Demo Day At Rose - Warpig, Skunk Ape, & Orca!

  • It was demo day at Mt. Rose. In years past it's been just our local shop with what they still had in the shop - mostly just skis. So I went up for the day not thinking there would be much for me to ride. To my surprise the crew at Ride and Lib Tech had a couple larger boards that I could hop on.

    Great video. I own a Warpig, Superpig and an Orca....I'm 5'7" with big size 10 feet for a short guy. The Superpig probably rides a lot like the Skunk Ape.....really fun at high speeds....big open carving monster. Agreed....the Orca isn't for everyone. It took me a full day of 20+ runs to start to appreciate it's characteristics and I ended up buying one. It is great in powder and can be very turny with the rocker between the feet in a fun way. Agreed Magne Traction can grab in soft snow sometimes.

      Demo days are cool, but yeah, more time on the Orca and I probably would have figured out where and how to ride it. I felt like the Warpig was a bit more playful than the Skunk Ape. Maybe it's because it takes me a while to get used to boards that actually fit me, but it felt like the Skunk Ape wanted to rail carves where the Warpig was more freestyle in a pow appearance.

    I'm glad you like the war pig it is super stable because it is so wide and flat. a great board definitely a quiver killer but feels like I'm steering a tug boat sometimes. I always run into trouble riding the orca doesn't really shine on the groomers, I would like to try riding it through trees on a pow day. I'm loving the super doa it super damp at high speeds I was impressed the first time I tried it out. I been trying learn more buttering tricks the battalion evil twin makes it's easy to get into a press

      All your assessments seem to be right along with what I felt except for the tugboating on the War Pig. I'm tall and have huge feet so I rarely get that feeling and when I do it just takes time for me to ride a board that's actually wide enough for me to use properly.

    How do you feel about the skunk ape being a good 1st real board to buy? It's my 4th season and my beginner high flex fully rocker board broke. I am a big guy at 250lbs 6ft. Can I handle this board you think for just casual riding and ripping?

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd go for a stiffer zero camber board if you can. The jump from a rocker to a really long camber will be rough. The Skunk Ape locks into it's edge and its tougher to do initiate turns like a rocker would.

    I ride this warpig in 151 with union contact pro bindings. They are maybe a bit too soft for higher speed carves, what do you guys think, should i get a different pair of bindings?

    What size boots do you wear? I’m 6 2” 235 with a size 15 boot, I’ve been considering getting a wider board because I’ve been riding a Burton custom 162 wide. To be honest using the burton photon boots I don’t really have much of a problem with heal or toe drag, but I know I’m like right on the edge of towing or healing out when I start carving hard. I just feel like I may be a little more comfortable on a wider board so I was just trying to get a riders opinion with a size 15 boot because I’ve been considering getting the Lib tech Ultra Wide, or the 158 war pig.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Damn, With 15's I'd definitely suggest boards with over 320mm nose AND tail. The Skunkape is probably your best bet. The Warpig tapers a bit in the back, but it's still wider than your Custom. Between the two, I'd go with the Skunkape if you like to go fast with LONG carves and the Warpig if you want something a bit more playful. I'm currently waiting for the snowpack to get a bit better to get on a handmade UK board that could actually be perfect for you (I haven't had enough time on it to fully endorse it)

    I’m 6 foot, 220, size 13 foot. What would you recommend for board and bindings. Really love to carve, go fast, and do tree runs. Also live in the Midwest so I get out on a lot of groomed man made snow, unless I can make out the UP in Michigan at Mount Bohemia.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The problem is, generally, fast and trees are opposites. The Skunk Ape is a really fast with long arcs, where something like the Spring Break Pow Twin is great for tight carves. The Warpig might be right in the middle there, since it's kind of like if you chopped off the tail of a much longer board. Only issue is the tail bein narrower, could give you some boot out if you carve deep.

      The Warpig was fun. The stiff tail and loose nose would take some time to used to in the park, but as a cruiser/pow board it would be fun. Also pretty easy to ride switch even with the taper.

      You'd probably be good on the Medium 151 or even the Small 148. Dont let the small sizes fool you, the 151 Warpig is a 161 with 10cm of the tail cut off.

  • @MrNiggo94

    Sick video! Would love to attend a Demo Day like that myself at some point. I managed to score a Skunk Ape 173UW for myself but I still have issues finding the right size bindings. I'm 6'4 and got a 48EU boot size, I think that's around size 14 US and struggle to center my boot on the board, even when maxing the setback on the disc and heel cup. There's always too much toe overhang compared to heels. I don't even bother trying L bindings anymore but most XL are still too small. I just ordered a set of Ride Capo XL...maybe they will do the trick. Do you have some other binding recommendations for big dudes?

