If he would have just ran up the stairs he would have had a wall to block bullets. He could use that as a firing position. The thing is, the girlfriend of Keanu Reeves - the actor of John Wick - actually died in the early 2000s in a car accident. Just after she came from a concert/party of Marilyn Manson, the guy singing one of the songs of the soundtrack of John Wick. Her mother actually accused Marilyn Manson to have killed her daughter with drugs that led to that car accident. This has not been proven though. And now i'm sitting here, totally blown away by the choice of music in this movie... I seriously cannot believe this.
I love that final line of the scene. Vigo nods to Marcus' body and says "well played, old friend". The respect shown in the film isn't just towards John, but shown between all of the older and more experienced criminals. Vigo respects that the wounded and beaten Marcus turned the scene from torture to a fight and went out on his own terms, in the process killing some of Vigo's guards and thus making Vigo even more vulnerable to John.
