Due to the pandemic I decided to follow my dream of being a pilot and started flight school at 34 years old. I got my private, instrument and commercial in just over a year and a half and as of last week I am now a CFI with my CFII checkride in a couple weeks. I cannot wait to be at the airlines but am also very excited to be teaching the next t generation coming behind me. Love your videos, keep them coming!
@@kobyjones I tried to fly at least 3 times a week and do grounds at least twice. I also went the part 141 route to get a two year degree so it was very structured. Now I’m instructing at the school. I think during private I was getting around 5-6 flight hours per week.
@@kobyjones lots of variables determine that but most instructors are getting 50+ a month, some are getting close to 100. Really depends on how hard you want to work.
So Carl, I’m 37 and I am starting flight school next Monday! Going to try 141 and full time work. 2hrs a day ground and I will try to pull 3-4 flights a week. A bit nervous but putting in the work has never been a problem for me in my life and after 20years in a career field chasing money it’s time to chase dreams!
I’m so happy I was served one of your videos this morning through my recommended videos! I’ve been binging your channel all morning. I love your content style and how you break up your activities and deliver them to us! You’re such a genuine guy. I love it!
That was a great incentive your dad gave you! I can tell your video required a lot of pre planning. What I like about your pilot channel is you come through as humble and sincere and not arrogant. Tears in my eyes at the end here.
Hi, you are just awesome, I'm not training to be a pilot however I am in my last year in Podiatry. It has been tough but as you said keep doing what we like and no matter how hard it is, at the end it will be worth! I can't wait to see my fiancee and kids in my graduation next summer, I will definitely make them proud. Thank you for sharing your journey, your awesome. Much love from UK
Im 21 and I currently work for united as a CSR or gate agent as more commonly known. I applied to the aviate academy back in September and i have gone thru the assessment at the start of October but have not heard back from the results. I want to stay hopeful but not hearing back since then makes me nervous. Hope you can provide any insight or hopeful words.
Thank you..watching your vids helps me with grief of losing my father, UAL Captain James M. Hykes 1960- retired in 1994. He passed away a few years ago, he was my hero, best friend. A random suggestion for your video came up, I take it as a sign from my dad for comfort.. and everytime I hear Pink Floyd's Learning to Fly! Thank you
Congrats to your rather brilliant Dad for finding a cool way to incentivize you. Congrats to you for using the opportunity to focus on your studies and beginning your career. All in all a great opportunity your dad offered and you followed through on. As a 1.5 million mile United flyer, it is really nice to get to know some of the folks in whose hands one places their life.
Paul, everything about your channel is so inspiring! You are a refreshing breath of air in this world. I love hearing you speak, seeing your smile, and the beautiful footage you capture. Please keep taking us with you on your travels!! Much love. ❤️
I love your energy and enthusiasm for your work, travel and family, keep sharing! I'm 47 and seriously considering the pursuit of becoming a pilot. So hearing you is super motivating!
This resonates so much with myself. Same job, same aircraft, same layover, different companies yet similar paths... the journey was by far the greatest part! Enjoy what you've earnt, Skygod!
Currently working at a small airport in florida (KGNV) at the FBO there as a dispatcher. We have a fleet of C560s that we use for medivac (primarily organ harvest and transport missions). I have my first class medical exam in a week so I can learn to fly. Cant be more happy! Parents said they'd fund my flying to a CFI license instead of funding me going to law school like I planned. So excited!
Dude your videos have been so inspiring for me and have helped encourage me to follow my dream of becoming a pilot. I just did my first flight and am so excited for the future
My daughter was hooked on flying at 14 also. It was during her 1st year AFJROTC at her HS. She is now a Junior in HS and attending ground school that her school offer. She is paying most of her flights and getting sponsorship through corporate and friends. But she loves flying. Her grades improved due to the GPA she has to maintain. Love your content.
Beautiful! Iceland is on my bucket list so I loved all the footage. It was great seeing Neil who gave you your first opportunity. I love that you don't waste time on your layovers! I have always felt that I want to get out and see everything possible in all my travels just in case I don't get back there. Can't wait for your next video.
I am NEW to YOUR channel and i love your journey to becoming a Airline pilot. I praise GOD that he has given you the ability to fly Airplanes. I would like to see Black Airplanes pilots doing the same thing. Yes. I am a black 80 years old grandmother who have such respect for anyone who can fly these big birds in the sky. May GOD bless you☺
Just found your channel. I'm currently a CFII at a 141 school and a cadet for Envoy Air just shy of 500 hours total time. It's so hard to focus on the now cause instructing isn't what I like to do especially when I already have a job lined up with American Airlines and knowing what is waiting for me. Love the videos and this is helping me understand that I'll be where I want much sooner than I think but still.
