The question whether or not minimalism is dead? I think is very interesting and subjective. As really it provokes the question ~ what actually is minimalism? Moreover, what is minimalism in terms of also being a minimalist video creator and being able to continue creating content.
So for this video lets put minimalism under the microscope…
Does the above, culminate in asking, is this the end of minimalism? That is, when the very nature of minimalism goes against the grain of society, advertising & physical content to show in minimalist videos.
I explore in this video how some may think minimalism is dead. If Minimalism is equal to only decluttering. How furthermore minimalist channels on youtube may die when they run out of content, if it has only been a minimalist journey of stuff rather than the minimalist lifestyle. Albeit, I address the problematic nature of being a minimalist content creator. That is, that large platforms want to use videos' as a vehicle for showcasing products and advertisements. Therefore, the minimalist video maker, is not going to be a priority for the marketing algorithm Gods 😂

I grew up in the 60s and 70s , there just wasn’t the stuff to buy , not as many restaurants and malls either , no cable no internet no social media no cell phone no computers, it’s a modern day overload. We spent a lot of time outside, doing physical things , and reading , journaling , and just daydreaming ! It’s almost hard to remember not needing constant stimuli. We didn’t have much , families had smaller houses , shared 1 car , simpler meals, hand me downs , we didn’t have plastic bags , or water bottles , it was tap for all. It was a simpler quieter time , we are a desperate world spinning out of control

I don’t think minimalism is dead; I think the talking heads on the subject are declining. I have to admit I am not interested in watching people talk about minimalism, and using stock photos. I like to see how they live; like you. You show how it affects your life and thoughts. I remember when I first started watching your channel you said you had a goal, to travel - it’s great to see your journey. What’s next, minimalist travel, setting up your new home? Also what’s important is liking the content creator.

I was a military brat thru the 70s an 80s. I was never poor. But I was never aloud to have any thing because we would have to move at a moments notice. I have been a minimalist since the 70s and I am now in my 50s and I am still a minimalist. I just didn't know that's what it was called until like 5 years ago.

I see a decluttering trend on TH-cam that many videos are named things like “Getting rid of everything”, “From horder to minimalist” or “I got rid of 90% of my stuff”. In that sense I believe it is super trendy.
However, many people are afraid of saying they want to be a minimalist because that is promising something that they may not be able to achieve or even want to achieve.
But when one gets to a specific point in once decluttering something happens. I never ever thought I would go as far as I have done and there are more to come. I am minimalistic and I will be a minimalist shortly. It is great.

I’ve recently started watching your channel. I am going one step further. My minimalist journey will eventually lead me to my final goal. I have fallen hard for the tiny house movement and that could be built on a trailer or turning a bus or even a cargo van into a tiny home.
I just love the idea of being able to move at a minute’s notice. The thought of waking up in a different place every other day along the coastline with my dog is what makes me keep striving towards that final step…

I think you‘ll find that minimalism is a good deal older than 2017… It‘s been going in waves for decades and it‘s certainly been much written about and online since the 80s and 90s. Whether it‘s simple living, frugalism, voluntary simplicity, essentialism or minimalism, versions of it, including extreme minimalism, have been around for a very long time. It‘s been a big visual online since at least the early 2000s because I‘ve been following it!! Terms like Affluenza (book came out in 2002) are nothing new, consumerism as a problem has long since been identified. The Six Items or Less challenge started in New York in 2006….
So no, minimalism isn‘t dead. It‘s ongoing, whether on YT or elsewhere, and from my (older) pov there are indeed more people concentrating on the essentials of life, people, not things.

    • @SagelifeMinimalism
      @SagelifeMinimalism  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, I know it has been around for much longer as people think it is comparative with stoicism too. Alluding to the point that the ancient Greeks were minimalists. I started by saying ‘trending’ as in it had TH-cam ‘virality’ in 2017. Even though it had been discussed before online. My opinion was that it peaked online in 2017. But from a content creators perspective, content about it was on the decline for the time being. I’m very much talking about its presence on TH-cam & the subject matter about it on TH-cam throughout.

