Some people are critising Trevor for not buying her grandmother a house and new furniture. Just to let you know, if you read Trevor's book Born a Crime, Trevor explains that gogo doesn't want her furniture refurbished and certainly she doesn't want to be moved. And that applies to all our South African gogo's actually, the furniture and the house is part of them, they don't define success by flashy things but are content with life and memories!
At age 91, why would she wish to move away from her community, away from the life she built and held onto despite all the hardships? I’m sure he does other things to make his gogo’s life easier, gifts that do not disrespect her accomplishments. Their affection for each other is very evident!

True to that! :) If anyone would listen to those awesome ppl, they have a lot to teach the world - and especially NOW, since this world seems to be loosing it's mind! That is a quick minded lady. Awesome interview. It would be wonderful to see more of South Africa from Trevor's point of view. There must be an endless amount of stories to tell.
It seems grandmas have a Grandma Worldwide Association where they decided on the type of fridge magnets to use.Everyone seems to recognize those fridge magnets from their grandma's place
food , the idea of a „white genocide“ in South Africa is a frequent talking point among white nationalists worldwide. Fact checkers have widely identified the notion of a „white genocide“ in South Africa as a falsehood or myth. This is one reason why Trevor‘s grandmother shouldn‘t discuss that. Another one is easy: She doesn‘t have anything to do with these scrambled thoughts of yours.
I swear... no matter where you are in the world. All black grandmothers have those same refrigerator magnets. I'm from Louisiana and my grandmother had those exact same ones.
My grandmothers house in Iran is exactly like this! The toilet outside, the fridge magnets, the tree, the broken glass for protection, miss her soo much :')
It's sooo easy for people to criticise Trevor for not upgrading his grandmother's house but as a Kasi Kid from SA🇿🇦... I came to realise that most of our elders want to keep things the same and we must respect that, please.
At 1st I wondered the same; then I figured his grandmother wanted no change, including her teeth... Many elders share that view while many elders would accept change... I have elders (here in USA) who were on both sides of that coin Peace w/ a smile
Grandma was very lucid and specific about the horrors of apartheid. That's why it's so important to talk to your living elders to get the real scoop, not the glamorized version of history. Thank you soo much Trevor for sharing!
That's fucked up it's bad enough that in America with black people don't have no right to begin with but even in the motherland we still ain't got no fucking rights! That is truly fucked-up the white man hate the the black man to begin with but even in our own fucking country of origin we still ain't allowed to have no rights

For all those from the U.S. and developed countries needs to realize around the world family oriented countries, money is not the center of life. Elderly people get so attached to their homes moving her to a fancy house, will be devastating all her memories and experiences in life are where she is, a fancy life will kill her so fast. As long she have medical assistance and all her bills paid is what matters to her, her memories is all what she have
She seems so happy and healthy. The hassle of a move is a lot. She's a 91 year old grandmother enjoying her golden years. Her house is immaculate. As long as she's safe and satisfied.
I feel that if one was forced to sum up Trevor's grandmother in a single moment, that one joke might do it. Pride, sadness, humor, responsibility, terseness, joy, insight -- all there. You can get any type of children from a parent, but I feel we see a lot of grandma in Trevor.
He needs to take that as a sign that he needs to call his Coco every single morning and say"good morning"!!!! Get the clue Trevor!! She doesn't have alot of time left in this world and she wants to know that you can take 5minutes out of your life to appreciate her and what she sacraficed for you to be where you are today!!! Just call her!!!
Y’all do know his gogo is African and she’s not moving EVER right?! He could buy her a 50 room mansion and she would be highly pissed off. She’s set in her ways, he knows that so he just fixes her house when she lets him
That’s literally my grandmother in Somalia(East Africa) she doesn’t want to come to america even though where she lives isn’t safe. She just lets my dad pay for repairs of the house.
@@istarabdullahi7952 My nana came to the States for exactly one month. She was supposed to stay indefinitely but she said our lives are too crazy. When Trevor's Grandmother expressed the anxiety and worry of Trevor being taken by the Flying squad, I lost it. 😭 Beautiful Interview !! I needed to see this.
@All Abored That's different from the reasons in SA. In SA existing families in the 1950's were actively broken up in order to fit the three main categories. Nothing to do with stolen children.
@All Abored You said ".....police would come to see if you stole the child." That's not what was going on here. They were afraid it would be exposed that the so called Immorality Act had been broken.

