So, the US plan worked: Milosevic won those elections and opposition was broken, oppressed and ignored by the West... they would all sure live longer than 27 if they didn't try to change the world for better or even speak out their mind against "the little men with deep pockets"...everyone is uncoscious here globally, people just see what they show them officially.
I was watching this interview one day in 2014 and thought I recognised the interviewer's voice: he sounded like my university tutor who had mentioned being a rock journalist in the 80s/90s. So I emailed him about it and he was delighted to confirm that it was him! I've been a massive Nirvana fan since I discovered them as a teenager and feel honoured to have been taught by Edgar. I remember he always came to class dressed like The Undertaker, which was a welcome change from the usual cardigans, polo necks, and elbow-patch jackets 😎
This interviewer really did a great job. Completely low-key and knew exactly how to pick his spots and shape his questions without sounding like a dick. I think his success could also be measured by the fact that the band really seemed to like him and felt comfortable talking to him.
With that said. He knew more about music theory than he lead on. Using terms like arpeggios and Dorian mode. He played major and minor chords and power chords. But he also had his unique way of playing them and putting together chords that sounded good to him. He probably thought modes and all that was useless because he didn’t realize how to use them in making a song. What he was doing worked for him so why bother I guess.
Bitteulze that’s what interviews are. a barrage of stupid questions. lol. At least this guy didn’t have an agenda and let them speak and finish their thoughts
Maybe thats why Kurt looks so pained by the end of that interview. He looks like maybe he has to hit the john after waiting way too long! He probably came to loathe the interviews.
Wow this is pretty rare. Not just the interview but Kurt's attitude here. He's actually acting like himself and comfortable. Because he didn't like interviews nearly everyone you see with him seems forced and shows little emotion. This is awesome . Damn I miss him
"What's he like?" -"I don't know, I haven't met him!" If only everyone was like that, rather than making character assessments of people they've never met!
I absolutely love this interview. It truly captures the views of these guys and revealed their awareness of the bull shit in this world. I related to this interview more than Any other. Thank you for uploading.
Thanks for posting this. I've only seen snippets of this interview not the full thing. Really loved Nirvana back in the day. I still think something bad happened to Kurt and he didn't commit suicide. The band kept getting better, and they definitely had a few more albums in them. I've always enjoyed the chemistry between him and Krist.
I love listening to them being so fucking self aware and predicting how stagnant Grunge would become. I also love listening to them joking around about becoming a part of the "mainstream" and "establishment." The best thing about this band, though it is tragic, is that they never had a chance to get "old" and "dinosaur-like." They put out two big albums and boom. Kurt was gone and their legacy was sealed.
They're starting to show their age though. Foo fighters is the legacy regardless of opinions and my elementary school students say that's their dad's music. I played very ape once during hw time and one kid asked what oldies band it was. Happened to Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Richie Valens and now it's their turn to get old :/
They're elementary school students. Who cares about their opinions on music? Most tweens/teenagers I come across can barely name 3 bands they like - let alone have a diverse enough opinion to talk about "old music." Stick with your macaroni drawings.
Marcio Teixeira de Mello Nirvana was an arena band too, because these guys still need to make money, and that's how you do it -- you play shows. But Dave is also attempting to record analog, and keep his music genuine and creatively and musically progressive at the same time. Seems a bit stupid to chastise him for it.
Well, in relation to the rest of time, yeah it's extremely modern; I meant that it seems like a phrase that would be a product of the 2010s not the 90s. :P
If you have Adobe Premiere you can use an audio tool called 'fill left' that creates output from both speakers. You can look up the same effect for any other program. Just google: mono to stereo, and the name of your program. It sounds fine by the way. Watched the whole things more than twice already
lol...stupid enough it's the speaker that doesn't work on this crap pair of earbuds...it works but there's no cushy rubber part to keep it in. Helluva interview.
i think some strange things they say start at 32:57 ... "Assassinate someone who deserves it" Reverse In Utero and you'll find a bunch of "Kurt is dead, stuff" "Kids blowing they're faces off" Overall this interview is fantastic and hearing Kurt's voice and seeing all three of them together again in this video makes me absolutely miss Kurt.
MrJim1972 I've noticed that a lot of the great musicians didn't know anything about music theory. Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, etc. Dave Grohl has also said he doesn't know how to read music.
Victor Jones Yeah, I really am inclined to agree. Kurt used major and minor chords, and its hard to songwrite without those tools Kurt was subject to being human and wanted to feel cooler.
MrJim1972 Also, you have to realize he was being incredibly modest about his talent & knowledge about music. I'm willing to bet he knew the 6 basic guitar chords' names and their minor versions. He just was basically saying that he's no Yngwie Malmsteen type player for instance.
Victor Jones I wouldn't agree that he'd have to know the circle of 5ths to be a songwriter!! 90% of Nirvana songs are simple power chords and single-note riffs... Actually, it's pretty hard to even think of many Nirvana songs that use full Major or Minor chords at all... Pennyroyal tea maybe has an A Minor, About A Girl an E Minor and a G... any others? I don't think Kurt knew much theory at all - maybe a little more than he let on, but not much, judging by his songs. You only have to look at his solos to see he barely knew a pentatonic scale - but it all sounds great for punk/grunge whatever you want to call it!
32:50 to like 33:30 is pretty creepy Krist talking about "Kurt is dead" and then Kurt talking about kids committing suicide and Dave says "they blow their faces off" RIP Kurt man
wataloopus the Kurt is dead - playing In Utero backwards thing was a reference to when there was a conspiracy that one of the Beatles died and was secretly replaced by someone else and people said ‘if you play songs backwards there’s clues’ and crazy conspiracy stuff like that. I presume anyway!
Bryn Zip People still whole heartily believe this to be true. Someone even made a website (I looked at it for fun just to see what it would say) and they had all these pictures of Paul pre 1966 and then post 1966 and talking about if you compare their faces, they’re different people and it had to be a fake Paul. I wrote to the website creator and told them “If that was a fake Paul, then he wrote a lot of great songs. Abbey Road, White Album, the solo album Ram, the band Wings with Band On The Run....” It’s just ridiculous
Yea well pointed out k.o.brien, that interview you're referring to has to be one of bthe most enjoyable n enlightened one to one that Kurt did of all the press stuff he ever did, it definitely told most of us wat Kurt himself was all about I guess.