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't had too much of an issue with bindings. I've rocked Rome Vice, Nitro Team, and Bataleon Halldor's and haven't and never had an issue with centering.
      One thing you can do is turn the mounting disc 90 degrees so the channels are perpendicular to the length of the board. This will let you slide the binding back a bit to get your boot more centered.
      The other thing when looking for bindings is to look at bindings that have a bit of a toe kick. Some models will be pretty flat which put your toe closer to the snow.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the few runs I took it did seem to go pretty fast. The taper from the nose to tail will allow you to stay on edge with a straightish carve. And the stiffness in the tail allows you to sit back on the faster part of that radius.

    for the Warpig is the 151 good for me? i’m 125 size 9 shoes and 5,10

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Warpig is interesting for sizing.
      My rule of thumb on twins is to measure your boot from heel to toe - then try to find a tip tail width that matches.
      I think the word from Ride is to size down like 5-10cm from what you ride now - This being from it's cut tail, a 151 would be more like a 161 if it had a symmetrical tail.

    Many thanks for the review. 💪 Would it be fair to compare the Orca to the Burton Fish for (deep) pow & soft snow? How would it compare if yes?

    • @MarkoLerota
      @MarkoLerota 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He took 156 Orca in this video which is too small for him. He should be on 162. No wonder he didn't like it. He tested skunk ape which is 170 and it was good.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never seen the Burton Fish, but looking at the details on both - I see the Fish as a Steep and Deep only board. The taper is way gnarlier than the Orca which will give you a ton of nose float. That nose float is great if it's steam, tends to slow you down, which on mellow terrain can be an issue with speed. I think the Orca is more of an All-mountain board that leans towards pow.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      lol, Nice try, but no.
      The 156 is as big as most companies "wide" boards. The 156 orca is similar to a 172 Skunkape with the tail chopped (the 156 as a twin is 176cm). I've ridden small boards my whole life.
      What I didn't like about the Orca was the placement of the inserts in relation to the C2x rocker. The center rocker is too close to the front inserts, making the back end pivot out easier. That makes the front camber sit out in front of your foot instead of under it which makes the nose contact point grab early.

    • @MarkoLerota
      @MarkoLerota 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't want to contradict you, but they recommend Orca to be ridden 3-6cm smaller than your regular board size. I'm 6'3, 13 size boot, and 162 should be my perfect size. That's the biggest Orca you can get. T. Rice drives 153/156. And I am much bigger than him. You even more :-). All I wanna say is when I jump on the smaller size board for my weight/height, I barely can drive it. Total lack of control. So I thought this happened to you as well. Never step on the Orca. But I will in a few weeks time. I own 165 skunk ape and I love it.. But I am eager to try the Orca :-)

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get that, but smaller boards are easier to ride being more skate-like. Charging and carving is out of the question, but maneuvering a small board is considerably easier than a larger board - You can stand on a 2x4 and get it to tip over, stand on a 2x10 it takes way more effort.
      The skunkape was sick, but a completely different ride than the orca.

    • @WilAlexander

      It depends on what you're looking for in a board. It sounds like you don't like riding the Orca now, but without the reasons why, I cant be much help.

  • @erickgonzalez2099
    @erickgonzalez2099 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I had the chance to buy both a orca and super pig brand new. I feel like there’s overlap between the two. Which would you recommend keeping? Looking to ride mainly trees, powder, and groomers.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really comes down to how you like your turns on groomers. Personally I'm not a fan of the rocker in most lib/gnu or neversummer's. It makes low speed swivels and some edge to edge easier, but you tend to have less control and the edge control you do have is focused on certain areas.
      I'm a bit skeptical on the Slimwalls on the new Rides - There's a reason the ski and snowboard industry all but abandoned cap construction years ago. K2 seems like they're trying to save money by calling it a new tech and charging you the same (if not more)

    Awesome video. Being a larger rider myself it’s rare to get a review of larger boards being ridden by large riders. Being 6’3” 275 most boards are not stiff enough.

    • @WilAlexander
      @WilAlexander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should check out Capita's boards, across the board I feel like their stiffness is higher than listed - The Spring Break Powder Twin is listed as a 5 but is probably more like a 6 or 7.
      Warpig is pretty stiff if you like that shape. Superpig should be stiffer.
