    One of the very best and very informative reviews in TH-cam of this Longines VHP watch. The best part is you have shown quite many alternatives high accuracy watch. Seeing the time setting I can summarise that perhaps the best choice would be the 3 handers only. I think every enthusiasts must own a good quartz pieces besides automatics. And if you ask me honestly I think automatics are just a gimmick having a cost occurring issue like servicing. A good quartz watch should also keep on running for generations unless they are $20 quartz movement.

    A thoroughly professional and excellent review. As the owner of the non GMT version, this is a brilliant watch. WR is fine, swim shower no problem. It's all in the mind. Of course the anti quartz brigade won't like it. And those used to wearing the Antikythera mechanism on wrist to elivate their internal perceived status.

    Shane, this is by far the best watch review I've watched on TH-cam. It was exactly what I needed for this watch as it's a completely new technology from me. It was informational, nuanced, and detailed. You addressed a lot of the points I had in my mind about this watch, which really shows how prepared you were for this. I can definitely make an informed purchase now thanks to you and this video.

    Alright so, to make things clear about the battery situation. The hands will jump when the battery is low, that's true. It will go in hibernation mode, and still keep time for 6 months, that's also true. When it comes to replace the battery, it's not more complicated than any other Quartz watch. It uses a renata 380, when you remove the battery, the watch can be left up to 24 hours without one, after that, it needs to go back to Longines. But let's face it here, you just buy the battery ahead of time and that's it. I've done it on mine, zero problems. I have the 3 hander L288. Don't need to make it sound like it's a complicated or difficult thing, because it's not.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That's good to know. Like I said, I didn't find anything saying you can't. Yet I also found a number of other owners who said they just sent it back to longines for about $70.
      How long did your battery last before you had to replace it?

    • @El1988Che
      @El1988Che 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@RelativeTime I purchased mine when it first came out, back April or May of 2017. It started jumping seconds about a month ago and it took me by surprise because I was expecting 5 years. But well, I never used the "hibernation" mode when I wasn't wearing the watch... And I did play a lot with it when I first got it lol. So I just purchased the Renata 380 and did it myself. I did left the watch without a battery for 6 hours to see what would happen lol. But nothing happened haha. I also messed the the hands with a Quartz tester to see what would happen and the watch did readjust itself. Just one thing to note, you'll need a very fine, watchmaker style, flat head screwdriver because the battery has a little cage that holds it in place. Cheers and good work! I love mine

      @@El1988Che I'm thinking I read something about if the battery runs out, as long as it is replaced within about 6 months, the perpetual date will stay accurate. More than that and it has to go back to Longines. Does that ring a bell to you?

    I've had my VHP / GMT for a few years now. It's not my daily watch but it's close. I would say 2nd next to my Damasco DC58. I picked the Conquest, because it is truly a great travel watch. I travel for business frequently and am always jumping from time zone to time zone. Manual, hour jumps are golden if you don't want to use the app, but most important at, train stations or airports it's accurate. Very accurate. This is why I opted for for the quartz movement. It does hold the worlds most accurate watch title, which it shares with citizen. It's clean easy to read comfortable, very well finished and performance is very hard to beat. Longines is all over the EU and North America. I have yet to change the battery, and if I'm at home have no worry of changing it myself, but if I'm traveling don't worry either since you can find a Longines AD almost anywhere. I've never had any water issues with it but I don't use it as a dive watch. I can recommend it to anyone who travels for business or pleasure. It's a great piece you can completely depend on.

    It’s a great watch, extremely well made and executed. After much deliberation I bought a white dial 43mm version yesterday and am very happy with it.
    With regards the water resistance; I have an automatic Conquest GMT and it also is 5ATM. No screw down crown and a display case back. It’s 42mm and is considerably thicker than the VHP and much heavier also. Just a point I thought I’d mention for balance.
    Oh, and with regards to price, that’s one deciding factor. An authorised dealer selling brand new at 50% off…. £560, I consider it a bargain.

    Longines Switzerland has confirmed in writing that even if you remove the battery for more than 24hrs you will not have any problems resetting the perpatual calendar with the Longines App. Unlike the non-GMT/Flash variant that you will have to send back to Switzerland. I feel this sort of information should have been out there by default by the watch maker and not only when customers make an enquiry.

    I literally just got home from purchasing a preowend non gmt version of the VHP and this review was in my recommend list. Got it on a rubber strap with butterfly clasp which actually has 5 micro adjustments, 3 on one side and 2 on the other. Which works perfectly for my wrist size. On the battery replacement, the salesman said that they would do it without it having to send it to Longines unless I wanted to make sure it retained its 50m water resistance. Which will not be an issue since it won't be getting that wet. Having mostly automatics in my collection I wanted to get a precise quartz added in. Looked at Grand Seiko but I found the Longines much more comfortable on wrist, a little thinner and a third of the price of GS. Like you mention in the review pictures don't do the dial justice. Get it in sunlight and it really comes to life. Very simple dial but done very well!
    Another great review and really enjoyed your take on the gmt version. Thank you!