Now I understand why Trevor is such a good guy. I'm getting tears in my eyes just listening to his grandmother talk about Trevor's upbringing during apartheid. His grandmother and mother really made him who he is.
Watching Trevor Noah with his grandmother filled my heart with pride and admiration for his success and perseverance. South Africa has given the United States a true gift in Trevor. As an African American blessed beyond reason, I am extremely proud Trevor for what he had to overcome and I wish him every success and blessing.

Harry Browneigh Wow - can you actually come back with good insults that don’t rely on the lowest base of body parts and functions? Do your parents know what you’re doing little boy?
Most people would wonder why Trevor still lets his granma stay in a home like this, truth is most of our grandparents have grown to love their neighborhood and would refuse to move to a suburban big house, the only thing they ask for is to be taken care of
So true my grandma lived in the poorest part of El Salvador we would beg her to come move to the states with us she even had a green card. But she refused to she would only come live with us for six months which is the requirement to keep her green card
She looks damn good for 92. Aged so gracefully and still so sharp, wise and witty. I just want to sit down and have a conversation about black history with her. She lived through it. What a treasure she is.
Ikr! Oh the stories she could tell! When I was a teenager instead of hanging out with my friends every weekend, I usually went to spend the weekend with my gramma just so she & I could sit up till the wee hrs. of the night & I could listen to her stories about her life. I loved it!

Even in those brief moments, meant to be light and such, these subtle glimpses of hardness & resilience when Apartheid and was put on the table. These eyes must have seen a lotta atrocities, like many eyes of that generation.
Listen to them, make more films and whatnot, before we nuke ourselves into oblivion!

Hey no offense Trevor, but your grandma is way cooler than you. We should just give Gogo her own show.
gogo means grandmother in the language that they were speaking in, it's not her actual name.
I concur !! :)
Wouldn't complain :D
Shld invite Gogo to TDS, someday.
She's awesome!
I couldn't agree more, but didn't you hear her say how she won't go to where he stays and that flying over the sea isn't for her! Maybe he could do a remote show with her. Someday when Americans can leave America again and are allowed in other countries. Who knows when that shall be at the rate we're going. I have to go cry now
Brought tears to my eyes and also laughters. Rest In Peace Grandma.
Trevor, your grandmother is a treasure. But you already know that.

From a grandmother in Tennessee
With that said ? I respectfully ask you to go in his stead.

The heartwarming way she says “Madiba” shows just how much Mandela meant to his people ❤️

That is a quick minded lady. Awesome interview. It would be wonderful to see more of South Africa from Trevor's point of view. There must be an endless amount of stories to tell.
Read his book. I just finished reading it and it was very well written. He describes his entire childhood beautifully.
I'm so glad he's got his show in US so more people can be more aware of South Africa

It’s true! Fruit magnets and putting sewing thread and needles in old cookie tins 😂

Everyone has seen those fruit magnates at they grandma's house!!!! I know mine still has hers!!

She reminds me of my maternal grandmother, who also gave me and my mom a hard time when she wanted too...
Donna Love She is the same age as mine, but my grandma obviously had different experiences she grew up in the depression in Kansas
food , the idea of a „white genocide“ in South Africa is a frequent talking point among white nationalists worldwide.

It's sooo easy for people to criticise Trevor for not upgrading his grandmother's house but as a Kasi Kid from SA🇿🇦... I came to realise that most of our elders want to keep things the same and we must respect that, please.
They do too.. My grandmother was just the same and we live in America..
At 1st I wondered the same; then I figured his grandmother wanted no change, including her teeth... Many elders share that view while many elders would accept change... I have elders (here in USA) who were on both sides of that coin Peace w/ a smile
