We have a flavour rich big cinnamon tree in our backyard. Though yearly the branches get cropped, we never harvested cinnamon out of it! Your video was cool and enlightening to try this trick next time! This educational fun video is nicely made though at times it seemed like you’re taking high risk hazards! Thank you. Loved it.

Dave I looked up how to harvest Cinnamon to show my husband and haven’t laughed this hard in as long as I can remember. You throwing a rock at a wasp nest is exactly what my husband will do. He loves throwing rocks. 🙄 Once he took down a wasp nest from our front tree with his squash racket (instead of a rock).
Then your saw broke which reminded me of a time when my dad took my husband fishing and twice my husband threw his fishing pole into the lake as he “casted” his line.
Thank you for the laughs. You just made of Valentine’s Day. 🤣🤣

You guys are so fortunate to have such abundance on that property and to have this opportunity. I am so genuinely happy for you both. This was a great video, thank you for posting. I got my mom a juvenile cinnamon tree for Christmas a few years back, so I am now equipped with the method to procure cinnamon! It probably won't taste the same as we are here in Tampa, FL and you are much further south but hopefully it will still be tasty.

    Hey man!
I'm a conservation ranger from NZ and use "Silky saws" constantly. Sorry to hear you broke your blade...
I wanted to just jump on here and say it happens ALL the time. I often find I can keep mine longer if I:
    - am mindful of constant downwards pressure into the cut AND
    - if cutting the full length of the blade.. To be not get comfortable the "rhythm" of the cut as it were...
It's super common amongsts novice rangers to have broken saw tips. So, if happens to us all!!

  • @addictedtoelf
    @addictedtoelf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh, I already left a comment on this video but I just thought of a video suggestion. When I vacationed in the Dominican Republic, there was fruit everywhere- like on your property- and chickens! Which was fantastic to see. But, there was also some kind of pumpkin, squash or vining relative that apparently pretty much everyone grew everywhere! I couldn't find a single fruit to help me identify it, but the leaves and blooms were in probably 1/3 of peoples yards and/or businesses. This was in September and since then I have been hoping there will be some exotic squash that will thrive here in Tampa since everything I grow eventually gets powdery mildew. If you guys have noticed something like this around your area, or just have some awesome varieties there that you know most people don't know about here in the states it would be a really cool video! I would take notes of every variety to try lol

I had a similar version marketed by Corona Clipper, also with a super-thin, razor-tooth Japanese blade that cuts on the draw stroke. On mine, the handle broke. Trendy expensive stuff tends to do that, while the ancient American-made tools from Grandpa's shed just keep soldiering along.

Can you imagine if someone thought Dave2000 was back, so they jumped ahead to the 2:30 mark and just saw DTG hurling rocks at the tree and assumed that was part of the harvesting process? Then this mis-knowledge gets passed down from generation to generation - just from an irrational fear of Dave2000...

I think it's acasia cinnamon that contains higher amounts of coumarin a toxin compound as compared to Ceylon cinnamon which considered a true cinnamon. You can actually see the difference between the leaves or on its bark when it is already dried.

So sorry about your sawblade Sir David, thanks to you I now saw a glimpse of the tree, how big it gets and the shape of its leaves. Love your videos and books!(ok, I only read one book so far but going to get the others.) Have you found any use for the berries from the cinnamon?

No, but I haven't done any research. The fresh bark smells amazing and there's lots of it.

@@davidthegood Hi David :) I just found this video and I loved it as usual. Outside of my husband, you are the only man that can keep me laughing my butt off just like he does. You really remind of him when he was younger. I wondered if there was any particular reason that you cut the whole branch off instead of just harvesting some of the bark off of the tree like I've seen other people do it like in Sri Lanka? Also, did you ever go back to get the small thin branches and tips left up there? I've read that some people peel use those as whole cinnamon sticks? Have a blessed day David.

That's cinnamomum cassia if I remember correctly. That is the commercial cinnamon. I have a tree in Mississippi. I keep it in a greenhouse because the winter will kill it. Eventually I'll be able to do this. Ceylon cinnamon is the really good one though.

Very interesting. Could these trees grow in north Florida or are they mountainous? Love the music too. Happy Harvest

With protection, most likely you could grow them. Keep them warm when young. I'm going to post more on cinnamon on my website tomorrow - www.thesurvivalgardener.com.

Isn't there a way to debark the tree without chopping it down?
You know something similar to harvesting cork.

Can’t be harvested without cutting the branches off?
    Something like cork is harvested