      I too laugh. I give wrist time to both my Timex watches as well as my Laco and everything in between. Sometimes I even throw on my later dads Seiko Quartz LC Chronograph digital watch which I’ve always kept running since he passed away.
      “Enthusiasts” seem to lack one thing when it comes to enthusiasm for watches. They don’t appreciate all watches for what they are. Maybe not MVMT. 🤣 but even then, agree or not, they have helped bring watches to vogue in a world where smart watches were said to spell the demise of our regular old fashioned mechanical, automatic and quartz watches.

      @Mister_Phafanapolis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@whatsstefon Recently had quite the row with an idiotic _watch idiot savant_ that refused to accept/admit that quartz watches are objectively superior time telling tools than mechanical watches. We all _like_ the sweep of a mechanical watch but quartz are more magnitudes accurate and cheaper to install and cheaper to maintain.

    • @whatsstefon
      @whatsstefon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Mister_Phafanapolis hilarious. I mean, come on. You can enjoy your nice mechanical, but you can also enjoy a quartz watch. Each have their benefits and downfalls. But I guess some folks assume that quartz means inferior or fake.
      No one seems to despise Eco-Drive, Grand Seiko, or some of the higher end brands like Omega and Longines with their quartz GMT VHP models and such. Not to mention the mecaquartz movements that have the sweeping seconds hand along with accuracy.
      Perhaps when they think of quartz, they think of the Casio knockoff they owned as a child that was given to them from out of a bubble gum machine. It can be challenging shaking off that kind of negative association to some.
      Each to their own. I always say wear what brings you the most joy. I bought a G Shock last year to see what all the hype was about. As a man in his 40s, I felt like I needed to get my old GI Joe action figures out and go play outside. Apart from the quartz accuracy, the watch was a poor execution of a timepiece. The blue hands against a black watch was difficult to read. The light was a joke that didn’t even have enough oomph to illuminate anything. The Timezone adjustments were so complicated to get through, not to mention the physical size of the watch essentially being a magnet for bumping into everything.
      I sold it. My ordinary Timex Expedition did what I needed to do. The Casio went to a G Shock fanatic. So the outcome is perfect. They now have another watch they love, I have a watch I love. Everyone’s a winner!
      Just because someone likes the G Shock doesn’t make them ones enemy. Their watch choice isn’t a personal attack. But a lot of folks will fight nail and tooth over telling you you’re wrong instead of appreciating your reasons for a watch, no matter if it came from a bubble gum machine or some artisan from the Swiss alps delivered to you on a herons beak, encased in a Faberge egg.

      My thoughts about the GMT version, the 3-hand Conquest MHP is a bit simpler. Otherwise, a lot of the functions are there to conserve battery life if watch isn't being worn, or to maintain accurate time if it experiences a strong magnetic field or a hard knock. Otherwise, once set you generally don't have to do anything.

On the VHP GMT, when you're setting the local time manually by pulling the crown: 1-does the travel time also change like a mechanical GMT watch would do or can you adjust both independantly from each other? 2-The seconds hand moves to 12, but does the time continue to move so the seconds hand goes back to where it should be when you push the crown back in or is it equivalent to hacking the movement ?

Used both and ended up liking the rubber more: comfortable, versatile, looks both sporty and dressy. Overall I love the watch very much. Since I have about 30 watches from $50 to $20,000, I use this one mostly for traveling. The ideal watch for traveling as it suites any situation. Despite pandemic, managed to visit Croatia, Greece, Morocco, Brazil, Spain, Turkey and Georgia. Brazil was the only country to which I did not dare to take the Longines.

    I have the three hand Conquest VHP and I can confidently confirm it is not accurate to +/- 5 seconds per year. Mine gains about 1 second every two weeks. But, I do not wear very often, and I think it may keep better time if it is worn as the body temperature is relatively consistent.
    I find it a very nicely made, if a little heavy and bulky, watch. Also, the bracelet pins are of the push out type instead of screw in pins.

    With only a 2 position smart crown, you cannot manually set the date. The flash app is hit or miss because it is finicky about lighting. Once set, I love it. But was close to dropping $1000+ under a hammer then the trash. Just changed the battery for the first time. Took an hour to get the flash app to work.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn't think about the date. Maybe it's like a true GMT where you can only advance it by advancing the hour? I'll have to check with mine.
      Coincidentally, I had to recently changed the battery in mine too. Wasn't quite as bad as I thought. Flash app still won't work on my phone, but luckily it still works somewhat reliably on my iPad.
      Like you said, once set and working fine I love it. But I do worry about the future with it. I love that it automatically updates for daylight savings. Yet with talk of ending it here in the US, I wonder if that's going to become a problem where it still thinks it's going on.
      Great concept, I just wish longines would follow through making the app better and keeping it updated.