Every career has a brief moment of rewards. That chance of flying a Cessna Jet at a young age was one of those express lanes of the universe. Paths that cross in the aviation industry occur all the time. You just happen to be the right person to fill that seat, and it was not by accident. It's the right person, and not just a random time event created just for you alone.
after 22 years of hustling a old rig down the highway i am finally looking into starting my flight journey, i was dead set on just staying on a regional route when i get there but man you look like you are living the best life.
Paul, like all of the other videos, this one is very well put together. You're my favorite aviation vlogger. Within the next 5-7 years, I hope to be your FO one day.
I will say that I am glad I found your TH-cam Channel. Being my age I can never say be a Pilot for an Airline. But I did enjoy how you documented your journey. You did what you needed to be where you are today. Keep bringing more videos and I will keep watching, liking and commenting.
The end is so touching! I wish I had followed my father's profession (Air Force Pilot and Instructor) and became a pilot. Now, I can only enjoy videos like yours and imagine that I am flying while I am riding my Motorcycle. Cheers!
I’m a student pilot in training, nearing the end of my private, checkride is coming up soon February 18th, and watching your channel is just furthering my want to pursue this career. Thank you for inspiring many young pilots like me!
Inspirational video, as always. I live in Canada, but much of my family lives in places like, Lakeville, Albertville and Eagan MN. My cousin spent many years working for NWA before they became Delta. She now works at Endeavour out of MSP. I love watching your videos, as they show me what I could have done, had I continued down a path like yours. I earned my commercial, Multi IFR back in the 90's, but unfortunately I chased $$ over my dreams. Keep up the great work, Paul.
Captain, amazing video, you are so lucky to live in USA and to have all those opportunities, I'm from Ecuador and when I was young I wanted to become a pilot, it was impossible in my country, luckily I got a student visa and went to the US, got an A&P license initially, got a job and while I was working I became a commercial pilot, instrument, MEL, it took me 5 years, got back to my country flew airliners 23 years and end up my career flying corporate world wide, yes everything is possible when you have a dream.
Checkout flyingwithbigern also for another motivational pilot in the US if you don't know about him. Also Captain Boeing is a great pilot to watch who flies the 747 for a cargo company from Israel
Not sure why youtube recommended your channel to me today but I'm so glad that they did. Your videos are so awesome and your voice is very calming. It's obvious how much you love what you do.
I live in Iceland, this video is a good representation of those areas and the shots of the views are great, the only area I would add is Skógarfoss and if there's time Þakgil
I reckon this is your best video Paul. I got my first commercial pilot job at 50 years old after a few other aviation and non aviation jobs growing up. It challenges me every day and even though our aviation opportunities here jn NZ are not quite as widespread as the USA , I am happily flying an ATR both domestic and oceanic routes and I often think about your Layover Life when I am away and it always encourages me to get out and explore the communities that I am overnighting in. Thanks mate - hope to see you down here if United ever come back down this way!!! Cheers mate
I’m 18 years old just starting to get into aviation. I’ll be going to flight school next year and I am so excited to begin my aviation journey and seeing where this will take me
I just subscribed. Thank you for the adventures to places I will probably never see in person in my lifetime. This is what I love about TH-camrs like you.
Working on my private license at 30 and have had bad weather and broken down aircraft for the last two weeks trying to get my cross country flight. Thank you for the encouragement on this video
Iceland is one of my favorite places (The Azores are pretty cool too if you can get a hop into there). I haven't been to Iceland in years....I need to go back. Your videos make me smile.
You are definitely telling your age (Northwest and Continental). But I am about your age (college in the late 90s) so I understand and was able to track with you. Great video. Glad to have found your channel. I am a baby aviation geek having worked reservations for a major airline and worked airport operations for a small, regional carrier based at the FBO at DFW. I love what I do know about aviation and enjoy watching pilots and FAs share their experiences. My son works ground service at DFW currently so I do still get to spend some time traveling and exploring and hope to start bringing some of my adventures to TH-cam soon.
Just watched the video and the encouragement has come at the right time as I am in the middle of ATPL Flight Planning. The hard parts of the journey will be remembered fondly once looked upon from the future.
All great things are not designed to be easy. It's expensive and hard, but if it was easy and given for free there would be very little value. Stick to it and the journey will be a lifetime of great memories and no regrets.
Paul, I like all your videos but this one went above and beyond, excellent. I picture myself when you described your journey. I flew the 767 for almost 4 years, and now the 747, it is a blessing to be part of this aviation era with all the opportunities that are available. All the best to you.