Glad I watched this. Really starts getting good around 20 min mark when they discuss their future of becoming dinosaur rockers part of the establishment.
kurt cobain was not jealous of guns n roses, he just genuinely hated axl's attitude. people should stop arguing and realize that nirvana and guns n roses are two great bands that created exceptional music and inspired millions.
Escucharlo decir que no tiene idea de como ser músico, no saberse algunos nombres de los acordes, y que todo eso sólo se interpone con la originalidad, lo motiva a uno o a cualquiera a tomar una guitarra y hacer música. Thanks for sharing this!!
If it seems weird that he couldn't read music and stuff just remember that technical knowledge and creativity are two different things. That's why he still wrote some of the best songs ever in my opinion.
The sound of water always calms ppl. Nirvanas done 2 interviews that Ive seen at this location and they are the best and most chill interviews Nirvanas done. Also seems most thoughtful
min 3:48 "not interested in musicianship, no respect for it at all...to learn how to read music, understand arpeggios and Dorian modes, its all a waste of time. Gets in the way of originality" Thanks Kurt, for putting a smile on my face... Oh BTW, justice for Kurt :/
***** For one, he wasn't talking about MUSICIANS, he was talking about his OWN musicianship and how he doesn't have any respect for it or want to learn it. Just because you want to learn all of the technical things and be mister technical musician doesn't mean that he's insulting YOU. It means that he's saying he PERSONALLY didn't want to do that with his own work and craft. Its obvious that Kurt went more by intuition and flying by the seat of his pants then being technical and logical. Which is theory and not hands on enough for him. Thats what he MEANT. Not that he doesn't have respect for OTHER people being that way and wanting to do that.
***** Ok, thats nice. Thats your opinion that he was actually pompous and trying to APPEAR humble. Thats cool, I can respect that. Can't change opinions. Just wanted to clear things up. =)
***** So can a 6 year old? Yeah. I don't think so. All of the critics of Nirvana always talk about EASY is it to play a Nirvana song but how about to WRITE some of those chord progressions? "Milk It" is a beast of a progression.
HappilyWithMonotony THANK YOU! Sigh. Everyone always has to be SO condescending about Nirvana. Now its "cool" to bash on them, be condescending, and call them "overrated". Yeah, you look SO cool. Sigh.
This is Awesome. I know Edgar but I've not seen to him 11 years. I used to work in his wife's old cafe in Manchester. His was a really nice man, he told me when I was 16 years old that he interviewed Metallica and other heavy bands I thought that was really cool. I hope both he and Maria are happy and well. :)

ryan eko It isn't, the whole, "day piplr?????!!!! day don gon sol out!!!!!!! y r day doin wha day luv????? day ha 2 stanat an sty sam!!!!!!!!!!!!" is pure ignorance. We musicians get in the music business (with exceptions like Kurt) to spread our music and make a living doing what we love. Even though the industry isn't what it used to be the dream will never die.
ryan eko You mean the poorly spelt part? That was an example of the stupidity a lot of the fans that are against success show a lot of times. I see worse comments than the, "day piplr?????!!!!" one both online and off everyday.
Wow, thanks a lot for this upload. Really takes you back to the 90's and its issues. Lets you see what these guys were really like. Watched the entire thing and it felt like it was only 15 minutes.
Kurt was a fascinating individual, poetic, sensitive, creative, intelligent but also self destructive and at times contradictory and misinformed. Which I guess what I'm saying is sometimes we look at legendary artists as something more than human and that's just not true, they are purely human and flawed like the rest of us and to me that's part of what makes them legendary. That even with all their flaws like the rest of us have they found a way to tap into something that connects the human experience for people from all walks of life and in doing so they become immortal.