    I have the non-GMT version of this watch at the top of my wish list, with the blue dial (the red accents really set it off). My biggest concern is the size. I have a wrist on the smaller size. Have an Orient watch at 40.5mm and while a bit large, the size grew on me so the 41mm should be ok. But I'm concerned with what you said about the crown and crown guard taking it up closer to 45mm. I'm definitely looking for a good return policy! Anyway, I love my automatic watches but this Longines has technology and looks that are really calling to me and it is the only one that would make me consider a costlier quartz watch (thought nowhere near say, and Omega or a Grand Seiko quartz, even pre-owned.

    • @balesjo
      @balesjo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I just checked out the Certina Podium Precidrive 40mm (they offer a number of sizes with 40mm the smallest). They do list it as COSC certified with water resistance to 100mm. As of yet, descriptions of the Precidrive sounds like it's not quite as sophisticated technologically as the Longines, but it does have it's benefits in size, water resistance, crown guard curved and crown appears not to project as much as the Conquest MHP. Shopping around, it does appear this watch can be found at lower prices than the Longines. It's reported to be accurate within 10 seconds per year (0.07 seconds per month).

    I considered Grand Seiko HAQ, I considered this, but now I'm after a Citizen Chronomaster. They're also accurate to 5 seconds a day, and have have perpetual calendars, but they're also solar, so no worries about battery changes. And they have near Grand Seiko level fit and finish. No GMT, though. And they're JDM only, so rare as hen's teeth in the US.

      There is also the new Citizen Caliber 100, which I think is accurate to within a second a year. Crazy cool technology, but I think they are going for about $7k right now. How much is the chornomaster.

    • @WeibenWang
      @WeibenWang 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chronomasters run about $2,000-$3,000 or so, depending. Price is a bit hard to say, since you have to buy gray market from Japan. The Caliber 0100 doesn't have a (perpetual) calendar, so the Chronomaster is more fun. And the Chronomaster comes in a number designs, which I think are more attractive.

      @@RelativeTime , I ran into this review again, and see that I commented, so I thought I'd report back that I just got me a Chronomaster. I'm pleased as punch. Beyond what I said before, you can set the perpetual calendar (I didn't have to, it was already set correctly, but I did it anyway), which gives you that extra bit of control. More PC than Mac (though I'm a Mac guy). It's not hard to do, and of course you only have to do it once. A little pricey, but great watch, well made and fairly comfortable. Accuracy is amazingly good. I haven’t set it since the review, but it’s been spot on. I think the last time I checked it was right after daylight savings kicked in, and it was maybe 1/2 off.
      For the right price, I highly recommend it.

    I do have a 41mm Automatic Conquest, which I do like. I’m not sure, but I think the case is the same as the Hydoconquest diver, has the same 300m WR.
    I also did have a Seiko Tuna 300m with the7c46 quartz movement, it has gained less then 2 seconds in almost 3 months. I also really like the design and It’s a full ISO 300m saturation divers rated. The second hand also hits all the markers, which a higher end quartz model should.

    Don't think they make them any more but Bulovas Accutron II range has the VHP 262kHz movement in more palatable shapes & sizes. I have a couple, if you can find one you like the look of I'd go for it, hard to beat that 16bps smooth sweep.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they stopped making them, but I still have a green Accutron II. It gets confusing, but if I remember right the Accutron II line has a different movement. I think it's basically the precisionist movement, but they remove the extra precision bits (thermoregulation) in order to make it more compact. It's still a higher accurate movement, but I'm not sure it's a "High Accuracy" movement.
      Where it gets more confusing, is that Bulova also has their 262khz movements that get put into things like the Lunar Pilot and the Curv. Those should still be more accurate, than regular quartz. Yet I don't think those are thermoregulated either.
      Bulova really should have a chart showing the differences, but I haven't found one yet.

    Very nice review. I really enjoyed the ‘devil’s advocate’ approach. Your real world review for those considering this watch, was very valuable indeed. I also like the high production value, incl the audio. Well done. I’m a creative, so I appreciated your saying how the watch face circles looked better at normal distances than in the extreme close up. I’m sure there were technical , erm, complications, during this shoot. I need to shoot my own watches to appreciate that I think. On another but similar subject, recently, I became quite enamoured by a watch I saw online. When I saw it in real life, I could NOT believe it was the same watch! A lot of watches do, but a lot don’t. I know companies want to show their wares in the ‘best’ light, but I prefer more real world photos of watches (which I appreciate in your reviews). I think some photos have the specular highlights muted under a very softly lit light tent with a polarising filter used. Nice as art, but not really indicative of how the watch looks in real life. I wish there was more truth in some of the photos. Of course, it’s best to see the watch in person and to try it on, but it’s not always possible to find it locally. Luckily, I managed to find one locally of this particular watch. Had I bought it online, I would have been very disappointed. It wasn’t that expensive, (under $1000 aud), but that’s not the point. Anyway, rant over.😅 All the best.
