  • Early spring 2024, took a 16 foot Silverbirch Broadland from Paddle and Portage down the Buckland River. Put in at Harris Lane and paddled down to the Ovens River confluence, about 5km. This is in Porepunkah, Australia.
Australian blackwood paddles are still going strong after all these years! The canvas roll top bum bag was a great addition to the kit. It was comfortable on the bike ride and, clipped around the 25L barrel, was easily accessed in the canoe.
The hemp/cotton knit long pants and sleeveless shirt were good in these mild spring conditions. The stretch in the knit is great for all the positions and movement on the drive, bike, canoe and swim. Always keep a spare pair in the barrel, as well as a possum knit sweater and the sheepkin bedroll. I also had the waxed canvas and wool poncho with me, in case of picnic, or if wind and rain came.
It's a lovely little paddle, but the portage around the waterfall right at the beginning was a bit difficult. The rapid where I fell in is also a difficult run with rocks affecting the approach. Not sure what the river level was. The websites said 1.5m but I don't think it was. It seemed low flow to me.
Slowly getting to know the rivers in this region.
