Ts options to either hold hostage or hold rescue zone more, while also giving CTs options regarding whether to clear rescue zone first and wrap back (clearing a clean path for hostage) vs winging it for hostage rush, then figure out how to clear rescue zone at the end.
Oh wow I didn't realise de_foption had a third bombsite. Last year I had the opportunity to play on a public server that focused on CS Beta maps and cs_zoption, cs_ship, as_forest and de_foption were on there. Let me say a few words about those maps. You cannot imagine how T-sided cs_zoption is, even for a hostage map - once Ts figured out the map CTs stood no chance at all, CTs would be eliminated with no or very little losses on the T side. I think at one point CTs stopped winning rounds at all and that's when people stopped voting for it. cs_ship was an unfun claustrophobic mess although I don't think it was particularly unfair. as_forest was one of the most popular maps on the server actually - people and I personally genuinely enjoyed it not only because of the novelty of the assassination game mode, the map just somehow clicked - it wasn't too CT-sided and Ts had ways to counter CTs' plays though the turrents were pretty annoying, Attea probably shouldn't have made them instant kill. I'm certain de_foption was on the map list but I remember playing it only once and finding only the A and B sites, in fact, this video is the first time I'm seeing this C bomb site. Maybe we just didn't consider that possible and never bothered to look for it? lol
these old, complex maps with bunch of moving parts and interactive traps and tools reminds me a lot of the game intruder, a very fun pvp stealth game that hasn't seen a lot of success.
This could be a very good map for larger games with more players, especially due to the lack of cover and therefore requiring more spread out protection of bomb sites. Though I wouldn't mind more weird, unusual maps being added, forcing players to think and change their play style. Today, this could be done far better and more balanced than foption
Played Foption in local games and it is a really complex map. Incredibly big and the rotations are a bit messy. However, what I like the most about it is that Half-Life atmosphere feel with its soundscapes.
This map seems really fun!! I wonder exactly what about it actually makes it such a failure. Like ok sure it isnt competitively viable, but like, is it unfun? Could I play this with my friends like a gmod ttt map and still have a blast? I do wonder.
My nearly 23-year old memory of it: the layout was just too confusing and the map really was just too much of a labryinth. For what it's worth, there are plenty old old maps that I still don't have the layouts memorized despite playing them a ton back in the WON days (backalley, rotterdam) but I was still fond of them/they were quite popular for pubbing long ago (prodigy, storm, oilrig, highrise). My guess is that foption had the additional problem of just being way too big and open-ended with the angles, resulting in many kills that would feel unfair. At least with the other non as_ maps, the gameplay was still rather predictable like most CS maps.
That elevator really hit my nostalgia hard as a CS:S player. The only ever map I knew with an elevator was nightfever, and I had some really cool gameplay moments in the elevator Once as a T i killed the left CTs while going down and up in the elevator :D

wow, 20+ year old memory resurfaced. thanks for the nostalgia hit. funnily enough, it feels big enough and intricate enough to be a medium-ish sized battlefield 4 map (if the bombsites were flags obv).
Slight mistake at the start of the video, 1.1 was released in early 2001, with the official 1.0 release at the end of 2000 :-) In 1999 the game was still in the early beta versions and I think defuse wasn't even in the game yet until right near the end of 1999.
Ohhhh man I remember this map!!!! A was impossible to defend, B was your best option and C wasn't great but you could hide behind the rocket and it was hilarious to run around in circles if there was only one CT left. CS was so much more experimental, rats, airport, there was one map but I can't remember the name, it had a building with hostages (not the crack house map) and it had a launcher that would throw you towards the first floor window, it was probably the most fun I've ever had playing cs.
As Penguin started to talk about this video before he named the name, I thought “option” right away…but when I played it, it was called “fy_option”; still a bomb site map, but I played it in college during a time when we could only play with people in the school’s network. A good 20-30 of us would rotate on and off the game, trying “experimental” maps on 1 of 2 servers hosted at the school, haha: fy_option, de_legato, cs_storm when it came out…and cs_thunder was one of the first maps I played 😅 Ah, boomer nostalgia trip here, playing on my Dell “lunchbox” computer, churning out a lucky 30 fps on some maps 🤣
I do like how valorant made their 3 bomb site map, I think it was a very good way to make it. However, I just don’t think it would work in csgo because we only have a max of 5 smokes that can’t recharge, where in valorant you can have a lot more *ability* use of smokes to enter and hold multiple sites at a time to fake easier
A lot of early maps (prodigy, militia, nuke, train) look like maps from Half-Life because mappers where mostly invested in map design and using HL resources instead of making their own, which is understandable: first you make map work and then you can play with visuals. So, I don't think this feature is particularly unique for a map from this age.
IMHO you nailed it on the head with "it feels like a half life map for CS" ; as in, the map might be better suited to some sort of singleplayer expansion. But on the other hand I can't help but wonder what other arena-like maps from half life (two?) could be shoehorned into CS like that, and might feel like they work, at least for a brief instant?
wow... i've always wonder why the bots of CS had a voiceline talking about "C bombsite" I believe that this map is guilty now hahaha BTW, love your editing.
