@@mylayoverlife You're welcome. We have a common love for flying, although I'm not a pilot I have served time assisting the flight crews of C-130, C-17, and C-5 cargo aircraft, and believe me when I tell you I wouldn't trade that time for anything in the world. I'm currently the senior training instructor for the Joint Air Load Planners Course in Europe and love what I do. Hope to hear from you soon.
We do love aviation because it takes us to fun, new places. I book my flights early to get the best options and lowest price. I then spend months watching the flight fill up, or get canceled
As an over the road truck driver, I totally get the “Do you know Steve?” story. Some people think that all truck drivers know every trucker throughout the country. Great video!
I really enjoy your videos. This one is great because it makes it easier to see what you go through to become a pilot. Your passion for your profession is obvious. It’s interesting to hear you advocating for the stability of bigger airlines as far as jobs are concerned. I think flying has a fair bit of romantic hype and myths, you do a nice job of dispelling those fantasies giving young kids a more realistic goal for getting your license. I like how you lay out the expectations and needs of the job. I don’t think many people realize how complex and intense the competition for flying is. Your banter with the guys was really fun to watch. Thanks for doing this.
I appreciate that! It was nice to have a deep dive into my background for whoever’s interested, so they know that I didn’t just become a major airline captain overnight.
Just got off a flight from Japan on ANA Nippon, the Japanese flight attendant introduced the pilots calling the first officer "Best Helper"! Many pilots when asked what you do, just say im a heavy equipment operator.
Paul I was on one of your flights to London. I didn’t want to hold up the line to be star struck but it was really cool having you as my Captain. I felt like it was a friend in the cockpit.
I knew about your channel a while ago, but recently started to watch it more. Keep up the great work! I love air travel and the overall business of aviation.
I'm doing my flight training out of Inflight and actually have my CFI chekride in that very room next Tuesday! Think I was actually there studying the day you all filmed. Thank you for all the great videos!
I was certainly excited to hear you say Rhinelander when talking about regional flying. My home town, currently 17 and working at Rhinelander-Oneida County as a lineman whilst completing PPL.
Your channel is showing me that there are even greener pastures ahead. I’m about to enter into the regionals and can’t wait to start. Hope to meet you someday!
Great Video. My 15 Year old niece is interested in piloting she took her first discovery flight and now we are signing her up for private pilot certificate. Thank you for sharing how you started out
Trying to use my military recruiting experience and aviations ops experience to work in recruiting for United. Stumbled upon this channel and have been watching ever since. Thanks for all the effort in putting these videos together. They're great!
It would’ve been cool to hear some questions about how your career has worked with your wife and children. And do you ever get lonely being away 18 days a month at hotels by yourself?
Louisville is a nice destination especially if you get outside of town to see the state parks, bourbon trail, the corvette museum in Bowling Green, the Toyota factory in Georgetown or the horse farms near Lexington. Kentucky has a lot of natural beauty. Try broadening where you go outside of the mall area.
Aspiring pilot here in Minot, ND (which received a shout-out of sorts in the video 😂). I just recently found your channel and I’m loving it. I’ll be subscribing to this podcast as well! Cheers!
Very interesting interview, thank you for all the insight! I come from an aviation family, my grandfather flew a B-24 during WW2 and later flew for Pan Am for many years. Have always wanted to learn how to fly but am intimidated by the time and commitment.
29:55 I wish I could say the 175 has good routes, LOL nope it sucks too, it’s no better than the 900. I don’t think Delta knows what to do with this fleet exactly. At least I never have to do those awful pro rate 200 routes. Cool that you guys went from Skywest to Sunny. I’m doing that same plan, start in a few months, hope to see you guys around. Glad to have him on, he’s the only Minneapolis pilot on social media!
I had the privilege to fly with you this morning IAH-EWR on the 764. Despite the very early morning, it was a great flight all around. This channel is great and now especially I look forward to the next video!
Another pretty interesting video. Have travelled numerous times over the years on Continental/United to locations like Beijing, Athens, Amman, Rome, London, Hawaii to name a few. Looking forward to future videos in your Layover Life series.
Would love, if you can, show more content as you do your PreFlight walk around and explain what you're looking at and looking for and perhaps more cockpit explanation of instruments and items if possible. Thanks!
Hi Paul, just wanted to say I love your videos. I’m looking into becoming a Airline pilot. I plan on going to flight school in a month or so. Any advise would be great. Thank you
Always seems like you love your job. You mentioned you like international flights over domestic, hands down. Which company do you think is best if you were coming into commercial now and why? When is United going to start using the Concord? Is that a goal for some.or is the Dreamliner the bragging rights? So many questions...this was interesting. ☆
I’m supposed to fly out of Minneapolis on Wednesday during the snowstorm. How much wind /snow can you take off in? Wondering about delays. We went ahead and switched it to Friday since I don’t think I’d even make it to the airport with 25 inches of snow and 45mph wind lol
I’m based in MSP, my morning flights Thursday are cancelled already. There’s a limit to how fast snow removal can occur, and they can’t use the runways when they clear them obviously. Delta seems to be canceling a lot of flights.
Any Gracie school will be great!! Keep the attitude that you’re just there to learn and not prove anything to anybody and you’ll do great. Nobody likes a spazzy white belt. 🤙
Awesome video, I enjoyed the comments about the 767-400, It's a shame they never built more of them, Think UA only has 16...... I did EWR-HNL-EWR on the 764..... If your company is cheap like most corporates & only buys economy on business trips, the 764 2/3/2 economy cabin is easier on long flights versus the 3/3/3 of the Dreamliners or even the 3/4/3 on the 'beast' 777-300. Although my last 2 EWR-SFO-EWR trips have been on the 773.
When you upgrade, is it based on your overall seniority at the airline? For example: were you only able to get Captain on the 757/767 bc other Captains on smaller planes either turned down the switch in planes or is it bc you would be senior to those people via overall airline seniority?
Yep. It’s based on your overall seniority and what other people want. If there are 30 open spots, it’s open to everyone but only the 30 most senior people who bid for it will get it.
Gotcha, thanks! I’ve been hooked on watching your videos and also about airline pilot life as a whole ever since one of your videos was recommended in my feed a few months ago. Just trying to learn all I can about it. I’m considering taking a discovery flight soon. I can retire from law enforcement 8 years from now with a pension and I will be 43yrs old at that time. Trying to figure out if this would be a another career worth pursuing. Thanks again for the great content!
great video...I'm so glad I found your channel. My 13 yo son has expressed an interest in flying...what would be a good way to get his feet wet, so to speak, to see if there's a future in it for him?
Love the videos and the work/life balance you have going, I see that your international flights are only to Europe, is that because you are based on the east coast? I see that United fly here to Australia, are they crewed by west coast staff? I know you’d have some great layover adventures down here 👍 so I’d love to see your take on us.
That’s partly the reason, but the airplane I fly doesn’t have the range to go to Australia, even from the west coast. Perhaps one day I’ll switch to the 787 on the west coast and come visit Oz!
hey! do you ever fly from munich to newark or from newark to zurich? cuz im flying polaris this summer on those routes on the 767-300er and it would be the coolest thing if you by chance happened to be the pilot!
@mylayoverlife - Great Conversation here! I'd love to see a picture of this 'hotel' you/the UA Pilots stay in London. Sounds God awful! Haha - Please post when you get a chance!
I been a fan of urs for a minute.... It just dawned on me, I am not a fan of much, not like a crazy fan, and I am big dude, basically ur size, about ur age, but if I ever walk on an airplane and you are the pilot I would probably lose my sh1t.... I'd turn into a J Bieber fan real quick 😂😂😂😂... that would be a sight to see 😂😂😂
Man, this is starting to become one of my favorite TH-cam channels, keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks so much.

