What a great point Dave makes at 8:28. He didn't feel bad about success because the band didn't change to get there. They became successful doing what they did.
What they are all avoiding to say is the term, "selling out". Which is a misguided idea that gaining a larger and wider audience and success is somehow in conflict with being loyal to your art. OBVIOUSLY, there are situations where that can be true. But is that so wrong? Let an artist make their own decisions. And honestly to me, its just a form of a "scarcity mindset" when your a young punk who came from nothing. And you were never the popular kid in school. And you find yourself in a community that you fit into, and it becomes that community against the world. And then you see a band whose music is an ANTHEM to your community and plight, where they become successful and now are the COOL kids, there can be a sense of betrayal.
Well, they actually did change.
They re-recorded most of the entire album, because Butch Vig heard the hits in several of the songs, abs wanted to make them sound better.
Albini is integral, as he was there when they first recorded it all, and for future work, but they did change a bit for the album.
I was a fan of Bleach, off a buddy turning me on to it, so I was stoked listening to Nevermind, but it took months before that video played, and everyone freaked out.
The difference in sound, most likely didn’t matter for success, but Vig made some good choices.
The Clash doing a disco type song comes to mind when discussing the culture of punk rock, i think certain musical journeys would get artists in conflicts with their original fanbase
Yeah he says that but when you listen to Bleach and then Nevermind….the songwriting is much poppier, more accessible. And the production was totally commercialized and targeted to rock radio.
Not knocking it! It’s an amazing record and Butch Vig is probably my favorite producer.
But when Nirvana acts like they weren’t trying to get popular, I don’t think that’s totally honest

I am always super appreciative whenever Krist and Dave get together and talk the old days. I'm happy Kurt's songs persist in being helpful and relevant to new listeners all these decades later. Nirvana were the first concert I ever attended and while I readily acknowledge my biases as a fan, their progressive influence on culture in general has had huge reverberations around the world. I hope it continues for many more decades to come.
While he of course wasn’t there as long as the core three, I add Pat to that list because his perspective as the relative newcomer but how quickly he “fit in” (while adding his own flavor) helps complete the picture of those old days.

The comment/reply from I think it was Albini about anyone who attacked us as fakes and whatnot (my paraphrasing lol) came from a point of pure jealousy on their end as an outsider and not knowing even a sliver of what was going on and how much sweat, pain and effort you put into making your ‘craft’ is true about a lot of bands, artists, celebrities throughout the history of time. Perhaps it was so much harder in the punk scene and I believe it was as even going back to the 1960’s with the British punk scene you had the vitriol and hatred towards those ‘who made it’ but yeah you hear stories like this from almost every artist you can think of that hit stardom or superstardom that these stories are almost like a dime a dozen at this point. It almost always comes from a place of jealousy, shame and lack of self worth from those who are fans or who are other musicians that attack another band for being to as Grohl said just being able to survive basically. Another band that immediately popped into my head, actually another punk band, of having to go through and overcome this adversity of hatred and jealousy was Green Day only a few years later.

The band Jawbreaker, though still around today, were victims of this type of fan behavior. They were a Gilman St band that was supposed to be like Green Day, Rancid, Offspring etc, but we're denounced bc they signed a with a major label before "paying their dues" and was instantly hated by their fans for "selling out."
Silliness.
Having Steve on this podcast was such a huge asset to the entire interview.

Man, what a cool idea for an interview. Conan could be the greatest of our generation of talk show hosts, in that he keeps reinventing himself and always he comes up with better iterations of his media. I mean 30 years on tv and then reinvents himself as a podcaster, and he’s still back on screens, with his assistant and producer as sidekicks. With still great guests. Genius.
He is the best in my book!

When Kurt passed in 1994, and the Unplugged record was delayed, then eventually came out - I never imagined that there would be a time when Krist and Dave would be comfortable enough to talk to anyone about Nirvana ever again.
Took them like 30 years but I figure 30 years is a pretty good length of time to talk about something uncomfortable again
More like 20 years. They've been doing these sit downs since at least 2011.
Nevermind 20th anniversary broke some of that ice, but I feel like the Paul McCarney collaboration and then the HOF induction seemed to finally help them get comfortable discussing the Nirvana experience (and performing these songs live again occasionally).

They're not comfortable. They still miss their best friend like it was yesterday. It just gets easier to talk about with time.
I'm definitely an outlier here but I'm pleasantly stunned to see Steve Albini sitting across from Conan. Two worlds I never thought would cross and for that meeting to be filmed. Incredible.

kinda odd though that Dave became a lot more talkative (he kinda started speaking more around the In Utero period) when he was a virtual mute around the 1991-1992 Nevermind era while Krist became a bit more reserved when he was the most talkative one out of Nirvana in those days.

