Technically Alan Rickman was a stage actor long before Die Hard. This was his first *movie* role and he landed it within weeks of arriving in L.A.

Along with so many other fantastic things, I love how the elevator near the end pings and then explodes for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

I 100% believe that Hans already knew which one Takagi was (given how well planned and researched this whole operation was), but wanted to see if he would step forward to identify himself.

Die Hard is a heartwarming tale of a married couple who have drifted apart and let their jobs come between them. The husband travels across the country to see his wife and child for Christmas, in the hopes of making up with his wife and reuniting the family, only to be confronted with a band of grinches determined to ruin Christmas for everyone at Nakatomi Plaza! With the help of his likable and wacky sidekicks, a limo driver and a beat cop, in the end he HO-HO-HOs his way to defeating the evil grinches, rekindling his relationship with his wife, and saving Christmas for (almost) everyone at Nakatomi Plaza! It's the most Christmasy of Christmas movies!

Sign of a good 80s / 90s action star is one who's fallible, imperfect, struggles in fights sometimes, takes damage, & reacts with tremors every now & then to near death situations. One of the reasons why the great DIE HARDs are such classics. See also, Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones AND President Marshall.

  • @thepodbaydoorshal

It is a Christmas movie. Hans is the Grinch, attempting to steal Christmas (the heist). McClane is Ebenezer Scrooge - bullheaded and confrontational (in his marriage) and even scoffs at Christmas traditions somewhat (when he shows up at the party) but has a change of heart when visited by the Ghost of Christmas past (Sgt. Al Powell). Argyle is a young first time Santa Clause, offering to help McClane to ‘score’ and even drives him home in the end in the limo (Santa’s reindeer).
McClane even steps in for Santa at one point by dropping a present for Hans, down the chimney (the C4 down the elevator shaft)!
That and the fact that traditional carols are sprinkled throughout the score is a massive clue!
And let’s not forget the snow at the end, serving us a White Christmas. Ellis certainly had a love for snow didn’t he?

Before his acting career took off, Bruce Willis worked for a while as a bartender. So when the police head cop says "he could be a bartender for all we know", it was a little inside joke.

  • @MartinBeerbom

Bruce Willis got permanent ear damage from the scene under the table, 'thanks' to the close quarter sound reflection and extra powerful blank ammo. (Similar thing happened to Linda Hamilton. She forgot her earplugs one time while shooting the elevator scene in Terminator 2.)

Touch-screen computers would have seemed very high-tech in 1988 as you thought. A large portion of the people that watched this movie in 1988 would have never seen a touch-screen computer in real life.

  • @MartinBeerbom

The face-to-face meeting only happened when they found out that Rickman could do a pretty nice American accent. It was not in the original script. They also didn't have a good ending until well into the shoot. That led to a pretty hefty continuity error: When you see all of them coming out of the truck at the beginning, there's no ambulance in there. They only wrote the planned ambulance escape after that.

You'll definitely want to see the sequels, with the exception of the fifth and final film. Skip that, but watch the others. The first sequel is quite similar to the first film, right down to being set during Christmas. It also has a couple of cameos from the first film that you'll probably like. The third film is the favorite for most people and I know you would enjoy that one. I wasn't personally very keen on the fourth film but it's not bad at all and a lot of people like it, so it's worth watching.

The vertical vent shaft scene always creeps me out. I often imagine how impossible it would be to catch that ledge, and then essentially doing a very strict muscle-up and somehow climb into that tiny opening. I generally don't think into things I see in movies too much, but given the gravity of that scene...

So... In a building that's actively being built, the construction workers will do things around the building depending on the season. Before they took off for the holidays, someone on the crew tagged that piece of HVAC equipment with "Merry Christmas." Many of those who don't call this a Christmas Movie ignore the fact that there is a Family Reunion, a Redemption Arc, and a Triumph Against The Bah Hum-Bugs (everyone else but Al and Argyle are either Evil, Incompetent, or a Dumb-ass).

Bkack computer guy is well known character actor was in Topgun as Gooses replacement for Maverick and was in Walker Texas Ranger series for years and on many other roles as well. And The daughter Lucybis played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in all the Die Hard movies when Lucyvis involved as this is one of her earliest roles so stayed with the character they all the movies.

"Die Hard": Officer John McClane finds this song on the plane, flying from NYC to California: th-cam.com/video/wYHleFFhlFk/w-d-xo.html Bruce Willis' "John McClane" isn't like other Action movie heroes of the 1980's. He isn't a muscle-bound Rambo clone, he rides in the FRONT seat of Argyle's limousine, he has moments of Fear/Uncertainty/Introspection, takes damage, and is "dead man walking" by the last quarter of the movie. These character traits are admired by men and women. You could say that I liked John McClane from the start. The second movie is another Christmas movie, where besides Bruce Willis also Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald Veljohnson and William Atherton reprise their respective roles. Another superb, clever action romp - first class entertainment.
As for the rest of the series … the following is a divisive opinion, but I don’t care for any of them, including the much admired third movie. At all. Because they don’t feel like ”Die hard” movies, and John McClane doesn’t feel like John McClane, and they’re not smart in the least, but on the contrary just big, loud, stupid and generic. But by all means, watch and form your own opinion. For my money, though, the ”Die hard” series ended after the first two movies, and I can only hope that one day someone will reboot it in a manner that reintroduces the atmosphere and cleverness of those two

The debate is over. Across the board, any respectable movie fan will agree a Christmas movie shouldn’t be confined to only a few genres. If you come across the dwindling naysayers, just say it’s about a husband struggling to get home to his wife and kids on Christmas Eve as he faces adversity. It’s filled with holiday music, decorations, an office party, as character’s reconcile their differences, loved ones are reunited, and new friends are gained. Debate over. Ho Ho Ho.

Christmas is vital to the plot. No other holiday would get all the characters in the building... Would John fly across the country for any other holiday? Attend any other corporate party? Hans picked the holiday because security would be undermanned...

Hello, if you don’t mind, can you do a movie reaction on a movie called, 1492: Conquest of Paradise.
Adventure/Drama (1992). It stars Gérard Depardieu, Siqourney Weaver, Armand Assante. It portrays a version of the travels to the New World by the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and the effect this had on indigenous peoples.
Directed by Ridley Scott. Thank you.

The slow motion close up shot with Alan Rickman falling looked truly authenticly terrified because on set the stunt people said they were going to drop him on a 5 count. They released him on 3 😃

Die Hard remains the absolute best. Die Hard 2 is... passable, but nowhere near as good as Die Hard. Die Hard 3 on the other hand, is the second best in the series, almost as good as Die Hard. The rest are bad.

Riding on the top of the elevator is quite fun, but very dirty. Theyre made with plenty of head room at the top and bottom of the shaft to work on them. Thats just in the movies running out of room.

In my opinion, if the movie is not based around christmas itself, it is not a christmas movie. This movie just happens to be on christmas. Using christmas songs. And little christmas taglines like ho-ho-ho. It has nothing to do with Santa. Jesus. Or anything else imbedded in christmas. Such as jingle all the way. Home alone is even more christmas than die hard. But still bordering on the cusp. Christmas movies should instill a feeling of joy and comfort.