Great that you set a good tone in the cockpit, makes for a great flight

It’s so fun to follow other people’s lives/careers to get insight into a whole other world…
Inflight is a very well known school in the cities. Starting my training with them next week 😊

I know nothing about all the technical talk, but still found the interview fascinating and fun.

Love it. I don't think anyone knows just what a pilot goes through, unless you are one.

Great content and Podcast. Keeping it low key and real will inspire the next group of pilots.✈️
Good stuff! Thank you for the smiles!
Really enjoy your content, Paul! Thank you for sharing!!
loved the video. thanks for talking about porto and lisbon! portugal is in your heart. ahahaha. And Aveiro, of course! Great video!
Just a great video..... I really enjoy your efforts in this regard.
Awesome video, good insight on the life of a commercial pilot.
Great podcast, thanks for doing this Paul!

This is great stuff, as an avgeek who picked the ‘other’ career this stuff is fascinating to hear! Subscribed to the podcast too 👍🏻
Great stuff Paul, keep them coming!
Do more of these this was so informational for upcoming pilots🔥
I really enjoyed this podcast man.
Great podcast, thanks for sharing!
Fellow Peenucker! 2006-16 for me! The guys and gals at 9E were great!
I am absolutely loving your channel, keep up the great work
I understand not leaving the hotel room (and the HATE for it) in Escanaba. That's my hometown. There is NOTHING special about it until August 😄

love this! AWESOME video!
What in your opinion is the best route in becoming an airline pilot?

Great interview. Really enjoyed that!
Love your channel, I was at 9E from 2006 -2012. MSP 06-08

100k on the way keep grinding Paul 👏🏾👏🏾
With United’s large order of 787’s, any interest in moving to the Dreamliner?
Of course…but I’ll stick to the 757/767 for a better schedule.
So how much longer will the 757s and 767s be flying? You will eventually be flying the 787, right?
Next time in Frankfurt I would be happy to take you on a tour and we can compare how layover life is within germanys biggest Airline 👍.
I wish I was still in aviation. Miss it every day🙁
Sorry about that.
I’m one of those passengers that likes to be in a moving plane rather than stopped 😂

How did you begin your journey into becoming a Pilot?
Have you flown with Chris or Pat Cooke?
I don’t think so.
As a former tow pilot I can tell you your life was in peril riding in that tow plane.
Haha! I don’t doubt you.
I wish I was a first officer
Paul, you are adorable. I bet you would be enjoyable to work with.
Holy SHIT - you waited 15 YEARS to upgrade - reason “I beeeed more tuition for the kids .”
Wow … just - wow