It's amazing to me how Kris' voice and mood has been the exact same trough the decades. I love that dude so much.
He became a lot quieter and more forlorn seeming after Kurt died. Dave was more of an employee Krist and Kurt were best friends since high school. His death really made him less vibrant and happy go lucky. More reserved and quiet now. I always feel for him.

Nirvana played a little club in Madison which I played all the time. Lived about two blocks away at the time. My roommate then played me what he called "the greatest thing ever." About 5 minutes later they were HUGE. For a band to go from a tiny club to the biggest thing in music in a year must have been disorienting. Smashing pumpkins used to play there too and slept in the garage at the booking agents house. Couple others...Space Hog, Living Color, etc...Space Hog opened for us and I recall their sound check with my jaw on the floor. Nobody showed up and they had a huge hit about a month later. We gave them our door money for gas/food.

Hi Man, the name of the band was ARCANE. We recorded several times but couldn't seem to get things released. Guitar player took off to California with the master tapes and I moved to Austin Texas. Played with about 25 bands. It's easy for a drummer to get gigs in a town full of string twitlers. Phrase is; "Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a guitar player." I've been on the phone with a Texan this week trying to get me to move 2000 miles to play with him again. I don't want to move to the Northeast big city. Nice to talk with him again though. Think he has five albums out now but I'm old and tired. Sorry, got into the cups after work man B-).@@zolfodor4835

Absolutely, utterly delightful. I would have never expected Conan to be so knowledgeable/invested in Nirvana and its history, but then I remember: his Late Night show was the first time Radiohead appeared on late night TV in America...he's had a very long history with alt rock and grudge.
And Conan loves history and music in general.
Conan's show was way ahead of its time in several ways. Even as a host, Conan's aggressive self deprecation and willingness to go into the absurd, whether as a bit or during an interview, are commonplace now.
He's also a huge Beatles nerd and plays guitar.

I can't really picture him listening to Nirvana at the time. He seems just a couple years too old and too interested in appealing to everyone.
This band was everything for me. Not a week goes by I don't hear their music somewhere. I'm so proud of Krist and Dave and hope that Kurt is now at peace. Nirvana will never be forgotten. Thank you so much for this, Conan.

Conan getting that talk show as a complete unknown is a testament to the incredible power of Lorne Michaels...
It was also the late slot. The network has low expectations, so they’re willing to try something out. My guess is Conan did that show for peanuts for the first 3 years before he could negotiate a better contract.

Conan’s job was to find a permanent host. When one “couldn’t be found”, he was given the job, somewhat unexpectedly.
He wasnt A complete unknown at all. You have that very wrong.
The influence that guy's had on pop culture and for how long is a bit of a mind boggle. What a life.

When i was a teenager in the 90s, there were a few artists and entertainers who meant the world to me, who completely resonated with my artistic sensibilities and sense of humor, and helped me get through what was a really difficult time. Conan and Nirvana were at the top of this list, so seeing this interview some 30 years later is really special. Thank you Coco, thank you Krist, thank you Dave. Love you guys
I played in my first band at 21...the thought of reaching Nirvana-level fame at that age seems unimaginable.
Dave was a little bit older. The time period hes talking about he was almost 23. For me the difference between 21 & 24 was dramatic. It was probably my own creation. It was kind of forced upon me. When I was 21 I felt 17. I turned 24 & suddenly I thought I was 40. Made stupid decisions because of that.
Kind of makes one understand why John Frusciante (from RHCP) had to quit in 1992. He joined at 18 to an already established band and at 21 the band had Nirvana opening for them. Kurt, Krist and Dave were all playing from a few years but the amount of exposure that came along with fame and success, must have been very stressful.
I was there with my 14 years when Nevermind came out, I saw a world changing completely. I am so grateful for the existence of Nirvana. It's amazing to hear Dave, Krist and Steve nowadays.

I saw L7 open for Nirvana in 1993. It was Nirvana, L7, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and a brand new band named Hole.

I've loved Conan for many years now, and I know that he can be a great interviewer as well as the best comedian, but I never knew what a superfan of Nirvana he really was! This whole interview is just a major treat as both a fan of Conan and Nirvana.

