    I found this out ages ago, Like you, I had to buy a bag of Tej Petta the size of a cushion, from a shop that supplies restaurants. I find them hard to come by in consumer shops as the bags are SOOOO big! They are great with black cumin when cooking plain rice too!

    This is a situation that has really bugged me for some time! When I started referring to tej patta as cinnamon leaves on my videos people started to ask why? Here goes!!! I want the correct names for the correct leaves to become common household knowledge worldwide 🌐 🙏

    Thanks for doing this. As a Bangladeshi living in the US, i've gone through about two South Asian stores myself and had a chat about it with the manager there. This was after i once bought a pack of the bay laurel leaves, like your left one.I knew the difference between bay leaf and cassia/cinnamon leaf but still trusted the South Asian store buyers to know this stuff. Then I went on to make a deshi dish out of that and was caught off guard with that unfamiliar (but not completely inedible) bay laurel flavour.

    A huge bugbear of mine. They're so different. I've tried all good Asian grocers and can't get them the only way I could obtain was via Amazon. Do you know anywhere in the Brum area that sells them, Steven? Great video as ever. The ONLY ingredient I've struggled to find.

      Bangla Station Lozells. If anybody knows where I can get a Tej Patta plant from, I'd really appreciate it.

    I just bought Organic bay leaves on Amazon, the website description said in, parentheses (Tej Patta). They look exactly like your Tej Patta, large leaves and 3 veins running the full length of the leaves. But here's where the hesitation is, when they arrived, I looked on the back if the bag of my bay leaves, and its description referred to them as Laurel bay leaves? So yeah, they look just like your leaves from the cinnamon tree, but the bag they are packed in says Laurel which I thought is completely different plant?

      What you're mentioning is exactly why I made this video. So much confusion over manufacturer's descriptions. Laurel Leaves are Bay Leaves (rare term to refer them as) but the country of origin will give you a clue. It sounds like what you have ordered are tej patta by they way you've described them.
      If in doubt, purchase them from Taste of India, 100% top quality Sri Lankan Cinnamon Leaves. Here's a link;

      @@StevenHeapRecipes Thanks for the prompt reply back. As soon as I saw your video I knew you'd be the person to consult:) I emailed the company yesterday asking them to clarify and they just replied back stating Tej Patte is the name in Hindu, and their current batch of leaves were grown in India. So...idk? All I know is the leaves look right but the package doesn't specifically say Tej Patte? I suppose because the characteristics of the leaves seem right despite what the bag label shows.
      I appreciate the link you sent, I may buy some from them and then I'd have a good point of reference:) Of course I never did make the effort to visit a local ethnic food or Asian market near me to see what they have in stock? I'll definitely check the link you shared:) Thanks again!

      Yes, they are very confusing descriptions. Even in Asian shops you see European bay leaves on the shelf next to South Asian spices. When European bay leaves have not place in Indian food.

    OK... Now I'm confused! Should my indian recipes asking for Bay Leaves actually be saying tej patta? I'll have to find some tej patta & do a taste test for comparison to decide. Grrrrrrrr.. Thanks for the info though. Its a bit like recipes that ask for tablespoons. I've seen many that are 15ml and many at 20ml. Its nice to get things right.

      Yes, this mistranslation has been going on too long.

  • @robertclare77
    @robertclare77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Going to be the devils advocate here Steve. 😬 The large wording saying Bay Leaves is correct as you say but they put the wording tej patta in brackets to avoid confusion. I remember years ago Raja doing a similar thing on their tins (with plastic tops) on their spices, they had the Indian word spelled in English ie Haldi, dhannia etc on the legend too.
    Although clearly different they are a similar product (same, same but different as we say in Thailand 😄) personally I don’t think it was printing to mislead but as an aid.

    • @StevenHeapRecipes
      @StevenHeapRecipes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Robert, the bracketed words are just to capture more sales. Dalchini patta is the correct translation but the trouble is with all these companies is they all copy one another. Wasn't printed to mislead but its the blind following the blind and this inaccuracy is the same for every brand with English writing on. Been going on too long now, even a white guy with very limited Hindi whose only been to India and Sri Lanka less than 10 times knows the mistake.