They weren't the biggest rockband on earth back then... Kiss or Iron Maiden were. And tbh, now it all looks cool and shit, but on many occasions they sucked live. Believe me, a lot of my friends saw them (I never did) and one even told me 'they couldn't hold a guitar'. That was before they became big. When they were big the same persons said some concerts were really intense, others really sucked.

Jeeze Dave, let someone else talk.
Lol, I guess not being a founding member he let the others take the lead.
fruefrue13 Yeah that's pretty much the truth. But, it's insane how he was in two successful bands in one lifetime haha. totally un related. But crazy!
Brandon Joshua Actually three (QOTSA). Or even four if you include Them Crooked Vultures (Josh Homme, John Paul Jones). What a career for that dude
Rick Parker he wasn't in qotsa, more like a guest drummer and the other one wasn't isn't successful
mauro ienna he played the entire Songs for the Deaf and that subsuquent world tour. Also drummed on most of Like Clockwork
Kurt, is extremely modest, regarding his gifted talent, as a major musician.
Kurt was so unique it’s unbelievable
What do you mean?
He wasn't unique at all. He was just like every other grunge "musician so quit putting him in a pedestal just because he died young

Ha, great story! 😃👍
Very nice 👍🏻 I think he would be happy if he had read your text
This interviewer really did a great job. Completely low-key and knew exactly how to pick his spots and shape his questions without sounding like a dick. I think his success could also be measured by the fact that the band really seemed to like him and felt comfortable talking to him.
Exactly. Sometimes I forget he’s even there between questions. This guy is really good and this is a fantastic interview.

Kurt's contempt for music theory shows how punk rock he truly was.
Kurt is modest he knew more than he led out to believe
Cobain was a really smart guy. Really smart.
He seems more talkative in this interviews than the others
Many stupid questions... but I still feel privileged for viewing this. Thanks a lot for posting it.
Bitteulze that’s what interviews are. a barrage of stupid questions. lol. At least this guy didn’t have an agenda and let them speak and finish their thoughts

2024 I just finally opened my eyes, Nirvana had them opened long before.
sorry but I have to say Kurt was one of the most photogenic faces ever
Thanks for posting this. I've only seen snippets of this interview not the full thing. Really loved Nirvana back in the day. I still think something bad happened to Kurt and he didn't commit suicide. The band kept getting better, and they definitely had a few more albums in them. I've always enjoyed the chemistry between him and Krist.
I love listening to them being so fucking self aware and predicting how stagnant Grunge would become. I also love listening to them joking around about becoming a part of the "mainstream" and "establishment."
The best thing about this band, though it is tragic, is that they never had a chance to get "old" and "dinosaur-like." They put out two big albums and boom. Kurt was gone and their legacy was sealed.
4 albums
burly dent
"Two big albums."
burly dent 4? I count 3 (Bleach, Nevermind and In Utero). Incenticide wasn't an album, compilation.
Most tweens/teenagers I come across can barely name 3 bands they like - let alone have a diverse enough opinion to talk about "old music." Stick with your macaroni drawings.
and now dave is the lead singer of an arena rock band...
but acts like, c'mon, an onipresent super arena rockstar who writes and records the same song over and over again. or not? haha
you have no importance. its not point even talking shit about dave he's experienced shit we will never experience. don't even bother.
vee Bee hã?
Foo Fighters are genuine rock.
I'd like to go back in time and hug them
I never realised that the term "Feminazi" goes back so far. I've always thought it was a relatively modern mockery.
lol "goes back far"? the 90's aren't that old, it's pretty mondern.
Well, in relation to the rest of time, yeah it's extremely modern; I meant that it seems like a phrase that would be a product of the 2010s not the 90s. :P
Dan Dunning Oh....I'm such a dummy. I'm sorry I'm 17 :P

Rush Limbaugh started using it in the early 90s, I believe.

Wow really interesting to hear Kurt's thoughts on music theory and all that bullshit.
Yeah, I was amazed he didn't even know the difference between a major and minor chord, yet wrote all those amazing songs. That's talent!
Victor Jones
I wouldn't agree that he'd have to know the circle of 5ths to be a songwriter!!
32:50 to like 33:30 is pretty creepy
Krist talking about "Kurt is dead" and then Kurt talking about kids committing suicide and Dave says "they blow their faces off"
RIP Kurt man
wataloopus the Kurt is dead - playing In Utero backwards thing was a reference to when there was a conspiracy that one of the Beatles died and was secretly replaced by someone else and people said ‘if you play songs backwards there’s clues’ and crazy conspiracy stuff like that.

For one, he wasn't talking about MUSICIANS, he was talking about his OWN musicianship and how he doesn't have any respect for it or want to learn it.

This video shows how nirvana was a real band of brothers, it makes me forget all the bullshit that courtney said about dave and krist as the thoughts of kurt about them, great!