Some in the punk scene did go after bands who blew up. They were accused of leaving their fans. I saw it in Gilman St with Green Day. Some of it was certainly fans of one band mad at a band they decided was an "enemy" of their band being successful. That's not a scene thing, it's a fanatic thing.
That nonsense pre-dates the punk era. There were people at the Cavern Club who got it in their heads that The Beatles had sold out and were turning their backs on the Liverpool fans when they moved to London and got hit records. John Lennon said that sort of mentality came from a later generation of Cavern regulars who hadn't even been to a Beatles gig there. And of course there are those rock critics who like to create artificial categories and presumptive ideals about what music and musicians should or should be (or think or play, etc.). Bob Dylan going electric is another example, and there are zillions more. It's outsiders living vicariously through certain bands.
@@russallert True. Dylan is a good pull though that was a genre change rather than just being successful. I do think there is a parallel there in that Folk was sort of a niche genre like punk so they are maybe more protective of what is theirs ... it's maybe not so much the artist "leaving" but they are upset at the secret they thought they were "losing".
I don't think it was EVER the other artists who were upset about it.
It happens in all genres when a niche band blows up.
I still think that Metallica, for example, is the best band ever until The Black Album, which made them mainstream and not "thrash" anymore. I was a hardcore thrash metal fan when I was in high school. I *hated* it when pop music fans started liking them. LOL
I accept them for who they are now, but when I listen to Metallica it's always pre-Black Album stuff.

my college had booked Nirvana for our Spring fling weekend. They were not the main act for the weekend and the fee was like $500. But the school also wanted to book Chris Rock who wanted more money than we had so they cancelled Nirvana to get the money to book Chris Rock. Then 'Smells Like Teen Sprit' came out. School tried to rebook Nivana, but their fee went to $25,000.
See? Now that, is an interesting story!

I was 20 years old when Nevermind was released in 1991 & 22 when In Utero was released in 1993. The perfect age to be during this time. I was young, good looking, crazy & stagediving at Nirvana shows.

This 47-yr old appreciates this, so much. Nirvana and Conan's show were everything to me, as a 17yr old. That part of the nineties was truly incredible. This episode was a fantastic conversation. RIP Kurt

If you watch some of the old Nirvana interviews, Krist seemed to really step up and speak for the group when Kurt was faltering, but he seemed to be protective of Kurt. Says a lot about Krist’s character even when he was young. Both Dave and Krist sometimes just had this look in their eyes of “Not sure if what he’s going to say.” Maybe I’m projecting. But those later interviews are quite sad.
True. Although a friend of mine and I were watching some old interview with Kurt approximately a year ago and we realized how far ahead of his time he was, mindset-wise speaking. Would've been interesting to hear his take on things nowadays. BUT - nevertheless - it is so great to have the band on the podcast. Team COCO is really firing off all batteries since quite some time now, it is amazing
I think much of what the band comes for, that is primarily ascribed to Kurt, really comes from Krist. Kurt tended to be more focused on emotion and experience. Kurt was most likely to talk about politics in interviews and was pretty well versed. He was often so funny that you almost missed how insightful he was. The pairing of Krist and Kurt, to me, was the core of why Nirvana was successful. Both in terms of interviews and on stage, those two were the foundation that Dave added to.

If you look at Kurt's old journal entries, he was actually super ambitious and wanted his band to be successful. That's a fallacy that he didn't want to be successful.
Fame is relative. I’m sure he wanted to be known in his circles not the biggest band of his generation lol
'Being successful' does not equal being insanely world famous celebrities, like they became - and still are
I was working in a record store when Nevermind came out. What I remember was the only ones who bought it at first were these 13-16 year old skater kids, and they ALL bought the cassette - not the CD. My friend was a DJ on the local rock station and got me a free CD (this was early on as it lacked the bonus track) and I became hooked on the album one song at a time. I'd play Teen Spirit non-stop for three or four days, then (probably) In Bloom, then Lithium... I'd never gotten into an album like that before or since. I had just turned 21 the month before and for the first time, I felt like I was listening to music of MY generation.
Kurt famously very much wanted Nirvana to be as successful as possible. He actively pursued it.
He wanted to be on MTV; he would watch it avidly and, notoriously, he would call up MTV and complain if he noticed that Soundgarden were getting more plays then them.
Lol soundgarden is my fave, always will be. Bitd when MTV played music videos, we had never seen anything like that. Don kirshner and midnight special was it.
Nirvana owes a lot to MTV and director of teen spirit. That's what really blew them up.
Amy Finnerty was instrumental in getting Nirvana played on MTV.

When i was a kid. My mom gave me a silver 80s boombox with two cassette tapes. Onenbeing Aerosmiths pumped. The other was Nirvanas Nevermind album. Thats kinda been my taste in music since. I hold that album close. It brings back alot of memories.
Pump, not Pumped. I think it was Aerosmith's last decent album, though nothing can top the stuff they did in the 70s, especially Toys in the Attic

Now that I’m a 37 year old social worker and have learned a lot about mental health, I love how Dave and Krist constantly grow and learn from everything they went through. It’s a painful learning experience for all of us that love Nirvana.
I was 17 when kurt died and I remember exactly where I was and how devastated I felt. 30 years later and nirvana is still in the top twenty on my playlist.

