I'm a guy and I've always been fascinated with him. I mean. He was full of contradiction. He drove the safest car in the world and under speed limit for fear of a wreck yet regularly he injected himself with heroin. That right there is interesting.

That's because the people who are actually smart inherently have a university within them. They're curious, observant, empathic, analytic, and more -- all on their own.

as someone who also dropped out..school doesn’t teach you social skills or how to be a wise person. that’s something you learn over time of being a human and going through experiences that make you wiser, some people make mistakes and dont learn from them and a some people do. school only teaches you how to be book smart to go along with your “built in” intelligence.

    • @DeepScreenAnalysis

School doesn’t teach you that. Most intellectuals are self educated.

Kurt is a Kennedy Democrat, same as I was.
He’d never agree with Progressives today, it’s not how we were raised.
Him and me are the same age, we both grew up on the streets, we both know right from wrong, and were sympathetic to good people who get picked on for stupid reasons like the gay thing at the time.
The bottom line is politically we support the working class and good people shouldn’t get messed with for dumb reasons, forget party.

School teaches you to be a functioning member of society , or rather an obedient member, doesn't teach you much else, except to pass certain tests and exams

I always loved about kurt that behind the rough rock monster exterior, the guy in his heart was an intellectual who had more of a love for works of the mind , than the superficial tidal wave that fame brought down on him. What a loss.

It's just so flipping sad and the sadness hasn't really change or got any less since the 90s. same as Tupac. 2 huge losses in my life. God bless Kurt. 1994 was a terrible year for me personally... A couple of months after Kurt did what he did supposedly... My 21 year-old brother did the very same thing... The same way. It wasn't a copycat or anyting he had his own issues he didn't leave a note... But it was a devastating year of hell on Earth for me. You never get over it you have to learn to live with it but the thing about Kurt is.. and the same way I feel about my brother is that you have to keep them in your heart... Forever grateful to this woman for giving us this high quality interview. Of all the press he did, I think the way he is here is the most accurate representation of who he actually was. Dry, genuine, funny, witty, smart, kind, relaxed, humble, thoughtful, articulate-the Kurt he was away from the stress brought by his public role as a front man giant rockstar. To see him here is so bittersweet as this was near the very end, like 6ish months before his death.
I'm not one of those who subscribe to the faked suicide/murder belief. But I do believe many of those who were closest to him at that time were, to varying degrees, at least indirectly responsible for his suicide.
Kurt was not in his right mind the day of his suicide, partially due to the Rome overdose he had barely a month before. It was actually quite serious and I think that part of it isn't as readily conveyed since it was so soon after that he passed away. IIRC it's Krist Noveselic who said he believed Kurt to have gotten some degree of brain damage during his coma, essentially mirroring a head injury in some ways, particularly in how it affected his moods. And that he was a lot different during that final month.
Had Kurt not overdosed in March I feel like there's a great chance that he'd still be here now.
It's not known what exactly happened that night in Rome, and why Kurt ended up with such a toxic combination in his stomach; lots of champagne (bizarrely out of place for a heroin addict) and lots of rohypnol-the point being that his overdose did not have its orgin in any sort of accident like is alleged. It was a sincerely made attempt by Kurt to end his life. Or, at the very least, demonstrate to the powers that be that he was unwell and needed room to breathe.
Courtney owed some responsibility for some of the way that night went down. She supposedly flew in to join him in Rome which is what lead to them fighting. Kurt was miserable and tired on tour in Europe promoting In Utero. He didn't want to even do the tour but was forced. And he was so sick and so exhausted on top of it.
In my research of what the music industry was like back then I see so many examples of artists being absolutely dragged through hell by their respective labels. These executives and other suits absolutely did not give a damn about the well-being of their artists, they'd knowingly push their obviously drug addicted artists to keep going, never affording them the time off to heal and sort out their demons...
...that's what Kurt was up against that spring in 1994. He was exhausted. Burned out. Overwhelmed. Falling to pieces.
Who was there to help him? Not Krist and Dave who were angry with him more often than not by then. I can see where they were coming from and can aknowledge drug addiction wasn't understood as well back then, Krist and Dave weren't addicts so it would be nearly impossible for them to get what Kurt was struggling with. They were angry that he didn't want any part in promoting In Utero and didn't have any desire to do more Nirvana projects at that time.
All the money that was being thrown their way just to tour, I'm sure they were bitter that Kurt was seemingly throwing it to the wayside. But he was very much at his limit, probably well beyond it.
Rome happened and Kurt very nearly didn't make it.
Not even a month later and Kurt is swarmed with a sudden, hastily thrown "intervention" attempt while resting at home, seeking to physically/emotionally/mentally/spiritually/medically *recover.*
A room full of lawyers, managers, music industry executives, band members, and a few *supposed* friends all sitting in his living room threatening him, adding still more pressure.
Kurt came very close to completing suicide not even a month before and he's suddenly surrounded by people in suits and they are threatening him. They are threatening to take his baby away from him.
More stress? Threats? Abuse? I don't care how little was understood of drug addiction and mental health issues in 1994 as compared to now-that's no way to treat someone who's very openly sick and struggling _in any decade._ Kurt felt betrayed because he *was* betrayed. Kurt felt judged because he *was* judged. Kurt felt disposable because they made him feel that he was. And they were "successful" enough to overwhelm him into a facility-but just long enough to get him through the front door and smoke a few cigarettes. He jumped the wall and we all know what happened next.
No, I don't believe Courtney arranged for her husband to be shot and killed. But she definitely had a big part, probably one of the biggest, in why he took his life. I hate when the reason for his suicide is given as some variation of "he couldn't handle being a rockstar" because that's diminishing what he was put through. Look at his peers and the lives they lead and how many are still here. The music business back then was legendary in their total lack of concern for the health of their artists, even those who were very sick and addicted to drugs and leading a life that would certainly kill them. It's all about money. That's why Kurt was forced by them to go on that European tour to promote In Utero.
I was watching a documentary about Bradley Nowell of Sublime earlier today that mentioned Bradley being forced by the label to go back on the road only days out of rehab even though they knew how sick he was. His untimely death in particular raised public awareness into the greed obsessed tactics implemented by the recording industry at the expense of the talent.
I don't know how true that is, or how long it took, but it's definitely clearer now at any rate that things did eventually change. Only it was far too late for Kurt.

Great read. You nailed it on what happened. This might be the best explanation on his last days and why he took his life

Wonderful interviewer. You rarely see an interview with such a genuine connection. She was made for that job.
Rest in peace and power, Kurt Cobain. You were a gift to this world.
He had such a gentle and humble demeanor while also holding strong beliefs. It's such a shame. He really did seem happier. Sometimes, happiness can feel like another burden.

It's a good interview. He's obviously comfortable talking with this girl. He's giving her some very frank and honest answers and observations. But he was also obviously hiding some intense pain. Sad. He was a gifted artist because of the exceptional intellect and sensitivity he demonstrates here. He was just 27 when he checked out on the world. Dunno what it is about that specific age but a lot of very special musicians departed at that age including Jimi, Janis and Jim Morrison all of whom died with the space of 1 year.