I find it weird that I was on my way to create a modern CS:GO map, set in an underground facility, with doors that could be locked off as seen in the original Half-Life, while also including an outdoor section, with an emphasis of the control room beign the heart of the map... Only to figure out it's been done literally 20 years ago. And it's lead me to reconsider making my map becasue it'll jsut be called a clone, or worse version of Foption.
i would love to see cs make a test mode in casual play that has a random selection of approved map designs from the workshop, would be fun to run around and shoot people in new enviroments but also might bring new maps to comp play if some of them are loved by the community :)
Would also love to see a video on penguin exploring the "hidden" opetion of community servers and exploring different game modes and maybe bringing some not so popular game modes / communitys to light
Honstley i love the map, it had so many good thoughts in it and even if several things might not work out or be balanced today, I would love to see a remake of this map with some adaptions being playable, although most likely not being suitable for competetive cs
I always wonder what's with bot sounds speaking "Planting at C" in the game files while no bombsite c maps in my cs 1.6 game back in the day, now i know what's up with that
Played it few times. Just a few, because this map wasn't added to many server map lists. The thing that it had THREE bomb sites, wasn't very clearly told to players. Killing with the buttons, yes, that was funny :D
CS map design philosopy. HEY BOSS! WE DID IT! OUR COMMUNITY MADE A 9/10 QUALITY MA.. :*BOOM*: executed. "No. We play 5/10 quality maps. FOREVER." "Boss what about a 6/10 quality map?" "THROW HIM IN THE PIT OF DEEEEAAATH, THEN SEND US TO MIRAGE FOR THE FOURTEENTHOUSANDTH TIME

"5 smokes ought to be enough for any team" ~Sun Tzu
Haven suffers from all map problems In valo. But I'd like to see 3 bombsite map in csgo
I recall small bits of this map, in the early days mansion, assault and dust were the go to for many lan events I played in the late 90s early 00s
The way that text was warped really cemented in my head that “foption” sounds like a fucking captcha
I think foption Is a good map for 10v10 causal and deathmatch
A lot of early maps (prodigy, militia, nuke, train) look like maps from Half-Life because mappers where mostly invested in map design and using HL resources instead of making their own, which is understandable: first you make map work and then you can play with visuals. So, I don't think this feature is particularly unique for a map from this age.
love that fallout reference at the vault door!
I don't play CSGO but this man makes its history pretty damn interesting
- button doors
- 3 sites
This is a Valorant map
Not gonna mention the vault doors that are obviously a reference to fallout 1 and 2?
IMHO you nailed it on the head with "it feels like a half life map for CS" ; as in, the map might be better suited to some sort of singleplayer expansion. But on the other hand I can't help but wonder what other arena-like maps from half life (two?) could be shoehorned into CS like that, and might feel like they work, at least for a brief instant?
I remember playing dust 3 on source. It was great fun in casual servers with larger teams.
wow... i've always wonder why the bots of CS had a voiceline talking about "C bombsite"
I believe that this map is guilty now hahaha
BTW, love your editing.
Its based on fallout, very cool.
Fun history experience and nice to see these old maps get some love!
this is such an underrated channel, love this content style
Poor Yurik: "It's my mission to instill as much variety into CS as I can."
CS community: square maps, grinding lineups and ultimate balance go brrrr
What if nuke had a third bombsite on the very top of the building?
A little note about cs_zoption. If you grab the map and place it in Half-Life, you spawn with some weapons and there are Human Grunts in it too.
i would love to see cs make a test mode in casual play that has a random selection of approved map designs from the workshop, would be fun to run around and shoot people in new enviroments but also might bring new maps to comp play if some of them are loved by the community :)
What an amazing video, I just wish there was a radar overview of the map, I had trouble understanding how the sites really worked in terms of position
wake up babe new penguin video
Volcano be like : "Man, I loved foption"
Riot : "do it"
Early CS maps were bonkers but its impressive how fast they honed in on the basic layout we have come to know and love.
Love the fallout reference on it
A remastered version of this map would be a fun inclusion in an operation imo
7:42 it felt like you are challenging map makers to make popular 3-bombsite map
i hope valve would make timed map events. maybe remade old maps that will be available for couple of weeks.
would at least change the game a little
The rocket silo is probably one of the coolest i've ever seen in goldsource
I think that Foption with just one or two from the "weird" features would be kinda fun i think, or just with all it has a Deathmatch map.
7:06 based sentiment to end a great video
Electrocuting was real fun back then in this map. I almost always went straight for that button
de_dust2_unlimited is also a 3-sites map. Even if it's not official it's still widely used in Counter-Strike Source community servers
I always wonder what's with bot sounds speaking "Planting at C" in the game files while no bombsite c maps in my cs 1.6 game back in the day, now i know what's up with that
this is like if nuke and vertigo had a child, then fed it drugs for 18 years
Damn, we used to play as_forest of community servers all the time in cs 1.5/6
Thanks for bringing it back to memory!
Low key best cs youtuber rn
Played it few times. Just a few, because this map wasn't added to many server map lists.
The thing that it had THREE bomb sites, wasn't very clearly told to players.
Killing with the buttons, yes, that was funny :D
CS map design philosopy.
HEY BOSS! WE DID IT! OUR COMMUNITY MADE A 9/10 QUALITY MA.. :*BOOM*: executed.
"No. We play 5/10 quality maps. FOREVER."
"Boss what about a 6/10 quality map?"
"THROW HIM IN THE PIT OF DEEEEAAATH, THEN SEND US TO MIRAGE FOR THE FOURTEENTHOUSANDTH TIME
I love your choice of music. I love Earthbound and Mother 3
7:26 holy shit he vented in cams
Map with 3 in comp sites would be good idea
Another odd map is de_747, it's made by the guy who made de_survivor. It's a map of a plane in the air and you can get sucked out of the doors if they are shot lol. Good video
Closing windows, cameras, scanning for players... Foption was Siege before Siege.
now this explain why Separatists in CSGO has "im going to plant the bomb at C" voiceline
man its so crazy seeing the old maps that used stock half life textures, reminds me of siege