While doing dishes and listening to this, I didn't expect the random pause at 4:00 and stared blankly at my phone to the right of me, just like you did 😂
15:19 I so agree with this. I had way more stuff than you and don't considered myself a minimalist yet (there are categories I am definitely an extreme minimalist tho!) When we were between homes, 95% of my family's possessions were in storage. The rest we had with us were in duffel bags and a few crates. Then when we release the kraken, omg, I was not able to manage when all those stuff coming back in my life. It was stressful living in a small apartment moving boxes around just to find or get what I need. But I feel so good, now my son is in summer break, I could really focus on decluttering. I already made 3 trips to the thrift stores with a full trunkload of stuff, but I still look around and still overwhelmed with things. So it is still a journey! I just want to get to the point where I am close to living with how minimal I used to live when I was in between homes.
Thanks for your response in another of your previous videos. I got the courage to declutter the to-be-read book pile. I was also encouraged to switch out my everyday purse thanks to your bum bag videos. 🙂 I am loving living lighter.

I will never ever stop being a minimalist. A lifestyle can't be 'dead' as it isn't and shouldn't be a trend that goes in and out of fashion (although minimalist aesthetic might change over time but I feel that's different as people who adopt the aesthetic aren't always minimalists but just like the look). Ultimately, minimalism is a lifestyle that strips life back to what is important/essential to you and once adopted it eventually extends far beyond physical stuff to every area of your life. That said, minimalism for some people can certainly end up as just a label for the ego to cling to and to get clicks or shares on the internet, same as any other label or identity.
P.s love your videos as I'm really into extreme minimalism, and I'm also from the UK :)

I am an extreme minimalist but I am definitely the anomaly you mentioned, I do a lot of one-in-one-out 😂 having ADHD and autism makes it hard for me to be “satisfied” causing what has recently been termed obsessive compulsive spartanism (which is a disorder that involves hoarding and realizing the hoarding and subsequently decluttering drastically). I always feel guilty because it feels like I’m defeating the whole purpose of minimalism when I do this. But I have learned to try to be kind to myself and do my best to really analyze what is bothering me about what I have and if it really needs replacing. I’ve been a one-bagger for a long time now but I’ve gone back and forth between different sized “one bag” 🤣 Finally feeling content with one tote maximum but currently on the bum bag train as well! Thank you so much for these thought provoking videos my friend, they are so so so helpful and validating as well ❤

If you have a condition that is a rationale for why you do this rather than a need to overconsume I don’t think you can include yourself. 😊 Some people I think simply want to continue to buy, and upgrade what they already have with not very valid reasons. Other than they just want the latest new thing. Some are at least able to let go of some stuff to make way for these new things. By casting the older things aside. Maybe simply for less clutter but also maybe because the old thing lost value to them. Now there is a new trend or edition. What you are describing sounds like a consequence. Not something you actually want. Be kind to yourself. 😊 ❤️

I think the greatest benefit for society is that if minimalism and decluttering is talked about it will start a change in attitudes that will change our society in the now and in the future. It is in some way like the vegan movement and lifestyle. When I started my vegan journey I would get a piece of cucumber and a tomato slice to eat in a restaurant (as the main meal). Minimalism is not dead, I love watching your videos and seeing how minimal your home is, I would love a home like that but the trouble is many people dont understand how clutter is a constant chore, always having to sort, clean, tidy and make space for more and more is so stressful. Other people dont always get that and want to get more and then people constantly trying to declutter and explain how it affects them get drained and exhausted of trying and feel like they have no choice but to accept some extra things in their home that they know they dont need or want. Minimalism is not dead but consuming is contagious.

According to The Minimalists, minimalism is a reaction to decades of affluence and hyper-consumerism. We are drowning in stuff! But in times of economic hardship, people will be less inclined to downsize what they have. If things get really unstable, they may instead stock up and become preppers. Perhaps this accounts for the waning interest in minimalism videos. Or maybe minimalism has outgrown its focus on material 'stuff' and might instead focus on inner minimalism, and the minimalist cultural movements in poetry (haiku), art and music. Less clutter for the mind, perhaps. Which is what I like about your channel, it's about more than just counting socks! 😀

I think maybe you didn’t watch the whole video? 🤔 As this is not what the video is saying? I’m discussing the lack of minimalist video makers and how minimalist content could come to an end if we think it is only about decluttering? I actually go on to say minimalism is not dead. And will not come to an end for those who think it is about more than decluttering and just the stuff. And at no point did I mention an end to minimalist content meaning the reintroduction of tons of stuff? Rather the converse, that for some people their journey of making content about minimalism ends once they have decluttered all their stuff. Not that they reintroduce things to become a maximalist. It ends, because they have no more stuff to declutter- unless they continually buy more to declutter further. Which again, I elaborate, decluttering alone is not minimalism ✌️