It’s all about enjoying the grind to get to the top. I was enlisted army aviation and paid my way through flight school.(pre-ATP law) It’s great to look back and the people and experiences that got you where you are.
I loved this video and your story. Thank you for sharing the words of encouragement in the end. I really needed it. CFI life has been filled with ups and downs, but as you shared it’s about the journey and doing the hard things is worth it in the end. Just subscribed. Can’t wait to see more of your adventures. Hope to be flying in a regional jet soon 😊
Keep chasing that dream. Never give up for the tide will turn in your favor. I experienced the same in the ups and down of a flying career. It worked and I ended up at an airline flying my favorite plane a Boeing 737. It was worth the wait that is rewarded in time of a career that only a few can achieve. You are in an era of great pilot demand and opportunity.
Thank you for taking us on your adventures. You are so blessed to be doing what you are doing. Hi Neil! Aviation is the best journey. No matter what it looks like. I could see you talking to middle school students. Encouraging them to take their first flight. God Bless!
I grew up in Northfield! I started jumping at skydive twin cities in Forest Lake, threw bags for Delta at MSP and now I’m working on my private license. Just found your videos and I’m enjoying them! Pretty cool that I knew exactly where you were!
Just recently started following your channel. Love how upbeat and positive you are. My son is a naval aviator-at one point he was thinking of going commercial-but now he’s having too much fun flying the gray jets! 😂😂
I am going to share this video with my son who is about to start flight training. He hopes to have a career like you have had. Thanks from Brisbane Australia.
@@mylayoverlife Same! My solo photo is on my office shelf. 750 hours later, 887 is still a fond memory, and though I lost touch with my CFI, I do fly over to look at the field now and then.
That’s amazing! I was lucky enough to score a 10K USD scholarship to get my PPL at 16. Just a few months after, I soloed. Now I’m building time and waiting for the weather to clear up before I do my solo XC. On my 17th birthday I hope to pass my checkride. Someday I hope to join you in the left seat. You’re living my absolute dream! No better place to train than at my beautiful home airport, KMSO. It’s located right in the Rocky Mountains with gorgeous surrounding terrain.
Well done Paul, you are so blessed to do something you enjoy every day and get paid to do it as well , a real inspiration for those that are in doubt about there path in life. Love the bit with Neil who gave you your first chance its great to meet your hero’s and people who have inspired you well done.
Watching your channel has single-handedly led to me overcoming my flight anxiety which I developed a few years ago. Most recently, after binge watching your videos in the week before, I was on a transcontinental flight that didn’t bother me in the least bit, not even when we got stuck on the tarmac for an hour and a half in a tiny Embraer. Thank you! I look forward to your videos.
Hi Paul! I love your videos. I’m graduating from college with a business major in May 2023. Once I graduate I plan to go full time with the aviate program with United. I have 35 hours from a small school where I was just doing it for fun and working towards my ppl. After reflecting on life at 21 I truly believe becoming an airline pilot is my dream. You are incredibly passionate and inspiring and I hope to be along side you in a couple years. Thank you!
Absolutely love your videos!! This trip was great!! I watch so many other channels mostly of flight attendants where they barely leave their rooms. To be honest I have also used your videos as a motivational tool. Just finished flight attendant training with your airline..kind of afraid to mention names..but sometimes when training was a bit overwhelming..I am 63 and have never done this before…I would go back to the hotel and watched a couple of your videos and get all excited about the traveling aspect!! So thank you!! You really did help me out!!
Always an exciting day when I sit to lunch and see a new video from you is up, thanks for sharing your story and the great perspective of Iceland. Can't wait for the next one!
28 year old here. Just got my Pilot’s certificate on Oct 6th. It’s an amazing journey, and I too am looking forward to what flying has to offer. Good luck, and don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old! Don’t fret over mistakes during flight training. Trust your instructor, and don’t set impossible expectations. Just study, work hard, and enjoy it. My check ride was one of the best days of my life. I hope yours will be as well!
Love this! Thanks! Maybe we flew together at the beginning of our careers with CAL in IAH. I too started as fa in '06. I get the feeling you may be a Christian. Great guy, either way. Thanks for encouragement to do hard things. At 40, I'm finally realizing how valuable challenges are in life. God bless! Hope to fly with you out of sfo someday😀
My stepson's journey has been so much like your's it's scary. From the better grades exchanged for flight time, to soloing on his 16th birthday and getting his private pilot's license on his 17th birthday. One big deviation for him was the 2 years flying high performance aerobatic aircraft post college but eventually he settled in with a commuter airline and just started at a major this week. Who knows, he may end up at United at some point.