It was weird as when I got into Nirvana thanks to MTV Europe showing Headbangers Ball and my best friend who was a metal fanatic who bought albums and let me copy em on tape and at the time they were not exactly huge and then when they became huge after Nevermind all of a sudden girls and boys at my school started dressing like Kurt with a lot of lumberjack shirts, scatty cardigans and unwashed wild hair and instead of being pleased I actually got annoyed.
I was 12 so it's understandable that I got the "you weren't there in the beginning man" attitude but the main thing I hated about it was the overwhelming majority of them didn't know who Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or Mudhoney where they were just blindly following who had a hit song at the time which I always found fickle
It is annoying when unique individual expressions becomes trendy
Because those people were fakes. Always annoying when something unique becomes the institution
In utero sounds like it was recorded at the other end of an empty warehouse. So good.
Now compare this interview to the one Stern did with them where he would ask them a question and then didn't let them finish a single thought, so frustrating as you sat there wanting to know their answers only to get constantly cut off.
Stern is annoying. I don't know why anyone considers him a good interviewer.
I loved Stern in the 80s and 90s, before he sold his soul. He was a great interviewer then. Not afraid to ask, persistently, any questions. That guy is gone. He kisses everybody's asses now

Must have been insane for them. I saw Nirvana at a small club in philly and they were number 1 on the charts a few months later. Can't even imagine.
I saw them at NYC's Marquee Club a month after the Teen Spirit video came out but before Nevermind was released. I thought they were sloppy and not all that, but their songs were so catchy and were stuck in my head for weeks.
Steve Albini is an absolute legend.

I'm kinda surprised that with this line of questions, that the story of Kurt's Lexus didn't come up.
He basically bought a lexus and his friends gave him such a hard time for "selling out" he returned it and kept driving his volvo.
It was Courtney who bought the Lexus and Kurt immediately returned it back. No friends were involved in this.
Just remembered I was there when Violet Grohl sang with Nirvana! It was fun except everyone was too tall so I was jumping around in the back like a cartoon character 😂 💕

Pro: It's great hearing Dave, Krist, and Steve, talking about their thoughts & experiences back then.
Con: Conan embarrasses himself in every clip I've watched. He is so desperate to prove to them that he's cool and knows them, what they went through, what "the scene" was like for them and other bands back then, but he continually demonstrates the opposite. Those guys must like Conan personally, otherwise I don't know how they didn't flip out when he continually told them how they were feeling/thinking only to be told by all three that he was totally wrong. Example:
Conan: Wasn't success hard for you since it went against the punk ethos (as defined by Conan)?
Dave: No, because we were proud of what we did & I was finally financially successful (a nice way of saying no because you have no idea what you're talking about).
You know sometimes i'd like to hear more from Krist.

I think if you saw Krist somewhere, and could point him out to a younger person who knew absolutely nothing about him or Nirvana, and told them "that guy played bass in one of the most important, most cutting edge, hippest and most dangerous rock bands of all time, they'd be like: 'That guy?!!'" For some reason, I find that really, really cool, heh...
He is a giant, Like 6 foot 5 inches or more.
@@jeffdeprey6279 Yeah, I always remember reading some story about a backstage confrontation between Nirvana and G 'N R at a MTV awards show. For some reason, the G 'N R bassist wanted to fight Krist. (Maybe he thought it should be bass player against bass player?) I'm not sure how big the bass player for G 'N R was, but I remember thinking: "I don't think you wanna mess with Krist"...He looked like he had a huge reach, and huge hands...

There are different kinds of guitars. A bass is one of them.
Came here to say this. Krist was the bassist, not the guitarist. Kurt was the lead guitarist with Pat Smear being added in 1993 primarily for touring and as a rhythm guitarist.

Kurt's famous blue Skystang guitar he played on the In Utero tour and the last guitar he ever played live is going to be auctioned Nov 16-18. It'll be interesting to see what it sells for. His Martin D-18e he played on MTV unplugged sold for 6 million. It's funny because on that show he talks about how he tried to get the producer to buy Lead Belly's guitar for him for $50K or $100K or something but he said no. And then the actual guitar he played on the show went on to become the most expensive guitar ever sold in an auction.
I feel like in most interviews with Krist and Dave, Dave never lets Krist talk. Krist was in Nirvana WAY longer than Dave, he co-founded it with Kurt in high school, yet Dave always answers for the group.
I'm glad someone said it. It's really annoying that Dave Grohl always acts the mouthpiece of the band when Krist would have some really interesting insights given that he was there from the beginning.
