    It appears that _The Rise of Skywalker_ only reaffirms the notion that Nausicaa was the inspiration for Rey. In particular, there's a scene in the film where Rey & friends fall into quicksand, ending up in some underground tunnel network. Conveniently, they encounter a worm like creature that turns out to be wounded. Rey proceeds to use her one of her Force abilities to heal the worm. That part of the film was executed in such a way it seemed a bit too coincidental to not see it as an homage to Nausicaa.

      The scene on the edge of the acid lake where Nausicaä tries to save the Baby Ohm makes me start bawling every time. Hisaishi wrote some of most effective musical cues ever for the third act of that film. So emotionally evocative.

    The reason why Nausicaa works and Rey doesn't is not because she's better written, but because classic far eastern stories have a different structure than our western monomyth. Nausicaa is about mediating between multiple warring factions to achieve a truce and allow for progress. TFA is a copy of a relatively simple hero's journey where the protagonist is on God mode from the start, thus preventing any investment.

  • @kageyame
    @kageyame 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That's a horrible glossing over the events of Nausicaa.
    There is a distinct difference in narrative that makes both movies completely different:
    In Nausicaa we have a Flat Character Arc, that means that by the time the movie begins, Nausicaa already have her core values defined, what we see is a challenge to those values and see if she can still uphold them through the end, in this context it makes sense for her already having a defined set of skills and abilities, we don't need to see her learning them, because we know she already had them by simple and small snippets right at the start of the movie.
    In Star Wars is different, we were brought under the premise of a positive change Character Arc (or hero arc to make simple), but the chances occur without challenge and without explanation making them feel flat and uncompelling.
    So challenging your affirmation, Rey is Not Nausicaa, not even close.

  • @razorcrest9363
    @razorcrest9363 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great inspiration for a character doesn't make another great character.
    Nausicaa was always trying to bring peace and understanding between the humans and insects, throughout her journey she struggled to
    do this. Nausicaa's struggles being to contain her rage, the death of her father, the occupation of her kingdom/family, surviving the toxic
    jungle, trying but failing to stop the Pejite's plan from starting, and eventually stopping the Ohm charge. And because Nausicaa is the princess of a kingdom in a post apocalyptic setting and showing off her skill in a non combat situation, we even get to see her teacher which gives a basis for her skill.
    Rey may have had common struggles being an orphan and scavenger but she doesn't have many more personal struggles such as the people she cares about being held hostage or the death of a loved one. She isn't trying to bring peace and understanding to the galaxy she's too busy running and fighting Kylo Ren. She doesn't go to fight a seemingly un-winnable battle to save lives. We also don't hear her mention who trained her nonetheless see them in person.
    Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed TFA and I did see the parallels between the two, and Rey is an alright character throughout all three movies. But I put Nausicaa firmly above Rey in terms of character, development, and background.

    You know, I used to think Rey was intended to be a Nausicaa type, a character who is meant to be a paragon in service of the point of the movie. Nausicaa was basically about "Humans vs Nature", and Nausicaa herself was meant to be a messiah who acts as an ideology of how to interact with nature. I thought Rey was intended to be similar, but recent movies haven't seemed to show that, at least not yet.

    so spot on. jj totally did it. not only borrowing from the original star wars (which I'm also okay with) but also from a newer, more recent cult classic than the hidden fortress, one that is more likely to be embedded in the consciousness of the age bracket this movie was aimed at. nice find dude!

    I definitely see the parallels. I’ve always said that Castle in the Sky is basically a Star Wars movie...
    but Nausicaa had friends and family and mentors... Rey’s Mary Sue-ness could’ve been toned down dramatically if she just had a friend on Jakku... just an old lady or man telling to trade a few lines of dialogue with like “looks like a storm’s comin’ Ani,” and give Rey a smile and a shove out the door to start her adventure.

    oh yeah and i forgot to mention, that the props are used very different, the scenes i mention are no where close to being similar, fx when the nausicaa and the boy is falling through the quicksand it creates a big scene under the forest which changes the whole plot. In starwars it not only doesn´t matter that the battleship is sunken into quicksand, since the boy flying it, just pops up later like nothing happened, but it´s also a whole different character than the one you show who assimilates rey and the ghetto boy. it´s a whole other character....so it´s not even close to being the similar other than it looks similar.
    the effects used to show rey on her mission is also very different since nausicaa holds a strong bond to the forest and rey hates it. she literally views it as a job to get money so she can buy bread....however that works, bread doesn´t make you stronger...but whatever. Nausicaa has a deep love for the forest an it´s being, a high respect for it, and she continuesly throughout the film tries to understand the forest and the creatures.
    this is also the main reason we follow nausicaa because she eventually trhough her work ends up taking the role of the chosen one that makes the profecy come true, where Rey is just born as the chosen one and really doesn´t do anything....because she got magical powers...
    so i get that there are similarities but they are very far from being the same, or even resembling eachother, starwars just have a bad plot and some of the scenes look the ones in nausicaa of the valley of the wind...

    I felt it the entire movie! they are so similar but nausicaa is such a good movie its ok. Im just left with wondering how would the force awakens would have been without nausicaa and if the next star wars is goint to be like mononoke.

      Next Star Wars will be like Grave of the Fireflies. Or Kiki's Delivery Service. Maybe like Gau the Cellist? Or Ronia Robbersdaughter?

    please don't say that you prefer the Nausicaä movie rather than the comics, the movie cuts out the main villans and about 3/4 of the whole story

    Actually i first noticed that the silver storm tropper girl was almost identical to the redhead badguy from vally of the wind

    It is not nausicaa, maybe just a reference since this character scales in understanding and empathy towards his rivals and the other only turns on his personal interest.

      In the manga she is just a princess, but in the anime she is “The goddess of light”

    • @UGNAvalon
      @UGNAvalon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liamwilson7549 Never heard any reference to a "goddess of light" in the movie. Besides, isn't she explicitly telepathic in the manga (compared to implicitly empathic in the movie) and gets a pet WMD that calls her mommy? i think that's more "goddess" material than what we see in the movie. :P

      UGNAvalon ah yes I forgot about her telepathy in the manga. Really hope we get to see a movie of her up against that ancient telepathic eyeball cult guy. Doubt it but one can dream 😁