Thank you for making this, I needed this. I have my instrument check ride in 2.5 weeks and it’s been a long haul with studying, flying and still working. Sometimes you just need alittle extra push. Thank you my friend blue skies and tails winds to you!👍
The electric fence reminded of this quote from the humorist, Will Rogers: "There are three kinds of men: ones that learn by reading, few who learn by observation, and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves."
Thank you for the video paul! your journey to your pinnacle career is motivation for future aviators. I hope to run into you one day (maybe JFK) and buy you a beer. Cheers mate!
Love your videos, Paul, they feel like traveling with a good friend! It's truly a gift to find your calling in life at a young age -- "get a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
Flying United in two days! not on a 75 or 76 so you won't be driving, but congratulations on a great career to this point! I hope you have many more years ahead of you.
Saw the horse at the end and went "Oh he's going to have a good time with the inbound customs form question 'Have you been on a farm or near wildlife....?' "

That’s awesome!
Excellent clip with very valuable advice! Thank you.🫡🇺🇸
Excellent, great production quality!..great tips
Just recently started following your channel. Love how upbeat and positive you are. My son is a naval aviator-at one point he was thinking of going commercial-but now he’s having too much fun flying the gray jets! 😂😂
I am going to share this video with my son who is about to start flight training. He hopes to have a career like you have had.
Thanks from Brisbane Australia.
Such an inspiring career! Congratulations!
Working on my instrument rating as I type this. Thanks for your videos!
Stanton is a special place, had my first 80 hours in that green C150 in the first shot.
❤ Iceland too, will visit again - thanks for sharing!
Really?! That’s so cool! That’s the plane I soloed and got my license in.
Hey! How were you able to find scholarships??
Good job! Very encouraging and inspiring. Keep it up. The world needs more people like you Paul.
You are an inspiration! Hope to one day fly in the right seat with you Captain! Thank you for the encouragement.
That’s so good to hear!!
Man I love the effort you put into your videos. I really appreciate it and it doesn’t go unnoticed by the viewers!
Awesome video Captain, well thought out storyline, and excellent editing! Great job!
That’s so good!! Hope we get to go explore someday!!
Always an exciting day when I sit to lunch and see a new video from you is up, thanks for sharing your story and the great perspective of Iceland. Can't wait for the next one!
Thank you! It’s exciting for me too.
I've got my first solo in about 3 hours. Wish me luck! I hope I get to fly to Iceland someday
Such a wonderful story! Thanks for taking us to Iceland and on the footsteps to your position with United.
Thank you for the background story. When you really really want to do something and you achieve it it’s fabulous.
Love your videos, great inspiration, keep up the great work! your a great model for so many people, God Bless
I'm an aspiring second career airline pilot. Almost 40 and about to take my discovery flight at Flying Cloud! Great videos
Go for it Koby! I’m doing the same.
Wow… grew up right next to Stanton and just happened across your channel. Love it!
Hi, I just found your channel and I am so grateful for it. I absolutely love your content, thank you, thank you so much ❤
Wow, amazing and positive energy. I think we could all use some of this warm and kind advice at times 🤙🏻
Thank you for making this, I needed this. I have my instrument check ride in 2.5 weeks and it’s been a long haul with studying, flying and still working. Sometimes you just need alittle extra push. Thank you my friend blue skies and tails winds to you!👍
Fantastic video! Thank you for the inspiration.
The electric fence reminded of this quote from the humorist, Will Rogers: "There are three kinds of men: ones that learn by reading, few who learn by observation, and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves."
I’m definitely the latter. 😂
Thank you for the video paul! your journey to your pinnacle career is motivation for future aviators. I hope to run into you one day (maybe JFK) and buy you a beer. Cheers mate!
Cool scenery and cool video!
Great drone footage. Awesome location. Very informative career path info. Thanks for the video!
Love your videos, Paul, they feel like traveling with a good friend! It's truly a gift to find your calling in life at a young age -- "get a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
A gift indeed.
Iceland - land of magic, volcanoes and the inside of the earth. Oh and dragons., the newest land mass on earth, just 25 million years.
Thanks for sharing.
This was an awesome video. I enjoyed the way you told your story. You’re an amazing man and an inspiration. I hope the youth see your videos and become inspired to become successful. 💪🏽
another beautiful, entertaining video from you
What an inspiration! Superb content mate!
Thanks for the message. I’m looking to start my journey to pilot very soon. Former AF Flight Engineer, but now fly a desk for Boeing… but I feel I belong back in the air
Great video. Iceland is definitely on our bucket list.
Great video! Thank you, Captain -
From a fellow Husky grad, great video! Iceland is beautiful and if I manage to get back there I want to check out the thermal pool you featured!
As a college student switching career paths this was really helpful, I was hoping there were other productive routes to achieve flight hours and compensation other than instructing after CPL
